I saw the original Styx in concert in New Jersey when I was in high school they were amazing and I think they still are one of my favorite bands to this day
All be damn if I play 200-400 for a seat to see them! I don't pay to see Cover Bands. Especially greedy guitar players, who've been sued violating contracts, because they hijacked the band, and it's founder! And, are living off HIS 7/8 top 10 written hits.
Tommy always looked young for his age so it's logical he would look really good as an older guy. Of course it helps to keep all your hair and stay off hard drugs.
I saw Styx in my HS Gymnasium (Mother Guerin) River Grove, suburb of Chicago in the mid 70s and caught a drumstick John Panozzo threw out to the audience that I treasured for many decades thereafter. ❤❤
Met a guy in the mid '70's who sat in on garage sessions when Tommy and the boys got started. He said he didn't have a clue at that time what he was witnessing.
Lawrence Gowen was probably the best possible replacement for Dennis DeYoung, BUT he can't replace him. NOBODY could sing this song like Dennis live in concert. When he would say "You're Turn" and the crowd would sing "Carry On", such a powerful LIVE moment that would send chills up your spine 😉
@@travischeer2 I changed his name to Lawrence Gowen on my message, DUMMY me. Luckily they had an edit button 🤣 The dude's always been a solid fill in, but he's a far cry from Dennis. I have seen Styx with Lawrence, I don't hate the guy. I have also seen Dennis live doing his own thing. Both shows work, BUT NOTHING like the original, that's for sure.
Thanks so much for posting this. Due to health reasons I am unable to get out to venues like this . The guys look and sound great. Jy is my fave. Love the super close up of Tommy. Thanks again.🎸🎸🎸🥰
He didn't leave. They kicked him out of the band. It's ridiculous that they won't let him come back, not even for one tour. He has stated publicly that he'd like to come back, for at least a final farewell tour.
SAW STYX AT CNE GRAND STAND IN TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA IN 1978 . THEY OPENED UP FOR R.E.O. SPEEDWAGON REO IN 1967 FROM CHAMPAIGN ILLINOIS AND STYX FROM CHICAGO IN 1972. STYX IS NOT THE SAME WITHOUT DENNIS DEYOUNG , JUST LIKE JOURNEY IS NOT THE SAME WITHOUT STEVE PERRY OR CHICAGO WITHOUT PETER CETRA
Yes sir!! A Cover band living off the hard work of Dennis De Young !! And, a Manager by the name of Charlie Brusco, who exploited and kept the band broke up!! To fill his pockets all these years!! Money 💰
This was a great show. I saw them in Laughlin in September also with REO Speedwagon. This set was longer since they were alone (and Chuck was there!). I first saw Styx in the late 70's. We've all gotten a little older, but they still rock it.
I seen them twice once in Johnstown PA and once in Pittsburgh PA. Awesome group always was always will be. This bar far is my favorite song in the whole world. I got hit by one of Tommy's picks at the Johnstown concert. I knew right away what it was I yelled to my daughter quick turn the light on your phone and there it was. I now have it framed Next a set of concert used drumsticks signed by one of the best drummers in the world Todd Sucherman!!!
It's up to them what songs they do. Lawrence Gowan does a great job singing them. It's not like Styx was Dennis' band, it was formed by Chuck and Jon Panazzo. Dennis tried taking over the band. He also didn't want the band to continue without him. We all know how that went.
True, but they hate Dennis so much yet they sing the song he wrote and is their best selling song of all time. Sorry, but this is his song. Can't have it both ways. By the way, I do love the current Styx as well and fan forever.@@charliec5653
If they didn't perform Dennis' songs it would be a very short, boring concert. JY and Tommy are not good people. Current Styx is just a cover band with bad botox
You're right. Not only were they Dennis vocal songs, but Dennis wrote those songs! They only reason they are out there is because they are cashing in on those songs!$
You know what’s funny? They complained on Dennis for doing stage things like this, but “it’s ok when they do it; to their liking.” Me thinks, there’s a double standard going on.
According to the other band members, they agree Dennis was talented in his own right and don't hate him, but they would never work with him again. He was quite the prima donna in his own mind.
@@jlbrpt I don’t think you read a word I wrote up above at all. In addition to what I wrote already above, the guitar players are the definition of prima Donna!! Anyone who has does what they’ve done, goes beyond the term. They highjacked the band, on tour, trashed the man, he was the founder of the band, who hired them! They got sued in court over it. Then, they’re desperation for money (which is what brought Shaw crawling back to the band; after he walked out, because he was broke!!) Then, when Dennis, falls ill, etc Shaw goes running to Charlie Brusco, manager, concocts the story of how Dennis is unmanageable! But, after those conversations Shaw had with Sammy Hagar, and Ted Nugget, the house wrecking was on! Those two are known for breaking things up!! King prima Donnas! But, Shaw got his advice and direction from them. So, Brusco himself even published online that they made the deal, they wanted Dennis out; and steady PROFITS coming in from all those old songs that Dennis made those years Dennis pioneered. The Capitalist music industry with their egos, turn them into greedy carnivores pigs. I wouldn’t pay 10 cents, my gas, time to bother seeing the Cover Band calling itself Styx.
I'm a big Gowan fan (his solo music) but anytime an iconic band (like Styx) gets a replacement singer it just has that cover band feel. Same with Journey and Foreigner. And there's some bands that have that same cover band vibe when other irreplaceable members are gone. Like KISS and The Rolling Stones.
Sorry, it’s cringe IMHO. Don’t these guys ever just retire? Tommy Shaw should be sticking to CYO and the ilk. Purgatory must be playing the same music you became famous for 40 years ago with half the band. Solo acts can usually pull it off.. Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Santana, Elton John. I guess if people are willing to pay they’ll keep going. As far as the feud.. they should’ve given Dennis his rock opera and then go back to playing ballads and anthems as a group or just broke up then. I was just watching a special on the making of “We are the World” and Quincy Jones put up a sign on the entrance to the studio: leave your egos on THIS side of the door. They should all keep that in mind. Sorry: I have to go listen to Lorelei.
It’s never going to be Styx without DDY. All they’re doing is lying, and changing history, to fool people. It’s greed. But, they’re so stupid about it.
