Should also remind people, if they plan on working on the brakes - especially removal of the calipers --- to disconnect the battery 1st - as the car could go into a auto-brake check at any time and possible hurt / injury them - especially if they have there fingers in / amoung the pads when the car does an auto pressure test , etc.

Your thumbnail stating "never have Brake /Dust Again" is what caught my eye. To me the only "Never have Brake Dust again is with the Carbon Ceramic Brake setup. I'd like to see a comparison in order to become a believer if that's possible. Thanks in advance Mike. Save the Wave 🙋‍♂

These will be really good to eliminate brake dust, but maybe not as good as ceramic pads and rotors. He’s already put 100 miles on them though and you can’t see any dust on the wheels.

  • @garys5138

Guys - I did this on my 2005 Z51 in 2011 and I seem to recall that the Helms Corvette service manual said with factory rotors to make index marks relative to orientation on the hub anytime rotors are removed. Obviously that would apply to replacing pads without replacing rotors, but the service manual also said maximum runout at an 8” radius must not exceed 0.002”. If the service manual still says to make index marks on rotor orientation, that made me wonder if the factory uses an on-the-car brake lathe as a final cut on OEM rotors during assembly at Bowling Green. Maybe I was overthinking this, but I had a hell of a time getting all four rotors oriented at 0.002” or less runout with both the new Centric cross drilled and slotted rotors and/or the old rotors. I had about 30,000 miles on the dusty semi metallic Z51 pads and rotors, so I spent several hours cleaning the rust and debris from mating surfaces on the hubs to get my runout at or below 0.002” with the new rotors. Rotate a rotor just one lug bolt in orientation, and the runout changed dramatically. Well, perhaps “dramatically” is a stretch, but at 186 mph I began to worry about why the engineers were that fussy limiting runout to 0.002”. Maybe someone else has run into this wide variation in runout when re-orienting a rotor just a few degrees relative to the hub? The ceramic pads indeed got rid of the brake dust on my C6. I am not looking forward to doing this again at 81 years old with my new 2024 C8.

My C7 ZR1 generates virtually no brake dust which I attribute in large part to the carbon ceramic rotors and OEM brake pads. In fact I can swipe a finger across one after driving and there's no dust on my finger tip. Whereas on my dad's C6 ZR1 there is since it has steel rotors.

Yep, mine were glued on [2100 miles]. Managed to cut the piston boot trying to separate the piston and pad. Luckily piston boots are simple to swap out. But when the piston falls out, if you didn't pull the battery cable, then you're screwed. You get air in that corner. Can't bleed it with battery cable connected. On the positive side, now I know how to pressure bleed C8 brakes.

Hopefully Darren has better luck with R1 Concepts rotors than I have. My experience with those on a different car is that they warp too easily. I would not recommend them for anything beyond normal street driving, and especially not for track driving.
If I were you, I would have chosen Powerstop rotors if they're an option for the c8, because I have used their blank rotors with the Powerstop Track Day pads on my current car (not a Corvette), and those rotors held up AMAZINGLY well with the performance of those pads.
Otherwise, thank you for showing how this is done. I thought the rear calipers having removable pins vs the front calipers not having removable ones was unexpected.

Just change the pads. The pads only create the dust not the rotors. Drilled and slotted rotors are just for show. If tracking drilled rotors will get hair line cracks from the hard abuse and heat. Slotted rotors stay cooler than solid rotors on track. These guys need to put back on their gold chains.

I dont know how big of an issue is to deal with the break dust in order to replace disks and pads because I own a regular stingray which I drive every day and i may track 2 or 3 times and the regular stingray set up is perfect for that, but you need a Z51 if you are a hardcore track person, and it’s not your daily, the z51 comes with bigger breaks and rotors and stickies tires to grip better at 150+ mph but only last about 7000 mi are very expensive and can’t be used on wet or cold days and are barely streets legal and on top of that you have to deal with excessive dust I really don’t see the need for a Z51 if you’re going to track it once in a while, you regular stingray brakes will last about 3-4 track days while the Z51 will last about 7-8 track days and there’s also the issue with the different oil brake and the oil hoses that need to be replaced if you plan to track a non Z51 more than 3-4 times

Um, nice job but... You put the rotors on the wrong sides. The vanes in the center of the rotors should be curved to the back of the car at the top twelve noon position. This is so, as the wheel on the passenger front rotates clockwise it pulls air from the hub area and flings it out towards the rim. Yours are pointed forward on the top as seen on the video at the 12:15 time in the video. Feel free to send pics to who ever you got the rotors from to confirm. Sorry to be the barer of bad news but you really need to redo the job and fix this ASAP. Probably should put a comment on the video so others know what to look for too.
Edit: Just did the 4 wheel kit on my 23 Z51 C8. Stock has drivers side rotors both sides. New kit has the same. Very disappointed in Chevrolet and the aftermarket right now... 🙁

It’s my understanding that you should disconnect the battery prior to removing calipers. Apparently if the key fob is accidentally activated just right, the computer wakes up and applies brake pressure through the electronic brake system. Obvious disaster if this happens.
