@@mikelucey5035: "La Grange" is, along with being a rock and roll song, considered part of the genre known as "boogie"... and as such, it has the upbeat tempo that tends to make me push down on the gas pedal when I drive. Another "prelude to a speeding ticket" is Golden Earring's "Radar Love."

This was first recorded 50 years ago and it’s just as amazing today... I wonder how many songs of today will endure that milestone of 50 and still sound fresh...
All Southern Rock will live on in infamy because it's that good. LYNYRD SKYNYRD must be put on the same pedestal. Both are ROCK GODS!

Billy Gibbons is one of the coolest people to walk the planet. His playing is as sharp as his style and wit, I'd love to have a few beers with him or any of the three, really. One of the consummate American bands, imo

Almost had the chance to hang with him in Dallas...a relationship break up messed up my chances. Not my relationship...the relationship with a millionaire of someone in our family. Was so close!!! Oh, well...shit happens.
ZZ Top has such a powerful, and incredibly unique sound

I got to see them in concert a few years ago. This is the last song they played, and since the song doesn't really have an ending they just rocked out for like more 7 minutes after the song was over.

In 1967 when he was 17 years of age Billy Gibbons (lead Guitarist and vocalist of ZZ Top) met Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and Jimi and Billy Jamed. Apparently Jimi Told Billy he was the greatest Guitarist he had ever seen. Jimi was Billy's Idol. Two years later in 1969 This track appears on the soundtrack to a little film called Easy Rider!!!!

As a guitar player myself with 30 years this is one of the hardiest grooves to get into and make it sound right but when you do ots magic

I just drove past LaGrange last week on my way to the mountain bike park at Rocky Hill Ranch!! Great song! ZZTop has other great songs: Cheap Sunglasses, Tush, Sharp Dressed Man. So many.

Something to remember is that all that came from just 3 guys playing their hearts out.
This one is at the top of my ZZ Top playlist love it! I really prefer their older stuff from Fandango, Tres Hombres & albums like that. Try "Waitin for the Bus/Jesus done left Chicago", "Cheap Sunglasses", "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", "Tush" , " My head is in Mississippi" so many great songs to choose from! Thanks for doing this...

Their latest album 'La Futura' is easily one of, if not, their best because it's straight back to basics.
@@seasickviking - It was a welcome return (IMO). I didn't mind their experimenting, but the Eliminator album was definitely a dust collector in my rack. When I first heard "Gotsa Get Paid" on the radio, everyone on my job-site looked out the window as I said "Holy-Shit... They're back!" ;-)
It was the same feeling of waiting through Tom Petty's Traveling Wilburrys detour and eventually hearing "HoneyBee"... Yeah baby!
@@_Common_Logic_ That's something we can both agree on.The Mescalero album was equally good--'Me So Stupid'& 'Punk Ass Boyfriend' being personal favorites--It was 'Threshold Of A Breakdown' that won the album for me. 'Gotsta Get Paid' was good, but I was slightly disappointed that it was a cover song. Far superior to the original, mind you, but a cover nonetheless.
Cool, doesn't have an expiration date. These guys formed their "Power Trio" right of High school in 1968! from Texas, they started out like most bands, playing in small bars and dance halls, until the great Jimi Hendrix, discovered them while on tour in Texas in 1969. Hendrix loved them, and asked them to be his warm up act on his upcoming tour of Europe. Billy Gibbon's and Hendrix (Both guitar players) hit it off and the deal was done. A couple years later after Jimi's untimely death, ZZ Topp released their first album, that started their rise to worldwide fame, that still exists today. These guys are in their early 70s, but still perform today, although not in 50,000 seat stadiums like in the 1970s. Everyone I know loves the raw and gritty Texas sound of Billy Gibbons nasty guitar riffs. And there are so many more ZZ Topp hits to play.

The Top wasn't formed until '69 and they didn't form out of high school. Billy Left and was in the band "Moving Sidewalks". That's who opened for Jimi in '68. Dusty was already playing with Frank Beard and brought him out to meet Billy (as they tell the story).
Apparently the Moving Sidewalks bass player was drafted into the military, and the drummer wanted to go "do his own thing"... Billy was a man without a band. Frank and Dusty to the rescue and ZZ Top was formed.
ZZ's first album was also released 4 months after Hendrix died... Where are you getting this info from? ;-)

Old school ZZ is the best! No three piece band sounds geeeeeazier or crunchier than old ZZ. Great choice! A classic.

Refers to the "chicken ranch" in La Grange Texas (house of ill repute). A rite of passage for many young men up until it was shut down in 1973 or so.

Loved watching your reaction to the song. There have been several suggestions about additional ZZ Top songs, so I won't rehash what's already been said. Could you please do me a favor? As a Texan, you're killing me with your pronunciation of LaGrange. It's a long A sound as in range, not a soft A as in orange. You are very respectful and polite, so I know you'll want to say LaGrange correctly moving forward. Loved your video, your facial expressions made it perfect. Ive been listening to a lot of ZZ Top during the "shelter in place", and they been a great way to enjoy the solitude. Check out their documentary on Netflix, its kind of amazing how they got started and how they've lasted for 50 years. Thanks for your post!!!

Saw ZZ Top on tour in 1975. They were touring their Tres Hombres album. Knocked the house down and out. Simply fantastic. The opening act was some unknown band named KISS. ZZ Top kicked their a$$

BTW, there's an amazing documentary on ZZ Top, "That Little Ol' Band From Texas". It also has a bit about this, and a hilarious comment about how Billy produced these vocals. ;-)

I was the same way when I started playing guitar. I didn’t care about solos at all. Then later on, I really started to love them. I learned a pentatonic scale first, which is what most of this song is.

What surprises me, until I really listened to it, was that it’s played on a Strat.

Listen to all their 70s stuff, you won't regret it.
As a guitarist, the most interesting bit is the solo with triplets. Its all minor pentatonic but its sweet.

Hey...Jimi Hendrix had his manager give out two of his rings. Huge honor! One went to Billy Gobbons. The other went to Tommy Bolin. Tommy mixed together hard rock, jazz, funk, reggae, blues into his own thing. He died young. His epic song is warning. Do a first time listen to Post Toastie. You will be glad you did. The solos will astound you.
The Layla sessions, by Derek and the Dominos for some beautiful guitars. Its Eric Clapton and Duane Almann. I guess for a reaction song from that album would be Layla. One day post how good you're getting, let us hear it.
I think Billy Gibbons was one of the first ones to do pinched harmonics, and later Eddie Van Halen and others started using them.
Many of ZZTOPs songs are derivatives of the ‘blues shuffle in c’. Rumour has it that the band has marathon jams of this shuffle that last hours.
If you haven't by now, listen to ZZTop's "Just Got Paid", that is the most amazing guitar solo in my opinion! I have to blast it every time I hear it.

ZZTop have been kicking ass for 50 years by not doing anything real fancy. Just great blues influenced rock.
You might want to check out Brownsville Station, another three member American Band. Songs like Kings of the Party and Smoking in the Boys Room.
Slade is also an interesting band from England.
When Jimi Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the best guitar player in the world, he said , "Man, I don't know. You'd have to ask Billy Gibbons that question". Billy traveled with Jimi in his early days.

There's a nice documentary on Netflix that's recent on ZZ Top. It's pretty good and it shows them playing most of their songs live recorded just for the documentary.
