  • Traditionally, the foundation of every Harari child's upbringing is Islam. Historically, children in Harar have been required to attend "Quran Gey", or, "Harari Quran Classes" from the ages of 3 or 4 until 10-12 when they are expected to graduate.
While this institution is a celebrated part of Harari culture, does it do more harm than good?
Is exposing a child to religion at such an early age fair to the child?
Do Harari children have a true free choice to believe in Islam and develop into practising Muslims?

It might be better for them to be isolated in Harar steeped in religious teachings. You'd never know a brutal civil war and a hostile ruling party takeover just ensued and are still playing themselves out. Or that the current economic crisis is completely due to EPRDF mismanagement and corruption, which is not likely to change under the 'Prosperity Party.' Or the likelihood that the Prosperity Party will be merely swapping one authoritarian for another. A once great empire reduced to one of world's poorest and most corrupt countries. But still better than the Derg. I'd stick my head in the sand and focus on religion too, especially if I wasn't Oromian.
