The joy on the kids faces and Tommy to me is what music is all about! Bravo kids and Tommy! I have a new favorite version of a song I already love ROVK ON,🤘🤘🤘❤🎻🎸🎹🎤
I have played flute since 5 th grade, this is great for these kids! I am 60 now n I still love Styx and Tommy Shaw! Shows are great! Even in 1978 they were my favorite !
His backstory would be interesting after that amazing performance. It was a soulful performance. I am sure Tommy took notice. Guessing he has made a few introductions in the industry. Bravo.
You're not kidding, his playing is excellent. Violin is not my instrument, but I can tell you that in order to play as well as he does, that young man has put in well over a thousand hours of study and practice to reach that point. He has definitely been given some serious private tutelage by someone who really knows their profession.

Not gonna lie, that part got me a little emotional. Not sure why.... because I felt happy for him?.....just thought it sounded beautiful?.... Not really sure why but it made my eyes sweat a little.
You know I always liked this song when it was a hit back in the seventies.. I didn't quite considerate to be quite as beautiful as it is...until now, being played this way with the orchestra ...it's a really gorgeous piece of work!! way to go Tommy Shaw ... freaking Masterpiece just really really something !! and as another musician one to another, if this doesn't bring a tear to your eye.....
Goes without saying that Tommy is great but who else thinks the kid soloing on the violin is awesome too!? Of course, they’re all great! Well done, kids! 🎻 🎶 👏
So true. Very proud of people like these. The young adults who are obviously some of the best get to collaborate with one of the best rockers of all time Tommy Shaw. I keep watching this from time to time. It never gets old seeing an old scholar sharing his passion with younger people who share that same passion. This is absolutely beautiful!!!
DON'T call TOMMY the OLD MAN!! A selfless MAN letting all those youngsters GET THE experience of a real audience an love an Appreciation of rock an roll
This is why the arts should NEVER be dropped at our schools. True freedom lies in self-expression... and allows our children to soar ever higher, more so than any other curriculum or school-funded activity can. 👍
Agreed.....More schools need to show this kind of video to the students. Taking an interest in playing the cello...violin....clarinet or flute.....or any instrument for that matter.... does not pigeon-hole you into only classical music ! Music IS the universal language and even if they all spoke different languages and could not talk to each other.....they can still read the sheet music and play together and enjoy the thrill of being in a musical environment together. This is fantastic.....gives us hope of a better day......hope there is more of this in the future.
I'm 77 and let me say that watching these young faces in the orchestra playing uplifting music of their generation reminds me that life goes on through our kids. The joy I see in these talented young people and their spirited music revitalizes my creaky joints and old bones. Thanks ever so much for sharing this with me! I loved every minute of their performance!
I'm 50 and I agree. You know that these kids' parents were their age when Tommy wrote that song and first performed it with Styx. It just proves that awesome music is eternal and shitty music is auto-tuned.
Ditto. 60 in December. My first concert I went to was Styx. I think Triumph opened for them. I loved both bands. Haven't been to many concerts. Wish I would have seen Kansas but never did.
Same. This music represents my youth & high school for me. I was 14 in 1977 when it was released. I can't listen to this enough & I'm smiling all the while. ❤
Chills AND crying!!! Seriously one of the most profound and magical performances of a rock/orchestral duet I've heard in my life. Every single person on that stage NAILED IT. And yes, Tommy still has a fantastic voice.
This got me emotionally. Really brought tears to my eyes. 65 year old Vietnam era Navy vet who first listened to this when I was deployed on the USS Nimitz in 1977. Its taking me an hour to recover from the joy of these talented musicians and vocalists.
NK Bobcat. I hope all is well with you. I just want to thank you for your service. I cannot imagine the horrors of warfare. I was blessed to have not had my number called to serve during the draft. However I am grateful to all that served , again thank you sir.
Hey, ya Squid! I was a Jarhead at the same time. Camp Pendleton. I remember this song so well blasting on the radio. It still stands up, and still makes me wanna dance. Although we both probably look kinda un-cool dancing these days... 🧑🦽😁
What a Brilliant bunch of kids and absolutely wonderful of Tommy Shaw and his partner in Styx to do this, along with Roger Hodgson of Supertramp who does the same thing with kids.....nice too see, they have not forgotten where they started, no wonder Styx and Supertramp are two of the best groups
@@Oh_I_Will One take. The musicians learn their individual parts on their own. Then the orchestra rehearses without Tommy. A few hours of rehearsal with Tommy and a performance.
Those kids will remember this forever. I love that Tommy gave those kids a chance and they shined like a supernova. Love seeing kids into music and not craziness in the world.
Amazing inspirational takes me back to high school we had amazing band stage band toured europe went to Styx concert with my college debate team san antonio i was alive more than ever great memories Texas A&I 1979
OMG, I was 18 years old when this came out. I am simply blown away and in tears from hearing this redition of a classic Styx song. Thank you Tommy Shaw and all who participated in this concert. Awesome! (and you have to credit Dennis DeYoung for the original arrangment too, he was absolutely the heart of Styx)
Well, considering he was a 'fetus' when he joined the band (Dennis' term, not mine) he's still just a baby! Seriously, though, he's always looked young.
@@davidisenberg9441 Have you listened to the entire Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums? If not I highly recommend them. Some great stuff there. Lots of great stuff in the pre-Shaw era as well. A truly great band.
My wife and I have seen Styx live dozens of times over the years and absolutely love their music. Tommy Shaw has one of the iconic rock voices of all time. First class move to include all these kids in a never-to- be forgotten performance. Just beautiful!
Totally love STYX as well, when our ship was deployed many of us blasted the Grand Illusion album in our berthing compartment... On 8track!! Then we graduated to cassettes. Their range was awesome, from "Babe" to "Suite Madam Blue" that rocked as hard as anyone else.
5 years later and this performance moves me again on so many levels. The gift that keeps on giving to us all. The fun that everyone is having including Tommy. Not to mention the excellent performances by the orchestra. Bravo, and thank you all! I hope folks still visit these comments to know how much joy this performance keeps on delivering. 💖💓💞
The little girl with short blond hair in the front of the choir sings with such unbridled joy, it's great to see! I love watching young people who perform music with passion. we need more of this.
Leslie here.. I think it’s absolutely amazing that Tommy Shaw, not only play’s..sings and seems to enjoy the performance as anyone else!! Rock on 🤘🏼 and Peace ✌🏼 🎶😎😁💜💚💛🔥☺️💋
By far one of the greatest presentations of American music by one of our most underrated talented American music prodigy and showman......the GREAT Tommy Shaw! Tommy could be a headliner by himself, but he is a team player and shares his magic with other fine musicians including this talented young orchestra. Thanks for this Tommy! God Bless!
Feldspar just go away you angry stupid man(?) or whatever you are. Find something useful to do with yourself that doesn’t include being a total douchebag. Maybe you’d be less miserable & others might be less miserable around you.
I just saw Styx at the Fox in Atlanta this past Friday for the first time. They were incredible. Tommy was incredible... and at 69 he still dances around the stage. I'm 66 years old myself, and this song came out when I was in college. But this rendition is the best I've ever seen and one of the most uplifting performances of any song I've ever seen. Bravo Tommy Shaw and the Cleveland CYO!!! JUST BRAVO!!!
I was about 13 or 14 years old and my grandfather was administrator of Parks and recreation in a little town called Hammond Indiana. And every year styxs has would rent out the Civic center for one week to practice. I was the only person allowed to go in there and watch while my grandfather was working and I was waiting for my ride home. I would practice basketball shots alone and one day, Tommy let me play his guitar and sing one of my favorite songs known as renegade. What an honor that was. And I sucked. But the entire band Dennis Tommy and James had me believing that I potential and did an outstanding job. When my grandfather got his heart attack they were in Hawaii and sent him a palm tree as a good well soon gift. Styxs will always have a place in my heart.
Thank you Styx's , Tommy Shaw and my friend Lisa who went with me to the REO Speedwagon and Styx's concert. This song led my way to sobriety and kept me from slowly killing myself from drugs and alcohol 2017 became my road to sobriety because of this song God Bless.
One of the best things Tommy can do at this stage of the game is showcasing his songs alongside these cool young musicians. And interesting to see how a rock song translates into magnificent music when the big orchestra is added to it. Their songs always were complex works of art for the rock scene, which made them all so good.
The amazing Tommy Shaw. In 1993, Tommy sang 4 songs with our little garage band at a bar called Cha Cha Coconuts in Sarasota, Florida. He only had an acoustic guitar and no mic. It was the most incredible thing I've ever seen. He voice literally drew people in from St. Armands circle. He was extremely generous with us and I'll never forget it. In the off chance that he reads this, thank you, Tommy, for a memory we'll never forget.
Great story. I first met Tommy in the mid-80's. He was nice then , and he's still nice. Success never spoiled him. That's why Dick Clark helped Tommy , when Tommy went solo. The way you treat people *matters*. Glad you have a great memory to treasure. 🌲
This makes me miss performing in school so much. I played the trombone for 8 years, but after picking up the drums and bass it fell by the wayside the last 15 years or so. It's time to get back into it. Thanks for the inspiration!
Ya, considering their Parents probably were Styx Fans growing up. I would be elated if that were one of my kids.👏👏💗💓. an honor of a lifetime they will NEVER forget. Bravo, 😚😚😚🌷⚘🌷⚘🌷⚘🥀⚘🥀⚘🌷
Greetings from Torrance, Ca! Absolutely blown away by this performance! I am 55 years old and I was probably the same age or a little older as these kids when I first heard this song. To see this generation play this music gives me hope. They don't know what they have missed out on, but hopefully will appreciate again one day. Just incredible!
"Fooling Yourself" is is an old song now, but it is poignantly relevant today, in a time which sadly has a literal epidemic of stressed out and anxious young people. The message of this song is timeless and valuable across the decades. . What a joy to see these amazing and beautiful young musicians and singers perform this song. Well done Tommy Shaw! What a musical treasure and a fabulous human being.
MANY OF US today wished the kids today could learn and enjoy music we grew up with ..countless bands making their own way music today even country have all gone mostly rap style more word singing than voice singing less music and back up singers .. just does not have the feel to it .i cant even listen to country anymore or rap at all .. thanks to styx and many other groups with timeless hits i can go back to the 50s when i was born and listen to any song i want .styx will always be timeless .i met tommy shaw a few years ago and felt like a kid at a carnival .i am older than tommy but was excited to meet him .and i have met many many stars of music back then sat on stage with many after the shows .lorreta lynn three hour visit mel tillis tanya tucker and many more i have met .but none ever made me feel like tommy did .. .. i never get tired of styx ..
I found myself standing in front of my computer and cheering. My heart was racing and a single tear ran down my cheek as the thrill of this undeniably Styx moment sank in. Tommy Shaw is a legend and partnering with this group of talented musicians was genius in the first degree. I don't know how to explain it other than to say it brought me back to the 70s when I was also standing on my feet and cheering for a brand new band that spoke to me this way. This performance was a tremedous gift for this aging rocker. Thank you!
This is what I needed today. The world is a dark ugly place right now, but Tommy and these young musicians put a huge smile on my face. May they all have beautiful, long lives. Tommy is a rock legend.
Holy shit, that has to be one of the best live performances I've ever seen!!!! The strings, acoustics and small crown concert hall walls mixed with Tommy Shaw's expertise talent did it absolute justice! Absolutely incredible!!!!!!!! And to hear the crowd cheer and watch the kids smile for their efforts is so emotional. If this doesn't bring a happy tear to your eye, nothing will.
I read the comments an love the fact that this performance was emotional for so many, I was sitting here, tears close to my eyes and was surprised by my reaction to this video, apparently I’m not alone! Take care of each other, my best to all who are moved by this!
I think I’ve watched it at least 12 times and I still have to hear it again and again it is so talented of everybody and I’ve been listening to Styx since the early 70s I think and now everyone else that gets to sing with Tommy
I found out that they played at my grade school many, many years ago, before I went there. Queen of Apostles church in Riverdale, IL, where I grew up!!
So nice to see these musicians include youngsters in there show,as does Roger Hodgson there our future and brings a ton of confidence to them all......Thank You Tommy and group
"Effin' aye, Cotton!" That was, without a doubt, the most impressive rendition of that song, my seventy year old ears have ever heard! Bravo to the Contemporary Youth Orchestra! Nice job Tommy!
As others have already said, THIS is why we need to promote the arts (including music!) in our schools!!!
Indeed sir!
Isn't that what State lotteries are all about?
I hope more people hear this and see the energy in.the kids eyes. There is hope for our world after all.
The world would be so much better if we offered music to every kid throughout their educational journey.
Without question.
But not without funding. Especially Chicago. Kids have no interest, schools have no budget for brass instruments.

Who else? How 'bout everybody.
Yes...and so not their music genre. Most excellent. They all have it DOWN PAT!!
I hope that kid has become a star!
Like a boss 😎
I LOVE the little Asian guy! I predict he will go far in life!
Unsung hero: whoever transcribed those solos for the violinist and cellist. Much respect.
I'm pretty sure that the woman conducint did the transcriptions and arrangements.
That was my "wow" moment.
@@rickhicks302 Yup.. Violinist nailed it and everyone knew it. Excellent transcription
Its cool how in the actual synth solo the note range is greater than the violin and it moves to the cello.
leor amikam It reminds me of the solo trade offs that Dave Matthews Band does. I’m thinking of Eat Too Much in particular. Guitar, sax, violin
Every person that contributed to this rendition is fantastic. From the arranger to the performers. The world could use more of this.
Well said Smilin
You're so right. Oh my goodness!
💜💜💜💜💜
Bless up 🙏
I lost track of how many times I've watched this, and it gives me goosebumps every time. These kids sound off-the-charts professional!
I did too.😀
Me too ! Love it !!! ♥️
Yes goosebumps 🤗🥰👍
Right there with you
Truly Anazing! I have watched repeatedly as well
Shout out to conductor Liza Grossman for her work on this. It takes a dedicated leader to pull something like this off. Congratulations, Liza!
This version of the song is amazing, but the smile on these kids faces says it all. The happiness comes through the video. Well done Tommy Shaw!!!
When talent and brilliance collide....the old man giving the kids a ride they’ll remember the rest of their lives!!
Look at the young blonde girl rocking out during the violin solos

@Jessica Gigliotti Any relative of Anthony Gigliotti the famed principal clarinetist of the Philadelphia Orchestra back in the day?
I'm a 55 year old man who is wiping tears from my face right now
As is this 67 yr. old
I'm 58 and crying right with you!
51, and , yes, me too :..)
I'm 55 and doing the same. Takes me back 40 years. Just beautiful.
A THIRD crybaby! For Stynx??!?
These kids did a great job. If they could only appreciate what an icon Tommy was to our generation.
F ing perfect. That's my generation guys when Rock actually meant something
Yeah bro!
Your comment is “F ing “! Nice profanity
👍
Such a great band and of course they are another band ignored by the Rock and roll Hall of Fame.
Robert Jones Yes had real meaning and made you reflect and give you inspiration!
This is why the arts should NEVER be dropped at our schools. True freedom lies in self-expression... and allows our children to soar ever higher, more so than any other curriculum or school-funded activity can. 👍
And you've said why that many want it out of schools.
Tommy’s voice has never better and these kids - WOW!
@@tommyshaw4050 You're not Tommy Shaw.....go away.
@@markl2322 did you take your meds?
I'm 77 and let me say that watching these young faces in the orchestra playing uplifting music of their generation reminds me that life goes on through our kids. The joy I see in these talented young people and their spirited music revitalizes my creaky joints and old bones. Thanks ever so much for sharing this with me! I loved every minute of their performance!
I was the same age as these kids when I first heard this song. Released in 1977. I'm 60 yrs now. . . . 😳
I'm 58. I second that sentiment...😳
I'm 50 and I agree. You know that these kids' parents were their age when Tommy wrote that song and first performed it with Styx. It just proves that awesome music is eternal and shitty music is auto-tuned.
I am 59 years old and love this song
I just saw this for the first time the moment I sent you this reply! & if you grew up back then you realize how great this really is! HBT!!!
Crying lol...Sure.
Andrea Miklasz couldn't agree more !!!!
Wow couldn't they achieve a better Conductor.
Couldn't have said it any better!!!!!!
This got me emotionally. Really brought tears to my eyes. 65 year old Vietnam era Navy vet who first listened to this when I was deployed on the USS Nimitz in 1977. Its taking me an hour to recover from the joy of these talented musicians and vocalists.
Thank you so very much for your service to us in the U.S.Wow USS NIMITZ

I love the little wry smile on the soloists face after he crushes it on his violin solo and the crowd cheers!
He nailed it. Twice.
How Proud his parents must Be.
How many Takes do you suppose they had to do, to get this right?
@@Oh_I_Will
One take. The musicians learn their individual parts on their own. Then the orchestra rehearses without Tommy. A few hours of rehearsal with Tommy and a performance.
Next Lead for the Tran Siberian Orchestra!
Wow. Just, wow. Moved to tears! Styx was such a part of my life when I was about those kids age. Still is, I realize. I love art.
See Ken & Cheryl above.....
Same here.

kids did SPECTACULAR.
Epic song of my youth. Listened to this song after losing my girlfriend to another guy.
Those kids will remember this forever. I love that Tommy gave those kids a chance and they shined like a supernova. Love seeing kids into music and not craziness in the world.
Amazing inspirational takes me back to high school we had amazing band stage band toured europe went to Styx concert with my college debate team san antonio i was alive more than ever great memories Texas A&I 1979
Kudos to you!
This live version with these incredibly talented young people never gets old!
Bought tears to my eyes - These kids are incredible - When they smiled it was an Amazing Heartwarming Feeling - Thank You !
Totally agree.
It did the same for me. Happy tears to see young ones play such great music.
Really cool version of this song!!!
brought tears to my eyes too. Totally didn't see that coming!
I cry every time the young man plays the violin lead
OMG, I was 18 years old when this came out. I am simply blown away and in tears from hearing this redition of a classic Styx song. Thank you Tommy Shaw and all who participated in this concert. Awesome! (and you have to credit Dennis DeYoung for the original arrangment too, he was absolutely the heart of Styx)
Ha. Me too. Love it
The greatest band ever seen them ten times
Amen to that about Dennis
This brings tears to my eyes every time.
He sounds just like he sang the original 40 years ago! Bravo! Tommy Shaw you haven’t aged!
Brought tears of joys to my eyes in these very turbulent times!
Well, considering he was a 'fetus' when he joined the band (Dennis' term, not mine) he's still just a baby! Seriously, though, he's always looked young.
Never a big styx fan...but damn, this is freaking awesome, great job....would love to here this live.
@@davidisenberg9441 Have you listened to the entire Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight albums? If not I highly recommend them. Some great stuff there. Lots of great stuff in the pre-Shaw era as well. A truly great band.
He looks and sounds awesome!
My wife and I have seen Styx live dozens of times over the years and absolutely love their music. Tommy Shaw has one of the iconic rock voices of all time. First class move to include all these kids in a never-to- be forgotten performance. Just beautiful!
Agreed. I'm on my 47th time. Covid stopped my goal for reaching my age in times seen live.
What a difference it makes when young people channel their energy into building something positive and uplifting, as opposed to tearing down.
The little girl with short blond hair in the front of the choir sings with such unbridled joy, it's great to see! I love watching young people who perform music with passion. we need more of this.
@@susankelly7567 no, not Liza's daughter, but she was such a doll.
This makes me so happy to see young people enjoying the music of my younger days ❤
The smile on the face of the principal violinist after his first solo is just priceless.
Nailed it, knows it.
I believe there is a reason that the first-chair violin is usually called the "concertmaster".......
Leslie here.. I think it’s absolutely amazing that Tommy Shaw, not only play’s..sings and seems to enjoy the performance as anyone else!!

God Bless!
How have little tommy’s solo material gone over? Like a lead balloon?
What a load of shit John. Stop lying to people.
Tommy has always been the best!

I won't worry ever again about the youth of America taking over this great United States. Everyone must be as proud of you as I am !
And on a side note I lived in a house in highland Indiana that they used to rehearse in the basement before they were big.
❤
Thank you Styx's , Tommy Shaw and my friend Lisa who went with me to the REO Speedwagon and Styx's concert. This song led my way to sobriety and kept me from slowly killing myself from drugs and alcohol 2017 became my road to sobriety because of this song God Bless.
There should be a love button, like just doesn't do this justice. What a magical performance.
Agreed!!!!
One of the best things Tommy can do at this stage of the game is showcasing his songs alongside these cool young musicians. And interesting to see how a rock song translates into magnificent music when the big orchestra is added to it. Their songs always were complex works of art for the rock scene, which made them all so good.
hisroyalness2 , you are talking like it is all past, have you listened to Styx latest stuff? The Mission?
No, I haven't but will try to find it. Thanks for that info.
hisroyalness2
For rock lovers he and Styx are still relevant. I love how Blue Collar Man was translated this way.
Michele G So fab to hear what might seem basic, come to life like this, showcasing the chord structures.
I have been there!
Geez, would have loved to have been there. Always good to hear about folks that share their amazing talent so unselfishly
Great story. I first met Tommy in the mid-80's. He was nice then , and he's still nice. Success never spoiled him. That's why Dick Clark helped Tommy , when Tommy went solo. The way you treat people *matters*. Glad you have a great memory to treasure. 🌲
You lucky soul!!
This makes me miss performing in school so much. I played the trombone for 8 years, but after picking up the drums and bass it fell by the wayside the last 15 years or so. It's time to get back into it. Thanks for the inspiration!
That young man on the violin ( 3:11 ) took my breath away
First Violin.. and he killed it!! Kudos to the young man!! Applause, Applause!!
That kids insane on the violin
Tears of joy watching that.

Agree 100%!! The memory of playing with Tommy Shaw will last a lifetime for these young, talented musicians & chorus!!
Out of all these kids, there just may be another Tommy Shaw in a few years . And that's very exciting.
That Asian young man playing the violin is fantastic! Asian youth excel in everything they do! 👍🏼🥰
"Fooling Yourself" is is an old song now, but it is poignantly relevant today, in a time which sadly has a literal epidemic of stressed out and anxious young people. The message of this song is timeless and valuable across the decades.

Thank you!
