  • Nick Jennison reviews the Orange Super Crush 100 Combo Amplifier-a 1 x12-inch solid-state amplifier packing 100 watts of tube-emulated power. Building off their successful Crush Pro, the Super Crush 100 compact design features a 2-channel JFET preamp and a 100-watt power amp that pair to make it sound like you're really wailing on a giant tube amp. Equipped with four stages of gain, a passive 3-band EQ, and Orange's aggressive Dirty Channel, the Super Crush gives you plenty of headroom on your clean tones while shaping your overdrive to just the right level of classic Orange grit.

    I've owned both solid states and tube amps. These new solid states are amazing. I play on a fender mustang 3. On stage I can play next to a tube amp that's the same as the setting I'm playing through. If you had blind folds on. You can't tell the difference. They even capture the feel of these amps on my mustang. It's amazing.

    This is easily the best review of the Super Crush 100. Well done! I loved seeing how the sounds changed as your adjusted each of the settings.

    Now that’s how you review an amp! Visuals were excellent as well. Well done, much appreciated!
    I purchased one of these babies about a year ago and I’m still experimenting with it. This is the best SS in the market imo. Go Orange!

      Is yours really dark....... I have to really crank the highs on the eq and my eq on my jhs angry charlie in order to get enough treble. I might have to send mine back.

    Great review! 2 additional considerations that I think are worth mentioning.
    1) The speaker in the combo has a quick disconnect 1/4 cable so you CAN record through the cab sim out and have no sound coming through the combo speaker. You mentioned that you can't do that. That is incorrect.
    (I have done this and it works great)
    2) You can disconnect the onboard speaker like I just mentioned and plug into a larger cab without buying the head / cabinet version of this amp. That's what makes this such a killer combo amp for the money in my opinion. So much tone and so many options.

      Thank you for this comment... So based on your comment the way I understand it is (assuming the speaker is plugged in) I could also use that XLR line out to run a power cab simultaneous if I wanted to add to the volume? I am asking because I got one of these last week and I did not think it was loud enough (so I sent it back-I'm hoping it was a lemon it did have a dent in it like from the factory).. but a guy from Sweetwater did mention that to me I didn't realize I could play the combo and have the lineout going at the same time... That is sort of like the boss katana 2x1212 that I traded this in for-in that you could be playing the combo and have a lineout going to another Poweramp at the same time... 70 be clear the XLR out on this works the same way pretty much?

      I’ve never tried what you mentioned but i assume it would work just fine. the xlr out is a direct signal and it’s piping through wether you have the speaker plugged in or not so your idea should work.

    Awesome review of this amp! Im really interested to know if this could also be an option amp for home use/badroom volume. Does it sound good as well if you play on lower volumes? I find the sound versatility pretty amazing

    The video with the best tone of this amplifier, thanks Nick, I subscribe. I was thinking of buying the OR15 with PPC112 but I'm not a big fan of V30s, or maybe changing it for a Creamback. I'm looking for a Blackberry Smoke brown sound. Does this combo seem to be close and less expensive to that tone or is it too boxy? What do you think? I can't try all that here, greetings from Argentina

    I own a 100 crush solid state and ive been thinking about purchasing a 1x12 cabinet to put under it just like what you have there; aside from the DI output; I was thinking of putting some foam or a small blanket into the cavity of the amp to bring down the mids; to try to simulate a closed back amp 🤔 @ 24:28 I find thst this combo has plenty of volume for an open mic or a small venue; from: Scranton, Pennsylvania

    I’m sufficiently elderly to remember when solid state amps were a joke, lol. They were what you settled for if you were too broke to buy a “real” amp. Then Peavey breaks out with that Transvestube series, and I sacrificed some ramen noodle money and bought the tiniest one. I gotta say, I was impressed. It didn’t sound like tubes really, but it sounded good! Thank the Lord for rescuing me from that kind of poverty and I have since amassed good gear including great Bugera 1960 and Marshall Origin 50 tube amps, which I still prefer, but not nearly by the wide margin as back during Great Depression Mk II ( the wretched 80s). I have this, and I’ve had a B-52 solid state head I’ve had for 20 years which absolutely kills. If I had to only have that amp and an alright speaker cab, I wouldn’t die at all. I’d be perfectly all right. It was strange to discover that there isn’t anything bad about solid state as I once assumed. But for whatever reason, devs used to manufacture solid state amps without the kind of circuitry that sounded good.

    So I’m jamming as a 3/pc in a pop punk jam band. I need an amp that cuts through a drummer playing with some heavy overdrive/distortion. I know the Katana is a all in one and I don’t have any pedals yet. I’m not opposed to them I’m just a new player (6/months) that only has a Yamaha THR10II. What does this amp have that the Boss Katana MKII 100 doesn’t have?

    • @chrisb8193
      @chrisb8193 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has analog distortion that does an amazing job at emulating the sound and feel of a tube amp. Its based on the company’s own flagship Rockerverb.
      The Katana is a mash-up of digital and analog tech, the distortion sounds artificial and doesn’t “fill the room” nearly as well as the Orange.

      Tone. But that's subjective.

  • @mrcoatsworth429
    @mrcoatsworth429 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    4:09 Hey, that is not completely true! The volume controls of the channels changes the kind of saturation and compression. That way you can push the clean channel into a nice light overdrive (like you did later in the video). And the drive channel also responds a lot more "tube like", if that makes sense. I liked it best with the volume on full and the gain dialed back a bit. I have yet to see a demo video of this amp where this is actually shown.

    • @greg6162
      @greg6162 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it similar to the Boss Katana where you drop the gain as you raise the master so it doesn’t get muddy-ish and stays defined and focused? Asking because I need an amp for a pop-punk band I play in that can cut through a drummer and handle distortion/overdrive at those loud levels.

      I quote directly from Orange Amplifications:
      “Speaker output connections- It is possible to use the Super Crush 100/Combo without a speaker connected. Just make sure the unit is switched off when connecting or disconnecting a speaker.”
      So the answer is Yes you can. 👍🏻

    It sounds great...but it just doesn't have that valve harmonic crunchy overtone sound. I am sorry...but playing through a tube amp just sounds superbly better to me. I think the valves put the delay in the sound out of the speakers. It's like singing or playing drums on the backbeat. Does that make sense? Being right on...doesn't sound right on to me. One more thing...tube gain drives my playing insane. I am not sure being in a solid state of mind is good for rock n roll. Word to your Marshall...😆

      I just started playing guitar (6/months) in a 3/pc pop-punk jam band. I currently have a Yamaha THR10ii and a Fender Player Plus Strat w/Fender noiseless SSS pickups and that’s it… no pedals or other gear. I’m considering this or Boss Katana MKII 100. I need to cut through a drummer with some distortion for that genre of music at loud volume. I want whatever will sound the best and allow me to get my tone. If I can buy one all in-one multi-FX pedal in the $300 range I’d be open to the idea. I just don’t want something overly complicated as a new player still learning to tone shape. Would a Boss ME-80 be good for the Orange? Sorry if I’m asking dumb questions I’m just trying to figure things out in a short amount of time

    • @nigelsaul698
      @nigelsaul698 ปีที่แล้ว

      @greg6162 I wouldn't recommend the Boss ME80 it's not gotten a send and return effects loop.. so you can't do the 4 cable method .. the new Boss ME 90 that's just been released is worth a look as has send and return..

      @@greg6162 I have a boss katana MKII 100, and considering this as my next upgrade. The katana for sure is versatile, but the fact that for most tones you have to connect it to your pc and fiddle with the software really turns me off from it. I also have an old orange crush 30r and a boss me-70, sure the orange isn't that great but it's less hassle to figure out with the boss pedal than my katana. Katana is great but for some reason I just can't get it to sound right with pedals and the built in effects are quite off for my taste. I've played a bit shorter time than you, and I think it was a mistake to buy the katana for me. I also wanted something simple, even tried multieffect modellers with all of that fancy stuff but that also lead to endless menu diving and stuff, not for me. I'd rather get one amp, put a boost infront of it and maybe a delay in the fx loop.
