I lived in Whitley Bay in the 70's, my father used to take us to spanish city to play in the rides, kind of a micro Disney park.Park. in the 90's used to go drinking in the pubs each time I visited my relatives.

Was just there a few weeks ago! It was one of our stops on our visit from the US. Beautiful beach for sure! Your video filled in a lot of the history, thank you!

Great tour but no mention of Park View? It was voted one of the top 10 shopping streets in Europe by the Guardian for all the independent shops it has. It's just along from the Fat Ox.

The death of Mr Cooper ( the owner of the Spanish City) , sounded the death knell of Whitley Bay, that and the "new residents" complaining about the noise ,and all the tourists, I remember the days of the "Jock fortnight", seafront absolutely packed, every guest house full, South Parade jumping, all the bars spilling out onto the street. now most of the bars have closed,no amusements, no rides, no reason for tourists to visit, the locals ("mainly the council") want Whitley Bay to be "The Brighton of the North" however the difference between Brighton and Whitley is the weather, we are on the North east coast, we don't get most of the mild weather you get on the south coast, as for what they have done to the Spanish City, well if you want to get some over priced fish and chips then yay!! you are all sorted.....apart from that .......... Whitley Bay as a tourist location is dead, if you walk the main shopping street, Whitley Road you will find the majority of the shops are red cross, help the aged, and a variety of other charity shops, the rest are indian, chinese, pizza, kebab shops fast food places. Long gone are the day's when thousands people would come to Whitley for a holiday , the summer season used to support the town through the winter, but as more and more restrictions were brought to bear, the cutting of night club opening hours from 2 am to 12,
the noise restrictions ,and then the closing of "The City" slowly but surely, killed any reason for tourists to travel here for holidays , more and more guest houses were closed, turned back into residential homes or sold off, if anything Whitley Bay just shows how easy it is to kill a town, the sad truth is this has been done deliberately, self interest, the need to push house prices up
(as an example My parents bought a house in the early 80's in Whitley Bay for 30k, the same house sold for +300K in the mid 2000's).
