Henrik plays the lead AND rhythm guitar the same time in the solos...that is just to mouch to take in...and doing splits with rubber legs, 4 hands and a vice grip as "detuner (longer extra bottom range on the low string) :D I laughed my ass off!! :D Epic Dirty loops...the DL logo on Aarons back in "Def Leppards" font and in pink tights,.more toms and on a acrylic set with double bass drums as in the eighties Oh and then the "boy band "moves from Jonah in some elton John shades on 4 key boards :D You just have to love them !!!
The synth sound is a Roland pedal through an Axe Fractal controller which makes it sound like a whammy. He explained it to Scott and Ian on their TH-cam channel.
Great to find an intelligent, talented bassist react to and analyze this song -- in particular, Henrik's amazing bass part. I'm the former assistant editor of "Bassics" magazine and a contributor to "Bass Player." Keep up the great work!
@@LowEndUniversity No. I don't know him. Speaking of all things bass ... Have you ever heard Renaud Garcia-Fons on his 5-string, custom-made contrabasse -- both pizzicato and arco? Check out "Oriental Bsss" and "Navigatore." Not only is he playing several tracks of contrabasse on most songs ... but he composed, orchestrated, arranged and produced both albums; both with a 20+ piece orchestra comprising of both Western and Eastern instruments. His later projects are leaner, trio, duo, but all are exceptional. I guarantee they'll be life-changing for you.
6:41 Your remarks are dead accurate on Dirty Loops. I'm a more fusion-rooted fan so their Loopified album still brings me the best excitement and joy, but watching them evolve both in technique and in audience reaching efforts is something enjoyable as well. They have a better balance in their works in terms of where to insert those crazy harmonization and solos - previously in Loopified they clearly took a maximalistic approach, but in Phoenix they are much much more careful - and that's the major reason why it sounds so much more pop-ified.
Great points! I agree, they’ve really sharpened that element of their sound in terms of being efficient with how it’s used. Still waiting to hear if there is a full album announcement soon around this track.
It's both a parody of themselves and an homage to anthemic Stadium Rock. The visual presentations are superb. Henrik's extra alien hands look like a cheap, hinky prop from 1960s UK BBC TV SciFi series "Dr Who". This is Totally Joyous. Best Wishes. ☮
Good reaction! I like how Dirty Loops manage to change, and surprise us. I also think this song is totally awesome, but I was all confused after the first time hearing it!
He has the Octaver to the side, so he can sweep the pedal, and hit the Octaver button when the sweep hits the peak. The video shows the technique. He's been using this setup for a few years now. He does something similar on Follow the Light, but this is far more evolved, imo.
Seen this video som many times now and so many reactions - but hasn´t gotten old yet, though i thought song wasn´t for me really - love Dirty Loops! Can´t wait for the rest of the Album
This isn't music. This is parody by master musicians. I'm so fucking impressed. If any of you don't know Spinal Tap I invite you to check out the modern version here. This is genius level Big Bottoms.
Might be a bit long for a song, but Russian Circles has some pretty wild bass. You could also check out any of the bands Brian Cook is also in, which ranges from Botch to Sumac and These Arms are Snakes. "309" by Russian Circles has some of my favorite Brian Cook bass. It's crunchier than driving a dump truck full of gravel down a road paved in cornflakes. Another band that I think would be cool to see your take on is "El Ten Eleven". Their bassist plays a double neck bass/guitar too.
As I understood, this is a sort of teaser song for their upcoming U.S. tour. I really loved the "Phoenix" stuff to bits and the "turbo" album too but... I hope that they don´t go in this direction further ;-) For me, from the incredible looks -> PINK and the glamour style of the 80s, this looks ike a very humorous assault on Barbie´s World + this song is about a relationship coming to an end and one of them REALLY wanting to escape which is the total opposite to the epic bliss that this song is. It´s like a nuclear bomb... let´s see how this develops ;-)
Im sitting here wondering if this Mattisson bass guitarrs come from one Anders Mattison who used to play bass in a town called Örebro in Sweden for many years ago. I sang in some different choirs back then and this guy sometimes played bass in the band. As I remembering he was a really good bassist and he played a six stringed Yamaha bass. (Maybe my memory is letting me down..) Maybe its the same guy. Would be great if someone knew if its the same guy who are behind these Mattison guitarrs ? Same lastName and now doing exceptional basses. More than a coincidence ?
Yes, the bass maker’s name is Anders Mattisson ☺️👍 He also left a comment on one of the other reactor’s comments stream, to explain the setup of the bass which Henrik is using here. Super interesting. Check him out at @andersmattisson.

Love it. As an old fart myself how they use that massive 80' Power Ballad standing chords to build tension until you can barely take it anymore. And then they come with THAT part. Pure genius.
I love that Henrik can now basically be an equally insane guitarist using those distortions and then just shift back to insane bass player in a second!
man, you gotta check out Tom Jenkinson, hes been taking this style to the future for 30yrs. check out his project Shobaleader One. the Boiler Room video is the one to see. the band of the future! then check out his work as Squarepusher
this song is somethinge I 20 years ago would say sucked ... but today as an adult musician I understand the irony with the multiple hands, spandex and elton jonny flirt.. and this song EPIC!
Great walk-through! The synthy part sounds a lot like the techniques and textures used by Matthias IA Ecklund and Charles Caswell on guitar. Check them out!
Was super late to the stream, but hope it went well. This is mostly a request for you to check out for yourself - and not necessarily for a reaction. "Look Your Back" by Himiko Kikuchi. Has some solid bass.
FINALLY FINALLY getting away from the punk/indie songs and back to top flight bass players and more involved musical genres. Henrik is a monster, and Dirty Loops are the ultimate 'musicians' band. Great choice Mark👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I know this is a month after your review of Run Away, but I have to say you have not heard Dirty Loops until you hear “Work Shit Out“ and “Next To You “. YOU HAVE TO!
Yo Mark you have to check out a song from the new JFAC album, I’ll recommend “ The agony of seeping storm” the whole bass in the album is beyond stellar!! 🤘😎
I'm surprised they have half a million subs. The music seems upbeat- I'm glad there is singing (not just instrumental). I'm still not subscribing to dirty loops, because I like channels that post more frequently.

Its a whammy pedal ( well its a a expression pedal into a multi modulation/synth pedal of some sort doing the whammy pedal pitch thing most likely since the pedal itself does not look like the big wide digitech whammy one). Peace
The drummers hi hat and cymbal work matching Henrik is a nice touch too
Just thought about that.
The drummer writes the bass parts!
I watched this video as soon as it came out and I'm still not convinced Henrik doesn't actually have extra hands.
I’m not either. I saw the thumbnail and thought it was just sort of a picture - didn’t expect to see it in the video. Nice touch!
I think he have six fingers.

Had the chance to see Dirty Loops late last year at a club in Brixton. The guys are amazing live and so humble about it all.
He just explained in the Rick Beato Interview, that he sent a lot of Bass FX samples and Aron the drummer put it together in post production
Ive been waiting for this reaction since Friday

Think his pedal set is customiced for his use. Seen a few intrewievs with him and he dont even know him self else that how to use it 😅

I would love to see this bassist play with either EL Estepario Siberiano or Aric Improta. IMAGINE THE TECHY BRAIN MELTING THING THEY COULD DO.

Dirty loops was always pop, but complicated pop.
I'm just wondering which movie from 1985 this was featured in.
And king crimson
The pedal isn’t a wah, it’s a whammy which throws the pitch up instead of sweeping the frequencies (like a normal wah)

It's whammy effect on bass
If you were a bass teacher you'd know that if you're in the key of E it's a G sharp, not A flat.
Can I suggest you, Alain Caron with uzeeb
Funny that it's called "Run Away" because the whole vibe feels borrowed directly from Carly Rae Jepsen's EMOTION-era music.
It's a whammy pedal
At 2mins you say A-flat… Think about that again, it‘s not possible (being E/G#), we‘re in E major ;)
