But the point of said red-herring is the belief that Spike is willing to hurt Buffy emotionally by going back to his pre-chipped ways by getting the chip out. And she would believe it after what he nearly did to her in the bathroom. It's a better red-herring than many people think.

Exactly! That's why I thought at first watch he wanted to be human rather than remove the chip. I never believed (or maybe hoped) that Whedon wouldn't write Spike/WIlliam so brilliantly just to go back and contradict everything he wrote then just to fall back to a trope and make him the "big bad" again.

Lovely reaction. I've always loved that Xander was the one that reached Willow. He's the most human of the gang - the one with so many flaws, making so many mistakes, but as you say, he's loyal and he's always struggling to do the right thing even when he doesn't. Having his humanity, his ordinariness and friendship be the things that counteracts all the magical stuff Willow is using to escape her grief is a perfect solution to that arc.

On rewatch you'll notice how vague the dialogue around Spike's quest is. Writers wanted fans to assume it was about the chip, but it's never stated. He blames the chip for his situation, but the request is left very vague.

I actually noticed the first time when this aired. My thing at the time was just that you don't phrase it that nonspecifically unless you have a reason to, let alone repeatedly in that way lol since sure once or so could be an oversight. Like it was one of those weird cases where trying to gloss over something that would otherwise be so easy to say outright, actually brought more attention to it. But it apparently worked for a lot of people so I think this is a little more of a me-specific problem lol.

@mb7626 No. It's an overall writing problem-not just a "you problem". How did the demon even know what Spike wanted, when he never outright said he wanted his soul back? Why is Spike constantly thinking about the chip and bringing it up, if his focus is on getting the soul? Why is he calling Buffy a "b*tch" when he's supposedly doing all of this for her?
Sloppy writing all for a plot twist.

This season almost goes full circle. Started the season with Buffy climbing out of her grave into darkness and ended with her climbing up into the light. And the crayon speech from Xander was very powerful, making cry every time. Alyson does so good at emoting and when she cries... so do I.

As per season 4, episode 21 (the joining spell that brought about the anger of the first slayer), Willow represents Buffy's spirit. Giles represents her mind. Xander represents her heart. And Buffy herself represents the force of will and action (the hand). Buffy has had a broken spirit throughout this entire season, as represented by Willow. Buffy's first plan was to force her spirit to cooperate. That can't work. Her next plan was to reason with her spirit using her mind (Giles). That doesn't work either. That's why it had to be Xander. Because the only thing that can heal a broken spirit is the heart.

Fans aren't wrong for thinking Spike wanted his chip removed, but thinking so after his soul was returned is the mistake as assuming so before his soul was returned is a red-herring. Spike is soulless before his soul is restored and was never trust-worthy. That is why the writer wrote the bathroom scene. Not only did the writers want to remind people of that after so many years of people praising him due to the actor's charismatic performance, but in-universe, Spike needed to officially do something so heinous that he would realize he isn't good even when he does good and his only option to be what he thought he would never become is a soul, which means even the act of getting a soul is selfish enough that it shows he's soulless. So he went to get a soul, but the writers used it as a red-herring to make fans believe he was after vengeance, when he wasn't.

    • @Junejane4
      @Junejane4 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      A bit of Spoilers probably
Only actor's charismatic performance? Was there nothing else? Really?
They literally wrote how she trusted him with protecting her family and he justified this trust protecting it when Buffy wasn't even alive. They wrote how he was able to sympathize with her when she was crying. How he was ready to die, giving up everything he had protecting her and her family and fighting side by side. And when the audience fell in love with it, they got mad and decided to remind something. Too late. It's their fault that this happened. Yes, some goes to Marsters talent too but it's not only that. And they shouldn't have punished the character and the audience for the actor's talent anyway. Usually series praise these kind of things and use it to the benefit of the show. Not fight against it.
And the way how they implemented this "he was never trust-worthy" idea was never worth it for me. A bit of tautology here. I understand that he is a demon but they used the dirtiest way. The jealousy that he was loved by the fans while being a souless vampire and the desire to do smth about it reminds me of how some hollywood directors used to write aggressive sex scenes for their lead female actresses because they didn't reciprocate directors feelings and they wanted to punish them, use sexual violence against them. And they were unable to fully return from this scene during the series. They trapped themselves with that scene and didn't have enough time to build smth proper for these 2 characters although they tried to. There are couple of attempts. The very idea that they write RA while at the same time knowing that they will start developing their relationship romantically even step by step but right after that is beyond me. I understand that he is different with the soul but one season is not enough to get rid of stigma. And what is funny eventually with him having a soul they kind of returned to smth similar to Spike from middle of s5 till first eps of s6 image, you can't say that he was William or absolutely different character. So what's the F point?

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@Junejane4 I never said the actor's charisma was the only thing. I said it was a reason. But I also didn't want to be listing all the reasons when that wasn't the point of my comment.
My position on Spike boils itself down to his quote of, "Why did I do it? Why didn't I do it?" His soulless self won't ever let any good acts or emotions in him be genuine. I believe that quote represets that for more than just the bathroom, but his character as a whole, including his choice to get a soul.
There's nothing wrong with you having another opinion, but my comments are what I believe.

When I first watched this back in the day, I didn't fall for the back and forth trope of him becoming a big bad again which many shows do. Whedon doesn't do that too often, he's a bit more creative. I thought back then he wanted to be human again so I was still surprised he wanted a soul to make amends rather than seek vengeance on Buffy.
Very true to the character William/Spike to go this route. I disagree he's like an average soulless vamp or like Angelus tho. Before the chip Spike showed signs of humanity not only as a human but as a vampire. Not saying he was good but he was never as soulless as the average vamp and definitely like Angelus. Spike like in the mythology on this show still exists in his body but a demon inhabits them as well. So there's an internal struggle. Also let's remember Spike could always hurt Buffy, so that's why I didn't fall for the red herring.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@JoshuaMartian-go3tm Whether or not he's like Angelus is always going to be debated among fans concerning his actions to Buffy in the bathroom. The real point though is that he thought he would and once the bathroom scene happened he considered himself that bad. The struggle he goes through doesn't mean he's a good guy, though. He not trustworthy, imo, from S2-S6. My position on Spike boils itself down to his quote of, "Why did I do it? Why didn't I do it?" His soulless self won't ever let any good acts or emotions in him be genuine. And he only realizes that because of the bathroom scene when he does something Angelus would do. I believe that quote represets Spike's character as a whole, not just the bathroom tragedy.

I love this finale so much! The show was building towards this for a long time. In Restless, Willow dreamed that her new, cool, powerful self was just a costume she was wearing over her shy, weak, nerdy self, who even Oz and Tara would ridicule. She couldn't see any value in that version of herself, and that was the core of her magic addiction, as she explained in Wrecked. Buffy and Giles were part of her transformation and power growth, so they couldn't help. Only Xander knew her from the beginning and loved her all along, so only he could get through her pain and rage to help her finally grieve.

You're not wrong for thinking he wanted his chip removed. It was very intentional to make the audience believe that was the change he wanted by making him so angry about it all, implying he wanted vengeance rather than atonement. But unlike Angel who always had his soul forced upon him Spike chose it which is always more interesting and shows even more so the difference in the two vamps.

That is why I've always felt that ensouled Spike is so much more genuine than Angel. Angel's soul is a curse designed to make Angelus suffer. When anything happens to weaken/remove that soul, he quickly and gleefully reverts to sadism. Whereas William the hopeless romantic is still at Spike's core, and he sought out and fought for his soul so that the love he felt could be untainted. That scores so many more points in my book.

Stargate SG1 would be a very interesting choice to watch. While fantasy genre allows to treat personal issues (love, desire, depression, inside demons,...), science fiction, on its hand, brings to treat more general topics (disagreements between scientists and servicemen, war, moral dilemnas, cultural differences, geopolitics, what is right or wrong, "are our values universal?", etc.), but like in fantasy, everything is "softened" by the unrealistic context and mythology of the show. Plus, the characters of Stargate SG1 are very lovable, and, like in Buffy, there's always humour shots in every episode.

People harp on season 6 for some reasons, but its always been my favorite. Some of the analogies are heavy-handed, but it's simultaneously much darker while incredibly funnier during many moments. Alyson Hannigan is such a great actress (omg everytime she cries.... I can't EVER hold it together... Idk what it is, but I feel her pain everytime she expresses it on screen, as well as the apathy and comedy.. the moment where she's talking about how Tara was the only thing that made her feel wonderful, how she gors from apathetic to emotional, to "hell no, I have to go back to thia hard ass facade," its just agh). Sarah Michelle Gellar is also fantastic (all of the actors are great for the most part), and I just love this friggin show lol. When Giles says to Buffy Willow has killed a human being and she has to live with that, we see Willow again appear with no feelings or emotion. Totally cold when Xander says to Dawn about Spike 'if he wasn't trying to rape your sister' Good point is the improvement of the special effects and sets etc. This is of course was helped greatly by switching to UPN as S6 and S7 had massive increases in budget. Willow thinks she now taken Giles power after invading his body, but good perception here in that what Giles has given her is not absolute power but some kind of poisoned magic. A great conversation with Dawn and Buffy in the cave where she asks Buffy about the attempted rape. A brilliant final scene where Xander uses the power of love to overcome Willow's power as he can see she is weakening. Brendon and Hannigan really knock it out of the park here. Even though Xander has has no super powers he once again saves the day as he did in Prophecy Girl S1 where he saves Buffy's life, and The Zeppo on S3 where he saves them all unbeknown to them. He doesn't get the credit he deserves sometimes. With all this going on we forget about Spike, but the ending scene is probably the most important scene for the arc of the Series, great writing again. Great direction too by James A Contner, who also directed some of the very best episodes of BTVS and Angel, and one the best episodes of the The X-Files too in 'Soft Light'.

I think Season 6 is the most depressing season, mainly because it's the only time Buffy herself feels without purpose. In the first 5 seasons, no matter how horrible things get, she knows she has a destiny and that she herself is incredibly important and meant for greatness. This season is the only time she truly feels as lost as us regular people. Her destiny is fulfilled. Her life was done. And yet she's here...searching for meaning...wondering why she's alive...paying bills, dealing with mundanity. It's painfully relatable. And it makes it even more cathartic and satisfying when she finally moves through her depression, understands why she wants to live and climbs out of that grave again (but this time instead of alone, in the dark, she's with her sister in the light). 💙

Thank you for this honest reaction ❤
Regarding your questions, I'd happily watch you react to the X-Files, since I love that show but can't get myself to watch it again on my own because of some really gross scenes and somewhat disturbing stories, and for some reason I have gotten so sensitive that I can't handle it anymore. But it's also a lot of fun, the characters are so iconic and I love the era and the whole atmosphere.
There are also some episodes that 'Supernatural' writers stole from very shamelessly.. 😅
But you need a long breath, not every MOTW episode is great.
I don't think you should do more shows than you do now. I tend to leave these extremely business-like channels because it often feels like the reactor is not really invested in the show (even if they act as if they were). I'll go as far as saying that to me it would be perfect if a reactor only watched one show. I get that it's not an option for most reactors, but still.
Whatever you choose to do with your channel, it should be what makes you happy 🌻

Dear Dakara, to your question: You can have both, if you save a slot for short lived shows, so you can have a lot of them in a row without getting in time trouble. There many great shows with 1 - 4 Seasons like Dollhouse, Tru Calling, Dark Angel, Firefly, Forever, Fastlane, the Pretender/Profiler double package, F/X, ALIAS... so many to choose from. You'd love Firefly of course, and then Dollhouse seems like a logical leap from there to see the next thing in the Whedonverse.
That said, if you want to replace Buffy with something that was directly inspired by Buffy and feels more like Buffy than any other show ever made (as well as being just an excellent show in its own right) then you should go with Veronica Mars.
VM was created by a Buffy fan inspired by Buffy and stars Kristen Bell as the titular character who is a high school detective. It's a brilliant show that does class struggle better than any other show has ever done it, witty dialog, great acting and heart, great story, and Buffy cameos and guest stars and recurring characters galore (including Joss Whedon himself!)
Million other amazing shows you could get into, but that will fill the hole in your heart that Buffy leaves for sure.
I'd recommend against X-Files and Stargate as both are fine enough shows, but quite dated and the quality is a huge step down from Buffy and there are just SO many amazing newer shows out there that are so much better these days. Get around to them for sure, but they are very long commitments and really just don't stand the test of time nearly as well.
Shows like The Bear, Ted Lasso, House of the Dragon, Fallout, Community, Invincible, Stranger Things, etc. are all going to give you a way better experience and get way higher engagement on TH-cam edits.
Keep up the great content as always!

Congratulations on wrapping up another season! Honestly, I had a lot of free time this past week and probably got through all of your Buffy rewatches. Your ability to take different perspectives (and of course your humor) really makes this channel something else. (No joke, was about to go to sleep but then this video popped up)
With this finale, now that I've rewatched it, it really cements my feeling that the relationship between Buffy and Dawn is my absolute favorite. Seeing Dawn grow up and Buffy learning what real love is really gets me. You just want the best for the Summers Sisters knowing what they've been through.
Looking forward to seeing your reactions for the final season.
As for suggestions, it's not EXACTLY in line with the shows on this channel, but the short lived series Hannibal is an absolute favorite of mine next to Buffy. Considering your ability to dive deep into character motivations, I'd be greatly interested in hearing your thoughts on each episode.

However! He could have still provided encouragement and support for Buffy remotely. And she could have reached out as well. I dont know if they ever had any contact after he left. Buffy is still learning some adult lessons too. She's so young, only 21 which in my mind is a grown child. Lol

The season six is ironically my favorite season and the one that hurt me the most. I was very upset by Tara's death and by the relationship between Buffy and Spike (Angel team here! ;-p ). But at the same time, it's the season who treats the most what I expect from a fantasy show: personnal issues. Vampires and werewolfs stories have always told heavy things about human desire, fears, how we can be tormented, torn between different emotions.
Season six has treated depression, suicide impulses, desire, sadomasochism, addiction, emancipation, and so much more. Finally, it has treated what is one of the main topics in the show: Motherhood. It was there with Joyce, and it's now very present with Buffy and Dawn. The entire show is a way Joss Whedon found to honor his mother. He told it in many interviews at the time.

  • @sherrysink3177

After spending a lot of time feeling annoyed by Dawn (back when I first watched the series), I really really loved those scenes between her and Buffy in the pit. Dawn kicking ass was really cool, and the two of them finding a shift in their relationship and understanding of each other was marvelous. Definitely made me tear up.
I also remember getting really teary with all the Giles stuff. I was so afraid he was going to die, and found myself getting super emotional (and angry - after Joyce and Tara, I didn't trust that they wouldn't kill off Giles).
The only thing that didn't completely get me at the time was the Xander and Willow stuff. I don't know if it was the week break between episodes, or all the frustrations I'd been feeling with the whole season (the loss of Tara, the idiocy of the "evil" trio, what Spike did to Buffy, Xander leaving Anya at the altar, no one happy at all), but I remember being a little underwhelmed by Willow's change-back. I was glad for Xander, and relieved when Willow's hair changed back and she finally grieved. But I remember thinking there was a little something missing that would have made me ugly cry. Maybe if they'd talked more about childhood stuff that had already been brought up in past seasons instead of a yellow crayon that I don't remember them ever bringing up before, maybe if she hadn't pounded on his chest dramatically like it was a soap opera (looking like she really barely hit him, so the emotion felt a bit sedated)... I don't know what it was but something held me back from being fully engaged in that final bit. I was relieved that she changed back, and I liked Xander saying how much he loved her and that she's his best friend, but after all the nastiness she'd been doing, I don't know what I thought I needed back then, but I needed something else, something more. I remember being much more on the edge of my seat with Willow fighting Giles, and Giles stopping her with his own magic (and him telling her how sorry he was about Tara) -- I think I was holding my breath at that point. So I think I wanted to feel that level of tension in the big moment before Willow let go of her anger and her dark magic. Instead I felt like something was missing, just a tiny something that would have made it resonate much more deeply.

Excellent reaction and a great job for the most difficult of Seasons. Of course it’s Xander to touch Willow and any humanity she has within. This finale brings so many ideas and concepts started in Season 2 , full circle. Giles and Buffy talking was a continuation of Lie To Me. Buffy and Dawn was so similar to the talks Buffy had with Joyce in both Innocence and Passion. Willow and Xander have their I Only Have Eyes For You moment of true forgiveness and unconditional love. Finally all that started in Becoming Parts 1&2 have been fully told. The darkness of the evil Willow allowed has been told. Buffy’s acceptance of responsibility and moral choices regardless of the costs has no been accepted and included with the love of a Mother. Spike started his obsession with Buffy and it is ready to be finalized somehow but the setup has started. Just a brilliant ending to a 5 year story and preparation for the last lessons and battles.

An interesting thing is that now Dawn is the same age as the Scoobies around season 1. They had to handle saving the world and Buffy even died around that age. So I guess it both makes sense that she’s old enough to be included and they’re knowledgeable enough of the risks to want to keep her out of it. Of course some sort of balance needs to be reached. She’s no longer the key that needs to be protected from hell gods or shortness. She’s lived in the supernatural realm nearly her whole life-whether lived or fabricated. And the monks made her out of Buffy-whatever that means. So I guess we’ll see how this plays out…

Magic has a price. For bringing Buffy back from death, Tara was that price. Osiris's Guardian of the Gate was lying about it that it was just another regular death, and his casual lie blew up his face. He at least didn't give it away right then and there, because spilling the beans would have been worse, like no way out.
Either Willow or Xander or Tara had to die for Buffy to live. Should have been Xander, but main characters, ya know? Dawn could not die because she was a kid, and the Powers That Be sent her to Buffy to be protected. By Killing Tara, the show can go on with No romantic relationships at all, perhaps they want to explore more dating horror stories -- Can Willow move on, how can Buffy and Spike get back together or can they ever after all that mess? Will Dawnie get a boyfriend, or will some new characters enter the mix?
Lets see they fought Nosferatu (the master), Zombie Gods, Praying Manitis, Inca Mummy girl, they fought the Judge, they fought hellhounds and the Slayerfest assasins, a giant snake mayor, they fought a chaos wizard, Vampire dopplegangers, werewolves, nightmare demons, they fought Angelus & Drusilla, horny robots, they fought Frankenstein (Adam), they fought the first slayer in their dreams, they fought a Hell Goddess (Glory), they fought demon biker gangs, they fought a demon, a dancing demon, no something isn't right there, they fought addiction, they fought marriage, they fought three idiot mad scientists, they fought grief, abusive relationships, money problems, Fast Food, Beer Bad, Ammesia, even substandard plumbing. Finally they fought growin up. What's next? Well its the Hellmouth, it'll think of something terrible.

It just didn't feel like buffy and although it's dark storytelling and Buffy is at its best with dark stuff, it looked different too. I just wasn't into it. The look, the feel. It's Buffy the vampire slayer but it's not buffy the vampire slayer. Dakara: If they bring Giles back just to kill him off, I swear to God...
Me: I felt the exact same way! And it looked so dire for a while there. I probably would have quit the show. To lose Joyce, Tara AND Giles? No fucking way. I get creating tension and circumstances for the hero to overcome, but losing all those people would be overkill. Pun intended. Seriously though, Willow killing Giles would have been unforgivable.

If Willow had killed Giles, she'd be over and done with. No coming back from that.

Season 6 is why Im not much concerned with rating seasons. In many ways s6 is horrible, dismal, and not entertaining at all. But I s1-s6 for me are an almost perfect series arc, (metaphorically covering an entire generation with the daughter of a single mother becoming her mother, and also the coming of age story of someone dealing with personal demons that no one else can really understand) so much so it raises the question what s7 is going to do, because s1-s6 is so complete.. and 1-3 were and almost perfect trilogy, and 4-6 were an almost perfect trilogy, suggesting perhaps there should have been 9 seasons in total.
This season completes character arcs for both Xander and Willow, and in doing so provides a resolution of sorts for Buffy as well. Every season has been about "one girl in all the world", a burden she could not put aside. In making Buffy neither the most important or the most powerful character at the end, she finally gets to live.
"Normal Again" IMO is very important structurally. It asks the audience to doubt the surface story they have been shown and try to look beneath. IMO this is asking them to look at the metaphorical story that has being told. There are all sorts of jarring moments that don't really make sense, the patronising behaviour of the watchers while not even providing her with an income, the multiple times her friends held interventions for her and (especially in "dead mans party") treated her very differently from someone who had saved the entire world. These actions make a lot more sense in the metaphorical story.

Fyi-that is not what happened, cruelly putting Amber Benson in the credits to kill her off. They worked HARD to get Amber Benson in the credits for a long time but the network would not allow it for budget reasons only and the Buffy team finally got them to agree to give her the credit she deserved on her last episode. I'm noticing a lot of people watching buffyverse shows do not realize you've got a bunch of writers/directors/producers that are a bunch of Shakespeare fans. Now I enjoy a good Shakespearean tragedy, but if that's not in your wheelhouse consider "this is out of cruelty" is a knee-jerk reaction.

I know its nit picking but at 3:35 it would be more accurate to say Harry Potter is just like this... you know ... because this came first.

Between X-Files and Stargate, I would pick Stargate. I watched X-Files for a while and then the movie. I remember it being intriguing and gripping when it started. But, to me, it became kind of repetitive and I lost interest in it. Stargate, on the other hand, I've seen SG and spinoff SGA multiple times and spinoff SGU once through.
Other shows I love to see reactions to:
Pushing Daisies (2 seasons, cancelled way too soon, but got to end appropriately, unique genre)
Psych (8 seasons, 3 followup TV movies, potentially 3 more)
Eureka (5 seasons, 2006 TV series, not be confused with something else with the same name, genre similar to Fringe and X-Files but with a bit more humor, favorite role IMO for a Buffy S7 alum)
    Dollhouse (2 seasons)

On retrospect I love season six. Its extremely flawed and the writing goes too dark, but its also a very raw season and the ending with buffy leaving the grave but now with Dawn is beautiful. I think season six is a necessary journey for these characters. Its a shame they had to get giles out of the way and kill tara to tell the story. They were the moral compass of the group and helped guide them, this season needed them to screw up. I hate that Tara died, in a way I would rather the dark willow arc was done with Oz as originally intended

X-Files is great, but Stargate is sooooo much better, it combines sci-fi, action, drama, humor.. etc. etc. (just like Buffy :)) If you havent seen the movie from 1994, you gotta first watch that. They did change relatively lot for the show, almost every actor (every main character, except 2 semi-main characters, who were important characters in the movie) also new characters was added, but it does continue to story of the movie, so the movie is a must to watch first.

Xander is just such an angry little boy on the inside. I get he saves the day here at the end, but GOD does that comment about Buffy's assault AND the dig that there's something wrong with "Summers' women" ever piss me right off.

You weren't wrong about Buffy dying seeming like it should be the final season of the show... originally S5 was the final season, so that was the finale for the show, but then another network picked the show up for S6. That's also why the Angel crossovers died out, because the shows were on different networks.
SG1 is a great choice as an ensemble show with a core scooby gang that you grow to love, but the pacing of the first season is probably even rougher than Grimm was, so bear that in mind.

no, _buffy_ was never in danger of cancellation after season five. wb wasn't going to cancel it. there were arguments about money but the two sides weren't far apart. upn didn't pick up a dropped show; they outbid wb for a show wb still wanted.

Why would he be the big bad for season 7 spike was already the big bad once in season 2 he went through a character development if he would be the big bad wouldn't make sense and spike gave up on getting that chip removed along time ago like season 4

when you make a wish, you have to be very specific. otherwise it might get turned on you. he asked be become what he used to be, but it's not a vampire without a chip, it's someone with a soul.

spike very specifically says that his task is to "give [buffy] what she deserves". he's obviously not talking about violence, because he can hit her even with the chip!

X-Files is fun, but I'd almost say you could stop after the first movie if you wanted. You'll still get the core X-Files experience.
