Their song Tush is a lot of fun. Legs and Sharp Dressed Man are ‘80s MTV staples. Their music videos are a lot of fun as well. They are always mysterious figures helping an underdog.

The drummer is Frank Beard who, oddly enough is the only one without a massive beard. The lead guitarist/singer is Billy Gibbons. He plays super thin strings with very heavy picks. How he doesn't break more strings I'll never know. The bassist is Dusty Hill. He also sings lead on a few songs, but his bass is super tight. These guys came from Houston Texas and formed in 1969.
I know that videos can be a hassle sometimes, but some of theirs are must watch even if you choose to do so on your own time.
It's hard to choose a favorite song, so I'll give you two.
"I've gotsta get paid" (link below)
    th-cam.com/video/kaIZWjItReI/w-d-xo.html
And "Waitin' For the Bus - Jesus Just Left Chicago" There's no video for this one, but I'll link the audio from 1973 below.
    th-cam.com/video/0BLof0G2sSw/w-d-xo.html
I've always liked "That little ole band from Texas." Their musicianship is top notch and I happen to love and play blues guitar. Billy Gibbons is one of my heroes. I got to see them live in Birmingham, AL in 99 with Lynyrd Skynyrd and it was a fantastic show.
Sorry for the long comment. I hope you continue to enjoy these guys and I suspect you will. Have a great evening, and Merry Christmas sir.

They talk about this in the documentary. They all used to sneak out as teens and drive up to see the old blues masters playing in small clubs.
Then when they got together to play, they had a lot of the same primary influences. They just cranked up the distortion and created a more electric version on a fairly traditional blues style.

Billy Gibbons is the lead (and only) guitar player as there was only 1 guitar, a Bass player, and the Drummer. They were what is called a power trio. Back in 68, they toured Europe with "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" after Jimi heard them in a small club in some small Texas town. Jimi fell in love with Gibbons Blues style, and the two shared a "Bro-mance" after that. Billy Gibbons is about 74 yrs old now, and though he's slowed down a little bit, he can still kick out some nasty Blues .
    Thanks Friend

I am from Houston which is their hometown and I am old so I first heard this when it came out in the early '70's. It is an ode to the blues and specifically the style of John Lee Hooker. He even deepens the tone of his voice to match Hooker's sound...how, how, how. LOL The drummer is Frank Beard. The lyrics are about a famous "chicken ranch" (brothel) outside of La Grange which had just been closed down about the time of this song. Their name is also a tribute to the blues that is taken from greats Z Z Hill and B B King (King is the top). I hope this all helps answer some questions. Thanks for playing them as they bring me home again.

Back in the late 60's early 70's when I was a child, all my friends and people that I met had personal record collections. Everybody would hit you with their favorites when they could. I remember where I was when I hear this song for the first time. We were at this kids house who was a friend of a friend. He was into the beatles but I wasn't. Then he pop out Tres Hombres, and cued up La Grange. The moment I heard it, I knew the chords were lifted from Spirit in the Sky, a song that was a top 10 hit back in the early 60's. I forgave ZZ Top though cause they took it someplace else. Everytime I listen to La Grange, so do my neighbors.

Guitarist/Singer Billy Gibbons describes an apartment where he once lived, the walls of which were covered with concert posters and flyers. Among the advertised artists were Z.Z. Hill and B.B. King. For a moment Gibbons toyed with the idea that Z.Z. King or B.B. Hill could be fun band names, but in the end it became ZZ Top.

I was about 15 when I first heard Tush off the Fandango Album - their 4th. I then saw them in concert at the Capitol Centre in Landover MD very shortly after on the Fandango tour - so 1976. My girlfriend and her friend stood in line for tickets (no internet then :-) for about 6 hours but got us something like row 16 center. In fact they had to move our seats to the right to make room for the recording equipment as they filmed that show. The opening band was supposed to be Elvin Bishop but they had their equipment stolen so Styx opened for them - my first time seeing Styx. One of the greatest concerts I ever saw. Two of my all time favorite bands.
ZZ Top actually had livestock on the stage. I remember a Razorback, a bull and a Condor Bird. It was crazy. Set was like a barn - was meant to be. When they did Backdoor Medley the place lost it.
Really anything off Fandango or Tres Hombres is over the top awesome. They have other good songs and albums but they went a bit commercial later. Not blaming them. Have to pay the bills. And they did it with style and still great musicians - Billy Gibbons may be one of the most underrated blues and rock guitarists there is. But not my favorite ZZ Top stuff.

the rather fun story of this title is that it is in French, "La Grange", "the barn" in English and when it was released here (in Belgium) I heard it for the first time in a club, and the club was called "La grange" it was just a small dance hall with lights, a few stagecoach wheels on the walls and a whole cart hanging from the ceiling to make it look like the wild west, too funny!

JAY! that is the coolest, it's so good to see people react to music that moves them! been listening to ZZ top for a long time, but the genre really does not matter!! I listen to any and all music, ( and I'm O.A.F.) if it moves me, it's good! Awesome

I was 20-21 years old, in the Army at Ft. Bliss Texas, in El Paso Texas. 1973 or 1974. We would have a small radio and set it on our tank, and when we were in the motor pool if La Grange played, it was drop all tools and sham.

When this song came out I was in the womb. You see, my parents were the coolest on the block. Everyone else was listening to the Beatles, and other bubble gum crap like that but my dad being a bass player, my mother a singer, and all 4 of my brothers being bass players, my parents wanted a guitar player in the family. So, every song that was played during conception through to term, and even during labor had the most awesome guitar licks.

My dad was listening to this on every road trip we made when I was a little kid 🙂I'd just randomly pick from his cassette tapes and play B.B. King, Clapton, Creedence, Led Zeppelin... Oh man, I didn't realise at the time how cool it was to share those moments with him

Band name came from combination of blues man. Z.Z. Hill and Top brand rolling papers. The first time I heard ZZ Top, I was around 12 years old and exploring all types of music back in 1982.

I heard Billy Gibbons (lead vocals and guitar) refer to their music as "barbeque blues". That's about a perfect description! 🙂

  • @jeslookin2168
    @jeslookin2168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Gibbons particularly noticed B.B. King and Z. Z. Hill and thought of combining the two into "ZZ King", but considered it too similar to the original name. He then figured that "king is going at the top" which brought him to "ZZ Top."

The name ZZ Top, according to band member Billy Gibbons, came from a tribute to B.B. King. The band originally were going to call themselves “Z.Z. King” in King's honor, but then decided it was too similar to B.B. King. Because B.B. King was at the “top” of the blues world, they changed it to ZZ Top.

The "beard" story, if I recall correctly, they had taken some time off (an extended amount of time). When they got together Billy and Dusty beards had grown out. They liked it...the rest is musical history!
