    The mineral levels are abhorrent. But like you said, nobody's looking at them, so they can get away with it. I wish that AAFCO would put a maximum limit on them forcing these companies to change their formulations.

    Thank you.. You've opened up my eyes to a different perspective which I've never really thought enough about before. You're right, there are a lot of "nutritionists" who don't look at the nutritional content. I do know quite a few that do though and will keep this in mind.

    I used to watch Jess's videos when I was sucked into the belief that big-brand pet food was basically poison and spent a small fortune on the cat food recommended and for my cat, it was a bust. She refused to eat most of it and the ones that she did eat didn't agree with her. I actually went to her website and the courses she took were from holistic institutions which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I would rather take the advice from a certified veterinarian nutritionist. Thanks for another great video!

      Jess only recommends this food as a transition to raw homemade and eventually to whole prey. You say you watched Jess' videos. Did you see the ones that go into great detail about the nutrients and their proper ratios from various types of food, specifically BARF and PMR? She covers everything Glenn does and more. Organic nutrients are processed differently in a cat than the synthetics used in commercial food. Glenn's main focus is dogs. A cat's requirements are much different. Ultimately it is your choice. But Jess has helped many cats, including mine. Happy Caturday.

      I had the same issues with my cats after following Jesscaticles. Since following my vet's advice, my cats are so much healthier. Unfortunately, one of mine died and I do believe it was from following this bad advice plus the bad advice of a "holistic" type veterinarian who clearly knew nothing about how to prevent urinary issues. Never again will I fall for this!!

    Hello,
    May I please ask a question. I am so confused! I am about to lose my mind trying to decide what to feed my senior cats 😢 I have noticed that these new, “more holistic “ food has pieces of bone in it! Is this acceptable? I am not okay with giving my cats bones. I am also concerned about there kidneys. I have been feeding Made by Nacho for about 3 months and Allprovide recommended by Dr Judy. I have fed Purnia Pro Plan Urinary wet food for about 10 years and stopped after all the issues with animals becoming sick. PLEASE! Any advice would be so appreciated

      Ground bone is ok but do not give raw large bones (like larger than wing tips) to cats or weight bearing bones to dogs. I’m a little on edge about any ones but millions have done it over the decades. NEVER feed cat or dog cooked bone as it could splinter!

      @@kimsmitherman6998 I hear you. It’s particularly problematic when you have budget constraints. I ordered Alnutrin vitamin and mineral completer so I can just cook their food with a protein and liver (no bone) and I’ll try to do that a couple meals a week to supplement canned. That way we can take a break from carrageenan and giar gums etc that are in the cheaper foods I can afford. I was looking at Science Diet canned recommended on this channel but OMG! 76¢ an ounce and still has ingredients that shouldn’t be there. I don’t mind chicken or beef by products or even a little carbs but soy and carrageenan (outlawed in Europe for humans). Are your cats kidneys fine? My son’s cat (started as mine when son was 8) is 20. Hes lost a lot of muscle mass. This video has me looking into protein for old cats. Check a FB group called Feline Nutrition Feed Cats like Cats. Really helpful files and very helpful group. Does NOT push raw and helps accommodate all budgets. Don’t visit the Saving Pets one at a Time Group often and when you do put it in perspective as far as % claims vs % fed

      Kim, personally, I would never feed any food Dr Judy recommends. I’ve watched enough of her videos to never trust her lack of knowledge. Next I would Beverly feed anything that says Holistic. It means nothing. Literally and legally! And it will be overpriced. With senior cats, the concern is reducing the risk of age related disease, like kidneys. Hills nutrients do a great job and I was also impressed with Iams and Purina KNE Urinary Care for lower cost foods. Canned is preferred for the added moisture.

    Glen, I went to Viva’s website and the nutritional information is right there listed with each formulation so I couldn’t figure out why you had to email them.
    Also, can you provide me with medical articles stating what the optimum protein requirement is for adult cats? Viva is high than hills canned (which, if you go to their website for the public and look at the description for each variety focuses on INGREDIENTS). Unless I’m misunderstanding you, you’re saying Vivas dry matter protein is too high??? But from what I can find in a basic non scientific Google search, Vivas protein percentage is right around what cats get in a prey model diet….a mouse. The AAFCO standards read “minimum”. Some vet pages I read mention the minimum AAFCO requirement but state that for cats higher than that minimum is better. So a diet around 50-55% protein is fabulous. I just ran a dry matter calculator on the house, brand of the very major pet food retailer that I rotate into my cats food and the protein content is 65% on one form and 56% on another of course these foods contain extremely low amounts of carbs. The first contains negative one percent this product line does contain the AAFCO statement

      The protein range for a young adult cat is 30-45%, fat: 10-30%. SACN book. This is for the nutrients in processed pet food. Organic nutrients, in fresh food, have lower bioavailability in cats, so they will not have the same effect. The NIS did a study on the effect of phosphorus on cats. The study found that the bioavailability of organic phosphorus is so low as to not be an issue. Everyone needs to make their own decision on their pet's diet.

      Wendy, great comment! And I see my good friends have answered you before I could. Small Animal Clinical Nutrition is available on Dr Rea’s channel, @AnimalDocRea in its entirety. As you stated, ASFCO is simply minimums and not much help. The easiest way to consider optimal nutrients is the fact a diet is high enough for growing kittens. It really tells you without looking that the nutrients would be excessive for an adult cat. why increase the risk of disease???? There is no benefit to excess anything in the diet. From fat to protein to phosphorus.

    You don’t get nutrition through processed foods, there’s something called bioavailability , synthetic vitamins don’t get absorbed the same as whole foods, little bit of an agenda with this smooth talker, common sense goes along way people, processed food for your pet every day might not be what the good lord intended

    • @PetFoodPuzzleGuy
      @PetFoodPuzzleGuy  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Michael, you are absolutely on the right track! The bioavailability is different with every ingredient and every process. The point you’re missing is the process is working with all those ingredients to produce a finished product that delivers optimal nutrients. That will include various ingredients because they all act on each other. While a whole ingredient might indeed be more absorbable or digestible, it could adversely affect another ingredient’s digestibility. You are being an Ingredientist, looking only at single ingredients. A nutritionist looks at the accumulation of ingredients and most importantly the nutrient profile. Lol! I’ve never been told I’m a smooth talker! I do agree we should always look for an agenda. Who are the ones on social media selling you something?
