    Big Tractor Power heads out to a North East Iowa field with a 170 pto horse power International 3788 2+2 tractor and AGCO WHITE 8516 CFS 16 row planter planting soybeans. This is a stand out and unique planting combination mixing a classic tractor and modern day bulk fill planter. The International 2+2 tractor was introduced in 1979 offering a front forward engine design and rear articulated cab. The International 2+2 has been nick named the Anteater in North America and the Snoopy in Europe because of the nose it has where the engine is mounted. The international 3788 2+2 was built in Rock Island, IL at the IH Formal tractor plant from 1980-1981. Just over 2,400 3788 tractors were built. The AGCO WHITE 8516 CFS planter being pulled by the IH 3788 tractor is planting soybeans. AGCO offered the 8516 from 2003-2013 and it can plant corn, soybeans, milo, popcorn, sugar beats and winter wheat.

    Aussie farmer here. We call them Snoopy's. I've never operated one, but a guy down the road had one and was still using it as his primary tractor till he sold up 10 years ago. I missed out on buying it at his sale. Damn.

    I have a 6588...the newer version of the 3588. It doesn't get a huge amount of use but I bought it simply because I wanted one. I do use it on the manure spreader in the winter and it'll go through snow like crazy. In the spring as long as you keep your speed up, it practically floats over mud. Someday I hope to restore it to like new condition even though it's pretty nice as it is.

    The first time i saw one of these was early 80's in North Dakota when i moved to Wisconsin i worked for a farmer that had one and i knifed in liquid manure with it. I always thought they looked ugly now i am happy to see one working. Thank you BTP.

    Very fun tractor to drive. Great weight balance. With duals you did have to watch that your front tires didn't hit the rear tires when making sharp turns as I learned from experience

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes duals on the front were frowned on by IH until the 7288/7488 came out.

    Good video👍 hard to believe in the long history of Internationals this is one of only two tractors, large all-wheel drives, that they built themselves. The 4100 series 4156/4166, and this one. All the others were built by Steiger. They use the case 9400 series when they first emerged. Since then it's been Case International Steiger.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2+2 was really a mfwd type of tractor than a 4wd. In 1979 most row crop tractors were 2wd. By 1984 many were fwa and the fwa design became standard by the 90’s and the 2+2 faded away. Case IH had experimental 2+2 designs with the 7140 and MX270 but the projects never made it into production.

    Just found this video. you just don't see these 2+2s much any more. The popularity of the Front assist I think is why Case didn't continue the 2+2 line, but wouldn't a 71 series Magnum version have been an awesome tractor. With the newer cab, Cummins engine, and higher capacity Hydraulics.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @perrypavlat6909
      @perrypavlat6909 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There are steel blocks that can be mounted in the pivot area to limit how much the tractor can pivot so the tires don't hit each other. I only have duals on the rear axle on mine. I was told the front differential isn't strong enough for duals

    @dahlmasen3084 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    That tractor looks awesome👌🏻 What does 2+2 mean?

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      2+2 was a marketing term that indicated it was a 2wd row crop tractor in the back placing the cab behind the articulation joint for easy view of row crop 3pt mounted implements. Plus is was a 4wd driven tractor up front. These were sold at a time when most 180 hp tractors were just 2wd and a fwa axle was quite uncommon.

    12gpm hydraulic pump?
    How is it running a center fill planter

    • @perrypavlat6909
      @perrypavlat6909 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It looked like there was a PTO driven pump on the planter. Yes the small hydraulic capacity was a major shortcoming on the IH tractors of this era. There was an upgrade to a 16 gpm pump available but this didn't help much.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure. It has to have some enhancement as modem day planters require a tremendous amount of hydraulic capacity. Even late 1990’s and early 2000’s models struggle with modern planters.

    Bigtractorpower, in Australia they use 60 foot combine heads. Why are we not using those size heads for harvesting here in the USA?

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I would say two reasons. #1 the yield. What is the yield bet acre of wheat in Australia. I want to say I have heard 15 bu. Per acre. So if there is 1,000 acres of wheat here it takes several thousand acres in Australia to match the return. Wheat here in Western Kentucky yields normally around 90 to 100 bu. That would be allot for a 60 ft head. #2 the fields are not flat here and at this time 45ft is about as wide as a flexible header can be right now to cover the terrain.

    We had the 3588 here in Saskatchewan in the early 80s.Worked well but there popularity soon faded.There still a few around these parts but not as nice of shape as the one in the video.

      @bigtractorpower  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Today around $10,000 to $20,000 depending on its condition. Maybe less if it needs allot of repair.
