Spot on. I was at a concert by Styx last night and as I looked around I felt the thousands of older persons, like myself at 80, being carried away to their youth.
My older brother passed away recently. We grew up in the '80's, and thought of this song, especially: "I think of childhood friends, and the dreams we had." Miss my bro. who has sailed away. Love, your little brother.
I remember this song from the spring of 1994. My mom was dying of pancreatic cancer. Literally the first line of the song broke me...I was sobbing. And I remember how my girlfriend consoled me, hugging me while I wept. 26 years later this song still makes me weep.

The piano.. Lyrics.. The voice.. The instruments. From a ballad to a rock song. One of the best songs ever. I grew up in the 70s. Come sail away with this masterpiece.
I had this played at my son’s Memorial Feb 3,, 2022. He was only 37 yrs old with two children. He was taken from us and we will fight for him. He could do anything, so smart, loved people and all nature. God has him now and he is I am sure busy with his creator. Matthew we Miss and Love you every moment of our lives. Your family left behind
Racing driver Ken Block passed away today in a snowmobile accident, this song played in the ending of one of his stunt productions... a huge loss in our community... "We'll try best that we can, to carry on!".
Good ole Gymkhana 5 and the feeling throughout many others I really have hoped for the family to find the strength to push along and continue to make dad proud. He will always be at least a stage ahead.
I lost my wife, heard this song and it reminds me when I was singing once this song she was ins bed and she told me ". Doud it's a nice song you are singing, what is the name of the song I replied .. " it's come sail away ." from Styx ..Now she's gone and hope she sailed away to heaven !!
What a great song. Not gonna lie - I was completely taken aback by the heartfelt comments here. To all of you who remember loved ones gone - one day the starship will reunite us with them. Much Love
I hit 60 two months ago. Man, I just couldn't get that around my head. 50 was easy, but 60....how is that even possible? Why, just last week I aced a history test, and I am studying for the S.A.T.s!!?
A song that starts off as a sailing trip and reminiscing about childhood dreams and memories. Then turns into a message from angels. Only to turn out that the angels were space aliens and flying off in a starship. They just don't write songs like this anymore.
There concerts were also a blast. Back in 1977 front row tickets were $18.00 dollars. Gas was under $.85 cents a gallon for premium. Like the song, The Best of Times. Amazing just fast time passes. In the blink of an eye nearly a half century ago. 🤟🏻
My dad passed away to colon cancer last night after a 4 year battle, I played this the day after he was gone I know those angels told him to come sail away with them to peace, love you pops Godspeed ❤️
I;m so sorry, grief is something u can carry all your life when your very close to a person, I lost my sis and she loved this song so much. I just want to cry when I hear it. God Bless
One of my dads first concerts was Styx. He loved this song. I remember riding around in his old white pickup and blasting this song. He passed away a couple days ago and I know he’s out there sailing with my grandma. I’ll keep rockin on down here on earth till we meet again.
Between this, Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Parade, Im beginning to think a slow and emotional first half plus a second half that picks up the energy and goes hard af seems to be a sure fire formula for an iconic rock song.
This, Boh Rap, Freebird,Stairway are not my FAV tunes by their Artists...all have been played nauseously over the years...I’d rather listen to the tunes in their catalogs that never made the radio rotation
i never thought in the early 80s when i listened to this on vinyl that i'd be typing a comment into a damn computer 4 decades on. we were BLESSED to be born when we were. thank you, God!!!!
As I get older, I wish more and more that I was a teen in the late 60s/early 70s instead of now. Music back then was so much better than the shit we have now.
My bus driver in middle school Mr. Leroy used to always play this every morning along with some other classics we’d always be singing along good times.
Wow, when I was in middle school, living on Sanibel Island, school was in Ft. Myers FL, middle school, bus driver played this on his stereo. 1978-1979. Another gem was Ride like the wind!

The Grand Illusion album from where this song comes...is nearly a masterpiece. 8 songs...39 minutes...recorded in Chicago...it was released 7-7-77. Classic Rock critic Malcolm Dome rated the title track as Styx all-time greatest song. He also rated "Come Sail Away" as the band's 7th greatest song.
Forty years ago when this song was popular, I was in the U.S. Navy. About this time, my ship was heading overseas for 9 months and as we moved away from the pier, waving our farewells to wives, girlfriends and friends being left behind, the bridge began to play this song over the 1MC, the public address system. It really fit the moment.
Leaving for the navy In a month, this song brings me comfort. Wish me luck on the open seas, and may god protect and watch over my fiancé while I’m away. Edit: I just graduated boot camp yesterday, now onto A school! Go Navy!
No auto tune, pure voice! I absolutely love this man’s gift! I’m only 34 and I listen to this song all the time. Teaching my 3 year old how real music was made.

This song always brings a tear to my eye. For the longest time, I've asked myself "What song should be played at my funeral?" And being reminded of this song instantly gave me my answer.
This is the song that was playing during the first memory I still have. I was in the car with my mom, only 2-3 years old, on the way home from clothes shopping at Kohls. This was on the radio. This is the first song I ever remember hearing. I haven't listened in years. It's great to have it take me back.
Tough memories but yer lucky to have them. Class of 1981 here also, but our prom theme was the stupid choice of "Dust in the Wind". I heard this song on the school bus every morning at the same time. Will always associate it with finishing my geometry homework on a bouncing school bus.

I just said that to my wife.
You are one of us, love is in our nature. We must love ourselves and not be harsh in judgement just like we wouldn't want to judge our neighbor.

The piano.. Lyrics.. The voice.. The instruments. From a ballad to a rock song. One of the best songs ever. I grew up in the 70s. Come sail away with this masterpiece.
I saw this live when I was in high school. Still have my ticket stubs. Their concerts were so good! Fan for life.

My family lost my brother at age 35. It's something a family never gets over but it does get better. Peace be with you and your family! ❤
RIP Legend of drifting, rally and just being a hero 😥
I will always associate this song with Ken Block. RIP
Was shocked when I saw the news
RIP Ken Block. Sail away legend!
I grew up sailing with my dad, he passed away this May. This song reminds me of him now. Thanks for the amazing childhood dad
My brother passed away May, I know how you feel. Keep living through memories.
My condolences!
My dad passed also great memories 😊🙏great song

Most of the time this song doesn't make me cry, but when it does make me cry, it is A LOT.
My daddy would sing this song when I was growing up. He would even sing it in the truck with no music. My daddy still does after 25 years...

First concert my dad ever took me to when I was 13 years old. Styx, Kansas, and Foreigner. Saw this performed live. Absolutely incredible
Jesus, which one headlined?
I saw them, Kansas then Foreigner and then Styx at Red Rocks, Colorado years ago. What a show! Styx was the headliner.
Styx, Kansas, and Foreigner .. holy shit that must have been beyond awesome !
Those were the best times for music!
What a fucking lineup
I lost my wife, heard this song and it reminds me when I was singing once this song she was ins bed and she told me ". Doud it's a nice song you are singing, what is the name of the song I replied .. " it's come sail away ." from Styx ..Now she's gone and hope she sailed away to heaven !!
So sorry for your loss my friend : (

What a great song. Not gonna lie - I was completely taken aback by the heartfelt comments here. To all of you who remember loved ones gone - one day the starship will reunite us with them. Much Love
There is NO way I am nearing 60....NO...this song really takes me back. Wow! Still awesome! 🙂
You're still beautiful and alive and just a baby in the eyes of your 80 year old self.
I beat you there by a couple of months. This song takes me back to high school for sure.
Three months from the big 6-0 myself. You couldn't capture the angst of that era better. Still rings so true 40 years later. Timeless
I hit 60 two months ago. Man, I just couldn't get that around my head. 50 was easy, but 60....how is that even possible? Why, just last week I aced a history test, and I am studying for the S.A.T.s!!?
62 , just lost my wife of 36 years . Wish I would just quit breathing
A song that starts off as a sailing trip and reminiscing about childhood dreams and memories. Then turns into a message from angels. Only to turn out that the angels were space aliens and flying off in a starship. They just don't write songs like this anymore.
they do not
There concerts were also a blast. Back in 1977 front row tickets were $18.00 dollars. Gas was under $.85 cents a gallon for premium. Like the song, The Best of Times. Amazing just fast time passes. In the blink of an eye nearly a half century ago. 🤟🏻
This song is epic.

Don't forget stairway to heaven
@@bliz974zard Freebird
This, Boh Rap, Freebird,Stairway are not my FAV tunes by their Artists...all have been played nauseously over the years...I’d rather listen to the tunes in their catalogs that never made the radio rotation
One, The Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Fade to Black. Metallica mastered this.
Highway Song as well
i never thought in the early 80s when i listened to this on vinyl that i'd be typing a comment into a damn computer 4 decades on. we were BLESSED to be born when we were. thank you, God!!!!
I know exactly what you mean...lol...loved it then, still know all the words, even though I hadn't heard it in ages!
Honestly good point. Never looked at it that way. *:-)*
Life is truly a blessing.
As I get older, I wish more and more that I was a teen in the late 60s/early 70s instead of now. Music back then was so much better than the shit we have now.
LMAO
This song gives me nostalgia for moments I've never experienced, which goes to show how powerful this song is.
Beautifully expressed! 💖
This song was released decades before I was born, and I STILL feel the impact from it. These songs are absolutely timeless!!
You probably heard this from a movie like Detroit Rock City 1999 when you were younger, or on a car radio
you've got to remember. and have more moments.
The older I get the more appreciation and love that we were truly blessed to be alive in the Era of the 60's, 70's and 80's for music.
I'm sailing away
Set an open course
For the Virgin Sea
'cause I've got to be free
Free to face the life
That's ahead of me
On board I'm The Captain
So...climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
On every shore
And I'll try
Whoa Lord I'll try
To carry on
I look to the sea
Reflections in the waves
Spark my memory
Some happy
Some sad
I think of childhood friends
And the dreams we had
Lived happily forever
So...the story goes
But...somehow we missed out
On the pot of gold
But...we'll try
Best that we can
To carry on
A gathering of angels
Appeared above my head
They sang to me
This song of hope
And this is what they said
They said
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come and sail away with me lad
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come and Sail Away with me
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away with me...ohh
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away
Come Sail Away with me
I thought that they were angels
Much to my surprise
We climbed aboard their starship
We headed for the skies
Come Sail Away
Repeat forever
Of course...it was written by Dennis De Young...which always makes me think of San Francisco...where the De Young Museum is...in fact, I have a friend that works there...Hi Arie.

Talk about poignant!
It doesn't get anymore kool and sad at the same time awesome song either way
I was stationed in Norfolk heading out to the Med and gulf back in 85 and this song was played when we pulled out also.
