I have been fortunate enough to have the pleasure to see and hear them live, and it’s pretty much the same as the studio versions. They are really competent musicians 🤘
Henrik is one of the few players I’ve seen that actually needs and utilizes a 6 string! It’s not for show with this due 😮 he’s an animal! He is quite the tonewood tickler on that bass 😂
Getting back to this vid because I love your analysis. Mainly a guitarist myself I also dabble with keyboard and bass, but everything in your analysis is so interesting, both harmonics and technical stuff.
As a bass player myself, this was one of the best reactions with really great and relevant commentary that I've ever heard. It's obvious that you're very knowledgable. Great stuff. Your video just came up in my YT feed, so I clicked it. Probably because YT knows I like bass and Dirty Loops. lol. Definitely going to check out the rest of your stuff!
So interesting to see your breakdown of this tune, from a jazz harmonization and also a bass player’s perspective…. Loved all the insights you gave me, a really in-depth analysis (as much as this is possible when everything flies by at a million miles per hour 😉) As a non-bass player it still is fascinating stuff to me. Coming to mind: Jonah’s Korg ‘Harmonization’ video, Henrik’s many slap bass talks, an article with Simon Petrén, their sound engineer, on “Mixing Dirty Loops”, and just generally them quoting how to take a pop song and then “do the surgery’, destroying it :) by putting it into the loopifying machine… ‘Baby’ is indeed crazy, a complete masterpiece. Looking at that Loopified album, could you possibly do an analysis of their Lady Gaga cover “Just Dance”, please? Or any other tune from this album? The bass ALWAYS rules in any of these tracks (and saying this I’m thinking: all three of them rule, ALWAYS ;) Thanks for a rad breakdown, much appreciated 👍🙏 Oh and please, don’t sell that bass on eBay yet :)
That's really cool, I honestly haven't seen many interviews with the band to hear their insight on music, I should probably check a few out. I will certainly do more Dirty Loops at some point, if I don't sell my bass on eBay first...HA!
I really appreciate your way of humbly expressing your respect for the musicians while obviously beeing very skillful yourself, on bass as well as a teacher, mentor. You have a good setup of "chops".
I love the way you've de-constructed this tune. It was the first Dirty Loops cover I ever heard, and it blew me away! You should check out their "Follow the Light" with Cory Wong. It will blow your mind.
Thank you so much for that, I really appreciate it. Truly. And, LIKEWISE! I was pitched to check it out as a "jazz version of Justin Bieber" and about 3 seconds in, I forgot the Justin Bieber part. They are masters of this style, and I'm forever a fan. And, YES to Cory Wong...OMG, he is one of my favorite artists right now. I really loved their "Thriller" cover - I stumbled on that not too long ago.
Mattisson basses is a relatively small but well respected company started by bassist Anders Mattisson who lives right outside my town here in Sweden (which means I've at least sung some choir with him in the orchestra a couple times, weird half-flex!). They make custom basses for Henrik and have been for a while, I believe.
It sounds really good when you play. Like Flea, I like his style. As a songwriter though, too much theory seems to be a hindrance, you will find the harmonies you are looking for if you are prepared to train your musical ear.
Sounds about right. Definitely some coil splitting possible - it’s just got that gurgle-type of character to it that sounds scooped but not in a muddy way. It’s great and really lends itself to the slap parts.
Pretty sure I already made this comment, but scale the summit was so sick. I was talkin music with a customer at a job one time, older gal, probably in her 70s, and she played piano. She was way in to the classical world and some jazz. I showed her scale the summit, I think it was the whale song, something about whales, and she literally looked it up on her computer right then to hear more. By the time I finished the job she was stoked. She thanked me for showing her. That's the power of "metal".
At least on the new(ish) songs I know they double the bass with midi to get more low end. I have heard that in an interview. Maybe the did it here as well.
@@LowEndUniversity It’s doubled/programmed after recording by Henrik himself, not played live by the band. So a pure production thing. He said it was hard and boring work.
@@LowEndUniversity Leland is fun to listen to when he tells memories from old gigs and doing bas covers of songs he played the on in studio recordings and concerts 🙂👍🏻
I am loving the Jacksons! Always a special place in my heart for my Warwicks though. They’re both great for different reasons. Appreciate the kind words!
Henrik Linder is playing in at least one of Jack and Owanes tracks. And then move on to G.E.M. Henrik said in an interview that he had nightmares before the recording was to take place. Then you understand the level of difficulty.
Open strings and hammers in slap, also he is tune bass string not usual, different. look it on youtube " PLAY SLAP BASS LIKE A BEAST" he is explaine all.
Mark it says you’ve played on some chart topping songs I’d be interested if you’d go over some of your studio work that would be cool to hear you talk about
Thank you! Yeah, I say that as it's a reaction video "format", and really still is since it's a critical listen, which I haven't done really before. On my newer videos, I've worked hard to get a good balance of reaction and education, and pulled back some of the long-winded bits. Hope you can check them out! Thanks for stopping by 🙏🏼
Subjectively, Dirty Loops music sounds like few guys in the finals of the competition "Show your best musical skills". They do have skills but their music is not concise, has no artistic soul, no feeling, no authenticity, it lacks an idea for a harmonious composition.
He is definitely one of the most influential bassists in our generation.
No doubt! 💥
Henrik is a great player and seems so nice and chill too I’ve seen a couple interviews with him and he seems so humble and kind
Agree 👍
Met him and hes great.
You Sir have excellent musical taste! DL is comprised of 3 of the most Advanced Musicians on the planet!🎶
Couldn’t agree more!
I have been fortunate enough to have the pleasure to see and hear them live, and it’s pretty much the same as the studio versions. They are really competent musicians 🤘

I think he used every string and maybe even every fret on this tune 😅
Very nice to see you go into so much detail, it adds a ton to the knowledge of a novice like me. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great to have Henriks skills explained by bassist 👍
I did my best! It's tough to completely explain his talent. Thanks for stopping by!

Great reaction and analysis! I‘ve seen them live. And they to all of that on stage - with a smile of course. :-)
I really, really hope I can see them live at some point! I met Henrik awhile back and he was a sweetheart.

Reporter: "Just how many bass amps and speakers could you possibly need, Henrich."
Henrich: "Erm... yes."

Very good, thanks
Thank you too!
I knew I recognized you.....I remember you playing that Conklin 7.....Subbed man, good job with your analysis and breakdown....
Dang, that was a lifetime ago! Appreciate the nice words. And I miss that bass dearly sometimes!

This guy is not a reputable bass teacher if he’s just now hearing dirty loops.
Great video! It would be interesting to see similar analysis of their song "Follow the Light".
Very interresting stuff man, thanks a lot for this!
Appreciate that Colin!!
Henrik is my main inspiration on bass. He is the reason I also own a 6 string bass with a big forehead, like his 🤣
Nice!!
Check out Scott’s Bass Lessons interview with Henrick. I think he goes over this song, but if not it’s great to hear his explanation.
I like your details man!!! keep it up!!!
Make no mistake, Mark. Some of my favorite recorded bass sounds have come from your fingertips from Tetrafusion AND STS ❤️🤘
Wow, thanks! That’s very kind of you 🙏🏼💙

🤣👍
Wish I cd do a weird half flex like this, bro ;)
That’s awesome!! Nice flex too 😉😅
Anders is also not just a master builder…he’s also a monster bass player himself!
When I hear this song, I only think Dirty Loops. Still exhilarates me every time I hear it.
Hahaha, right?! As I said in the video, I’ll forever refer to it as a Dirty Loops song that Justin Bieber covered 😅
Nicely done. Henrick and Felipe Andreoli are my inspirations. Hopefully you can react on Felipe as well. Thanks
Love Felipe’s playing!
Yep! The bass Dirty Loops player is a monster player.
It sounds really good when you play. Like Flea, I like his style. As a songwriter though, too much theory seems to be a hindrance, you will find the harmonies you are looking for if you are prepared to train your musical ear.
These guys are just nutty.
Absolutely!
Great reaction and analysis, excellent
Glad you think so!
God damn I love your nailing-it insigts
The bass sounds like it's wired in parallel. It sounds kind of like a Ken Smith.

Please do World on Fire with DL. Henrik is doing an insane solo that will melt your brain.
I saw an interview with Henrik and he said the bass solo chord progression was composed in advance by the vocalist (I think).
Very cool!
At least on the new(ish) songs I know they double the bass with midi to get more low end. I have heard that in an interview. Maybe the did it here as well.
I didn’t catch it during this filming, but during the solo Jonah IS playing a bass part in the left hand!
@@LowEndUniversity It’s doubled/programmed after recording by Henrik himself, not played live by the band. So a pure production thing. He said it was hard and boring work.
Right on!
Leland Sklar is also a fan of Henrik, think he mentioned that in his channel some year ago 🙂

Henrik is playing a Mattisson bass.
Yep! I just was fuzzy on if it was ‘Mattisson’ or ‘Mattsson’ haha!

After watching Henrik play, I might do that too.
Yes. :)

For old school slapping Mark King for the double string stuff i'd say watch Amos williams..or Tosin abasi
I did hear on an interview that his basses cost upwards of 15,000 dollars... Good lord

Spiral architect Lars norberg
For This style only.
he is using ia different tuning so he can play open strings afaik not sure if that was for this song tho
Yeah that’s interesting…
He explained something like that on his interview on ‘Scott’s Bass Lesson’.
Makes a lot of sense :)
Better than the original by Bieber, the same with Thriller. D.L. are so talentet, i hope they come to Germany !!
