On Friday the UK, US and the EU announced plans to impose personal sanctions on the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, and his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, in response to the Russian assault on Ukraine

When I first saw this, I thought the sudden turn followed by speaking in Russian was really strange, but then I spoke to my Russian friends and they said that it was so nice to hear from a world leader that they aren't being lumped together with Putin, so I think well done Boris on that one.

I’m Russian and I’ve been crying all these days about this whole situation, so the fact people understand it’s not our fault is such a relieve. We as citizens are now so scared that sanctions will completely isolate us. As a brit I love the Russian people. The UK and Russia share so many centuries of history together. This is not the will of the Russian people, and it's certainly not the will of those poor Russian and Ukrainian families who will never see their brave loved ones again. I don't know how much this means to Ukraine, but in the 90s Croatia was going through the same thing with no support, embargo on weapons, against a much more powerful enemy and we won against all odds. I have no doubts Ukraine will win too, actually with each day I believe even more.

I understand it might look funny for some but for me as a Russian speaker, it sounds really decent & powerful. Though the idea of addressing in another language was doomed to be a joke, he literally made the impossible and dodged this, at least for the ppl he addressed.

Most of our people have been trying to say something but the government keeps arresting the protestors. there was supposed to be an agreed demonstration in the city I'm from but the police still came and started threatening people to leave

I don't really vote Tory, but I can't fault Boris' response, he's been pretty strong through this whole crisis and I think voiced the public mood quite well. Whatever my other criticisms of him, he has conducted himself with great dignity in this matter and has my respect for that.
He's not going far enough because his party has lots of financial ties to wealthy Russian oligarchs who put Putin in power and keep him there. Look up Evgeny Lebedev and you'll see Boris' true colours.
