So many minor details that you state such as oil temp reader corrosion and a rusty bolt as a sign of repair that really makes this guide stand out from the rest. phenomenal.

Imran, believe you already know this, F8X M cars have solid mounted rear subframes (no rubber bushes) whereas, E9X M cars have rubber bushing mounted rear subframes. Cheers from a very rainy Southern California at the moment!
Yes, this is one reason the F8x do not age quite as badly because on our high mileage E92 M3 project it was the subframe bushes that made the biggest difference’
I may need to bring my car to Aston to have a look at my steering also, feels exaclty like you explained this m4 at the front, ever since kerbed at like 1mph in the snow steering felt funny bit of play on front left, I took bmw for main dealer service, they said nothing wrong with it and said maybe book in for alignment, I did the alignment on a hunter alignment and I can still feel play on front left since alignment, although alignment gave a bit more confidence in cornering.
The lack of steering feel is because the thrust arm bushings. You can’t see any damage on them, but they will get soft. They last 50-60k miles. New oem or power flex and it will be sharp again
You are actually wrong, when my F82 was new it lacked steering feel due to the electric steering set up is why and you can adjust stiffness with touch of a button.
18 plate pre lci? What the lol. As for the delay between production and registered date. Then no doubt it hsd issues after production and quality control quarantined it. It was then most likely in wip (work in process) for ages until the fix or replacement was carried out.
Quite possible, but also in the U.K. it’s not uncommon for a car like this to be ordered then cancelled, meaning the dealer has to find a new buyer, which can lead to it sitting around for a while.
My motor blew at 49k miles. Got a new motor hopefully this one will last. Me personally I would not buy and high performance sports car with over 100k and I wouldn’t buy any M car with over 50k.
The front one is most likely a result of blow by, where the oil is coming from we need to investigate. The second one that is leaking around the core is the turbo itself. We’ll be investigating where it’s coming from in a future video.
would be interesting to change the front tyres and test drive it again. Just to indicate how much feel there is in budget tyre or premium. Would also interesting to do a deep clean on the leather steering wheel. Its soo shiny, it looks awefull alsmost plastic like.. Cheers to the camera man on his new wheels!
I'd take my mechanic who will have the car up on axles stands for a good look, if the buyer refuses - walk away! probably best to ask in advance if they are okay with that though.
Good to see a high miles car being assessed and worked on. I would like to see a detailed maintenance series on "how to bring your high miles M3/4 back to rude health" series. Try to make to apply to other models in the series too if you can, like the F3x, as much is shared between them and you'll get a wider audience hopefully. I'm mainly asking as I have a F36 440i GC and BMW has never made a M4 GC. Perhaps highlight parts that can be swapped from the M version to the more regular versions, similar to the LCA swap from the 1M to the 130/135i back in the days. Do the M4 LCA fit the 440i? The LSD? The suspension?
@@EvolveAutomotive yes but the whole point of mileage stoppers is that it stops the mileage at the source interrupting it from going to the multiple locations its stored... u brits are the ones who sell/use them the most... I met so many bmw owners that run them and return these cars to dealers so it is a very wide spread issue I kind of hate that they exist in the first place.
Great video! Looks like a nice clean car considering the high mileage. Nice to see another F8X project, since I have an F87. I'd love to see you go through the front and rear suspension bushings, changing seals on the differential, servicing the differential and transmission, then onto the engine. Find out where the oil is going, replace the turbos and since it won't cost me anything, go for some engine upgrades. ;) Regarding the lack of feel in the steering, let us know it feels after you replace the front tires. I will be very surprised if a proper set of front tires doesn't make a huge difference.
Hi Matt and all colleagues, A great video with in-depth detail which will benefit anybody wishing to purchase a high mileage M4 F82. I would really like to see the installation of your new turbos, what type of product or will you be using your in-house product. As for tuning, it would be great to see a see a dyno test base results after the new turbo installation as a measure, followed by a single or double equal length mid pipe and a back box installation, followed by another dyno test to compare the bhp/ whp power gain. Thanks again for such a detailed video. Bilal Abdallah
Unless you want a dedicated M car, it’s better to go with the b58 for cheaper, and with more tuning potential, and don’t have to worry about the crank cub as much
Change those front tires . The sidewall must be very thin and it probably feels like driving a higher profile one. Even halfway worn quality ones can make steering not feel direct , and with low feedback.
From a scan tool point of view, if a garage or private seller refuses to let the car be scanned, but everything else is adding up nicely, would it be enough to walk away from? How good would Carly be as an alternative to Ista too? Nice car btw, hope it proves to bring smiles per miles...
I'm going to be doing the same thing in the US this year. It's going to be a sometimes track car, overall fun street toy. Is there any reason to spend the extra money on the Competition or CS? Do they come with any upgrades that are impossible to cover by the aftermarket? Great video, thank!
If modifying the car there’s no real reason to get a Competition (unless you really like the seats with holes in) The CS has a few more changes and if not wanting to modify (or not modify heavily) would probably be the best base other than value.
Looking forward to this. Mine only has 6k miles so will be interesting to see what effects milage has on the cars. I like that hoodie is it available to buy? 👀
Later cars have better spec such as wireless CarPlay etc, very late Euro M4s will have an OPF in the exhaust. We have seen/heard of more 2017 onwards cars suffering from crank hub slip but wouldn’t want to say categorically that earlier cars wouldn’t suffer from it too. Some people prefer the LCI lights and how they look. In the U.K. a 2018 onwards car will be cheaper road tax once they reach 5 years old (like this one)
-Pre LCI tail lights on an my18?? -Wing covers would be nice when leaning over cars.. -Front undertrays missing -Some undertray screws missing -Exhaust nuts aren’t factory.
I have f82 and a thing I learnt with mine was high oil consumption with no obvious sign of leak but otherwise mine seems fine and hard diagnose on a test drive
@@EvolveAutomotive about a litre every 600 to 700 miles. Possibly a bit too smokey but isn’t blueish. Someone said likely to be burning past the turbos but the car seems fine all in all other aspects but really should get to the bottom of it fully
Is it really necessary to replace turbos at this point? If boost is ok, no smoke and no excessive oil consumption.. that small leak doesnt seem to be big issue...
Typically the leaking means they’re on their way to failure. A well running car shouldn’t need an oil top up between servicing, so it’s something we need to investigate. We also wouldn’t tune a car where the turbos are leaking, for safety.
What was the reason for preference of a non-competition spec? I’m assuming it was a budget based decision. I’m torn between comp or non-comp, so any thoughts are valued.
Non-comp in this case was purely budget. Looking at them when you can afford both - If not modifying the car go for a Competition, but if planning to modify ECU software and wheels/suspension then it doesn’t make much difference.
@@EvolveAutomotive thanks for sharing, really appreciate the tips and honesty. I’ll soon be joining the F series M division…once I’m able to decide between the F80 M3 or M4 F82 - choices choices choices!
Yeah after making this comment I noticed G8X coming in with them on. Some parts only come with the label if supplied as a replacement part rather than from the factory.
What turbo's would you guys recommend for replacement. I have a higher mileage F82, and most likely will upgrade the turbo's at some point next year. I know there are a lot of options , but other than oem , for a slight power bump and lasting longevity , I wondered what would be a good choice.
If looking for more power the Mosselmans are an excellent choice for reliability, drivability and power. We’re also going to be investigating a more OEM or perhaps OEM+ fix for those not wanting to for 6-700hp
Matt, I would black out the chrome kidney grills, that's a must, a front splitter also makes a huge improvement for the appearance in my opinion :) congrats on the buy!!
@@EvolveAutomotive would one of bimmercode or bimmerlink do the job? I've got a BT obd2 reader and a licence for one of the apps (forget which now lol)
Being a 2016 car that was registered in 2018 means thats its got the pre facelift rear lights, also does that mean that it has the higher road tax because its 2018, in sure the 66 and below had a lower road tax
Yes and headlights. Now interestingly, the ‘luxury car tax’ is higher for the first 5 years, then defaults to a flat rate of currently £180 a year. So for Matt who didn’t pay the inflated first 5 years it’s now cheaper than an earlier cars.
@EvolveAutomotive I've never owned a f series... but a friend of mine owns an e92 m3 and im sure his is over £600 maybe closer to £700. Am i right in thinking that being a turbo charged 6 cylinder its classed as more "efficient" hence the lower tax?
Considering the car already had a pair of PS5 on the rear, they’ll do just fine for U.K. wet winter daily driving. Would the PS4S be better for performance driving? Absolutely, it’s what we run on all the Evolve project cars.
@@EvolveAutomotive I don't doubt they won't be good for UK wet winter driving, I just think the car should be put on tyres that warrant better feedback by design rather than just being a "good" tyre for the road.

Lower and upper control arms is a must and maybe bushes, then turbo oil leaks
Hi...How much did the engine fix cost ?
@@maximusEaglethe new engine cost was $39k installed
The leaky turbo could also just be blowby from the pcv right?
The front one is most likely a result of blow by, where the oil is coming from we need to investigate.
The second one that is leaking around the core is the turbo itself. We’ll be investigating where it’s coming from in a future video.
What the total cost to replace all of that?
would be interesting to change the front tyres and test drive it again. Just to indicate how much feel there is in budget tyre or premium. Would also interesting to do a deep clean on the leather steering wheel. Its soo shiny, it looks awefull alsmost plastic like.. Cheers to the camera man on his new wheels!
Welcome to ZA and wish you a good one in our mother city😊😊😊
What’s the bit of software that can spot mileage blockers?
I thought a 2018 car will have the LCI front and rear Lights, great content guys
Later in the video we explain why this is
I'd take my mechanic who will have the car up on axles stands for a good look, if the buyer refuses - walk away! probably best to ask in advance if they are okay with that though.
So you can check a car to see if the mileage has been tampered with?. I would love to know how or watch A video on it.
There’s a variety of plug in diagnostic tools that can do it. The mileage is stored in multiple ECUs so it looks for discrepancies
@@M5tubee if you know where to look you can still see 👀
Great video!
This is great atuff! Would be awesome if you did the dame with a 535i
Hi Matt and all colleagues,
A great video with in-depth detail which will benefit anybody wishing to purchase a high mileage M4 F82.

Unless you want a dedicated M car, it’s better to go with the b58 for cheaper, and with more tuning potential, and don’t have to worry about the crank cub as much
b58 vehicle needs like $15-20k in chassis upgrades to drive like an m car. And it won’t look as good no matter what
Gentleman want a real M car that can make 600whp + without spending $20k on chassis upgrades and a transmission.
Sounds like a bag of spanners lol. JUST KIDDING 😂Congratulations on the purchase 👏
I'm going to be doing the same thing in the US this year. It's going to be a sometimes track car, overall fun street toy. Is there any reason to spend the extra money on the Competition or CS? Do they come with any upgrades that are impossible to cover by the aftermarket? Great video, thank!
If modifying the car there’s no real reason to get a Competition (unless you really like the seats with holes in)
The CS has a few more changes and if not wanting to modify (or not modify heavily) would probably be the best base other than value.
5:58 What's that equipment?
Looking forward to this. Mine only has 6k miles so will be interesting to see what effects milage has on the cars. I like that hoodie is it available to buy? 👀
We have merch on our website - www.evolveautomotive.co.uk/collections/accessories
Very informative video, thank you...but wtf is wth ads, it's just too much bro, I had to literally skip around 20min of video to avoid this
Get an F80 M3! Fix all the rattles and noises. That would be cool to get a full breakdown on how to fix all the rattles in the interior for cheap
Would you buy a high mileage BMW m car ? N Great video you covered a lot and being very honest about everything. keep the videos coming 👏🏽👍🏽🤜🏽🥂
Awesome video again. Maybe I missed it, but any specific build years or avoid?
Later cars have better spec such as wireless CarPlay etc, very late Euro M4s will have an OPF in the exhaust.
We have seen/heard of more 2017 onwards cars suffering from crank hub slip but wouldn’t want to say categorically that earlier cars wouldn’t suffer from it too.
Some people prefer the LCI lights and how they look.
In the U.K. a 2018 onwards car will be cheaper road tax once they reach 5 years old (like this one)
Cool, thanks! Will keep my eyes open for them, I do love the design of the F80’s!
With the looseness eg the steering, suspension etc, can these be corrected?
-Pre LCI tail lights on an my18??
-Wing covers would be nice when leaning over cars..
-Front undertrays missing
-Some undertray screws missing
-Exhaust nuts aren’t factory.
We explain this near the end of the video 😉
The thermostat is aluminium, it’s doesn’t corrode, its oxidisation. 😊
I have f82 and a thing I learnt with mine was high oil consumption with no obvious sign of leak but otherwise mine seems fine and hard diagnose on a test drive
How often is it using a litre? If there’s no obvious sign it’s usually burning it
@@EvolveAutomotive about a litre every 600 to 700 miles. Possibly a bit too smokey but isn’t blueish. Someone said likely to be burning past the turbos but the car seems fine all in all other aspects but really should get to the bottom of it fully
First guess would be turbos leaking internally, as that’s quite a lot of oil to be burning!
I suspect so - I live closer to Mr Vanos than you guys, so probably need to bite the bullet with it. Thanks for advice and top content!
Definitely worth bringing it to us or Mr VANOS for a diagnostics session
BMW springs do have labels from factory.
Yeah after making this comment I noticed G8X coming in with them on. Some parts only come with the label if supplied as a replacement part rather than from the factory.
does the charge cooler coolant tank and the main engine coolant tank use the same fluid?
Same fluid yes, but two separate systems and reservoirs.
Great video mate
Matt, I would black out the chrome kidney grills, that's a must, a front splitter also makes a huge improvement for the appearance in my opinion :) congrats on the buy!!
The chrome is staying on this one!
@@EvolveAutomotive Chrome FTW!!
Some nice bbs x spoke wheels
So what are you going to do in order to fix the unresponsive front end from Imran's test drive?
All of this is to come in future videos in the series
Yes
Lucky old Matt going to get the best service and parts at v reasonable prices?😁
Will this be for sale once you guys are done with it?
It's Matt's personal car, but anything is for sale for the right price.
how much would a pristine 37k miles ‘18 m3 comp go for now?
Yes.... s55 pls
ALSO PPI ESPECIALLY WITH BMWS!!! Turbo job can easily be 7k!
Roughly how much would this service cost
How do you check for mileage blockers outside of visual wear?
There’s a few diagnostic apps etc that are fairly cheap that can show it, or bring it for a pre-purchase inspection to a specialist like us.
@@EvolveAutomotive would one of bimmercode or bimmerlink do the job? I've got a BT obd2 reader and a licence for one of the apps (forget which now lol)
Great video 👏
Yes the F8x car is a lower tax band than the E9x M3
Road tax for my 2015 M3 is around £370.
Good video ,, well detailed
Confusing for the front end to not feel good with different tires in all corners half of them from n.korea.
Should I buy cheese and onion or ready salted crisps?
Cheese and onion
@@EvolveAutomotive correct!
Front end might feel loose due to the tires.
It’s always a possibility with cheap tyres, but having changed them to Michelin PS5 it feels largely the same.
@@EvolveAutomotive That's because PS5 is a normal midrange tyre. Put it on proper tyres. PS5s are for 430i's not M4s...
Considering the car already had a pair of PS5 on the rear, they’ll do just fine for U.K. wet winter daily driving.
Would the PS4S be better for performance driving? Absolutely, it’s what we run on all the Evolve project cars.
@@EvolveAutomotive I don't doubt they won't be good for UK wet winter driving, I just think the car should be put on tyres that warrant better feedback by design rather than just being a "good" tyre for the road.
seen a 2017 with 232k miles. Made me feel less bad about potentially buying a 82k mile one for $16k. I think thats a steal personally.
What year is the m4?? I don’t recall you mentioning it, looks b4 the facelift tho
2016 build date
