    I have a 6588. They say you either love or hate 2+2’s, I fell in love the first time behind the wheel. I really feel like if they were built a little bit heavier, they wouldn’t have got the bad reputation they had in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Treat them like the row crop tractors they are meant to be, and they are great pulling, economical machines. Great footage with the cyclo! 2 IH exclusives in one video!

    Been a fan of the 2+2's for a long time. They are really cool old tractors. There's a farm about 30 miles from us that runs a few of them along with some older IH 4WD's like yours. Last time we drove past they had them all lined up in a field back from the road a couple hundred yards.

      Very cool. The 2+2 was a popular tractor where I grew up. I remember them new on the dealer lot. They were popular on dairy farms. A grain farm I grew up by had two 3588’s as their main tractors for 30 years from new until the farms retirement.

      The 2+2 tractors were built 1979 to 1985. The first generation models are the most common with a white cab. The second generation models with red cabs are scarce. The 1985 models called the Super 70s saw less than 30 built before being discontinued in the Case IH merger.

      @@bigtractorpower I can tell. When you was talking about the AFS Connect CaseIH Magnum tractors it is interesting that the 2+2 was actually shorter lengthwise, even though that 2+2 has an articulation joint in front of the cab. It probably would have been a great tractor if CaseIH had chose to keep making it after International Harvester was bought out by Tenneco.

    In 1979 my dad decided we needed another tractor and it was going to be a new 2+2. We had the brochure which I read from end to end. So my dad had 12 year old me call around to IH dealers in southeast Minnesota pricing 3388’s and 3588’s. I don’t remember if the 3788 was out yet. I found I think it was 3 dealers who had them in stock. I got options lists and prices. I remember at least one of the salesman thought I was just a child wasting his time and asked what farm I was calling from? I replied with Walker Dairy Farm of Grand Meadow Mn. He said “well I’ve never heard of that one”. He must have been out of the loop because my dad was fairly well known being on the Minnesota Dairy Promotion Board for many years, giving speeches at Dairy Board meetings and attending $5,000 and $10,000 a plate Republican fundraisers including one that he was just about a foot away from sitting President Gerald Ford behind him over one chair to his left. My dad was often interviewed by farm reporters and farmers often visited for advice.

      IH went bankrupt during the production of them, and when Case acquired IH making Case IH, they didn’t realize that these tractors were beating Deeres hands down in the row crop department like IH found out. They discontinued them as they thought it was a waste of time.

    • @andrewmills9353

      They were also a premium priced tractor that earned a bad rep. Some of the early ones had hydraulic issues, many of them saw front duals added and the injection pump turned way up, and the drivetrains just didn’t take that kind of abuse well. Many of the kinks were worked out with the 6X88 series, if IH could have put the Super 70’s on the market 1 or 2 years earlier, I think the 2+2 design would have lasted several more years in production.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Both of the replies to this post are correct. The Case IH merger brought an end to the 2+2. The Farmall plant closed and Case IH used Case built tractors from Racine, WI in 1985, 1986 and most of 1987. The Magnum was introduced in the summer of 1987 which was mostly an IH design with some Case input. A Magnum 2+2 prototype was built but never went any further.

      I was 8 years old when International Harvester was acquired by Tenneco and merged with Case. The area I grew up in was solidly IH with dairy farms, vegetable and grain farms. In the 1984-1986 time period many smaller farms with older owners retired and sold out. The IH dealer closed shortly after the merger. It did not seem Possible because everyone had red tractors. The rapid changes lead me to get camera and start taking pictures of local tractors because many of favorites I grew up watching dispersed. 25% of my viewers are 25-34 and 18% of my viewers are 35-44. 13% of the viewers are 45-54. A good portion of the viewers saw the decline in the 1980’s or saw the improved economy in the 1990’s. I remember hearing Paul Harvey news reporting about the end of IH. Shortly after Allis-Chalmers went out, WFE sold of its combines, Ford bought New Holland. Steiger and Versatile were acquired. It was a hard, surprising and disappointing time.

      It was the Anteater. I mention the Anteater and Snoopy Nick names in the video. I Remember these tractors brand-new on the lot at my local international dealer and it seemed that everyone called them an anteater.

    They never had them 2+2 in CNY where I grew up. Or at least I’ve never seen a one. The only ones I’ve seen were in pictures or in videos. Weren’t they called ant eaters at one time? Sweet video BTP.

      Anteater is a nick name for a 2+2. I mentioned the Anteater and Snoopy nick names in the video. The 2+2 was a big seller in WNY in the Rochester area on dairy farms. They were good plowing, disking, planting, forage harvesting and manure spreading tractors. Thank you for watching and commenting. .

    Around 1977 I worked on a farm as a teenager and they had what I believe was called a Ford Country 4x4 tractor . Unfortunately I thought it was the ugliest thing on 4 tires .Especially when I had lived on another farm that had a 3010,4020 and a 5020. But my stepfather bought a old what I called the Green Acres farm with one run down Oliver tractor. And he bought a Ford ... sel-lect to matic (?) . I've never loved these International tractors like this one. But a great video otherwise.

      Ford County. Like a pre 4x4 from the time when Ford didn't do 4wd tractors themselves.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The County was a converted Ford with all wheel drive built in the UK. From 1972 to 1976 Ford included COUNTY tractors in their tractor line up in North America. The County sold in the US was about 70 Hp.

      The 2+2 was built to be a fwa type tractor with equal size wheels.

    I never understood why Tenneco halted production of the 2+2 immediately after the Case International merger. It seems like it was a pretty useful design.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When Tenneco took over they did not buy the Farmall plant. They wanted the IH combines and implements. Tenneco used the Case tractor line to fill the Case IH line up from 1985 to 1987. In August 1987 the Case IH Magnum came out which was mostly an IH tractor but was built in Racine. Corporate synergy ended the 2+2.
