Battlegroup: Kursk, Summer 1943. Wargame AAR

  • Brought to you by the Caesar Award winning gang at Long Shot Wargaming, a 15mm wargaming using the Battlegroup rule set. Men and machine clash in the wheat fields of Kursk. The Red Army attempts to stall the German advance into Kursk. T-34s go head to head with the feared Tiger tank, Panther tank, and more! All minitatures used are by Battlefront Miniatures and Zvezda. The Battlegroup Kursk campaign supplement was used for period appropriate army lists. This game was played on a custom 6'x8' table meant to depict the wide open spaces the were central in the Kursk campaign. Miniature Wargaming at its most savage!

    THIS is a proper battle report thankyou. I so sick of 'reports' that show thousands of dice rolls and audio of people constantly discussing or explaining the rules (almost all WH40K videos). Your version is actually interesting, entertaining and justifies why we play these games in the first place. thankyou and well done.

    • @LongShotWargaming
      @LongShotWargaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      28mm is definitely the best for squad/platoon levels action, but 15mm lends itself nicely to slightly larger combined arms engagements. Give Battlegroup a try! It is scale agnostic to some degree. Thanks for the view!

    Without doubt one of the best quality channels Ive seen for Battlegroup games, albeit just a few at the moment produced from you chaps. Im looking at starting into Battlegroup and working out my purchase of miniatures. I find the Battlefront miniatures better than Plastic soldier company for Infantry at least so these reports where the detail of the force list is clearly shown is tremendous. The table, sound affects and the game play is all just brilliant. As for the game room, outstanding. i love the idea of A1 quick reference guides on the wall, bloody brilliant idea. Hope to see many more Battlegroup games from you chaps.

      @@LongShotWargaming for me some of the best battles were those where German Generals were allowed to exercise their tactical ability. They were masters at Mechanised mobile warfare. After Stalingrad Von Manstein gave the Russians a real lesson in tactics. They over extended. He withdrew tactically to conserve his manpower and equipment, reinforce, reorganise, closer to resupply where the ivans over extended. This culminated in an incredible counterattack that formed the basis for the big battle of Kursk. Speaking of Kursk battles the incredible tenacity of Das Reich in the southern pincer which would have broken the Soviets had Hitler not lost his nerve. Even after the battle Prokorovka 2nd SS Das Reich had the ability and the will to smash through. Rommels battles in the desert as well.

    Beautiful table (and really neat/tidy gaming room!) . Wonderfully presented battle report! Thank you for the 1/2 hour of entertainment! [Tiny, tiny inconsequential quibbles - Ferdinands in the North and Panthers in the South, debatable that the Su85 was there (could easily have been a Su76 or Su122 which would deal punishment too), Russian mortars 82mm]. Really seemed to capture the mayhem of the desperate counterattacks at Kursk. Keep up the great content!

      Thanks for the view and comment. Yes, something about the Kursk terrain was kind of difficult to replicate. I think it was the color. most hobby materials are bright green, that of a lush grass. Appropriate for Normandy maybe. But there is an arid quality to the farm fields around Kursk. Woodland Scenics had some stuff that helped achieve the look.

    A pretty good way to present the battle. I get the impression that you sacrificed some of the events to keep the report going which was not necessarily a bad thing. I rather think the German commander got it wrong though. Every time the German armour moved into the open it was annihilated and he seemed to eschew the idea of cover. I also wonder at the Tigers move down the left side of the tracks when it could have crossed to the right to get a flank shot on the tank destroyer and support its infantry.
    I also wonder at the use of a single scout car. Normally they operated in groups or at least pairs for mutual support. The engagement with the Soviet scout car would have turned out a lot differently as a result. But meh! The Soviets won at Kursk anyway.

    After watching the video, I thought it was really good! I especially love the battlefield. The only complaint that I had, was that the entire time, you were speaking in a monotone voice. If you had more emotion to your narration of the battle, it would be a solid 10/10.

      @Maciejze thanks for the view and comment! Battlegroup has its complexities but is the best representation in most cases. Nice table and super miniatures but, notwithstanding setup concerns, could we know if those are T-34/76s, or /85(43)s...! ah- look like /42s. If not the latter the Pz V and VI should dominate the steppe if properly handled... but the table is too small to allow their range advantages to properly manifest (what is the scale distance corner to corner please?). Anyway, which units are being represented, eg the SS Pz Corps or the wehrmacht..? This is meaningful as the battle groups seem a bit arbitrary. On the setup/scenario, there can be little doubt that the Kursk battle was essentially a set piece breakthru vs a prepared defence not a meeting engagement.. Where is the soviet wire and trenches...? And where are the 76-mm AT guns? Most important, the Kursk battle was decided by contested control of a topographic feature, the ridge that the SS Corps followed towards the state farms. Without terrain features and a huge table, the german armour cannot be represented fairly, or use its range advantages to advance methodically... anyway, enjoyed the vid thanks.
