    Cool. Nice clean layout of the internals for sure. I have had this dcf880 for several years and it has been great. It also works very well as an impact driver with a 1/2" square to 1/4' hex adapter (I have the Dewalt one). I also recently got the dcf911 as a free tool on a promo deal and it is super nice.

      Thats good to hear. I'm still happy with mine and almost exclusively use it with the adapter you mention (although my adapter is Milwaukee) but every now and again use it as an impact wrench with sockets. I think having the more powerful one would be better for wheel studs / nuts though.

    I have had the dcf880 for a few years. I probably use it a few times per month. I primarily use it to install and remove caging bolts in air brake chambers. I have used it working on my vehicle as it fits in places a larger impact doesn't.
    It is not extremely powerful but works good. If not overtorqued or corroded it will remove automotive wheel nuts but I wouldn't rely on it for that, I think a mid or high torque is better suited. I used a 4ah battery with the tool, I think reviews that complain it won't take properly torqued wheel nuts off are using smaller batteries.
    I just upgraded to a brushless dcf911 that is supposed to put out another 100 ft/lbs over the dcf880. I feel I have got what I paid for out of the 880.

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Julio, thanks for the comment. I've been using the 880 with a 5Ah battery and it seems to have reasonable power, although I agree with what you say, if one primarily wants to remove wheel bolts, you need a bigger more powerful impact wrench. For all the other needs, basic DIY work, it has enough power. Let us know how the DCF 911 works out for you.

      @@GrantBurton I put a short video up of it taking a wheel nut off a ford F550 which is probably 140% of the torque of a automobile wheel nut. only had it a few days but liking it so far. It's slightly taller and the motor housing is fatter, but the length of the motor housing/gearcase and anvil is about 15mm shorter. It has a very decent amount of power for the size. I'll try to post a link of my video.

    I have the 3/8 version. I was going to buy this one also but I think there isn’t enough of a difference to get it. If the 3/8 won’t do it I don’t think this one will get it.

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ironwood living, I also think it would be a better idea the get the larger, higher torque version (something like the DCF 899 size machine) if you already have a smaller unit.

    Great vid thanks. Was looking at an impact for home use ( car wheel nuts, mower blades and so on ) and this one seems to fit the bill. I like the relatively small form factor of the unit, and longevity will probably never be a factor for me. The brushed motor is fine in this regard, and i have a couple of DeWalt ( angle grinder, drill, impact driver, recip. saw, jigsaw, all brushless ) products already, so am familiar with their quality. Loved your teardown of the unit and found it very interesting, thankyou.

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks very much for the comment. I'm still pretty happy with my Impact... it battles a bit with some wheel nuts but eventually gets the job done. I think their Mid-range impact (DCF894 and 896 i think are the model numbers) would be better suited for car wheel nuts though. For mower blades and similar bolts and stuff, the 880 works well for me. Also adding a 1/2" hex adapter makes it nice for driving in screws... I often use mine like this.

      @@GrantBurton Thankyou, it has been purchased and it is spot on for what i do. I did one little test on my Golf 5 GTI by loosening a wheel nut, then torqueing tight to 120ft/lbs and removing again with the DCF880. Yes, it worked for a second or two, but did the job. Thanks again for your fantastic teardown and review,

    Very informative. Thanks.
    I bought a new one without battery. I have built a 5S2P battery. Even though BMS gives 21 volts(batteries are capable 30A discharge) It didn't worked. Led comes on/off but the motor is turning.
    So I thought it is the BMS problem and than I found a 21V60A capable power supply. I tried PSU and still no go! Led comes on and off. Nothing. Could it be a damaged unit?

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi cunbal, I don't think its a damaged unit... When i tried powering mine with only the two main battery terminal connections (B+ and B- which gives 20v across those two pins) the lights just flash but the motor doesn't run. When i plug in the battery and all 4 terminals are making connection (B+, TH, C3 and B-), the motor runs and the tool works as normal.
      I think (but I may be wrong) that the TH terminal is for thermal protection by way of thermistor and C3 is a take off from the 3rd battery cell (Measuring a fully charged battery between B- and C3 gives a voltage of 12.54 volts which leads me to believe its that 3rd cell take off).

    Hi,
    You might be able to take off the front housing of the dewalt (DCF 880) and replace it with the DeWalt (DCF 890) brushless 3/8" impact. They have the same body.
    On the Dewalt (DCF 890) you will get the brushless motor plus 3200 IPM and 2800 RPM. It's rated at 150 ft lbs.
    Now, that might be a interesting video to make if it's possible to do. Juat might thoughts.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jan, when you assembled the gearbox, did you insert the ring gear in the correct orientation? It has a flat side, which faces the front of the tool, and the other side has 'teeth' that stick up... that faces the motor. Maybe also try holding the motor in your hand, then inserting it into the gearbox and manually rotating the motor to see if it will rotate freely?

    Is it possible to swap out the brushed motor for a brushless motor

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brent... No, it's not possible to swap out the brushed for a brushless motor... a brushless motor uses a completely different type of speed control / driver circuit.

    One side of the anvil broke off. Can I still use it while waiting for the spare part?

    • @GrantBurton
      @GrantBurton  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The tool would probably still work, although it won’t hit as hard, but I wouldn’t use it with a broken anvil because the assembly would be unbalanced and only striking on one side (not equally on both sides)… not sure how those unbalanced forces would affect the bearings and housing, etc. but I don’t think it would be good.
