As so many have said, you are not the "average hiker"; you show extensive hiking experience. I just did a hike from descent at South Kaibab to Tonto West to ascent at Bright Angel--this past Oct.4 at age 74--soon to be 75 on Oct, 18. Came prepared with 3 or 4 Litres of water, 1 Litre of Electrolyte drink (plus extra tablets to make more) 2 apples, 4 oranges, snack set of cheese, ham, apple slices, crackers; plus a salad for afternoon lunch, plus hot coffee/cocoa. I regularly take 20 mile hikes, plus exercised one hour @ 4x/week before the pandemic. I climbed the Filbert Stairs in San Francisco (about 13 minutes/ 1/4 mile) 3 x / wx week to build up quads. I was worried that I was in sufficiently good condition to make such a hike and in the end, I had no problem, no undue stress, or fatigue.

Steven, that is indeed an inspiration to me! Love it how you are defying "age" and going strong in the latter years of your life. Thanks for the personal testimony and detailed explanation of your adventures. Stay strong, healthy and safe!

@@AmericasParks I don't mean to dwell on this, but lots of people wonder if they have the strength/stamina to make such a hike. Or they wonder what kinds of exercises are needed to succeed with such a hike And hear tell, it sounds like a person has to be an uber athlete to even attempt. And I hate to say this, I am hardly "typical" either as I am used to taking 20 mile hikes, and work out in the gym (pre-pandemic) 4 times a week for an hour. And I would describe my health as fair to excellent--no smoking or drinking and low BMI. On a scale of 1 to 100 (uber-athlete) I would put myself at 25--and even that would be a stretch. But such a hike entails not only physical preparation with exercise, but also bringing along proper amounts of food and electrolyte drink, as well as mental attitude. In the end, I had no problem.

Just wanted to let you know that my friends and I did this hike on May 28th and it was THE hardest thing I’ve ever done. But with your guidance and tips from this video, it was an amazing hike! Once and a lifetime type of hike. So thank you for your help and recommendations!

I did close to this hike in March of 2020. We cut across at tip off because we got a late start. Then took Bright Angel back up. For those of you questioning if you can do it, I say try. I have COPD from my Army days and I had to stop multiple times climbing back out. Know your limits. Hike with others if you're high risk. The Grand Canyon isn't fully appreciated until you hike into it.
This was an accurate and entertaining video. I want to go back.

When I was there in 1968 I stayed at a lodge and woke up to hearing the mules. I walked down the Canyon Trail and spent the night by the river. It took me 2 days to walk back up the same trail. I stayed at the Lodge in my room for about a week because I was so sore. At the time they didn't have any food anywhere close to the Lodge

I loved watching this video.....thank you. A year ago next week (Jan. 4, 2019) my son and I did this very hike but stayed at Phantom Ranch for two nights to enjoy the bottom. While we didn't have to deal with the heat, nor the same day uphill, it snowed 8 inches on the South Rim while we were at Phantom Ranch.....so from just below Indian Garden to the top, we were trudging through snow.....I was huffing and puffing and every word that you said through the entire video was true, especially at the end. I was so glad to be done....but the beauty was indescribable. And, THE NEXT DAY, I wanted to do it again......after the soreness got out of my legs. I was 62 and just an average guy....that is why I so enjoyed your hike. Keep it up.

Thank you for sharing and good job with the video. I did that same hike with two adventure buddies about 15 years ago. However, it was during the summer months, not in September and we spent the night at the bottom so we had gear, food, liquids, tents, pads, sleeping bags, etc to carry down and back up. I reminisced on our trip. We were very fit , athletic and experienced hikers and when we reached the top after ascending the Bright Angel trail on the way back out (the following day), we felt like we had been run over by trucks. For those reading these posts, the canyon summer heat will kill you if you are not well hydrated and fit if attempting this hike in the summer. The canyon has claimed lives from heat exhaustion and never attempt this hike as a one day excursion during the summer, even if you are a fit athlete. Always recharge your body and rest overnight at the bottom and leave very early the next day to avoid some of the scorching afternoon sun. The Fall and Spring months are the periods to attempt the challenging and epic hikes of the canyon. Thanks again for sharing your trip at this amazing place.

Great vid and commentary. I hiked North Rim to South Rim and spent the night at Phantom on Aug 2015. A hike I will never forget! You have to be in good shape to hike up and down. I trained by running bleachers at a college stadium but there is no training for elevation gain. As I was getting closer and closer to the top of the South Rim, I was telling myself that I was going to climb 20 yards and stop for like the last mile! It took forever to get to the top! But the experience is priceless! Well done!

We will be going in June, and while not all in the party up for this much hiking or time, confirmed by the video [thank you!], we will venture off the rim and go for what we can!

Mate - my wife and I watched this in prep of our 'turn and burn' on Tuesday and your positive attitude really helped morale on the journey. Watched it again now that we made it and had a great time, somehow, reminiscing on the pain and the struggle! Lots of water and prayer for us making it back up in this heat but an incredible experience. Thanks for making this! Hope you're doing well.

Thanks for the very informative video. This is something I have been wanting to do. Two weeks ago, my wife and I flew from ATL to PHX and drove to the North Rim. We spent the night at the lodge and the next morning on Labor Day, I was at the trailhead at 4am. My wife, being my support team, drove the 200+ miles to the South Rim to meet me at the end. North Kaibab and up Bright Angel trail. My take away is it's more of a mental challenge than physical. 112 degrees at Phantom Ranch but hiked my hike and did fine. Slow climb out but made it at 8 pm. I've subscribed, watched and enjoyed your channel! Thanks for the guidance. I'll truly remember this day!

Really fantastic explanation and funny how your comments matched exactly ours at key points along the hike like Cedar Point, Phantom ranch, and how the bright angle trail messes with you at the start, when you gain all that elevation just to lose it when you go back to the river.

Great job man! I consider this as one of the harderst hikes we have ever done (before kids, 8 years ago). The truth is that if a person is well prepared and responsible it could be done. But we met so many people who weren't prepared, potential candidates for rescue mission. When going down on South Kaibab for a couple hours we were almost at the bottom and we met a lady going opposite direction, searching the water (already having nothing) and saying there should be a campground. We told her there is no campground or water on this hike up but she continued anyway. She probably messed South Kaibab and Bright Angel. Then, I remember quite funny moment where I lost my husband when hiking along the river, searching for a geocache. I ran back and forth and couldn't find him anywhere. Suddenly a coyote ran against me with a huge smile - my first thought was: OMG that bastard ate my husband :) Then came that discouraging part at the bottom. We had more than 100 degrees and I think there was sand floor - very hard to walk on that surface in the killing heat. And the whole Bright Angel in front of us, phew! I also remember that feeling at the end of the day - I was SOOO thirsty and hungry but I just couldn't eat or drink anythink. It would go out. I cannot believe you were able to eat that cheeseburger :) Anyway, this was an awesome reminder, you did great and I am happy you pulled out our memories. Btw. I have to disagree with one thing, you are not an average hiker, Randy;)

I just did Bright Angel rim to river and back in one day. For me, for my abilities, it was a good one. Very satisfying but also challenging. I'm below average lol, and 48 yrs old. Well maybe I'm okay. Took me 10 hours. If I can drop 10lbs I may do this Kaibab trail loop like this. I was born with a club foot, everything was fine except me knee started hurting on way down (I pushed thru) and the last 4 miles up my leg was completely locking up - I do better on way up, but the abundance of vert over 16 miles was a bit much for my physical abilities. Or maybe not. I did it afterall.. and actually was moving a little faster than others that I'm pretty sure didn;t hike to the river. Anyway, I wouldn't recomment hiking to the river to anyone unless you know what you are doing/getting into and are aware of what you are capable of. I do lots of vertical hiking weekly around PHX and this GC rim to river and back hike was harder than I thought it would be.

Okay, I didn;t wait to watch your whole video before I posted my comment. You look like how I about looked at the end. I'm getting feeling this is how most ppl are on the final 4-5 miles. LOL. Kudos to you for doing such a hard hike and doing a great job with the video camera and equipment. It's gotta be hard to pull the camera out when you just want to focus on the hike. Now I want to to this Kiabab loop to the river and up Bright Angel. I'm already starting to forget the torturous climb. Cheers and keep up the great work out there!

I did this hike in August last year with my husband, you were the person that gave me the confidence to do it, as I consider myself average. Your video was so informative and helpful. I was perfectly equiped thanks to you. I remember while doing it I thought "He didn't say that it was so rocky and with stairs" 😂 (I'm french, sorry if I'm not explaining myself correctly). It was the hardest thing... my husband was so helpful too, average man but very strong mentally, pushed me hard....until it became very hard for him too lol! And exactly like you said, on the way up you just want to be done with it. But God, I am so so so grateful today, one year later I still cannot get over it. And of course... when we finished it, we said "never again"... and of course (I'm not sur my husband shares that thought) all I want to do now...... is doing it again. THANK YOU THANK YOU A THOUSAND TIMES. For contributing to one of the best/hardest and most beautiful day of my life !

Hi, another brilliant video which brought back so many magical memories. We was there November 2017 both for our honeymoon ( We got married in Vegas ) plus it was my Wife's Birthday too so a double celebration. We stayed at the Yavapai Lodge South Rim. We was only there a couple of nights as we was on a road trip from the UK. We had a hike down into the Canyon but not as far as we would've liked due to time constraints. We will never forget our first glimpse of the Canyon from the rim what an heavenly sight that stood before us we was speechless. You just can't take in the size and the majesty of the place it's absolutely magical beyond words. Thanks for the good work with the video of your hike. Looking forward to more of your amazing trips. I love this video of this hike in the Grand Canyon - another hike that I would love to do one day and one that is on my bucket list when I visit the US. In the Blue Mountains in Australia we also have a hiking trail that, believe it or not, is called the Grand Canyon Track, which I have yet to do, and it definitely isn’t as long as this one, but I strongly believe that I can do that one and with this one I’m seeing here, I’m confident that I could do this walk as well. It looks so beautiful here and one that I look forward to doing one day. You and your family are an inspiration

Randy, last time I was at the Grand Canyon, I thought about how much I would like to hike down to the Colorado River. I should’ve done it 10 years ago when I was able to do that. So - I’m thrilled that you can take me on this hike in your video. Obviously, my preference would be (as I know you’ve done before), to stay at the campground and make this a two day hike. So I am amazed at your ability to go down and up in the same day. I know you’ve even done that with your daughters and to me is totally mind boggling! I know what you mean about the Phantom Ranch wish I could go there, some of these buildings our National parks mean so much to me too. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO, amd for taking me along, . . . Great down-to-earth (no pun intended!) hiking video. I like your average guy approach as opposed to the uber-fit marathoners. Visited Grand Canyon with my wife and three kids this past summer (6,500 mile RV trip from CT to GC, Arches, and a hundred places in-between). We hiked maybe a mile down Bright Angel trail - my wife sometimes has issues with the heat and her heart rate. I would go back in a heartbeat with my backpacking gear and explore more of the inner canyon. Thanks for the inspiring video.

We just got back from a 24 mile hike in one day also. Started at 4:45 from South Rim Bright Angel Trail down across river back up to the North Kaibab trail. Took us 18 hours. Got back at 11:30 pm. Very tough when the altitude gets that high and the air is that thin. Down in the box at the bottom was the toughest for us. 2 members of our group suffered heat exhaustion. They didn't get back until 6 am. So challenging and tough! I loved it though!! We trained for a year!!
