Conversely, heating things up helps in the appropriate places.....great videos tho, I appreciate your clarity... you’re really good at this
Here's a little tip: It's a good idea to put a little bead of weld on the inside part of where the little arm meets the governor cross shaft while you have it out. It's a pretty common failure point for the arm to break off. And as we all know you have to pull the engine out then pull the crank and cam out to fix it. I've found more than one of those arms in oil pans.

I recently bought a rebuild kit that and your instructions here are both fantastic! Quick question tho - how far in should the PTO bearing be? I can't tell if mine bottomed out or is just stubborn. Measured the bearing face is about 1/4" from the centerline of cam gear.

I like watching your videos I’m trying to learn I have an original family heirloom John Deere 300 garden tractor. I grew up with as a child. My father bought it in 1978 brand new and I thought it was the most amazing piece of equipment I ever saw, I currently on it but the motor needs to be rebuilt for sure. I’m just not sure how to do it or where to get all the stuff I need to do it how do I get help with all of these items doing the work and buying the parts.
I may have lost the instructions that came with my rebuild kit. I have two rings, one with an inner bevel and one with an outer bevel, which is the Compression Ring and the Scraper Ring? I'm also seeing different things online. Should both bevels be facing down or all the lettering be facing up?
Hi There. You install the rings in the 3rd groove, then 2nd, and then top. The third groove is a 3 piece ring. You put the wavy expander in first, and then walk 1 thin rail below it, and 1 thin rail above it. That's groove 3. Groove 2 will be the ring with the outside step. Put that in the second groove so the step part is facing down. Groove 1 will get the ring with the inside bevel. Install that so the bevel is upward. Please email or call us if you have any further questions.

Hi Norm. I have an M12 on a wheel horse 312-8. When I re-assemble the breather, the nut wants to collapse in the center of the cover thus lifting the edges of the cover and compromising the seal. Any tips? The order I re-assembled is gasket-breather plate, reed valve, reed stop, rubber bushing, filter, gasket then cover. Any help would be much appreciated!
Crankcase hose was a late 80's emission rule. It's not necessary nor does it reduce emissions for this engine significantly. You should re route the breather hose down and out of the way and let it vent to atmosphere.
Thanks for the video. I bought my kit from you and have been working to finish the rebuild. I did wonder which piston ring goes on the top of the piston from the two rings that are not oil rings. Also, I needed to know which way they face. Could you answer this question? Thanks!
Sure. Ring with inside bevel is the top ring. Install bevel facing up. 2nd ring is the one with a 90 degree step. install this step facing down. Your Piston Kit should have come with written instructions. If you need another copy please send us an email.

I would add to this video a couple of things. Before doing and valve seat work you must make sure the valve guides are in good shape. If they are worn then anything done to the seats will not be accurate. Also you always lap the valves weather they are new and fresh cut seats or not. I would also suggest some assembly lube on the internal engine parts before reinstalling : cam to tappets, cam gear to crank gear. Some people just use motor oil and that works too, but use something and don't reassemble the parts dry. As for the new head bolts. I don't see a reason for them. They are not torque to yield bolts like a modern car engine uses and unless they somehow got severely rusted the factory bolts have worked in rebuilt engines longer than these guys have been alive. Your choice.

I rebuilt my k301 and it was really tight once complete. I could only turn it with a ratchet. Any idea what could cause that? Once I got it started the governor was not reacting to load changes.
