How Bad is it? 28k Miles with No Paint Protection C8 Corvette!

  • Hello all. So its time to check out how the paint looks on the C8 Corvette after 28,000 Miles. I never installed Paint Protection Film, or PPF for short, and its time to see how many paint chips the C8 has collected and check out how effective two different paint chip repair kits can be at covering these up. Its a lot of good information and a good how a good paint chip repair kit can save your car from costly repaint work if you never installed PPF. Enjoy!

      Thanks for the feedback 👍. Yeah one would think its due to traveling close to a car in front but I generally dont minus the car rallies where we ride in tight formations. The TX roads where I live are notorious for having just alot of debris that gets kicked up. And you run into situations where a person comes into your lane right in front and something gets kicked up from it. Ive had two windshield chips from such a thing happening in the past with one requiring a full windshieldd replacement. It happens 🤷‍♂️.

      @@NuHorizonC8 But why? You just spent less than $100 on Dr. ColorChip and got a 98% clear bumper / hood. A full PPF front end package costs $2,400 on a C8. And you're still going to see most of those chips on the film. And you won't be able to get them off without removing the film and replacing it. Worse case you can spend a fraction of that $2.400 on a professional paint correction every so often. What am I missing?

    Given the fact the C8 is so low to the ground everything the traffic in front kicks up hits the C8’s front end and hood.
    When I received my C8 in mid April it sat in the garage for two weeks waiting for my scheduled XPEL PPF appointment to have the entire front end and rockers wrapped. I had my C7 wrapped in 2015 and in 6 years before I sold it I put 33,000 roadtrip miles on it and the front-end took hundreds of hits some were fairly big rocks, ZERO paint damage.

    • @NuHorizonC8
      @NuHorizonC8  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that info! Yeah its definitely crazy how many hits you can rack up over the miles. It never really occurred to me when I first purchased this car brand new and really wanted to showcase the car at different show events and such. And was a big learned lesson to not skimp out on that option.

    Great video!
    Lesson learned on the PPF. I got mine on before I even drove anywhere other than home from dealer. The self healing of XPEL is amazing. I even scratched the film with a rock stuck in my microfiber towel. In about 5 minutes the deep scratch on the film healed and disappeared.

    • @NuHorizonC8
      @NuHorizonC8  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Brett! Yeah not having PPF is one of my biggest regrets of not getting when I first got my C8. Spending the money back then could have saved me thousands to get it done now which would need a full repaint then PPF applied.

    • @mocheen4837
      @mocheen4837 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish that I would have added ppf to the hood as well. I only put it on the front bumper, a pillars and rocker panels. The hood is starting to pick up chips.

    • @NuHorizonC8
      @NuHorizonC8  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mocheen4837 yeah the hood area will get some especially for how low the car sits. You may want to check out the Dr Colorchip for yours. It may help fill some of those kind of chips pretty well in the meantime. 👍

    It really surprises me of the differences over the years. My ‘94 didn’t have that many problems over 168k. My ‘15 after 500 miles was driving me crazy so I had the chips touched up and the PPF applied. I plan on picking up my ‘23 and driving it directly to the PPF shop to have it done and ceramic coated.

    • @NuHorizonC8
      @NuHorizonC8  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is interesting to see the difference in how paints endure depending on the manufacturer and year of a car. In hindsight, I definitely wished i had gotten PPF for the C8 when I first took delivery. Glad I could help others avoid my mistakes! 😅

    • @77canesman
      @77canesman ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a C8 on order and reached a different conclusion from this video. If I can repair paint chips to 90-95% with Dr. Colorchip, why would I pay thousands to get PPF? It may protect the underlying paint, but chips will mar the film almost as badly and you can't fix the film without removing and redoing it.

  • @joem7755
    @joem7755 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    nice run down and agree about he AC Delco. I used it for the wifes car and yeah the raised spots pissed me off. That other ones looks great. There is no way I would pay 7-10K for PPF but maybe for the bumper, hood, lights I would. I have been thinking about the self PPF install kits. xpel had one for the front for 400 bucks and I have seen others. You should try one and see how much of a pain it is. The cost many of these shops charge is crazy.

    nice comparison video. the touch up paint for dealerships aren't the greatest. if you have a local paint store, they could possibily make you a small bottle of touch up. the drcolorchip solution is great all in one package though. now time to put some STEK PPF on it!

    • @NuHorizonC8
      @NuHorizonC8  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback! Its interesting I had never considered a dealership for touch up paint jobs actually unless their go to is something like AC Delco which i wouldnt go for that case. The Dr Colorchip really did a phenomenal job for what it was. That being said yup PPF is on the list to get done for sure. 🙏👍

  • @markw9512
    @markw9512 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I had a 2020 stingray for three years with no PPF and I had zero paint chips on the front. Why? Because I’m very disciplined about not getting too close to cars in front of me, and stay off the highway with it. But it, like my new Z06, was meant for a weekender, not a daily driver. So in certain circumstances, doing a PPF on the front end still could be beneficial, although it does show scars from stone impacts so it is not panacea.

    Hey there - I also tried using ACDelco paint but it doesn't look so good, it has already hardened. How were you able to remove it? I had PPF on my front fascia but it became damaged in a minor bump while parking on the nose tip, so I'll need to get it redone.

    • @NuHorizonC8
      @NuHorizonC8  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey thanks for the comment. So the quick answer is that it involved light sanding to then redo. Once it cures that essentially the only way you can go

    Stop following so close to other vehicles on the highway you will reduce the risk of so many rock chips.

      Hey top appreciate the suggestion. I do generally keep a wide reach from other vehicles specifically because of that but sometimes its unavoidable especially when others merge right in front and dont give you a choice 🤷‍♂️. It doesnt help either that texas roads tend to have quite a bit of junk on the roads in general. Just in this last week ive had to avoid broken peices of wood, spilled paint cans, random car pieces, and even a mattress 😅. Its a jungle out there sometimes.

      Thanks for the feedback plainview. I agree it does make a difference giving an extra bit of space, which I do tend to give where possible when driving. Bad Texas roads with alot of debris and such dont help thats for sure 😅. That being said, its surprising what kind of paint imperfections you will see when your looking at a 2ft distance away. Not all the paint chips were full on through the paint but were noticable imperfections that could be repaired via a paint chip repair kit or protected via PPF which is the point of the video. Thanks again for the feedback and support.
