Good evening! Thank you so much for over 6,600 subscribers - I really hope you enjoy this walk by the seaside in Whitley Bay, on a glorious summer's afternoon!
Now, in the distance from the beach we could see St. Mary's Lighthouse, which has its own fascinating history! It was built at the end of the 19th century on what was then called 'Bates Island' (no Hitchcock relation - I hope), but before then the island was also home to a pub and a chapel, both of which disappeared after the lighthouse was built :)

My first house I ever knew was in Brook Street, just around the corner from the Spanish City, but the last one I lived in , was Grosvenor Drive, just right aside of St Pauls, and I used to play in the graveyard. There's a grave there that mentions a lifeboat man who sadly died attending the Fated ship, The Rohilla, just off Whitby... the lifeboat crew there asked for assistance from the Tynemouth Lifeboat crew, and although I used to play in front of that grave as a child, I never understood the significance untill I moved to Whitby 12 years ago.! Sadly, my then partner died, but I was pleased to be able to bring him to Whitley Bay a few years ago to show the connection, once he passed I also moved from Whitby, and I just can't wait to get back to my beloved North Sea. Thanks for bringing back so many memories in a beautiful, informative video!

I loved Whitley Bay as a kid and have fond memories of the funfair at Spanish City. My grandparents used to take me and my brother there all of the time. I’ve not been back for years. Glad it’s open again. It was depressing seeing it sit there all derelict. Good to see they’ve pedestrianised the outside too!

Sounds like some wonderful memories! The Spanish City really is an icon in the hearts of many a seaside visitor - and it's so wonderful to see it full of life again after that wonderful restoration, something for Whitley Bay to really be proud of :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

To quote Mark: Yeah, now I am searchin' through these carrousels and the carnival arcade, searching everywhere, from steeplechase to palisades, in any shooting galleries where promises are made, to rockaway. From Cullercoats to Whitley Bay. And to rockaway. And girl, it looks so pretty to me, like it always did, like the Spanish city to me when we were kids.

Nice to see my home town on TH-cam .. many thanks
The seafront is certainly looking good now after having a serious makeover, part of the 'North Tyneside Council’s Seafront Master Plan' which is not quite finished yet. I just wish the water was warmer 😁
The Spanish City site was totally boarded up for many years and looked in a sorry state, even when the Olympic torch passed by in 2012, although the boards had been repainted.
I believe The Beatles stayed at The Rex Hotel in the 60s

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thank you very much for watching! It's very impressive how they've brought the seafront to life in recent years, and I'm so glad to see the Spanish City standing so majestically after the regeneration! If only the sea water was warmer then it really would be like a Spanish beach resort 😅
Interesting to hear that The Beatles stayed at The Rex back in the '60s - that didn't come up in my research, so always lovely to learn things like that :) Thanks!

Thanks for this video! Fond memories of where I was born and brought up many years ago, and due to tragic family circumstances I had to leave when I was only 11... it broke my heart. Then I used to hear how it went into decline even more. For my 52nd birthday last year, my partner booked a holiday , in two weeks time... I cannot wait! this will always be my 'home'.... he might have trouble getting me to come away again!😂😉💖

We both have been here before but are coming back in March just thought I'd check to see if much had changed since the last time we visited, a good job has been done to the promenade, and they appear to have to have tidied up the general appearance of the place for the better.

The Spanish City funfair was thriving in the 1950s. As a 10 year old I could get a real rifle and fire ammunition at a target. Unthinkable today with health and safety. There were dodgems, the house that Jack built, and lots of rides and attractions.

I have the answer to why Whitley Bays name changed. You were on the right track about a body going to the wrong destination. The details are written in my grandmother's diary. She was a young woman in Whitley at the turn of the 20th century. If you would like the details let me know.

@@LetsWalkUK Here is the excerpt from my grandmother's diary dated Sept. 21, 1901. "On Thursday we had a most romantic funeral. A certain Mr. Oliver of Tynemouth died at Polton, Scotland, and wished to be buried with his people here. Consequently great preparations were made, especially as he was a member of the Holy Saviour's Church Choir, of the Rowing Club, and of the Rockcliff FC. At three o'clock the hearse went to the station and the H.S. choir assembled at church; and then it was discovered that the coffin and corpse had gone to Whitby by mistake. Telegrams were exchanged, but the mourners had to disperse till later. As the choir men were going, some of them announced their intention of coming back. 'Very well' said the Vicar, "Do so, and as my choir is coming to practise at 7:30pm, I will detain them and so make up a choir'. This was agreed on. The corpse arrove [sic] at 8:4t, and the procession entered the Lych-gate as the clock struck nine. Although not expected, all the H.S. choir turned up, so both choirs were put together, making a total of 16 men and 25 boys. The night was fine and starry and the wind had dropped. The station-master had lent numerous lamps to light the churchyard [St Paul's]. The singing was good and the sence very effectie. Crowds of people assembled."
I enjoyed your video very much, and am planning to visit Whitley Bay in March of next year (I live in Canada. My grandmother emigrated with her husband and family to Canada in 1924 and lived in Ontario) She was born in Whitley 1879. Died in Ontario in 1937.
