When it comes to junk or floor mats getting in the way of a car's operation, IT AMAZES me people's lack of curiosity and problem-solving skills. It also amazes me how many people do not change their oil or keep good tires on their cars.
I have faimly that insist that the dealership says 1 oil change per year and believes it and its still running almost 9 years old now imagine if it were taken care of how much longer it would have been
@@danlevesque5437 It depends how often/far you drive. If you are driving less than 10,000km/year: 1 oil change/year is fine: especially if using synthetic oil (which gives longer maintenance intervals).

After working in healthcare for 40 years, I thought I could no longer be surprised by the ignorance of some people. Watching your videos helps me understand that there is always someone out there who is willing to prove you wrong.
There are lots of truly stupid moments but honestly most of these are brainfarts that anyone could have. And if you’re not mechanically inclined, you might jump right to something being wrong with the car. I definitely had a few of those moments when I was 16-19 and I knew nothing about cars so I try not to judge.

You don’t. There was one engine that just used oil like crazy. Toyota refuses to acknowledge it. But I’ve seen plenty of them come in with no sign of leaks and be 1.5 quarts low 2 weeks after an oil change. Top it off and 2 later something.

I saw a Short recently explaining why mechanics don't like people bringing in their own parts. It made sense to me, but 99% of the comments where along the lines of "Mechanics are scammers, I'll work on my car myself" After seeing these videos, I think I'll take the side of mechanics
"My friend can do it cheaper" well it will cost 3 to 5 times as much when I have to redo it and fix their screw ups. That's why I don't do side work anymore. That and I refuse to install wish list parts.

Whereas for these people the only special tools they have is themselves.
The customers parts are normally wrong and also I'm not going to warrenty the cheapest utter shit they could find. Send those ignorant cheap fools down the road. Occasionally an enthusiast/regular customer will know what they have and rare parts may need to come from overseas etc, fair enough, let them deal with it at their risk etc if that's the only way.

I love this channel. Some of the stupid things people can't figure out themselves, blows my mind. I was a Harley mechanic for 4 years, and can't think of but one "stupid" thing a customer ever said. They accused me of underfilling the oil tank on a softtail model, said they burned themselves. Well, the oil tank on a softtail's oil tank is chromed and sits just under the front of the seat. Drive the bike for a while, and it will have VERY hot oil in it (cycled back from the engine, waiting to go back through). Yeah, I underfilled it MAYBE 1/4 of a quart, but it wasn't even at the ADD line by any means. The oil tank just gets hot, and he wouldn't even listen to that. And we had given him the remainder of the unused oil, he could have easily topped it off but "that's too hard, I don't know how". Ummm, pour a little bit in?

My love for Harley's comes from them being the basis of *most* Chopper bikes here in the U.S. Yes, some people make some nice Chopper style bikes from non-Harleys, but my original intent back in the early 2000's was to work in a dealership and then go to work for a custom Chopper shop. That never panned out, but I still have that love for Harleys.
@@practicalplinking6133 It's been awhile, but I think he brought it back because he "got burnt", a senior tech checked the oil level and mentioned "it was a LITTLE low" (not as a criticism towards me, just an observation) and the customer seized on that and wouldn't let it go. He would NOT accept the explanation that the oil circulates from the tank, through the engine (where it gets hot) and then back to the tank which can then make that chrome tank very hot. He just kept repeating "the oil was low and and I got BURNT !!". Nothing ever came of his complaints
Had that happen yesterday. My tech is the same age and the tires had a year on her. We didn't let her put them on. Those tires will fail and your shop will be liable.

That last clip was instructive. One spark flew into the garbage can and ignited something. Luckily it didn't start a fire, especially since the can is plastic.
Honestly, I think I can almost forgive the rear window defroster one, since I bet it looked like it was closed when you were sitting in the driver seat. If they didn't know the window lock was toggled, they may have tried to roll it up, saw it didn't move, and assumed it was all the way up.

Those curious about telling the age of a tire: There's a DOT number on every tire sold in the US. The last 4 numbers are week and year. If it's 3 numbers, it predates the current system, so currently 23 years old at minimum. If you don't see any numbers, then they will be on the other side of the tire. Passenger tires tend to have a partial DOT on one side with the full DOT on the other.
A 3 number DOT indicates 90s or 80s. 1 is indented and the other comes out, forget which is which. Typically, 7-10 years is the max you want to chance on a tire. Any older than that and you're simply asking for issues.

and if there is no date indicated at all, use the tyre as decoration. my 1974 Ford Taunus has an old Goodyear winter tyre as a spare, with no date behind the DOT. there is not even a DOT, europe used that only later. I assume the tyre is as old as the car. it still holds air though, and isn't as hard or porous as you'd expect. yet I'll never use it at all. :P

I got myself with a floor mat once. We did a full stereo system in an Altima (amp and speakers). After the job was done, the car would just crank and crank and not fire (push to start vehicle). Started checking fuses, checking to see if we unplugged anything, etc. After almost a half hour of frantically trying to figure it out, (customer was there to pick up the car as well) I realized I had put the weathertech floor at back in OVER the gas pedal, putting it to the floor. Apparently the car has a failsafe where it won't let you start the car if you have the pedal all the way down 😂. I was so thankful that's all it was and we all had a laugh.

The rear window down was an actual genuine, excusable human error. The rest... we are doomed! And Ai won't save us because PEOPLE program computers! 😂😂
Yep. And I had a rental car where the rear gate window switch was just at my knee (Toyota Sequoia?). So each road bump the window would get moved down just a hair. And then suddenly it starts to rain and... the rear wiper doesn't want to engage. Took me a good while to find out that there's an interlock and that the window that I had closed just before and still looked closed to me - actually isn't anymore.
I've done the "shifter won't go into park" when I first started driving. It was just something blocking it, but in that moment, I thought something much worse had happened and I didn't know what to do. I was worried about leaving my keys in the car in the street, and the scenario of having to take the car to the shop was already playing through my head. I had my mom look at the car and she saw the shifter was blocked in an instant. I can understand how these people end up in the shop. It boils down to having no idea how anything on your car works and assuming you can't fix anything that goes wrong with it.
I really have to worry about peoples awareness when they don't notice something obvious is blocking something from moving. The candy was too obvious, the brush I could see if it moved after they hit it.
But it didn't move. That's why she brought it to the shop because it wouldn't go into park. How dumb do you have to be to not see the brush blocking it?
It's truly amazing that so many people are completely unable to diagnose the smallest problems. Just a few days ago I went in to work to find a note in the comms book that read "The emergency phone box door is broken". I just replaced the two little screws, that were sitting right there in plain sight on the bottom of the box, back into the lower hinge and it's fixed.
I was a static guard at a crash site, and they put up some temporary traffic lights overnight since it was on a bend. The control box had a momentary switch that wouldn't let it operate unless the box was closed and latched. The mount for the switch was loose so it wouldn't just shift out of the way instead of depressing. They spent at least half an hour trying to get it to work (open, close, open, close, open, slam, etc) and eventually had me come down, gave me a stop-go sign and left for the night, thankfully leaving the lights setup. One screwdriver later and I got to sit in my van all night reading a book while the lights did the work. The site boss came down an hour earlier than he was supposed to, so I didn't have a chance to revert the change and look busy. He admitted he'd just been trying to catch me sleeping on the job, took the list of numberplates of cars that had tried to stop and poke around the wreck, thanked me for fixing the problem, and signed off the full hours on my timesheet before sending me home early. Never ceases to amaze me how many people can't seem to figure out how a screw works. XD
Some of these make me fear for the future of humanity. Does no one actually try to LOOK at what is not working correctly? All these fuzzy socks, hairbrushes, and the like is fucking crazy people can't figure that shit out on their own.

In "another life", I was a copier service technician. I had a customer called and she said "The copier keep asking to add toner". "Well, did you add some?" "No... You think it will fix the issue?". So, when I see someone who can''t figure out that a hairbrush, a candy, a fluffy cover, a carpet or a bowling ball in their vehicle is causing the issue, I remind myself of that "toner lady" and I think: yeah, those people exist... and they reproduce. Thank you for all the laughs. We all just have to be aware that "those people" are on the road. (or operate copiers...)
Putting stuff on or near the controls of a car so that it's possible that these things may block something or somehow interfere is one thing. But when it actually happens … that you don't have enough basic "how does this world works" skills to analyze why a lever/switch or whatever can't be moved, that's another level.
Did you ever hear about the glider passenger who mistook the gaiter around the control stick for a pocket into which they should store their phone? Fortunately the phone wasn't strong enough to stop a determined and panicked pilot from still using the elevator.
Many, many years ago I took my mom’s car to a quick lube chain and they accidentally plugged in where the air conditioning moisture would be allowed to leak out. The 2nd row floor would start getting wet and you could smell the mildew within a day. I don’t know how that person at 2:32 could live with that smell for so long where the water turned brown!

allright, so we got shifters blocked by coin change, keys, hair brushes, candy... what's next, a piece of cake? and who'll think of the children being stuck there? or Madame's micro-dog? shifters need to have a cage over them to prevent people falling into the gap! as for the last clip, shit happens. of course, move the thrash can away, but you can never tell how far a spark can fly, especially when working on a rusty frame or exhaust. the auto shops I worked at always had steel drums, often decapitated 65litre-oil drums, for thrash. if it's paper, or something else soaked in fuel, there can always be fire. in that case, close the lid, or bring the thing outside to let it burn there. or both. first clip: "Hello, this is your local tie rod. Do you have a minute to talk about your belief in Oil?"

Many decades ago I went to an auto electrician to install wiring for the caravan connection, in my truck there’s a rubber grommet to get the wiring loom through to the tow hitch area BUT he drilled a new hole right next to it to fit the wiring loom! From then on I always do my own 12v wiring.

A number of parts were missing and the shop declined repairs. Back in highschool a friend had a car's transmission crap out on him. We got the appropriate manual and it did warn us that this was a professional job. We decided it would be lengthy, but we could do it. Four days later we towed his car with the transmission and a lot of parts in a box to a shop. We promised to never touch one again if they could get it working.
Fridge mechanics has the same simple problems with simple solutions dilemmas. The most common one I see is people not cleaning their fridge condenser at the bottom of their LG or Samsung fridges, which blocks the airflow and and kills the compressor. It’s like driving your car with a plastic bag on the radiator. If you have one of these fridges, once a year you should pull it out and vacuum the dust away. I have examples on my Instagram page of the worst ones.
The other problem (other than those pesky inverter boards) is that the compressors are Chinese garbage. I have a 1948 GE refrigerator in my shop that's been running on the original motor and compressor for 75 years straight. Compressors in modern boxs last 2-5 years even if you take care of them.
Since you mentioned GE refrig. compressors...You must have one of the cast-iron case units, suspended on springs. Those never quit! I believe you, when you say it's still working. The next compressor they used was in a stamped steel case, but must have had the same unit inside, cause those were extremely long-lasting as well. Things went downhill when GE switched to a cheap import that looked like a Tecumseh, but wasn't, and the absolute worst was a Sanyo compressor starting around 1985. Glad I got out of the business when I did. Everything now is extremely complicated, and poor quality-a terrible combination. PS....What is an inverter board doing on a refrig? @@ohger1
I tell you what I see a lot of: motel bar fridges that are built into cabinets with no air flow around them. The companies that fit out motel rooms have no clues. Often the compressor is making some very concerning noises
Yes, but this is much worse. The fridge blockage isnt visible, and happens by itself. These cases you can literally see the shifter is blocked because of something you dropped. Doesnt take any mechanical knowledge of how it works at all, in comparison to the fridge.

Honest question: did we ever have a widespread problem with "vehicle won't shift into Park" or "can't (EDIT: SHIFT) -shit- out of Park" complaints with column shifters, unless it was an actual cable/linkage problem or excessive load on the parking pawl? I don't seen to recall any of those complaints back then...
My sister just had something amusing happen with the tires on her car: A friend was driving it in slick conditions and it slid into a curb and the front passenger tire blew. So she took it in to Big O to figure out how many new tires she'd need. Turns out her tires were installed in 2011 and had gotten to the point of dry rot on some of them and they all needed replacing regardless of whether they could still hold air. And her friend was still trying to ask her what he owed for popping her tire despite her stating their age.
@@Sashazur Indeed. She bought the car used and didn't think to see if it needed new tires so soon after buying it. Thankfully she didn't discover that she needed new tires when they started blowing on the highway, though I think in the future she'll definitely be a little more proactive about making sure her tires are good.

The vast majority of vehicle wrecks are caused by driver error. Imagine a channel named Just Looked Down that only featured cars crashed by distracted drivers...
When I first started driving in 1971 if a shop determined your car to be unsafe they could refuse to release your car until repairs were made. I'm not for going that far but there should be a registry where unsafe vehicles can be reported and if involved in an accident should get extra scrutiny for blame.
you can still call non emergency line and inform them that you work at a shop, and someones vehicle is dangerous to drive, and that they're refusing repairs. they most likely get pulled over the moment they leave the parking lot, then get their car towed to an impound yard where they'll then have to pay tickets, towing, storage, and release fees, as well as having the registration revoked (at least in my county/state)
Modern cars are complicated and owners.cant be their own troubleshooter in all cases. HOWEVER, if you can’t problem-solve to the extent of seeing that the hairbrush is blocking the shift lever (or other similar simple example), you shouldn’t have driving privileges to begin with. 🧑🎄

After spending 30 years in this industry it always AMAZED me the people that didn't want to pay the diagnosis fee after us finding something stupid causing the issue like the car not going into park because of the hair brush. I always said "we fixed the problem didn't we?" What about you guys, did you make them pay?
It would depend on the customer- a regular (and liked) customer might not get charged, but someone off the street might. Or if they had a bunch of other work done at the same time, I'd do it for no charge.

A buddy of mine is fixing up a Subaru Legacy from the 90's, slow and steady process. He takes it on small test drives around the block on tires made in 2001. They are surprisingly still very much OK, a bit stiff, but good enough for the test drive on a road with next to no cars.

I like the motto on the earliest American currency - mind your business. You can't expect the government to take care of you. Making laws for everything common sense will eventually put yourself into jail. Maybe he has a brand new set and tire machine at home...and he just needed an oil check before getting down the road a few miles? If there was a law against that, he'd be put in jail and prosecuted. In the uk, cars have to go through an annual inspection, and starting recently they are not allowed to leave the garage until they have the repairs done to make them pass inspection

"My friend can do it cheaper" well it will cost 3 to 5 times as much when I have to redo it and fix their screw ups. That's why I don't do side work anymore. That and I refuse to install wish list parts.
Remember you only see the failures..... I do most of my own repairs without a problem.

Whereas for these people the only special tools they have is themselves.
The customers parts are normally wrong and also I'm not going to warrenty the cheapest utter shit they could find. Send those ignorant cheap fools down the road. Occasionally an enthusiast/regular customer will know what they have and rare parts may need to come from overseas etc, fair enough, let them deal with it at their risk etc if that's the only way.

Some of the stupid things people can't figure out themselves, blows my mind.
I was a Harley mechanic for 4 years, and can't think of but one "stupid" thing a customer ever said. They accused me of underfilling the oil tank on a softtail model, said they burned themselves. Well, the oil tank on a softtail's oil tank is chromed and sits just under the front of the seat. Drive the bike for a while, and it will have VERY hot oil in it (cycled back from the engine, waiting to go back through). Yeah, I underfilled it MAYBE 1/4 of a quart, but it wasn't even at the ADD line by any means. The oil tank just gets hot, and he wouldn't even listen to that. And we had given him the remainder of the unused oil, he could have easily topped it off but "that's too hard, I don't know how". Ummm, pour a little bit in?

My love for Harley's comes from them being the basis of *most* Chopper bikes here in the U.S. Yes, some people make some nice Chopper style bikes from non-Harleys, but my original intent back in the early 2000's was to work in a dealership and then go to work for a custom Chopper shop. That never panned out, but I still have that love for Harleys.
@@practicalplinking6133 It's been awhile, but I think he brought it back because he "got burnt", a senior tech checked the oil level and mentioned "it was a LITTLE low" (not as a criticism towards me, just an observation) and the customer seized on that and wouldn't let it go. He would NOT accept the explanation that the oil circulates from the tank, through the engine (where it gets hot) and then back to the tank which can then make that chrome tank very hot. He just kept repeating "the oil was low and and I got BURNT !!". Nothing ever came of his complaints

Had that happen yesterday. My tech is the same age and the tires had a year on her. We didn't let her put them on. Those tires will fail and your shop will be liable.

Honestly, I think I can almost forgive the rear window defroster one, since I bet it looked like it was closed when you were sitting in the driver seat. If they didn't know the window lock was toggled, they may have tried to roll it up, saw it didn't move, and assumed it was all the way up.

Those curious about telling the age of a tire: There's a DOT number on every tire sold in the US. The last 4 numbers are week and year. If it's 3 numbers, it predates the current system, so currently 23 years old at minimum. If you don't see any numbers, then they will be on the other side of the tire. Passenger tires tend to have a partial DOT on one side with the full DOT on the other.
A 3 number DOT indicates 90s or 80s. 1 is indented and the other comes out, forget which is which. Typically, 7-10 years is the max you want to chance on a tire. Any older than that and you're simply asking for issues.

my 1974 Ford Taunus has an old Goodyear winter tyre as a spare, with no date behind the DOT. there is not even a DOT, europe used that only later. I assume the tyre is as old as the car. it still holds air though, and isn't as hard or porous as you'd expect. yet I'll never use it at all. :P

I would not put weight and miles on a tire that old. Well, I would for a very few people I'd like to see die, but not on my car.
I got myself with a floor mat once. We did a full stereo system in an Altima (amp and speakers). After the job was done, the car would just crank and crank and not fire (push to start vehicle). Started checking fuses, checking to see if we unplugged anything, etc. After almost a half hour of frantically trying to figure it out, (customer was there to pick up the car as well) I realized I had put the weathertech floor at back in OVER the gas pedal, putting it to the floor. Apparently the car has a failsafe where it won't let you start the car if you have the pedal all the way down 😂. I was so thankful that's all it was and we all had a laugh.

Yep. And I had a rental car where the rear gate window switch was just at my knee (Toyota Sequoia?). So each road bump the window would get moved down just a hair. And then suddenly it starts to rain and... the rear wiper doesn't want to engage. Took me a good while to find out that there's an interlock and that the window that I had closed just before and still looked closed to me - actually isn't anymore.

I've done the "shifter won't go into park" when I first started driving. It was just something blocking it, but in that moment, I thought something much worse had happened and I didn't know what to do. I was worried about leaving my keys in the car in the street, and the scenario of having to take the car to the shop was already playing through my head. I had my mom look at the car and she saw the shifter was blocked in an instant. I can understand how these people end up in the shop. It boils down to having no idea how anything on your car works and assuming you can't fix anything that goes wrong with it.
And we've seen the opposite, thinking you can fix everything, in this very video.
"When all else fails, read the manual". Though reading the instructions before using the machine often prevents otherwise preventable misadventures.
I really have to worry about peoples awareness when they don't notice something obvious is blocking something from moving. The candy was too obvious, the brush I could see if it moved after they hit it.

It's truly amazing that so many people are completely unable to diagnose the smallest problems. Just a few days ago I went in to work to find a note in the comms book that read "The emergency phone box door is broken". I just replaced the two little screws, that were sitting right there in plain sight on the bottom of the box, back into the lower hinge and it's fixed.
I was a static guard at a crash site, and they put up some temporary traffic lights overnight since it was on a bend. The control box had a momentary switch that wouldn't let it operate unless the box was closed and latched. The mount for the switch was loose so it wouldn't just shift out of the way instead of depressing. They spent at least half an hour trying to get it to work (open, close, open, close, open, slam, etc) and eventually had me come down, gave me a stop-go sign and left for the night, thankfully leaving the lights setup. One screwdriver later and I got to sit in my van all night reading a book while the lights did the work. The site boss came down an hour earlier than he was supposed to, so I didn't have a chance to revert the change and look busy. He admitted he'd just been trying to catch me sleeping on the job, took the list of numberplates of cars that had tried to stop and poke around the wreck, thanked me for fixing the problem, and signed off the full hours on my timesheet before sending me home early.
Never ceases to amaze me how many people can't seem to figure out how a screw works. XD
Some of these make me fear for the future of humanity. Does no one actually try to LOOK at what is not working correctly? All these fuzzy socks, hairbrushes, and the like is fucking crazy people can't figure that shit out on their own.

In "another life", I was a copier service technician. I had a customer called and she said "The copier keep asking to add toner". "Well, did you add some?" "No... You think it will fix the issue?". So, when I see someone who can''t figure out that a hairbrush, a candy, a fluffy cover, a carpet or a bowling ball in their vehicle is causing the issue, I remind myself of that "toner lady" and I think: yeah, those people exist... and they reproduce.

Putting stuff on or near the controls of a car so that it's possible that these things may block something or somehow interfere is one thing. But when it actually happens … that you don't have enough basic "how does this world works" skills to analyze why a lever/switch or whatever can't be moved, that's another level.

Many, many years ago I took my mom’s car to a quick lube chain and they accidentally plugged in where the air conditioning moisture would be allowed to leak out. The 2nd row floor would start getting wet and you could smell the mildew within a day. I don’t know how that person at 2:32 could live with that smell for so long where the water turned brown!

as for the last clip, shit happens. of course, move the thrash can away, but you can never tell how far a spark can fly, especially when working on a rusty frame or exhaust. the auto shops I worked at always had steel drums, often decapitated 65litre-oil drums, for thrash. if it's paper, or something else soaked in fuel, there can always be fire. in that case, close the lid, or bring the thing outside to let it burn there.

Many decades ago I went to an auto electrician to install wiring for the caravan connection, in my truck there’s a rubber grommet to get the wiring loom through to the tow hitch area BUT he drilled a new hole right next to it to fit the wiring loom! From then on I always do my own 12v wiring.

Cleanest diff I’ve ever seen.
A number of parts were missing and the shop declined repairs.
Back in highschool a friend had a car's transmission crap out on him. We got the appropriate manual and it did warn us that this was a professional job. We decided it would be lengthy, but we could do it.
Four days later we towed his car with the transmission and a lot of parts in a box to a shop. We promised to never touch one again if they could get it working.
Fridge mechanics has the same simple problems with simple solutions dilemmas. The most common one I see is people not cleaning their fridge condenser at the bottom of their LG or Samsung fridges, which blocks the airflow and and kills the compressor. It’s like driving your car with a plastic bag on the radiator. If you have one of these fridges, once a year you should pull it out and vacuum the dust away. I have examples on my Instagram page of the worst ones.
The other problem (other than those pesky inverter boards) is that the compressors are Chinese garbage. I have a 1948 GE refrigerator in my shop that's been running on the original motor and compressor for 75 years straight. Compressors in modern boxs last 2-5 years even if you take care of them.
Since you mentioned GE refrig. compressors...You must have one of the cast-iron case units, suspended on springs. Those never quit! I believe you, when you say it's still working. The next compressor they used was in a stamped steel case, but must have had the same unit inside, cause those were extremely long-lasting as well. Things went downhill when GE switched to a cheap import that looked like a Tecumseh, but wasn't, and the absolute worst was a Sanyo compressor starting around 1985. Glad I got out of the business when I did. Everything now is extremely complicated, and poor quality-a terrible combination. PS....What is an inverter board doing on a refrig? @@ohger1

Yes, but this is much worse. The fridge blockage isnt visible, and happens by itself. These cases you can literally see the shifter is blocked because of something you dropped. Doesnt take any mechanical knowledge of how it works at all, in comparison to the fridge.
@@PaulG.x I see a fair amount of that as well, fridges with little to no airflow running almost constantly slowly damaging the compressor or other components. A little maintenance goes a long way

Honest question: did we ever have a widespread problem with "vehicle won't shift into Park" or "can't (EDIT: SHIFT) -shit- out of Park" complaints with column shifters, unless it was an actual cable/linkage problem or excessive load on the parking pawl? I don't seen to recall any of those complaints back then...

My sister just had something amusing happen with the tires on her car: A friend was driving it in slick conditions and it slid into a curb and the front passenger tire blew. So she took it in to Big O to figure out how many new tires she'd need. Turns out her tires were installed in 2011 and had gotten to the point of dry rot on some of them and they all needed replacing regardless of whether they could still hold air.
And her friend was still trying to ask her what he owed for popping her tire despite her stating their age.
I think a lot of people have no clue that tires have an expiration date even if they haven’t been used much - or at all.
@@Sashazur Indeed. She bought the car used and didn't think to see if it needed new tires so soon after buying it. Thankfully she didn't discover that she needed new tires when they started blowing on the highway, though I think in the future she'll definitely be a little more proactive about making sure her tires are good.

When I first started driving in 1971 if a shop determined your car to be unsafe they could refuse to release your car until repairs were made. I'm not for going that far but there should be a registry where unsafe vehicles can be reported and if involved in an accident should get extra scrutiny for blame.
you can still call non emergency line and inform them that you work at a shop, and someones vehicle is dangerous to drive, and that they're refusing repairs. they most likely get pulled over the moment they leave the parking lot, then get their car towed to an impound yard where they'll then have to pay tickets, towing, storage, and release fees, as well as having the registration revoked (at least in my county/state)

Modern cars are complicated and owners.cant be their own troubleshooter in all cases. HOWEVER, if you can’t problem-solve to the extent of seeing that the hairbrush is blocking the shift lever (or other similar simple example), you shouldn’t have driving privileges to begin with. 🧑🎄

After spending 30 years in this industry it always AMAZED me the people that didn't want to pay the diagnosis fee after us finding something stupid causing the issue like the car not going into park because of the hair brush. I always said "we fixed the problem didn't we?" What about you guys, did you make them pay?
It would depend on the customer- a regular (and liked) customer might not get charged, but someone off the street might. Or if they had a bunch of other work done at the same time, I'd do it for no charge.

A buddy of mine is fixing up a Subaru Legacy from the 90's, slow and steady process. He takes it on small test drives around the block on tires made in 2001. They are surprisingly still very much OK, a bit stiff, but good enough for the test drive on a road with next to no cars.

It should become a legal requirement to report cars that "refuse repairs and drive away" like the one with the original factory tyre worn beyond use.
I like the motto on the earliest American currency - mind your business. You can't expect the government to take care of you. Making laws for everything common sense will eventually put yourself into jail. Maybe he has a brand new set and tire machine at home...and he just needed an oil check before getting down the road a few miles? If there was a law against that, he'd be put in jail and prosecuted. Once you put laws on everything you have no freedom left. That dystopia.
In the uk, cars have to go through an annual inspection, and starting recently they are not allowed to leave the garage until they have the repairs done to make them pass inspection
