My husband and I drove from Texas to Prescott Az, to see them for the first time. Absolutely phenomenal!!! They are superb! They injected life into the audience memebers. To top it off, we stayed at the same Hotel and got a glimpse of Mr. James Young and later Lawrence as well, I did not approach either one. But they seem so humble and wonderful. Love and blessings to all of them❤🎉
I was lucky enough to meet JY after a concert one time. He signed an old Grand Illusion cassette case that I had brought along, just in case. I really wanted to meet Tommy. I've admired his mucisianship since he 18 or 19 when he started with Styxx.
Addressing a Few comments that STYX should just hang it up. They still sound great ( Remember, you're watching this on someone's Phone) I don't think anyone of wouldn't be up there if they were sick of it all. Another point, we have the DVDs of them playing with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and the Band was so energized seeing that the STYX legacy and inspiration was being passed along to a whole new Generation! Well Done Boys! 👍🌲🌲 🎼
I first went to a Styx show in November 1973 in Arkansas. Never would have imagined then that 51 years later they would still be doing this. James Young is the only one on this stage who was on stage then.
@@jpwilson237 Very likely we were at some same shows. I saw them at Barton several times and 2 times in Russellville, and in Conway and Paris. In Paris it was in an old movie theater in old downtown and afterwards we went back stage and talked to them no security back then. That was in summer '74.
I’m 63 and I say I love Styx period. I realize time goes on. I’m witch ya from mid 70s. Bra….We all have to respect the music bra….we have to love that we can see it live. And lastly respect every band members rights. Past and present. Time is upon us gentlemen.
I’m not really sure what’s up with all the negative comments. Here before you is a band that has been doing this nonstop for just about 53 years. Yes the original band was fantastic but some of these band members have now been in the band longer than the members they replaced. Tommy Shaw joined in 1975 and is still just as good today as ever. The drummer Todd Sucherman is only the second drummer to be in the band. He joined in 1995, 30 years ago. Keyboardist, lead singer Lawrence Gowan joined in 1999, again 26 years ago. Original bass player Chuck Panazzo will occasionally join the band on stage. This is now the original. They play probably close to 100 shows a year and never disappoint. Sure they have a new bass player and have added a third guitarist but what band doesn’t go through changes. I’m all for bands hanging it up when they can no longer get it done but that does not apply to this line up. Keep rocking fellas!!
Saw them back in December 1979 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona. Good show, much more energy on stage then, but that is definitely to be expected LOL!
they are still as great as they were when I saw them decades ago. we in the balcony behind the stage and they gave us sooo much attention! "Great Job Girls! Better you than me!" Freddie Mercury ~ channeled 12/06/24 @7:56pm
Seen Styx back in 1999 Washington the gorge at George amphitheater on the Columbia river beautiful setting and not a bad concert, Kansas and Pat benetar
I love the fact that they still have some long hair in the band. It’s just not the same when they cut their hair short just because they’re older Great! band.
They still sound good, however I wonder why they just keep on touring as much as they do. It's not like they need the money. The original members have a net worth of around 20 million. They have been playing this same set now for the past 20 yrs. Most of the songs they have been playing for 45 or 50 yrs. It's got to be brutally boring for them which kind of shows. I'm a musician and I get tired of the same sets after 6 months. Playing this for that long has got to be tough to act like you're having fun because trust me, they're not having fun up there. They are sick and tired of these songs.
Totally guessing here - Styx is more than the guys onstage -it’s a semi-large operation. Lots of people including management, crew and trucking depend on the shows for all or some of their annual money. It’s a not small decision to decide to stop everything…a career and live draw the originals have spent 50 years building. Tommy and JY certainly take the biggest cut and may not need the money but I’m betting everyone else onstage does. Tommy and JY may be playing for their families…kids, grandkids etc. And they probably still enjoy going onstage most nights. Imoho
I've seen Styx...unfortunately only once. And it was the original band. Friggin Awesome!!!! Kansas was the opening band, I was in heaven. Lawrence is good but you just can't replace Dennis.
I've loved these guys since way back in the Lady days. I've seen them many times over the year, and still enjoy them. But they were way better back in the days with DeYoung and the Pannozo boys. Their harmonies were just killer back then. Gowen is good, but he's no DeYoung. I think their current drummer is one of the best out there right now. I've always thought Tommy is way underrated. That guy is a fantastic guitaist, but you never see his name when they rate some of the best guitar players. He's not Eddie, or Hendrix, or Page but I think he deserves more credit than he gets.
I feel so bad for JY..one of my all time favorite guitarists. He used to be the star of the show prancing all over the stage and giving that nasty smile of his to everyone around. I hate seeing him taking a place in the back of the stage. He still has it. He should rightfully take his place front and center as he used to. Love that guy and his style so much. Never leave us JY
@@andyharman3022 That's Will Evankovich. He's been producing Styx tracks for years and played with Tommy when he soloed the second time around. He's there to fortify the sound not replace JY.
Great show, this i one of the best live bands on the planet , but with that being said ,the absent of amps on stage does affect the live experiece and im sure that the band is experiencing the same it just seems that something is missing , i dont know if im right , but sure feels that way
I used to live in Peoria IL and saw the original lineup pre Tommy Shaw a few times some of the best rock concerts i ever saw back in the 70s....this is ok but......
I bought tickets to take my granddaughter to see this amazing band. I was extremely disappointed I am partially deaf and 4 songs in we had to leave, it was so loud I thought my ears were going to bleed. This arena is about 10x smaller then the great western forum where I saw them the first time and this was probably to loud for that place. I spoke to friends that also went and they have said the same thing
You should have saw these guys in the early eighties when they were at their Peak they were awesome. Not that they're not good now but when you've been singing and playing for years and years you lose a little bit of something everybody does with their jobs but they still are awesome
I agree Dana as I saw the Grand Illusion, Cornerstone and Paradise Theater tours and they were all amazing shows with Dennis and they they still sound great today with Tommy leading the way!
Tommy was in great form, JY looks like hes about ready to retire. Good job with the Dennis parts but still wish Dennis D was there. Its really a scumbag move what they did to him. I mean they all HATED Kilroy was here CD / TOUR and it was there biggest hit. They didint want to do a concept album and then never made anything better. Sure "Show me the way" was a hit ballad but was really more of the right time right place moment with war in the gulf. K-
Surprisingly great show. No auto-tune or pre-recorded tape shit here. Love their raw sound and imperfect voices. Instrument work perfect. Unlike Henley and Swift with their taped voice crap.
it is very strange that the band does play all of Dennis songs that he wrote and sang on so many songs, and that made the band popular back in the day, but does not play in anymore? Is there really a band without Dennis or is it just a (illusion) of a band that once was, or we just (fooling ourselves) of today's band of Styx??js
How so? The songs are the same songs. The band is as good as it’s ever been; probably better. They have the best rock drummer in the business. And you came here to watch the video.
I was there at the concert his vocals were much louder. Sounded a lot better. Maybe it’s the TH-cam recording of it that makes it sound different. Still cool to see it posted here.
They don’t sound bad at All years have taking the tolls remember seeing a lot of older bands in the 70s that were around Styx was never a concert band there studio albums sold records. They failed in Kansas City with a live album and broke up later . And lawsuits destroyed them . Grand illusion was a masterpiece.
I don’t think it’s a good lineup, they do their best for sure but it really does lack energy and enthusiasm. Styx is an awesome band, their songwriting it’s just through the roof ..though.. some bands age more gracefully than others. No matter what, I love Styx, pretty much all of it.👍
A band I grew up with, too bad they pulled a coup on Dennis years ago, saying he was too much of a wus, this singer much more masculine, ha ha…just tell the truth JY and Tommy, you hated sharing the coin.
Their manager Charlie Bruscoe is a weasel. Artimus Pyle knew he was a con man and Brusco wanted more tour revenue and is a greedy hungry money man. Even Mark Fenwick doesn't push Roger Waters to tour ad nauseam (Roger does use pre-recorded vocals).
band seems to be getting tired of touring!!no energy anymore and just going through emotions!!nobody's happy and having a good time in the band it seems!!!but a job is a job and there getting paid!!just like i do every day when i go to work!!!
