What recipe would you recommend to someone who doesn't like Spam? And should I do more of these quirky recipes with other ingredients?

The best Spam recipe is a Hawaiian one making a Spam fried rice & it has pineapple in it. It’s on the Spam website, though I brown the Spam (diced like pork in traditional fried rice, not big chunks) a bit more & brown the rice more as well, I up the amount of onions, replace the peas with large shreds or matchsticks of carrot & baby corn & finish it w/a bit of toasted sesame oil. Spam has always been nasty, but it used to be better (more hammier) than it is now. The trick with frying just plain Spam is thin slices.

Since texture is a sticking point I recommend crisping it up and putting it with something else like that musubi, fried rice, or soups. If you're ever back in the US, the SPAM museum is about an hour and a half from the MSP airport (Minnesota).

Its always funny to me when people get weirded or skeeved out by Spam... but then those same people will eat a hot dog or bologna, lol. Spam is pretty much like canned ham and has around 6 ingredients, meat and seasonings. If its a texture thing, I kinda get it but again... hot dogs or bologna, haha.
Cheers, glad you liked the masubi.

To easier make the "sushi spam" (also known as spam musubi) you can take the spam tin, line it with cling film and use that to pack the rice in, lay the spam on top, then pack it down and pull it out using the cling film. Make sure to cut the spam crosswise instead of top to bottom so it has the oval shape/rounded corners. The rice takes the shape of the spam and the spam tin and makes less of a mess on your countertop. You use the spam to push down the rice in the tin and form the shape as well as have something to wrap it up in for a bento or lunch box. You can even place it in the refrigerator until you eat to help it firm up more and to keep it firm.

Budae jjigae is a really good meal with spam and could be a video in itself since it's an east meets west kinds of dish. It was made in South Korea in '50s after the Korean War when many were given American rations including things like pork & beans, ham, hot dogs, spam, American processed sliced cheese and other western related food. The dish literally translates as to "Army base stew" and used those items as well as traditional Korean ones to make a hearty spicy Korean stew. Can't recommend it enough.

An underrated ingredient for sure, especially as a pantry item that lasts for years, is fully cooked and (if you're in a situation where you must) ready to eat as-is, and can be used to make actually delicious things with a little bit of know-how.

Fun fact: Although debated as to where Spam Sushi was created, Musubi (what we call Spam Sushi) both are an American dish created after WW2. Musubi specifically, which Barry made a version of, was created in Hawaii during WW2 as another way to use all that Spam. I like Spam lightly fried in butter and that's the only way I've ever had it. I don't know how I'd like Spam Musubi.

When you open a can of spam, either remove both ends, or at least pierce a hole in the end you don't remove. When you're removing the spam from then can, this lets air in behind the product (I hesitate to call it 'meat'), and you don't form a vacuum behind it keeping it in the can.

Just a tip for cleaning rice. I find rice grains are smsll enough to go through colanders so instead, i have these sieves made from a type of cheese cloth like material. I place this under the water and add a bowl below to gauge when the water starts to clear up. I then run it under the water emptying bowl at time to be sure i csn see change from murky to clean and then i tip my cheesecloth sieve upside down to get it all out.

I think something a lot of people seem to not understand is spawn isn't like old school hot dogs or American Bologna where you never know what might be in there, its 6 ingredients, the main being pork shoulder and ham meat. Its meant to be cooked and once cooled you can make it taste so good with just a few extra bits and bobs. It also isn't seasoned, except with to much salt, cooking it can cook out some of the salt, and add some other spices because there is none in there.

The correct way to get the SPAM outta the can is: Remove the lid, squeeze the two short ends of the can towards the middle until the can "cracks" (basically it deforms a little and stays like that), turn the can over and give it a quick shake and VOILA! SPAM without a can!

For the sushi I would have fried the spam to get the crispy ends, then put the rice on top of that with the sauce you made, and then wrap it. So you get to keep the nice crispy texture of the spam but still get the sauce in the rice.

As a general rule, light soy sauce is more salty and used as a seasoning while cooking and dark soy is less salty and used in marinades and dips.

@1:48 It's 2023, so the 80's were basically 40-35(!) years ago not 20...I know it's absolutely terrifying for a lot of us, myself included, but alas it's true.
Now I'm going to be depressed for the rest of the day (maybe week) thinking about how old I'm getting and just how much of my life, especially what is generally consider by most to be the best, is basically already over...LOL, I got even more depressed and died a bit more inside just writing that last sentence...
Never would've guessed in a million years I would ever end up feeling like this after watching one of Barry's videos, as they're usually so pleasant and so chock-full of positive energy that I simply can't help but feel happy and leave with a big smile on my face! (Though it was through no fault on Barry, just me getting triggered by the time thing)
Now if you'll excuse me, but I have to go and daydream about all the wonderful things on my bucket list that I will probably never get around to doing!
