Why Melbourne Lost on Purpose

    Fascinating but forgotten is the Melbourne Demons Tanking scandal of 2009. This one might fall flat but I reckon it's pretty damn interesting. No team in the AFL has come from a flatter couple of years than Melbourne, and the cause is fascinating.
    Unfortunately I won't be making a part three to the Hawthorn videos because frankly they trended pretty bad. But anyway, thanks for watching and I'll see you soon.

Was rough, Essendon copped it as much tbf after drugs and finals drought which is funny. But oh boy was it rough from prep - yr 5 being a dees boy. North are in all sorts at the moment, hopefully once Clarko is back everything gets better similar to Melbourne with Roos. As a Dees fan, it's tough looking back on this disgraceful part of our history. Like many footy controversies, the suits like Cameron Schwab escaped the repercussions of their actions for years whilst the MFC football department rotted, player development stagnated, and on field performance was horrible. Absolute mismanagement from the top (much like the Essendon Drug Scandal/Carlton in general) which serviced only their financial goals, and not the on-field performance. As is typically the case, it is not the players or the coaching staff (most of them anyway) that are at fault (though in this case there's been clear collusion), but the suits; and for their actions fans and players suffered for years.
    The moral you can get from stories like this is that when looking for fault in a club's poor performance (on- and off-field), always look to the top to see why decisions are being made the way they are, and who is making those decisions.

    How about a video about Carlton tanking to get Kruezer when they left Fev on the bench at 3/4 time when he had 6 goals, he also unnecessarily missed games through surgery on a broken finger. Or how about when Collingwood tanked to get a priority pick to get Daisy Thomas and Pendles and left Buckley at full forward when he hadn’t played there. Heaps of clubs did it, not just Melbourne but Melbourne was the only one fined. Tony Liberatore even said Carlton tanked and he was an assistant coach there at the time.

    As a Demons man of more than 30 years, I can say you basically nailed most of it.
    That said, I think more attention could have been paid to the ‘Hollywood Boulevarde’ clique of retired players and hangers on who had an outsourced influence on the joint between 2008 and 2013. There was a reason why Chris Connolly was incredulously given a job as head of football almost as a consolation prize after losing out to Bails on the head coaching position. It was because of the culture of cronyism and insularity that Peter Jackson identified as soon as he was appointed and, as uncomfortable as this is to say, that Jimmy helped to enable.

  • @leeparker9457

    Said it before and ill say it again: No team loses on purpose.
    Yes, it was to their benefit BUT to say that playing people "out of position" was evidence of deliberately tanking is a joke.
    If North Melbourne played Aiden Corr at FF, Nick Larkey in the ruck & bring in Jacob Edwards to sit at CHB for the last 6 weeks of 2023 are they tanking or are they experimenting to see what their players are capable of?

    • @dansharp2860
      @dansharp2860 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's more like Essendon trying short ass Zach Merrett in the ruck. He's clearly going to be hopeless at it and he can't tap to himself. It's so obviously a losing strategy that that can only be its purpose. Melbourne's selections were obviously to loose as they served no other purpose than morbid curiosity of what if you played an entire team out of position.

    • @leeparker9457
      @leeparker9457 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dansharp2860 disagree entirely.
      They stank playing guys in the "correct" position and then the one game they spin the magnets they only lost because of a massive goal after the siren.
      If that goal doesn't go through then Dean Bailey would be called 'innovative' or 'genius' for pulling those moves off.
      Melbourne weren't rucking a tiny mid. They used a mobile forward, much the same as Carlton do with Silvagni. Richmond won a flag with Shaun Grigg as their back up ruck so it's hardly tanking to try someone out of the ordinary.
      The North example is accurate.
      We already know they are terrible in 2023. If they spent the last few weeks playing people in different roles and then they end up with pick 1 we wouldn't say they were tanking.
      We would say that Ratten/Clarkson are "innovating" or "experimenting with their list".

      @@leeparker9457 Was it the final game of the year when Frawley held N.Riewolt goalless to 3/4 time with Melbourne in front? Then at the start of the 4th Frawley was forward and a 1st gamer was put on Nick and he kicked 6?

    In that 2011 game at Kardinia Park, tanking was obvious. Geelong was tanking and could have easily have won by more than 186 points

    Gary Lyon should be ashamed of himself for not helping this club during this period

    I feel like they should have been punished more. However their tanking gave the tigers dusty and I never would have thought I’d see a tigers flag in my lifetime let alone 3. Large part thanks to Dusty and Melbourne’s tanking
