    From a psychological point of view, this is horrible, because it does not give the player the opportunity to empathize with a person going through a depressive phase with suicidal ideation. The viewer rather understands those who feel "annoyed" by the person's low self-esteem and "whining" instead of understanding how these negative thoughts are symptoms and cover up the person's actual personality. I really wish that game creators would consult with professionals and people who have gone through the mental health problems they want to portray. This sadly feels and looks as if an outsider has been trying to imagine what it is like to suffer from depression and suicidal ideation.

      Exactly my thoughts! It is borderline impossible to emphasize with with the character your'e playing because she's so negative. It's such a stereotypical, misunderstood view of depression that's really annoying to watch and listen to. It boggles my mind how these big game developers can't do proper research or consult (as you said) professionals and get a look into what the world of depressed and suicidal teens looks like.

    • @skiarytn6744

      I agree. They came too heavy handed with the MC’s mopey personality as soon as the game starts, so the viewer will have a bad impression of the MC throughout her journey. They could keep this personality for the MC if they presented it better. Even just have her explore the environment first, have her recount how she got to where she is, before loading her problems on the viewer/ player would be an improvement.

These things don't need to be so "blatant" or direct to do serious harm and it can be a little invalidating to constantly see media pieces imply that the more subtle types of abuse aren't as harmful. I get that creators want to exaggerate things to make them impactful but perhaps they should actually do more research and rely more on symbolism and architypes.

    I'm going to leave this here, just for any future devs or voice actors... I had not so great experiences like this with my folks growing up. The thing is, my mother and father never screamed hysterically "NO FOOD FOR YOU!" at me for not eating pizza. Everything was delivered softly, with this subtle tinge of disgust and anger, even when I was very young. "$25. That is what you're pissing away. You can't even count that high." I haven't seen many...maybe any horror games get this type of parental abuse right. Oftentimes, games like this fail to move me because I find the reactions so over the top in every circumstance. I know there are parents like this, but it seems strange that the protagonist's mother just sort of exploded into a monster one day to keep a man. I'm confused.

    • @Zelda00Gamer
      @Zelda00Gamer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +118

      Yeah the extremely overt kind of verbal abuse is real of course but didn’t ring true to my experience. Sure I got the “you’re a piece of shit I wish you’d die” kind of shit all the time, but there’s also this undercurrent of disgust a lot of the time. The little jabs they have to get in. The “no one will love you if you act like this. I’m telling you because I care!” Kind of shit. Like in mean girls how Caty explains girl world and how it was all subtle and underhanded. That kind of abuse exists too and would be perfect for psychological horror but I’ve never seen it done either.

      @prettyevil6662000 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +98

      Honestly after reading her mom's diary, the quiet disgust would have fit better. The kind of person who thinks they're doing better than their own mother did because they aren't screaming but are still showing how much they hate you.
      And the entire story about the brother seemed pointless. anita never mentions him. Not even after reading the papers about him! It's like she's in someone else's home reading about a random boy, not her own brother.

    • @snestendo
      @snestendo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +64

      Yeah, they never really hit it right. I would get "I'm going to stand here and watch you eat it. And if you spit it out, I'm putting it back in your mouth" in a firm, quiet tone. It was detached. It wasn't yelling. And if it was, it'd be right when the physical abuse started to happen, and barely comprehendible.
      But to be honest, this game was already setting itself up for failure with how the starting dialogue was so on-the-nose anyways. Nobody who has low self-esteem hears their voices yell things like "dumb" and "ugly-" they're usually phrases and conversations and memories that lead into questions or things like "and this is why you're ."

    • @mellisafan4470
      @mellisafan4470 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      Damn I'm so sorry you had to go through all that... But you're right, the media really needs to learn to be more subtle with these kinds of topics because abuse and bullying don't need to be so blatant and direct to have a profound impact on people. I know from personal experience too... I always feel that media pieces about these topics never come from people who have actually been through it. It's frustrating and pretty invalidating too.

      I once visted him and we went to a game con together when I was 13, my aunt gave me $200 to enjoy myself there, he was mostly silent the whole time then once we left he gave me this long ass lecture about how I was wasting money, type of a man that made me pour a bit of water into my chef boyrdees to get every last drop, now in my adulthood I feel like absolute dogshit if I dont eat everything including the crumbs.
      Thing is he was never exactly abusive or raised his voice or anything, it's just about what was said and how it was delivered as well as knowing his harsh upbringing which would play out in my mind during the lectures further cementing them.

    Aside from all the standard gameplay/indie horror-style problems everyone's pointed out, I just want to say, this game handles some extremely delicate subjects. Self harm, suicidal idealization, child abuse, the "cycle of abuse" stigma... all very serious topics that should be handled with great tact and skill, scripted with a precision tool. This team did not use a precision tool. They used a damn sledgehammer. There is no subtlety, nuance, or taste.
    For as much as they post that help hotline warning, the game really goes hard on reinforcing a lot of very unhealthy and even outright dangerous sentiments around these topics, from the way the act of self destruction is repeatedly framed in beautiful imagery to the way blame is haphazardly thrown around with those who survive.
    A friend of mine who was an artist committed suicide about ten years ago. Seeing the topic treated so carelessly, so tone deaf in both concept and execution, I'm just in too much disbelief to even be mad at it. It's audacious, almost comical, how over-the-top bad this narrative is while framing itself as insightful and compassionate. I wonder who greenlit this.
    I don't think it's inherently distasteful to make a story on this topic, or that any such story is doomed to be as shlocky and misguided as this, but this one needed a few more rewrites.

      I'm truly sorry you had to go through that with your friend, I hope you're healing ❤ My biggest criticism is also the lack of subtlety with these sensitive topics however, I'd like to point out that I don't necessarily think they're trying to frame self destruction in a beautiful way. Since I'm both Asian and an artist myself, I can actually relate to it a lot. The obsession with beauty almost to the point of self destruction, is very much a thing in many Asian cultures. I think it's even more so when you're the artsy and poetic types. The protagonist's self destructive behavior on the other hand was framed differently and not quite so "beautifully". There was the bath tub of blood so... Also, I think in the end we're shown that the protagonist doesn't deserve to feel guilty. Though perhaps they could have made it clearer. Your feelings are valid, I'm just offering my own perspective.

      @@mellisafan4470 I think that's a very fair point, and maybe I'm just not in the right perspective to see it. There were definitely moments of contrast, but I think more should have said more in refutation of the "suicidal angels flying to heaven" imagery that comes up repeatedly, even if more by the narrative than the characters themselves.
      I just never got the feeling that imagery was often presented without any challenge, plus a lot of notes that had a tone of like "yes it is pretty beautiful to think of it this way isn't it" which feels misguided at best and encouraging at worst.

      @@GolemCC Perhaps you aren't, which is understandable. I can imagine it hits really close to home, so it's probably quite triggering. When it comes to "romanticizing" depression I've always found it to be a complicated topic...on the one hand you don't want to romanticize it but at the same time a lot of us seek closure and meaning? I remember I did a painting on how those who end their life would return to the galaxy, as they came from dust so they return to dust amongst the stars. It was my way of making sense of the seemingly senselessness of the loss of life..Its my way of finding closure. Are we not allowed that? People take their life as a last resort, I don't think that portrayals either way good or bad really has that much of an influence on that choice. It's our experience of life, not really our views of death, that thrust us towards considering ending our lives. We probably all cope with things differently, and for me making art and poetry out of my struggles has always helped me cope. If I don't find the beauty in it I won't see the purpose of going on. Sure I believe I'll return to the stars but there's more beauty here on earth for me to create. I hope this all makes sense

      @@vvitch-mist20 i desperately want to interpret this as someone getting like 78% of the way through producing a beautiful, nuanced game about closeted and semi-closeted school-age lesbians in japan
      so the MC was supposed to have this motivating pathos where her childhood trauma becomes entangled with her trying to make sense of her sexuality and discern feelings of friendship/admiration/attraction, especially on the threshold of the transition from hs to college. Amelie, her closest friend, is someone who stands in contrast to her experience of neglect and abuse, while Maya, someone she admires, is someone whose art, which generates something "pretty" from something sad, receives the positive attention she can't achieve. The prospect that Maya, who embodies the unattainable, could be romantically interested in Amelia, who embodies the validation that MC is a worthwhile existence, rekindles MC's trauma that no one will ever return her feelings bc she doesn't deserve to be loved: MC could maybe deal with Amelie "leaving" her to go to college, but the idea that not only is she losing platonic love as well as social acceptance but that she also has no chance to receive romantic love (bc it isn't that her queer affection is rejected bc they aren't queer, they are queer and rejecting _her_) is unbearable

    It was weird of them to include that in here though. I know the purpose was to show there's a lot of issues compounding Anita's suicidal thoughts, but the childhood abuse arc felt pretty half-baked in the grand scheme of things (and we never found out what was up with her creepy brother?!). Reaching out and being there for your friends is often the best you can do.
      But some people will still continue down that road, even with personal support. The survivors are often left wondering what they did wrong, seeing media like this and thinking "if only I had said something that day". We all blame ourselves when things like this happen. But sometimes, the decision was already made.
      It's a complex and extremely painful topic that deserved a better and more nuanced treatment than this game was able to give it.

What's worse, is though the visuals, the soundtrack, and sound design were impeccable, the story has been told many times before in other games with the chief advantage that they did not have to shoehorn in the IP the studio paid good money for. To me this was more of a PC walking simulator than a Silent Hill game. I do get the whole moving into the future crap studios go for but just make a new original IP for it and don't try to capitolize on it by slapping the name of a best seller on it. Resident Evil moved out of it's zone with the Village but it still felt like Resident Evil. This formula has nothing that makes the game like Silent Hill.
    Combat-0 Fear-0 Tension- .05 Mystery-0 Puzzles-.05
    All fine for a PC walking simulator release not titled Silent Hill.

    So am I the only one that feels like the end is just her making more mistakes that hurt people unintentionally? Because she's now essentially holding Amelee's friendship hostage. If I was Amelee I wouldn't want to be Anita's friend anymore after finding out she stole that help note for such a petty reason but Amelee now has no choice because if she doesn't, Anita might off herself. Like laying more guilt on Amelee is really not a great ending, but it feels like the game thinks it is and that we should agree.

      @@shiro.euphoria I'm really bothered and confused by the amount of people saying the ending is so nuanced and they're happy for a good ending. Like what do you mean good ending? This is a horrible and manipulative ending. Amelee is now trapped with this person who bullied their third friend to un-life because if she doesn't remain Anita's friend she'll feel directly responsible. How is Amelee supposed to ever be happy and not full of guilt now?
      I've been on the other end of 'well then I should just do that to myself' too many times to not hate this ending. It's not intentional on Anita's part but she's still doing it and she's benefiting from doing it. It's so concerning so many people think this is good for Anita and don't seem to care to think through what this means for Amelee.
      (and Amelee is notably dealing with her own homelife trauma and predator brother. Which it seems Anita's never cared to know about and reacted as if it wasn't a big deal when she read about it. Anita's just not a good friend on top of now being unintentionally manipulative. Amelee's gonna be the next to go just because she's having so much mental burden stacked on her with no outlet to help her since Anita's only concerned about Anita. )

    I agree that chapter 3 was better. The environment and stuff fit better. I hated how disjointed the chapters felt. What does Anita's abusive upbringing, and her brother's death, have to do with he story about Maya? Is it just trying to make us not hate her? Because it didn't work. I still found Anita to be an awful person for what she did even after finding out her backstory. Chapter 2 was way too hamfisted in going over what she went through as a child. And the loss of her brother seemed to not matter at all except to just be another sad thing.
    I'm also super annoyed that Amelee's diaries were in there, with pretty obvious signs her brother's a predator and she's in danger in the home with him, and yet nothing is done about or with that. Why include that if you're not going to do anything with it?!
    There are so many dangling ideas that could make such a good story, could make such good monsters, such good fears and they're just either handled in the most hamfisted Bloober team way or just thrown at the wall and then forgotten.

    Konami is beyond petty and cruel. Just read some of the stuff they did to the people working with/under Kojima. The way they isolated them from literally everyone else in Konami. Would schedule them to be security or even work in the arcade machine factories. Konami really just wanted to hurt Kojima but he got out and started his own stuff.

    Considering that people have been saying a lot SH games tend to not get into why the original quadrilogy is great (going as far back to when Team Silent was disbanded and some of the Tom Hulette games getting mixed reviews), I'm not surprised that this game kinda fumbles a bit.
    To me, the quadrilogy also ended on some good notes that makes it hard to see how the series could continue (like Heather defeating the cult once and for all, and Henry defeating the last of the stragglers of the cult via Walter Sullivan).

    I think another thing about this is for me… you have two silent hills. One is an evil fucking town much to the tune of 1408 that deliberately screws with you and gets you to unalive yourself, the other is a therapist that takes you through exposure therapy… this was the latter and I much prefer an evil fucking town over it. And evil town has more mystery and a cult and a serial killer and can make your guilt manifest. That’s far more interesting to me than therapist.

      Like he said, it shouldn't be a Silent Hill game. I was bored out of my mind and tuned everything out eventually, which is surprising because I can relate to many of the topics in this, but I've seen others who had a better experience than me, so good for them. I hope that in the future if they want to do games like this, they make another IP and don't dilute what made the OG games so great with things that feel out of place because when things are so ham-fisted like this, it is exhausting and I miss the dread of the others.

    1:23:00 at this point i think i see how this insulting note motif COULD work. Imagine it was slowly taking over the floor and walls of places, like whenever she was in an Otherworld location it would turn into that. The character doesn't mention it and there are no disembodied voices shouting "loser" or "ugly," but it's shown in ways like when she talks with Amelie and says "nothing looks cute on me anyway." She's internalized it.
    The notes would be an external representation, a symbol, of her internal feelings.
    Then the bullying flashbacks would be more realistic, like when maya seems to exclude her and favor amelie, but there would be lots of examples of this from other characters, where Anita (iirc?) gets excluded or realistically bullied. Show it over and over and then Maya "taking" Amelie is the last straw.
    So when Anita talks to Amelie in a positive way, or even she talks about Maya or sees something about Maya's art, she shifts to the otherworld to be punished. In reality, Anita is recovering, things aren't fine but they're getting better, and Maya is gone (her art is destroyed.) In the otherworld, Anita feels the weight of all of the bullying and loss and ruined self-esteem, but Maya's beautiful, hope-giving art is still there, and so is Maya... In the form of a flowery monster.

    • @elvensith001
      @elvensith001 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I think that story would be about three bullied teens: Amelie, who jumped from the assault from her brother, family abandonment, and her lost future; Maya, who jumped next because she lost her gf, and because Anita blamed her for Amelie's death; and Anita, who is having a stress hallucination/is in Silent Hill, and jumps because of her self esteem and guilt.

  • @7593Alexander
    @7593Alexander 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    It's not a bad game but I agree, it doesn't really feel like silent hill. It feels forced, also they were very on the nose and cliche with the bullying, abuse, and depression parts of the story. The writing could have been a little better. They could have left out the abusive mother part and Anita cutting herself. Because it had nothing to do with the relationship with her friendship. Her concern throughout the game was that she felt isolated somehow, she was being ignored, and wasn't noticed by them. They really didn't show that wedge between them. and I don't like the silent hill phenomenon theory. I think that silent hill itself should be in a way its own entity that draws people that are tormented and lost souls. This is bringing up the old games but with silent hill 2 James was drawn to silent hill, because he had a letter from his wife that died years ago. Throughout his journey we only see the monsters and demons that he created. They represented his internal conflict. Also when we met the other characters in the game, Angela and Eddie, they were going through their own journey and facing their own demons as well. In a way silent hill manifests a personal hell for each person's personal conflict. Same with silent hill 1, the world and monsters were created by Cheryl. With this new silent hill game Maya and Anita in a way created this world. Like I said silent hill should be an entity that gives off an unknown energy that draws the tourmented and the lost, placing them in their own creative hell, based on their sins, struggles, and conflicts. That's just my opinion.

    Not to get shitty, but I really think if this didn't have the name "Silent Hill" in the title, you'd have ripped it to shreds. This was virtually no different than equally trite, tone-deaf indie games about suicide and """mental health""" and it didn't even come close to differentiating itself enough to be a "Silent Hill" game or even passable.
