But in the last 10+ years most of the "music" (with a few exceptions) all sound the same... Especially rap / R & B....basically same music, similar lyrics, no fresh new talent.... If you want to listen to good lyrics try Bob Dylan, Elton John, Billy Joel....and there are plenty of others from the 70s 80s.
The irony is that he was just 24 when he recorded this, and it was his first big hit. Yet... eventually he became the song. Lucky for him, he was born at a date where everyone loves an oldie's hero. This song is still a classic and could have been big in the States with proper marketing.

What a great Hit from the 1970's . 1975 I was 21 years old living in Cremorne Sydney Australia and JPY ( affectionately known as squeak ) played with his band , The All Stars and every Saturday we would be among the many fans at the then Strata Hotel . I had the pleasure of meeting JPY and if you read this John I remember you showing me your car at that time the mighty Corvette Stingray which I later bought 1 . These days I am between Sydney and Bangkok where I run into a mutual friend , Ian Molly Meldrum who visits The Balcony Pub in Silom Soi 4 .
LOL, I never saw Molly in Bangkok because I never go into bars in BKK :) but I lived there past few years. I used to attend the shooting of Countdown at ABC in Sydney every time it was in Sydney, and Bandstand at channel nine too, in the 70s. JPY played at so many concerts I went to in that time. I haven't had a chance to reminisce for years. Can only do it online because I haven't been back to Oz in so long
This was the first single I was allowed to buy with my savings as a five year old. My favourite bit was at 2:42 when JPY did this kinda reverse growl that I thought was the coolest thing I’d ever heard (hey, I was five). I’d lift the stylus forward to that bit over and over, annoying the crap out of my mother. I went on to a happy life as a metal/grunge/punk fan whose favourite singers include Black Francis, James Hetfield, and the greatly missed Kurt Cobain and Chris Cornell. So I think that worked out well.
Our poor parentals as my 30 yr old son would say. I loved JPY and Bay City Rollers. Dad could cope with it. Older brother would put on Slade. Can still hear my Dad, turn that crap down lol My son as a teenager was into Techno. Groan. Turn that crap off. I feel I failed as a parent that he loved that crap lol
And yes they are in the movies which you c and the sad part they etc family never came too get us out and there were heaps of us..we lived scared,battered,bruised, hurt,lost but we are now today's legends...
