But if it's from a store, then you need extra patience since it might experience bad condition or being treat improperly.
I agree I've had pet store hams and they are so difficult to tame then one of my new hams came to me preggo and her babies are so much easier to work with since I've had time to work with them ☺️
Just take her out for a little bit gently and put her and my lap pet her and put her back. Or just pet her back in there after giving food. She didn't like her ears being touched but Oreo was okay with that.
I've had a couple hamsters and was fortunate enough to never be bitten. One trick I used was to always wash my hands with strongly scented soap before picking them up. That prevents them from mistaking it for food and discourages a bite.
'scoop' them slowly from either side with your hands in a cupping motion. They'll usually just lift their feet and stand on your hands. It doesn't startle them as much as wrapping your fingers around them, and reduces the chances of them panicking and trying to struggle/bite. Never once been bit by a hamster in 20 years, even tricky rescue hamsters.
I was expecting to see precisely what you were explaining. I personally think scooping them or having them step into your hand are the best two ways to pick them up.
i usually do this but sometimes my hamster still bites me its probably cause it new but can anyone give me some tips such as how to pick them up and what to buy....thanks!
My old Teddy Bear hamster bit everyone but me. Being a preteen at the time, I found this hilarious. So I named her Cuddles, so more people would pick her up and get bitten. She always sniffed before biting though, so something about my smell she realized day 1 wasn't something to bite.
It’s also so cute when taming my hams, they’ll usually bite my fingers since they think it’s also food (when I got treats on my palm) but as they get older they learn the difference and it moves from thinking my fingers are good and biting, to test biting, to fully avoiding biting my fingers when grabbing seeds from me 🥰
I got a hamster that was 1 month old, it's about 3 months old now, it never bit me and I fed it from my hand a lot of times. I guess it's just a matter of time until I get bitten for the first time
i washed my hands before petting my hamster, forgetting that my soap smells a bit like almond, my new hamster now thinks my hand is a nut, started eating it but got very confused when my hand wasnt a nut 😭
I've been keeping hamsters for 20+ years, Syrians and Dwarf, and I can count the amount of times I've been bit on 1 hand. It is one single hamster that's behind the worst bite I've ever received; my current Syrian female. She'll turn around and bite, or attack the hand if you put it down too quickly. She's a rescue, store bought originally by the previous owner. She simply doesn't have a good mentality and is very frightened of everything. It took me 5 months for her to trust me, and she's still got a strong mind of her own all the same. In order for me to pick her up safely, I have to let her know I'm there, and she needs to "put her back" against my hand to signal she's OK with being picked up. If she doesn't do that, I will back away and leave her alone. I am 100% convinced that most hamster bites are due to owners buying hamsters from stores and immediately attempt to handle them, or they're bought for young children that do not understand how to not scare them. Very nice video, I hope it will teach many new hamster owners how to avoid getting bitten, and help many hamsters not to be rehomed as a result of their owners becoming scared!
Thank you for this, there’s lots of tutorials out there that are bad and I’m super happy about this one. Honestly i would say when taming a hamster you have to just hold them very often and be mega calm and speak with a soft voice if you have to speak. Feed them food from your hands, don’t expose your fingertips, pet them gently or put your other hand near them while they munch away and they’ll soon get used to your hand as something that brings food and pets.
I've had lots of hamsters in my lifetime and I can say that I've only been bit maybe 2 or 3 times and I'm sure they were scared lately all of them have been very sweet and easy to hold. I was lucky to get a couple of them from a breeder and they were used to being handled early and by children to buy I was also lucky to get a few from a small local pet store that were easy and loved to be held. One time I was getting a hamster from the pet store and as soon as I opened the lid they all started climbing in my hand to be picked up saying Pick me....pick me. It was so hard to decide which one to bring home with me. There were about 5 of them. I didn't have the room or cages for all of them. Thank you for the good video. Hopefully it will help other new hammy owners how to take care of them. They are so cute. 😍💖
Only had had a hamster once. It was relatively docile despite me being a child with zero knowledge on hamsters. It would let me hold it for a bit, but if it would certainly bite if it got too annoyed being handled. They weren’t hard bites either.
Reminds me of going to the pet store in the mall because you could pet the mice and hamsters. I always let them climb on me first before picking them up.
Even if it s just a tutorial, seeing hamsters just make me so happy. Recently, my hamster died but he is buried now, and seeing the beige one reminds me of him. Thank you so much for this video!
I'm amazed how calm your hamster are when you hold them. My Syrian hamster really hates being touched! My hamster came from a pet store though, not a breeder, so I think he got very little human interaction before I adopted him. I try to not touch him or pick him up unless it's absolutely necessary, like when I clean his enclosure. Since he does not like to be touched, I usually use a small box to take him out and transfer him to a temporary bin while I clean, and give him a treat. It's basically the same as the mug method, except with a box. I don't think any of my mugs are quite big enough for him to get inside of anyway, lol!! The box is much easier on him than me picking him up with my hand
@TurboGamer what do you mean, "what is the point"?? I adopted this animal, he's my responsibility, so of course I will keep him and take care of him... I've read in many places before adopting him that it's not unusual for hamsters to want to be left alone, or be "ghost hamsters", which I'm pretty sure is what my hamster is considered, and that is fine with me. I won't simply dump him on the street just because he doesn't want to play and cuddle like a dog would. I didn't seek out a hamster to adopt with the expectation that it would be the same as having a dog... otherwise If I wanted an animal that I knew 100% I could always play and cuddle with, then I would have adopted a dog!
@@Oboromaru i've had 2 hamsters bought from stores that were timid and didn't want to interact. Fixed both of them by taking their cages into an empty bath tub and letting them out and just letting them run around with me in there sitting still. Its a bit nerve racking the first few times and yea i got nibbled both times the first go around when i moved my hand closer but both of them built up over a few days and i was able to pick them up and smooth them and so on. You just need to get into the head of a hamster and understand that their mentality is that of prey, in the wild they build a burrow and only come out for food then retreat back inside because everything is a threat to them. Once they know your not a threat your good to go.
Just to prove hamsters won't bite unless agitated: our Syrian boy SPAM (tm) is the softest, sweetest, tamest, most empty-headed hamster to ever exist. He has never bitten anyone. Until my new bf stuck his finger through the cage and got bitten immediately 😆😆 just goes to show its not usually in their nature to be violent unless provoked
This is very helpful advice! Always respect ur pet! I've found that if you speak to them in a calm soft voice, after washing ur hands, approach them with ur hands low & in front of them so you don't scare them to death! They are prey to birds that dive from above & behind to snatch them for dinner. I use both hands to scoop them from under their feet. Very noninvasive, plus doing this slowly & gently, gives them the option to walk away if they don't want to be picked up. Just give respect & they will be sweet & calm. Unless you have a hammy that is just not human-friendly! Just like us, these cuties have personalities. Many don't like people, the same as many people don't like people.😉😊
My hamsters communicate with me by softly biting on my finger. Usually it means that they are ready to go back to their enclosure. Its amazing that they are capable of communication. I’ve never held one on it’s back like you do in your video.
Taming a hamster is quite hard because trust is quite hard to earn. This is why im really proud of myself to tame a 2 cute Russian dwarf hamster their so adorable.
I have had two hamsters who never ever bit anyone, who would fall asleep in our hands or neck and respond to being called by a nod of head, always eaged to be with us. The cutest most loving little things in the world...
I think it is important to mention that you should leave your new hamster alone for a few days before trying to pick it up. They are most likely going to be skittish in this new environment and bite due to nerves. My cutiepie little mixed dwarf Hanna was bought from a tiny shop near my house and it was immediately obvious that she had been taken good care of because of how fast she settled in. She has only ever bit me on accident (mistaken for food), out of boredom (when I hold her for too long) or out of tiredness (when I let her freeroam for too long) but never hard enough to actually leave a mark. For a while we even had a silent agreement where she bit me very very very gently to signal that she wanted to go back to her enclosure. Most of the time it was so soft I didn't even know if it happened or if I imagined it. Now she does not even do that. I guess I am just better at understanding her. She is my first hamster after all (had mice before). To pick her up I usually call out to her from afar so she recognizes me and does not hide. Then when she comes closer to say hi back I gently cup her with both my hands. She never climbes on my hand herself but stays still and calm when being picked up. I just love her so much ❤🐹❤
The way you pick them up is so beautiful! But compared to petshop hamsters they Don't know how to pick them up correctly thank you for posting this video!
I really love your videos on hamsters! They're informative but also cute and welcoming. It's kinda like a mental health wholesome boost as well as learning more about my hamster! ♥️ My current hamster is a pet store hamster, I saw her after wanting to get another Syrian for a while and just fell in love, but next time round I really want to contact a breeder and go down that route! Especially seeing how much love and care you put into the hamsters you raise~ 🥺✨
I don’t have a hamster, never had a hamster and never even wanted a hamster. I have NO idea how these videos showed up in my recommended and even less why I clicked on one to begin with. But they’re some of my favorite videos to watch now. I still don’t want a hamster. They just don’f seem like the right type of pet for me, but I love watching you take care of yours
When I want my little Simba out of the cage, I open the door and knock with my fingertips on the door then he comes to look where the noise is coming from. Then I move my hands to the lower part of the door and start sweet whispering and then he comes out on it's own so I don't need to pick him up. Like a Doggo😂😂😂😂
This is an excellent guide for all animals! They are not objects, treat their wishes as important and they will love you, it's quite easy once you learn how.
Hi! Just a heads up and a warning! 1:40 - be careful as some hamsters might not like being upside down (with their belly up), i think you should give a warning for that. I had many hamsters which did not let me turn them like that and hold them in upside down position, they were getting stressed and sometimes reacted with a energetic, almost violent wiggle to 'break free' and rotate back. This can cause the person to drop the hammy so if you try it, do it close to the floor and do not force your hammy into that position if he doesn't like it. To be more specific: this was happening almost instantly the moment they were turned over, so there is really little time to react to that. But overall, great video as always, love you bye!
Thank you for caring about hamsters. There are many ways of picking up a hamster, and I have talked about the scooping method in my previous taming guide th-cam.com/video/RiIkUA4J3uA/w-d-xo.html. All hamsters are different and there isn't one rule that applies to all (different hamsters may prefer different ways of being picked up). All we have to do is to keep learning and improving :)
My lovely lady lavender doesn't tolerate being on her back well either. I do it for body health checks but quickly. She doesn't like her back paws being unsupported but she is the first hamster I have had that disliked it though. They all have their own personalities, likes and dislikes however the basics on approaching and lifting from @Kumaqq are spot on.
@@kjevans4705 What I personally do is lift them above my head to look 'under the hood' without turning them. Always close to the floor or on a bed for safety. But yeah, I wish my fluffballs would be more docile and let me do the same as Kuma does to her hamsters :D
My hamster is very small and shes a robo, she runs away everytime i try to pick her up. Any tips? (ps: i can't take her to run on the floor since shes too fast and too small to catch but i use a huge play pen that she cant escape if someone is watching)
Robos aren't the type to ever want to be picked up. It's very very rare to get on who will let you do so willingly. I had a sweet robo and she was fine without ever being handled. Whereas most hamsters need taming, Robos want to be left alone. They're super fun to watch though!
Robos are way too fast, but the mug/taxi or scooping method should work well for dwarfs, feel free to check out this vid as well th-cam.com/video/RiIkUA4J3uA/w-d-xo.html :)
😂omg your videos make me laugh and it’s a big deal , since last 3 years had been kinda really hard , so thank you very much 😊 Also thank you very much for incredible job that you are doing , showing the world how to properly treat , care and love small animals and. Outpour of joy that they can bring into your life ! Also superb job on editing your videos !I wish I could do that 😅
Sometimes, a hamster will draw blood. Other times, it won't. If your hamster nibbles you, it's okay they're trying to play or get to know you better, etc. You can take your hand away if they do open their mouth to bite you but usually when they open their entire mouth they're yawning, or trying to bite to defend themself or something, But the bigger the hamster is the smaller their bite is ❤
My hamster, Boba, is an absolute natural escape artist, she's a rescue hamster that is a golden Syrian one, and she managed to survive all alone in a house for months after her owners abandoned her T.T she is so sweet but she is ridiculously clever lmao
My Lulu is so shy, ive had her 3 months and finally got her to climb into my hand a couple weeks ago. I always give her the option. Love that little bug
I bought my Russian dwarf as a baby and I’ve held him everyday. He comes out of his snug when I ask if he’s ok in there around 9pm and we play and he knows it’s treat time. He’s so loving.
This is bringing back memories of when I used to have hamsters.... every time I would let them "roam" they went a little wild! Like the got a 5 minute taste of freedom and they weren't going back without a fight! 😂🐹
Hi kumaqq! I just wanted to thank you, I just got my new hamster today!! But the only reason my parents let me is because of your info and most importantly, your CUTE little hamsters!! I love them a lot, and you too!! I wish you the best with them, and I thank you a lot 🐹💗🌸 (P.S her name is tofu!) sincerely, BUBBLEGUM ☺️🌸💗
I only owned one hamster my entire life but he was a good fella and never bit anyone. He was an escape artist though so that was an entirely different ball of wax.
i got my hamster from a store and i think i´ve been doing a good work with him, he has never bitten me or any of my family, i think he is pretty chill, i give him his space if he doesn´t want to be held :3
Also if your hamster doesn’t like being picked up you can find other ways of loving them. Like rubbing your hands on stuff for scenting (not too much), talking to them and just cleaning their enclosures out and giving them enrichment.
Tap the litter and let it know you're there. Pick the hamster up from behind. It might not like it at first, but it'll get used to it very quickly. I've had dozens of hamsters and this is the best technique I've found for picking them up
Gawd, still trying to tame my little girl, shes only 10 weeks old and getting much better. Was so afraid when she first came home and still is a little jumpy when hold but I tell you something, I had no idea how fast Syrians can be. She is like a jumping rocket and way faster than any of my gerbils or mice lol If she wants to be, its crazy actually how fast she can move
For anyone who has hamster that love bite you, try to use a hand gloves 👌 make them used to our touch, but pls note most of the hamster doesnt like touched for so long 😄
i think it depends on whether your hamster is bought from store or reproduce at home. It's easier to tame a hamster when they're still a baby, cause they can have more time to know your scent. But if it's from a store, then you need extra patience since it might experience bad condition or being treat improperly.
All hamsters are different, but no matter where you get yours, patience will pay off :)

I got real good at picking up and handling my pet hamster Hawk. She was so nice and it was calming to pet her. She was like my little therapy hamster.
Just take her out for a little bit gently and put her and my lap pet her and put her back. Or just pet her back in there after giving food. She didn't like her ears being touched but Oreo was okay with that.
I find that if you flick it hard every time it bites you, it correlates biting my hand with pain so it doesn’t do that!
@@SegularRpork... Because it is pain for them? Don't do that. There are other methods, without pain for both sides.

Cutest thing I have ever seen. Great video 😂❤️🔥
Guinea pigs owners: I don't have such weakness
I hate a nasty stinking guinea pig..
I love the cover of the videos
0:13 is so cute😭
It looks like a booger
Its a lil fluff hamsters its so fluffy❤❤🐹
The perfect tutorial💜✨, and please I have to know, why do my hamsters always think my finger is a carrot😭
Maybe u ate
You should need to wash your hands before and after eating and also before and after holding you're hamsters that is why he or she bites you're finger
@@Kamustakayopo Nooo😭

@superboy Brody bro shut up
This is an excellent guide for all animals! They are not objects, treat their wishes as important and they will love you, it's quite easy once you learn how.
Как мило! Какое уютное и познавательное видео. Смотрю с удовольствием. Снимайте, пожалуйсто, больше! Жду с нетерпением!🤗
Your hamster’s are so adorable and so cute:)
Спасибо, всегда интересно смотреть и познавать! 🐹😍
Your hammys are so fluffy
3:06 😂😂😂😂
I love what soft, goofy, and adorable creatures hamsters are but man they do have a certain pain to their bite lol
Clementine doesn't really like it when I hold her in this way, so I am very thankful for this video, and it is already working! ❤️
Just use Tongs
the screaming got me everytime XD made me LOL.

That’s the type of hamster I have!
Como amo essas carinhas fofas
works so well!
also your hamsters are adorable
Ty I’ll try this on my hamster she keeps biting!
Keep trying, you will be fine when you know how to dodge their bites. Success never comes without failure!
@@KumaQQ ☺️
Thank you this really helped❤
@@KumaQQ Ok! thank you!!
😂omg your videos make me laugh and it’s a big deal , since last 3 years had been kinda really hard , so thank you very much 😊
Also thank you very much for incredible job that you are doing , showing the world how to properly treat , care and love small animals and. Outpour of joy that they can bring into your life !
Also superb job on editing your videos !I wish I could do that 😅
How did u know i was bitten?
100/10 best hampter channel
Can you heart my comment if this works with gerbils?🐭🐹
The screams get me every time! XD
1 : pickup hamster
2: place it backwards infront of pacman frog
😂
OMG WAIT. YOUR HAMSTERS ARE ADORABLE, I CANT! LOL 😂
Introduce yourself first is great advice ❤
Lol, those aren’t hairy hamsters, those are hamstery hairs.
aha my hamsters so tame since the day we got her that she doesn’t even bite, even new people she’s never seen before! she’s so nice.
Hi kumaqq!
I just wanted to thank you, I just got my new hamster today!! But the only reason my parents let me is because of your info and most importantly, your CUTE little hamsters!! I love them a lot, and you too!! I wish you the best with them, and I thank you a lot 🐹💗🌸
(P.S her name is tofu!)

I only owned one hamster my entire life but he was a good fella and never bit anyone. He was an escape artist though so that was an entirely different ball of wax.
Fluffy is so FLUFFY!
So cuuts
I watched this when I was sick and it made me happy Thank you for making hamster videos The good work!
i got my hamster from a store and i think i´ve been doing a good work with him, he has never bitten me or any of my family, i think he is pretty chill, i give him his space if he doesn´t want to be held :3
I don’t have hamsters but….. OMG it’s the cutiest video i’ve ever seen in my life 😍❤️❤️❤️
To hold such a fluffy creature is every ♀️dream. He so lovely ....
lol my hamsters were so chill that I could grab them while they slept. 🤣
Cuteness overload. I liked all my pets over the years.
I have little syrian here and this video is very helpfull for me! Thank you very much for this video and u have very cute hamsters!❤❤❤
I adore hamsters. I just wish they lived longer than two years.
Our hamster loves popcorn too
I subscriber
Also if your hamster doesn’t like being picked up you can find other ways of loving them.
Like rubbing your hands on stuff for scenting (not too much), talking to them and just cleaning their enclosures out and giving them enrichment.
Wow beautiful animals...some of yours are very big, that's insane, love all of them, thanks to you, one of my 3 hamsters is called Ms Paprika too😍❤️
Thank you, I will try this
That is the fluffiest hampster I have ever seen 🥰
I totally lost it at 3:05. I didn’t see it coming. LOL
The cutest baby’s ever
If they aren’t baby’s I didn’t know
Hey
I love hammys
.
Lol
So cute
This has definitely cheered me up. Look at these fluffballs
They are so cutee i also have like that hamster thank you for the sharing
My hamster be like if i touch its nose:GIMME DAT FINGER NOW
Watching these foofballs is so relaxing 😌
Tap the litter and let it know you're there. Pick the hamster up from behind. It might not like it at first, but it'll get used to it very quickly. I've had dozens of hamsters and this is the best technique I've found for picking them up
I freaking died of laughter at 1:12 😂😂😂
Gawd, still trying to tame my little girl, shes only 10 weeks old and getting much better. Was so afraid when she first came home and still is a little jumpy when hold but I tell you something, I had no idea how fast Syrians can be. She is like a jumping rocket and way faster than any of my gerbils or mice lol If she wants to be, its crazy actually how fast she can move
For anyone who has hamster that love bite you, try to use a hand gloves 👌 make them used to our touch, but pls note most of the hamster doesnt like touched for so long 😄
The are the cutest things ever. I grew up with a few of these furballs.
I don’t know why but I just love this video, it’s so cute .
Thank you, this was very helpful!😀
