Love The Ted Mulry Gang. Saw Them Perform In 1976 When I Lived In Maryborough Victoria. Then Later On I Saw Them Reform And Play In St Kilda Melbourne With Steve Mulry On Vocals. GG
God i was about 18 years old we went to see them and sky hook in Melbourne local hotel nightclub. They where great days. Fun days as well. Where has the years gone.
Very Quo-like version of this 1917 song. Excellent version! Was watching Countdown & my Great Aunt started singing along to it - I was like WT?! (She liked it too.)
Doing housework the other day, playing some 45s - this came out when I was 13 (Go, Countdown!) and of course, had to play it at top volume, and if anyone builds a time machine let me know, I'm hitching a ride back to 1976!
Mate, I went through the whole 'old music was better' phase myself in my teen years. The truth is, the music you're looking for exists in spades, you just have to get out of your comfort zone to find and enjoy it.
After waking up to this song in my head (after a dream), thought I’d replay it. After audio engineering/mix for 30 years, the ole LCR mix of guitars still sounds great and despite the vocals and bass needing a lot of work...the quality and groove is overriding the sins of the mix. Still great work boys! And no full on crap primal lyrics...
I remember going to a community singing group with my nan in the 80s and they were singing this song. I was amazed a bunch of old ladies in their 70s to 90s were singing this song. It was years later I found out that this was actually a cover of a song from the start of the century lol
Yes, you would have been surprised this song was composed as a jazz standard in 1917 by Shelton Brooks and recorded by the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, Julie London, Bing Crosby, Chick Webb, Fats Waller, Jimmy Dorsey and dozens of others.
I remember when this came out. Mum said 'ohhh I used to sing this when I was your age'!!!! I was 14 at the time🤣 thought I was getting her to listen to some great new song!!😂😂
He did a concert at Kingswood High School (NSW) in 1974-75. Great guy, we spoke behind the stage and he was awesome to talk to. He died way too young. RIP Mate :)
Loved this band. Saw them play at sandown park hotel in Melbourne in early 80's and they rocked hard. Twin guitars, Marshall amps cranked up and Ted on bass and vocals with Herman on drums. Ok so they weren't coming up with bohemian rhapsody (some people make comments saying their songs all sounded the same) but who cares. What they did was damn good honest 12 bar rock and roll. We could do with more of it now days I reckon.
I just discovered this, "Darktown Strutters' Ball" was a popular song by Shelton Brooks, published in 1917 Wow, makes me feel young by comparison, so Ted Mulry Gang is doing a great cover version...
I went to the record breakers concert in Adelaide, TMG played this song as well as dyna and went home and told him about this great new song called the dark town strutters ball, he said it wasn’t new and got out a 78 of the original song. I was devastated lol
I own the pink satin ones that les hall is wearing. I won them in a T.M.G competition back in 1978.i wore them to school dressed as Alice Cooper in 1979 at Armidale High school.Tmg were the first of many bands that I saw over my 61 years.i can still fit into the pants.
Les once gave me a plectrum at an early show they did. But man, to have those shiny, shiny pants.... I might have died. I loved TMG more than Sherbet and I went to every show they did together in Melbourne. Les, I am almost 62, but I would still marry you. I must have practiced writing my married name on my school books a bajillion time. Hit me up, Boo. 💖
I remember seeing TMG playing on the back of a semi trailer at Nobbies Beach in the early 80's for 2NX's summer girl promo. Still have the original copy of Struttin'
Love this song, reminds me of a young lady I once knew Mel sorry your life went so astray I should of stood up to your mum. If only I could go back in time.
Saw them at Bathurst Town Hall 1976 As I remember I received a bashing for dancing with someones girl even though she or I knew anything about the relationship. Still I learnt to play the drums to this very song. Classic
Looking for an Album from Ted Mulry Gang called ''The TMG Album" its got songs on it that I can't seem to find here .....Songs like.... This song takes me back to High School days - the Aussie Rock sound of the 70ies is just sheer musical brilliance.
I hear you, spot on!!!👍
Aussie rock at its best. People tend to overlook TMG as one of the great aussie bands of the 70s
God i was about 18 years old we went to see them and sky hook in Melbourne local hotel nightclub. They where great days. Fun days as well. Where has the years gone.
Great memories from '70's Australia, how I miss that country!

The original Darktown Strutters Ball was written in 1917. Just before the 1920s.
The roaring twenties were much more fun than the 70s lol
I bought this record as an 11 year old in 1976. Loved it. RIP,Ted.

Why can't we still have great sounding Australian rock like this? I'm 22 this group is one of my favorite Aussies rock bands. There music rocks!

I am so thankful that Aussies invented wi-fi, for I can see my favourite groups of my teenage years as I saw them on TH-cam now.
