Since you released this video, the NPS instituted a a daily lottery for selection of the hikers who will be able to hike the section past Scout’s lookout. You can designate a party up to six including yourself. You are notified at approximately 1700 the day of the lottery whether you will be permitted to hike the chain section. You must enter the lottery between midnight and 1500 the day before you desire to hike. The lottery takes place shortly after 1500 and you are emailed whether you were selected or not. Rangers man two checkpoints to register the hikers. One is located on the west rim trail just after you cross the river. You must show the selection email granting you access to the chain section and a picture ID; and another checkpoint at the base of the chain section. When I went up there might have been 30 to 40 hikers on the chain section or at the top. One of the Rangers told me about 25% of people who enter the daily lottery is selected. You have to have an existing NPS account or create a new one before you can enter the lottery. You select from a group of time frames you would need to start the hike. The changes seemed to be effective and well administered.
That is an excellent update. Thanks for taking the time to thoroughly explain that for future viewers. I know some are not pleased with it, but I believe it was a wise decision. Glad it is well managed.
I read this description and the comments below and I thank Whatever Runs the Show that I first came alone out West in 1983, a 43-year-old woman. I took the train to Flagstaff, then a little mountain town, rented a car and drove up to Moab. I hiked out to Delicate Arch in Arches. I had no idea what I was going to see, hear, smell and feel. Each step was a revelation. We, thorugh the internet, have slaughtered exploration and discovery. Just a thought for those of you who watch this video and read these comments. Try once in what is left of your life going to a once wild place without any prior knowledge of what you will see and feel. I say that as a gift. I'd love to see if anyone does that and what comments they then make here.
I hiked Angel's Landing two weeks ago (5/2/2023). A few additions to this comment. We secured our lottery spot about two months in advance. You do not need to wait until the day before, but it cannot be secured the day of your hike. We were never asked to present our permit, but we were told that rangers could stop us at any point on the trail to ask for it. We were back off the ridge line before 11 am and there was a ranger just coming up to start checking permits most likely. I'm glad we did the hike as early as possible because there was easily twice as many people at Scout's Landing when we came back. In addition to good foot wear, I would also recommend keeping both hands free and your pack as small as possible. Also, there are TONS of very friendly ground squirrels around the area. Keep an eye on your food and don't share your snacks. Yes, people have fallen off the peak, but I suspect there have probably been more injuries and heart attacks on the way up, which is no joke. Make sure you are in good shape.
A few years ago when I did this hike, the only times I felt unsafe was when people were being pushy going in the other direction. I'm glad to hear they are taking control of this before more people are hurt. As I watch videos of the narrower sections, I'm surprised how intense the scene looks in video compared to in person. I think the wide angle lens of most GoPro's make it look a lot narrower than it really is.
I wanna salute the guys who carried the chains and posts up the mountain so the hikers would have something to grab onto. Imagine that job. And the installation. Geez. I love the Utah parks but I can’t do this type of trail.
I did this hike as my very first hike ever with a group of 17 strangers a month or 2 ago. It was absolutely incredible. I am petrified of heights & could only make it up the very first section of chains before having a panic attack & having to stop....BUT, I love getting to see people keep going & complete it. I truly hope someday I'll go back & actually complete the full hike to angel's landing...but for now, I can say I made it "90%". Thanks for the great real view videos!!!
This was my first NP hike. Not my first hike but my first NP hike, and I started solo but made friends in both directions that day in 2019. What memories!
Hey Lisa, congratulations on the 90%! Actually, that's the same spot I stopped back in 2011 (my first time on the trail). I thought... there's no way I'm going any further. However, as I made subsequent visits, I became more comfortable. Glad to know you enjoyed Zion NP!
Another option to Angel’s Landing is to continue on up the West Rim Trail. If you are after the views without the thrill it cannot be beat. You end up looking down on the Landing with stunning views. This is what we do when we visit Zion.
That is sound advice, Jon! So many miss this trail just off Scouts with their obsession for AL. Haven't done it, but it comes highly recommended from other subscribers as well! Thanks!
We did West Rim Trail the day before AL. I agree, the views are excellent...and the crowds disappear beyond the landing. The hike to or even beyond Cabin Spring even offers some cliffy excitement ;) Cheers!
I had tried to climb the Angel's Landing but decided to turn back not even at half way. LOL. Had light headache, blurry vision and feeling like I was going to fall at any moment. My life was more important than the hike. LOL
If you’re feeling extra adventurous have someone drop you off at the start of West Rim Trail and hike ~15 miles into Zion. It’s incredible. One of the best backpacking trips I’ve ever done.
My family and I did Angels Landing this past May. I will be honest, I am terribly afraid of heights and I was having anxiety about doing this...up until the last moment of deciding!! I went back and forth deciding if I would go all the way to the top...using the chains. I made my decision right at the chains...and I am SO glad I decided to go!! It was a HUGE challenge for me and I felt amazing accomplishing it. What helped me was to focus on the persons shoes in front of me. I know this sounds odd...LOL...but I literally kept my focus on the strangers shoes and verbally telling myself I can do this. I would also suggest NOT to watch too many videos of other people doing this! It scared me! Final words...if you are afraid of heights, be honest with yourself, but, at the same time, push yourself!

Did this hike a couple years ago and 100% agree with your take. Everyone I have told about it I have said three things. 1) Know your own limits, 2) There are clearly some people who have no business being out there, and 3) go early to avoid the crowds. I saw a number of people who couldn’t do this section under their own power. One was a kid of about 5 years old and the other was a woman who looked to be about 80 years old. The other thing I saw that I thought was questionable was a young fit couple, but they had infants in Baby Bjorns. It looked too heavy and unstable to me. Maybe they felt comfortable, but it made me nervous just watching them.
Written through modestly tear soaked eyes.....Although I have shared many words of gratitude on many, many videos I often feel it impossible to put into words what your videos and modest friendship have meant to me and my family over the years. This video brought me back to one of the first. if not the absolute first video I saw on your channel. It was when you scaled Half Dome with Natalie. Living with a visual disability the reality of doing that or a hike like Angel's Landing is not realistically in the cards for me. I get emotional about that sometimes because I sure want to with all my heart and have found peace with that because your videos, allow me to "be there" in a way that may not be possible. The advances in your cameras and techniques have come so far and give an almost virtual reality feel to them. This was gift. They all have been but this one struck a chord somehow. Hey Randy, great video. My wife and I visited the mighty five in May. We chose not to do angles landing but we did observation point, it was really cool to watch the folks on angles landing. Everyone should visit this part of our beautiful country and see what Gods hand has done.

I love this hike and the entire park. I worked at Zion Park for two summers back in the 70s and climbed AL several times. It didn't have all the chains in those days. We also climbed it at night which was its own thrill. Seeing the canyon from Angels Landing in the glow of the full moon is a whole other experience. The West Rim trail is also a great hike. I agree with Randy, if you're comfortable with the hike then you don't want to miss it. Thanks for the beautiful videos and the memories.

I was at Zion about a week ago. I hiked the Canyon overlook trail, it was awesome. This old timer doesn't have the strength or nerve to do Angels landing. But man it looks spectacular.
Finally accomplished Angel’s Landing today (technically yesterday). This was my second visit to Zion, the first time me and my girlfriend went was in September of 2020 and we were only able to do the Narrows because the chains section of Angel’s Landing was closed during that time due to COVID . Upon hearing that there was going to be a permit system implemented in 2022 me and my girlfriend decided we had to go back and face one of our bucket list hikes. We were completely blown away and facing a hike so intimidating as this was such an accomplishment to us. Your videos have always served as an inspiration to us and we are so grateful for the content you put out. Thank you!

Just got home from Zion Park. Did the Narrows river walk which kept us at ground level up the river canyon. I believe there are basically 3 groups of people 1. Those with little or no fear of heights. Most alpinists and rock climbers in this category. 2. People with a moderate fear of heights but can overcome this fear and complete the challenge of Angels Landing. 3. People with a paralyzing gut wrenching uncontrollable fear of heights causing an almost paralysis of body when encountering heights. I put myself in this 3rd category and cannot even fathom how people can complete this hike. You could offer me a million dollars and I simply would not be able to overcome my fear to even attempt this hike. With all that being said, I certainly enjoyed ( with queasy feeling ) experiencing the Angels Landing trail and views through your amazing video.
I couldn’t imagine taking my child on this hike 😬 We just came back from a trip to Zion. We did the Riverside Walk, Emerald Pools, some of the Grotto & the Patriarchs. My daughter had a blast. We will do this trail when she’s much, much older, adult age & has more experience. Not to mention, better balance! National parks have gotten so much more popular lately and I wish more people would do better research. Great video!

Angels Landing is my favorite hike I have done so far!! I haven’t got as many as you, but I have hiked a lot of cool trails. My son and I did this hike in Dec ‘18 with a lot of snow and ice. Loved it. We had hiking boots, and crampons. Wearing /having the right gear is tge first step to safely and successfully conquering any trail/climb. Love your videos. This video gave me a stomach ache- and I JUST DID THIS HIKE in September! Your video was beautiful, and I enjoyed seeing that sights I couldn't appreciate because I was concentrating on my foot placement. I strongly agree with your comments at the end- we can't let someone else talk us into the hike, and we have to be confident in our own physical abilities (healthy ankles, arm strength, etc.). I've been a mountain hiker all my life and have bagged some worthy peaks. I first attempted Angel's Landing 10 years ago in February but gave up because Walter's Wiggles were slippery ice and the chains were frozen in ice above Scout Camp. Didn't see a soul except one solo mountaineer with crampons and an ice axe who summited and recommended we not go further without mixed ice/snow climbing gear. Three years ago I got to the top in October and conditions were perfect *but* there were over 1,500 people climbing that day. Such a narrow route meant I had to deal with hundreds of people who had no idea what they were doing (flipflops, no water) and put me at risk, mostly because I started mid-afternoon and had to suffer lots of tired people stumbling down the route while I was going up. Angel's Landing is out of control and imagine a quota/reservation is in its future. Till then, try to schedule for a shoulder season instead of summer, be in reasonable shape and prepared with good shoes, a pack with clothes & lotsa water. On a good day, get up @6:00am and be on the first busload to the bus stop so you're ahead of the soon to be stragglers. Don't be a dummy and attempt when the weather report is bad. Best way to play it is get a campground site for a week, explore the short hikes until the weather is good, then go for it. In good weather it's a Class 2 hike with heavy exposure but the chains make it quite safe. I'll never do it again, it's a way too crowded bucket list thing with lots of foreign tourists who are on a schedule and will push you aside to get ahead. I don't like that; no problem on a forest trail but on a 4 foot wide stairstep ridge with 1,000 foot drops on both sides I'd rather not be taking the risk.
This is the same reason I’ve attempted it twice and turned back. It’s too narrow and too many people going in two different directions on such a narrow path.
I attribute your video on the South Kaibab/Bright Angel trail as a contributing factor as to why I did this very hike in 11 hrs a few weeks ago at the age of 58. Your channel is my new rabbit hole.
Hey Randy, just popped over from your older video and realized I had actually watched THIS one before my hike last week and 100% took your advice. You inspired me to get more grippy shoes, know my limitations and not feel pressured to go further than I was prepared to go, physically or mentally and funny enough, it was YOUR voice I heard in my head (without realizing it until just now) reminding me to consider the risks/benefits as I stood on ‘that’ spot of the chain section in your other video. Truly…your advice was critical and spot-on when it came to my safety, enjoyment and success on this hike, so again, thank you very much. *Side note: Although I DO appreciate this update to your previous video, it was very helpful to see you (and Tim) candidly do this hike, demonstrating what it’s really like, step by step. I don't know why you don't have more subs. You have a great voice, and obviously make an effort to be educated about your subjects. I personally will never hike this because I will freeze and not be able to continue at some point, and it would put others in jeopardy. It definitely needs some kind of a permit system.

Randy, what a thrill to relive this hike that I did just a couple of months ago after I retired. It scared the heck out of me, but I used the safety protocols you outlined in your previous videos and everything was just fine. I always maintained three points of contact regardless of how ridiculous I may have looked like, but it gave me a sense of security that helped me to persevere to the top, as this was a challenge for me being afraid of heights. Just found this video. Subscriber for a long time. I fulfilled a lifelong dream on May 4 of this year by doing this hike. I've looked at it most of my life. Finally got to come to Zion. I slipped during the first 100 feet of the chains. . I nearly fell and died. I went back to Scouts Lookout and literally sat there shaking for ten minutes. I told no one back home. But after 20 more minutes I decided I was not going back down or giving up. I started again. And I did it. I still don't know how. It's not being melodramatic.....but it changed my life. I was so scared. And I kept going. It's possibly the prettiest views I've ever seen. But it was so crowded. And I was on the first shuttle at 7am. It looked like ants going up. I hope a permit system can be put in place. It is best for the resource. Randy, keep up the great work!
It is a relatively easy hike. It is one of my favorite short hikes in the United States. The only issue I have with it is become very crowded. The first time you get past the steep switchbacks half way up the trail it can be daunting for some people. Just take your time hold on and let people by if they are faster climbers than you. The second time you climb angels landing it is a cake walk. There are many more hikes in america that are more dangerous than this. It is well worth the hike up. I wish I lived closer by. I would hike this every day to keep in shape.

I have done the Angels Landing hike 11 times over the years, including once in the winter when the trail was 95% snow & ice. I wore microspikes during the winter hike(recommended by park rangers). I saw people wearing just sneakers on the winter hike. They were slipping & sliding all along the trail. One guy actually asked me to catch him if he started to fall(no kidding). I don't think that the trail is overly dangerous, but people put themselves into a dangerous situation by doing things such as standing next to the edge while taking a selfie.
I've been to Zion many times and and have taken most of the park's hikes, but there's no way I'd go out on Angels Landing. No matter how prepared and careful I might be (and I would be), it would mess with my head so much that I'd surely find myself stuck out on the middle of the trail paralyzed with fear. Which would obviously defeat the point of experiencing the stunning scenery! I'm amazed that so many people can take this hike like the proverbial "walk in the park". Thanks for sharing your excellent video so I can enjoy it virtually.
This is the best Angels Landing video I have seen. My only addition is that I would NOT wear a backpack. It can distort your balance at at only 5 miles round trip you can live without water or food. Only take your camera.
Beautifully done video! Did this with my husband a few years ago at age 64. Imo it's not a difficult hike IF you're okay with heights, respect the danger, and know your physical capabilities. Admittedly, hardest part was going down and having to look at the 1500 ft drop 😬 lol.
I want to do this hike so badly (ever since I was a child, I've been so many times to Zion, my grandparents lived in New Harmony, UT for 20+years) but I am terrrrrified. Thank you for sharing the POV of your journey!
Atta Boy Randy !!! When I saw which camera you were using my initial thought was "this perspective could get wonky." Which it did but it captured the experience of the environment better than actually hiking it because when you are actually hiking it a person tends to focus on just where their feet are placed. I have made it to Angel's Landing at least three times. Once I was with my teenage son. He got to that random tree part along the chains. There is a landing of sorts. He said, that he was good with that view and waited for me to go up and come back.

Nicely done Randy. Good advice and beautiful photography. Zion in our favorite park and in fact we are headed there tomorrow. My impression is that the views from the top of Angels Landing are equalled by other locations in the park, so if you have a healthy fear/respect of heights there is no need to go to the end just to count coup. Scout's landing is where we choose to turn around. Too many people on the chained sections. One last word of warning for fellow fearers of heights. It is absolutely scary and once you decide to bail you still have to make it back down, which is at least as terrifying. :-)

Very cool video. I hiked angels landing when about 53 years old. It was Amazing. There are many scary things I would never do but the chains gave me a feeling of security and I was super careful. I would do that hike again at my current age of 60.
My hiking days of this trail are long over. In the 70's I would start this trail, but would always turn around, just to darn scary for me. Thank you for your wonderful photography and your views at the end of the hike!

Just hiked Angels Landing last weekend. It is actually less scary than I thought. I got on the shuttle at 7am and I was the first group of hikers to get up there. As you said, the reward is totally worth it for the risk. I watched some of your videos too. I hope one day I will hike this trail, half dome, and any other famous trails with my little girl and little man when they grow up, just like you did with your daughter.
Hi Randy, "Angel's Landing" is definitely my most favorite and thrilling hike in Zion National Park. I Have done it many times and even in the rain and snow. You gave some very sound advice for those that have never hiked it... As you said, this is definitely not a hike for those that are fearful of heights; just hike as far as "Scout Lookout" and stop. Do Not attempt the last half mile chain section. I know how busy you are Randy but I hope you do this hike again in a few years.... I made the first ascent of 1978 on Angels Landing. (It was New Years Day, I started early, and there was hoarfrost that would have shown the tracks of anyone ahead of me.) I had that amazing summit all to myself! I see the press of people up there now, and I want to cry. Which is why I will never divulge the names or locations of other hikes/climbs that are just as scenic, just as exposed, and just as challenging as the Landing. (Okay, in addition to a couple of the ones that you mention, there's the Exum Ridge Route on Grand Teton. But it's hairy enough and regulated enough not to attract dilettantes.) Maybe someday the "bucket list" fad will blow over and it will be safe to mention the others. Meanwhile, if you want a great hike, and don't want to battle a mob, you can still find such places. But find them for yourself, and don't share them on social media.
It looks like an interesting hike for those up to the challenge however it also look like a nightmare for any rescue team trying to bring down an injured hiker from the top.

I hiked this last month and whole the views were incredible, it was PACKED with people turning around because of getting scared halfway through. So dangerous! And, a girl had to be airlifted due to exhaustion. It was an amazing experience overall, but I’ll never do it again.
There are so many unique experiences that people encounter on this hike. Congratulations on making it safely to the top! Something you'll always remember!
Beautiful Zion I’ll never forget the view on that hike I personally didn’t find anything to daunting on this hike but being from the east coast the switchbacks and elevation were a little tough
Nice video! Update: They are implementing a pilot permit program beginning April 2022 for Angel's Landing. It will be my first time taking this hike and I had to register for my lotto permit by January in order to hit the trail in May. I'm hoping this will help with the crowding.
me and my friends just did this hike yesterday and we were warned beforehand that we needed to get cramp ons because it is icy when you get to the switchbacks. we just went up and i am not a hiker and i was wearing tennis shoes. getting up the switchbacks being ice was a little tough, but the chain section is when it got scary. i made it through the first section of the chain section and would not go further. it was all ice and very sketchy even if you had cramps on. if you go during the winter i wouldn’t recommend going further than the first little chain section or you legit will probably slip and fall
+1 on permit system, no peer pressuring, and no small kids. We had two people with their INFANTS on their backs. They JUMPED us on the chains. It was so dangerous and not worth the risk! And the amount of people "egging" their friends who didn't want to do the chains was staggering. I hope when I go back next year there is a permit system. Great video!
I fell in love with Zion NP watching Matt's Off Road Recovery. They travel through this sometimes. I didn't know about Angel's landing. I would NEVER do this hike but your video is breath-taking. It's as close as I will ever get to going up there. I am partially disabled and I'm pretty clumsy so I would never risk it. But those views are spectacular. Thank you so much.
Hiked up in 55 minutes. It took almost two and a half hours to get down. Started at dawn and by the time I left the top there were hundreds of people coming up. A lot of those folks looked very uncomfortable and scared. I even passed two young ladies wearing flip flops. It's a safe hike if you're careful, come prepared, and don't have a fear of heights. Turning up thinking it's a breeze is gonna be asking for trouble. Fantastic video sir.
Great video. I just did the hike this past Wed. I was lucky to win the day before lottery. I did it in 97 and had lost the photos and of course it was before digital cameras so I wanted to do it again and properly document it. The part at 1:25 is truly terrifying. My friend stopped and turned back after the first set of chains. The only thing that pushed me to do it was I knew I had done it before and there is wave of motivation you get walking it with the people around you and watching the people ahead of you. I didn't even stop to take any photos at the scariest parts or I think I would have had a panic attack. It is a religious experience for me. It's gives the average intermediate hiker a chance to conquer a peak that otherwise would not be traversable.
Completed this hike in July 2021. I watched your original video before traveling from Kansas. I think that video was an accurate representation of what I experienced. Most important piece of advice was starting early before the crowds. This video is a great addition to the original. With all this information in mind, everyone can have a great time. Looking forward to the next time I make it back to complete this hike!

This was definitely the perfect hike to use your 360 camera on honestly. The footage really came out so vivid like we were actually there. When I did this hike I do remember seeing all the little kids on it and I did make me cringe as well. Thank you so much for sharing your words of wisdom on this Trail. As someone who will probably never do a hike in my life, this was an awesome video, super informative to people like me who might encounter the “legend” of this trail to learn the realities of the situation and also get a small glimpse of the beauty of the area.
Hi Randy. I had videos running in the background while I did some journaling this evening but when this video came up I had to put my pen down and watch. I am on a trek to do at least one hike in every US national park in the lower 48 by the end of 2026. So far, my only NP hikes have been this one, which was my first, and the Rim Trail at Bryce (intended to do the Peekaboo Loop but missed my turn and didn't realize it. duh.) Anyway, I recall sitting in the exact spot you did at 5:38 in this video. In fact, I have a pic from that exact vantage point. This brings back memories and heightens my resolve to tackle this hike again in 2022. Also, I met a couple in their 80s who completed this hike on the same day I was there. Thanks for doing another on this epic hike.
My wife and I did this hike under the full moon a couple weeks ago. Not risky if you’re comfortable with exposure and heights. Fantastic experience and great way to have a popular hike all to yourself!

This video is excellent. If you are considering doing angel's Landing in Zion national Park, this is one of the best advices tips and etc that you will find on the internet about this hike. 2009, I attempted angel's Landing however due to circumstances I was not able to complete it. I was 52 years old. 10 years later in 2019 I went back and I completed the angel's Landing hike at 62 years old. I'm returning to Zion next year 2024 and I once again plan on doing Angel's Landing. Hi if I can get a permit. I am currently 67 years old and I have plans that I'm working on to do the same hike in the future when I'm 72! This is all God willing. You never know what you can do unless you take that first step outside your comfort zone! Enjoy the adventure. This is one of the most beautiful places on the planet that I have found so far!

Finished Angels Landing on a Thursday in March and it’s an amazing hike. Tough switchbacks, drop offs with views, little ice for fun and a condor nest on top. Great hike, hurry before lotto in April!
I did this climb in September 2021, and if you are not afraid of heights and just be very careful as you work your way along the chains, it is not too bad. The view from the top is spectacular. Glad I did it before permits are needed.
I'm mortified of heights but hiked half dome. I was scared, but properly prepared & wore a via ferrata on the dome. I appreciate the info in this video. Thanks for sharing.
Back in 2007 I hiked Angels Landing unsure of what I was getting myself into. It was an awesome hike and when we got back to the start off spot my young son realized he left his backpack along the trail. So I had to go back out and get it. Kind of crazy. I am so happy i did it but at my age now I don't think I would be comfortable going out there. Thanks for the video brought back some great memories.
We are going there in February and even prior to seeing this video I know I would be too afraid to do this hike. So it was fun to see the video, and I will see the other amazing things in Zion.
Thank you for posting this video and showing viewers the amazing video you have of Angels landing. For myself being someone who grew up going to zion national park and planning on going into the park service, I've never hiked Angels landing and it's not that I never thought I couldn't do it, I just have a really bad fear of heights and I'm not afraid to admit that. Advice for people who feel ashamed or pressured to do this hike, listen to what he says, don't be ashamed, and know your limitations. Another thing for people who think wearing proper shoes on a hike is a joke or not irresponsible, I would suggest don't think that way the rock can become slippery even without it being wet or icy, that all has to do with the type of shoes you wear. Be safe everyone who goes on the hike and remember to follow park safety rules, they get put there for a reason and that reason isn't to annoy you, it's to protect you and the wildlife.
The chain section of the Angel’s Landing Trail is the best, and most beautiful and rewarding part of the trail. The chain section is where all of the best views are. When I went, permits were not yet required. Now, everyone must purchase a reservation prior to hiking the Angel’s Landing.
Stunning video! I've watched this video more than once and it always amazes me, as well as your other Zion videos. The view at 4:06 is breathtaking! I walked part of the way up that trail a few years ago when I visited Zion. I knew then there was no way I'd hike all the way so I really appreciate this video and you taking us up to Angel's Landing. It's a hike not for the faint of heart or those not in shape and lack experience.
It's a beautiful hike! I've done it with 2 children who were seasoned hikers and we had no issues. I would not do the trail if it was wet. Make sure you pay attention while moving and if you want to soak up the scenery, stop. Make sure you are sober while doing it if getting drunk or high is your thing.

Since you released this video, the NPS instituted a a daily lottery for selection of the hikers who will be able to hike the section past Scout’s lookout. You can designate a party up to six including yourself. You are notified at approximately 1700 the day of the lottery whether you will be permitted to hike the chain section. You must enter the lottery between midnight and 1500 the day before you desire to hike. The lottery takes place shortly after 1500 and you are emailed whether you were selected or not. Rangers man two checkpoints to register the hikers. One is located on the west rim trail just after you cross the river. You must show the selection email granting you access to the chain section and a picture ID; and another checkpoint at the base of the chain section. When I went up there might have been 30 to 40 hikers on the chain section or at the top. One of the Rangers told me about 25% of people who enter the daily lottery is selected. You have to have an existing NPS account or create a new one before you can enter the lottery. You select from a group of time frames you would need to start the hike. The changes seemed to be effective and well administered.

I read this description and the comments below and I thank Whatever Runs the Show that I first came alone out West in 1983, a 43-year-old woman. I took the train to Flagstaff, then a little mountain town, rented a car and drove up to Moab. I hiked out to Delicate Arch in Arches. I had no idea what I was going to see, hear, smell and feel. Each step was a revelation. We, thorugh the internet, have slaughtered exploration and discovery. Just a thought for those of you who watch this video and read these comments. Try once in what is left of your life going to a once wild place without any prior knowledge of what you will see and feel. I say that as a gift. I'd love to see if anyone does that and what comments they then make here.
I hiked Angel's Landing two weeks ago (5/2/2023). A few additions to this comment. We secured our lottery spot about two months in advance. You do not need to wait until the day before, but it cannot be secured the day of your hike. We were never asked to present our permit, but we were told that rangers could stop us at any point on the trail to ask for it. We were back off the ridge line before 11 am and there was a ranger just coming up to start checking permits most likely. I'm glad we did the hike as early as possible because there was easily twice as many people at Scout's Landing when we came back. In addition to good foot wear, I would also recommend keeping both hands free and your pack as small as possible. Also, there are TONS of very friendly ground squirrels around the area. Keep an eye on your food and don't share your snacks. Yes, people have fallen off the peak, but I suspect there have probably been more injuries and heart attacks on the way up, which is no joke. Make sure you are in good shape.
A few years ago when I did this hike, the only times I felt unsafe was when people were being pushy going in the other direction. I'm glad to hear they are taking control of this before more people are hurt.
As I watch videos of the narrower sections, I'm surprised how intense the scene looks in video compared to in person. I think the wide angle lens of most GoPro's make it look a lot narrower than it really is.
I wanna salute the guys who carried the chains and posts up the mountain so the hikers would have something to grab onto. Imagine that job. And the installation. Geez. I love the Utah parks but I can’t do this type of trail.

I did this hike as my very first hike ever with a group of 17 strangers a month or 2 ago. It was absolutely incredible. I am petrified of heights & could only make it up the very first section of chains before having a panic attack & having to stop....BUT, I love getting to see people keep going & complete it. I truly hope someday I'll go back & actually complete the full hike to angel's landing...but for now, I can say I made it "90%". Thanks for the great real view videos!!!
This was my first NP hike. Not my first hike but my first NP hike, and I started solo but made friends in both directions that day in 2019. What memories!

Another option to Angel’s Landing is to continue on up the West Rim Trail. If you are after the views without the thrill it cannot be beat. You end up looking down on the Landing with stunning views. This is what we do when we visit Zion.

We did West Rim Trail the day before AL. I agree, the views are excellent...and the crowds disappear beyond the landing. The hike to or even beyond Cabin Spring even offers some cliffy excitement ;) Cheers!
I had tried to climb the Angel's Landing but decided to turn back not even at half way. LOL. Had light headache, blurry vision and feeling like I was going to fall at any moment. My life was more important than the hike. LOL

If you’re feeling extra adventurous have someone drop you off at the start of West Rim Trail and hike ~15 miles into Zion. It’s incredible. One of the best backpacking trips I’ve ever done.
My family and I did Angels Landing this past May. I will be honest, I am terribly afraid of heights and I was having anxiety about doing this...up until the last moment of deciding!! I went back and forth deciding if I would go all the way to the top...using the chains. I made my decision right at the chains...and I am SO glad I decided to go!! It was a HUGE challenge for me and I felt amazing accomplishing it. What helped me was to focus on the persons shoes in front of me. I know this sounds odd...LOL...but I literally kept my focus on the strangers shoes and verbally telling myself I can do this. I would also suggest NOT to watch too many videos of other people doing this! It scared me! Final words...if you are afraid of heights, be honest with yourself, but, at the same time, push yourself!

Did this hike a couple years ago and 100% agree with your take. Everyone I have told about it I have said three things. 1) Know your own limits, 2) There are clearly some people who have no business being out there, and 3) go early to avoid the crowds.
I saw a number of people who couldn’t do this section under their own power. One was a kid of about 5 years old and the other was a woman who looked to be about 80 years old. The other thing I saw that I thought was questionable was a young fit couple, but they had infants in Baby Bjorns. It looked too heavy and unstable to me. Maybe they felt comfortable, but it made me nervous just watching them.

Written through modestly tear soaked eyes.....Although I have shared many words of gratitude on many, many videos I often feel it impossible to put into words what your videos and modest friendship have meant to me and my family over the years. This video brought me back to one of the first. if not the absolute first video I saw on your channel. It was when you scaled Half Dome with Natalie. Living with a visual disability the reality of doing that or a hike like Angel's Landing is not realistically in the cards for me. I get emotional about that sometimes because I sure want to with all my heart and have found peace with that because your videos, allow me to "be there" in a way that may not be possible. The advances in your cameras and techniques have come so far and give an almost virtual reality feel to them. This was gift. They all have been but this one struck a chord somehow. Hey Randy, great video. My wife and I visited the mighty five in May. We chose not to do angles landing but we did observation point, it was really cool to watch the folks on angles landing. Everyone should visit this part of our beautiful country and see what Gods hand has done.

I love this hike and the entire park. I worked at Zion Park for two summers back in the 70s and climbed AL several times. It didn't have all the chains in those days. We also climbed it at night which was its own thrill. Seeing the canyon from Angels Landing in the glow of the full moon is a whole other experience. The West Rim trail is also a great hike. I agree with Randy, if you're comfortable with the hike then you don't want to miss it. Thanks for the beautiful videos and the memories.

I was at Zion about a week ago. I hiked the Canyon overlook trail, it was awesome. This old timer doesn't have the strength or nerve to do Angels landing. But man it looks spectacular.
Finally accomplished Angel’s Landing today (technically yesterday). This was my second visit to Zion, the first time me and my girlfriend went was in September of 2020 and we were only able to do the Narrows because the chains section of Angel’s Landing was closed during that time due to COVID . Upon hearing that there was going to be a permit system implemented in 2022 me and my girlfriend decided we had to go back and face one of our bucket list hikes. We were completely blown away and facing a hike so intimidating as this was such an accomplishment to us. Your videos have always served as an inspiration to us and we are so grateful for the content you put out. Thank you!

Just got home from Zion Park. Did the Narrows river walk which kept us at ground level up the river canyon.
I believe there are basically 3 groups of people 1. Those with little or no fear of heights. Most alpinists and rock climbers in this category. 2. People with a moderate fear of heights but can overcome this fear and complete the challenge of Angels Landing. 3. People with a paralyzing gut wrenching uncontrollable fear of heights causing an almost paralysis of body when encountering heights. I put myself in this 3rd category and cannot even fathom how people can complete this hike. You could offer me a million dollars and I simply would not be able to overcome my fear to even attempt this hike. With all that being said, I certainly enjoyed ( with queasy feeling ) experiencing the Angels Landing trail and views through your amazing video.

I couldn’t imagine taking my child on this hike 😬 We just came back from a trip to Zion. We did the Riverside Walk, Emerald Pools, some of the Grotto & the Patriarchs. My daughter had a blast. We will do this trail when she’s much, much older, adult age & has more experience. Not to mention, better balance! National parks have gotten so much more popular lately and I wish more people would do better research. Great video!

Angels Landing is my favorite hike I have done so far!! I haven’t got as many as you, but I have hiked a lot of cool trails.
My son and I did this hike in Dec ‘18 with a lot of snow and ice. Loved it.
We had hiking boots, and crampons. Wearing /having the right gear is tge first step to safely and successfully conquering any trail/climb.

Your video was beautiful, and I enjoyed seeing that sights I couldn't appreciate because I was concentrating on my foot placement. I strongly agree with your comments at the end- we can't let someone else talk us into the hike, and we have to be confident in our own physical abilities (healthy ankles, arm strength, etc.). I've been a mountain hiker all my life and have bagged some worthy peaks. I first attempted Angel's Landing 10 years ago in February but gave up because Walter's Wiggles were slippery ice and the chains were frozen in ice above Scout Camp. Didn't see a soul except one solo mountaineer with crampons and an ice axe who summited and recommended we not go further without mixed ice/snow climbing gear.
Three years ago I got to the top in October and conditions were perfect *but* there were over 1,500 people climbing that day. Such a narrow route meant I had to deal with hundreds of people who had no idea what they were doing (flipflops, no water) and put me at risk, mostly because I started mid-afternoon and had to suffer lots of tired people stumbling down the route while I was going up.
Angel's Landing is out of control and imagine a quota/reservation is in its future. Till then, try to schedule for a shoulder season instead of summer, be in reasonable shape and prepared with good shoes, a pack with clothes & lotsa water. On a good day, get up @6:00am and be on the first busload to the bus stop so you're ahead of the soon to be stragglers. Don't be a dummy and attempt when the weather report is bad. Best way to play it is get a campground site for a week, explore the short hikes until the weather is good, then go for it. In good weather it's a Class 2 hike with heavy exposure but the chains make it quite safe.
I'll never do it again, it's a way too crowded bucket list thing with lots of foreign tourists who are on a schedule and will push you aside to get ahead. I don't like that; no problem on a forest trail but on a 4 foot wide stairstep ridge with 1,000 foot drops on both sides I'd rather not be taking the risk.

I attribute your video on the South Kaibab/Bright Angel trail as a contributing factor as to why I did this very hike in 11 hrs a few weeks ago at the age of 58. Your channel is my new rabbit hole.

You inspired me to get more grippy shoes, know my limitations and not feel pressured to go further than I was prepared to go, physically or mentally and funny enough, it was YOUR voice I heard in my head (without realizing it until just now) reminding me to consider the risks/benefits as I stood on ‘that’ spot of the chain section in your other video. Truly…your advice was critical and spot-on when it came to my safety, enjoyment and success on this hike, so again, thank you very much. *Side note: Although I DO appreciate this update to your previous video, it was very helpful to see you (and Tim) candidly do this hike, demonstrating what it’s really like, step by step. I don't know why you don't have more subs. You have a great voice, and obviously make an effort to be educated about your subjects. I personally will never hike this because I will freeze and not be able to continue at some point, and it would put others in jeopardy. It definitely needs some kind of a permit system.

It scared the heck out of me, but I used the safety protocols you outlined in your previous videos and everything was just fine. I always maintained three points of contact regardless of how ridiculous I may have looked like, but it gave me a sense of security that helped me to persevere to the top, as this was a challenge for me being afraid of heights. Just found this video. Subscriber for a long time. I fulfilled a lifelong dream on May 4 of this year by doing this hike. I've looked at it most of my life. Finally got to come to Zion. I slipped during the first 100 feet of the chains. . I nearly fell and died. I went back to Scouts Lookout and literally sat there shaking for ten minutes. I told no one back home. But after 20 more minutes I decided I was not going back down or giving up. I started again. And I did it. I still don't know how.
It's not being melodramatic.....but it changed my life. I was so scared. And I kept going. It's possibly the prettiest views I've ever seen.
But it was so crowded. And I was on the first shuttle at 7am. It looked like ants going up. I hope a permit system can be put in place. It is best for the resource.

It is a relatively easy hike. It is one of my favorite short hikes in the United States. The only issue I have with it is become very crowded. The first time you get past the steep switchbacks half way up the trail it can be daunting for some people. Just take your time hold on and let people by if they are faster climbers than you. The second time you climb angels landing it is a cake walk. There are many more hikes in america that are more dangerous than this. It is well worth the hike up. I wish I lived closer by. I would hike this every day to keep in shape.

I have done the Angels Landing hike 11 times over the years, including once in the winter when the trail was 95% snow & ice. I wore microspikes during the winter hike(recommended by park rangers). I saw people wearing just sneakers on the winter hike. They were slipping & sliding all along the trail. One guy actually asked me to catch him if he started to fall(no kidding). I don't think that the trail is overly dangerous, but people put themselves into a dangerous situation by doing things such as standing next to the edge while taking a selfie.

I've been to Zion many times and and have taken most of the park's hikes, but there's no way I'd go out on Angels Landing. No matter how prepared and careful I might be (and I would be), it would mess with my head so much that I'd surely find myself stuck out on the middle of the trail paralyzed with fear. Which would obviously defeat the point of experiencing the stunning scenery! I'm amazed that so many people can take this hike like the proverbial "walk in the park". Thanks for sharing your excellent video so I can enjoy it virtually.

This is the best Angels Landing video I have seen. My only addition is that I would NOT wear a backpack. It can distort your balance at at only 5 miles round trip you can live without water or food. Only take your camera.

Beautifully done video! Did this with my husband a few years ago at age 64. Imo it's not a difficult hike IF you're okay with heights, respect the danger, and know your physical capabilities. Admittedly, hardest part was going down and having to look at the 1500 ft drop 😬 lol.

Atta Boy Randy !!! When I saw which camera you were using my initial thought was "this perspective could get wonky." Which it did but it captured the experience of the environment better than actually hiking it because when you are actually hiking it a person tends to focus on just where their feet are placed. I have made it to Angel's Landing at least three times. Once I was with my teenage son. He got to that random tree part along the chains. There is a landing of sorts. He said, that he was good with that view and waited for me to go up and come back.

Yeah, we hit it at a perfect time.
Nicely done Randy. Good advice and beautiful photography. Zion in our favorite park and in fact we are headed there tomorrow. My impression is that the views from the top of Angels Landing are equalled by other locations in the park, so if you have a healthy fear/respect of heights there is no need to go to the end just to count coup. Scout's landing is where we choose to turn around. Too many people on the chained sections. One last word of warning for fellow fearers of heights. It is absolutely scary and once you decide to bail you still have to make it back down, which is at least as terrifying. :-)

Very cool video. I hiked angels landing when about 53 years old. It was Amazing. There are many scary things I would never do but the chains gave me a feeling of security and I was super careful. I would do that hike again at my current age of 60.

My hiking days of this trail are long over. In the 70's I would start this trail, but would always turn around, just to darn scary for me. Thank you for your wonderful photography and your views at the end of the hike!

Just hiked Angels Landing last weekend. It is actually less scary than I thought. I got on the shuttle at 7am and I was the first group of hikers to get up there. As you said, the reward is totally worth it for the risk. I watched some of your videos too. I hope one day I will hike this trail, half dome, and any other famous trails with my little girl and little man when they grow up, just like you did with your daughter.

Hi Randy, "Angel's Landing" is definitely my most favorite and thrilling hike in Zion National Park. I Have done it many times and even in the rain and snow.
You gave some very sound advice for those that have never hiked it... As you said, this is definitely not a hike for those that are fearful of heights; just hike as far as "Scout Lookout" and stop. Do Not attempt the last half mile chain section.

I made the first ascent of 1978 on Angels Landing. (It was New Years Day, I started early, and there was hoarfrost that would have shown the tracks of anyone ahead of me.) I had that amazing summit all to myself! I see the press of people up there now, and I want to cry.
Which is why I will never divulge the names or locations of other hikes/climbs that are just as scenic, just as exposed, and just as challenging as the Landing. (Okay, in addition to a couple of the ones that you mention, there's the Exum Ridge Route on Grand Teton. But it's hairy enough and regulated enough not to attract dilettantes.) Maybe someday the "bucket list" fad will blow over and it will be safe to mention the others. Meanwhile, if you want a great hike, and don't want to battle a mob, you can still find such places. But find them for yourself, and don't share them on social media.
I'm with you, my friend. I only mentioned the popular/national park hikes. Frequently, I find myself saying, "We'll keep this one a secret."
It looks like an interesting hike for those up to the challenge however it also look like a nightmare for any rescue team trying to bring down an injured hiker from the top.
Yeah, apart from a helicopter, hard to imagine carrying a body down that chain trail. Thanks for watching!

I hiked this last month and whole the views were incredible, it was PACKED with people turning around because of getting scared halfway through. So dangerous! And, a girl had to be airlifted due to exhaustion. It was an amazing experience overall, but I’ll never do it again.
There are so many unique experiences that people encounter on this hike. Congratulations on making it safely to the top! Something you'll always remember!

Update: They are implementing a pilot permit program beginning April 2022 for Angel's Landing. It will be my first time taking this hike and I had to register for my lotto permit by January in order to hit the trail in May. I'm hoping this will help with the crowding.

me and my friends just did this hike yesterday and we were warned beforehand that we needed to get cramp ons because it is icy when you get to the switchbacks. we just went up and i am not a hiker and i was wearing tennis shoes. getting up the switchbacks being ice was a little tough, but the chain section is when it got scary. i made it through the first section of the chain section and would not go further. it was all ice and very sketchy even if you had cramps on. if you go during the winter i wouldn’t recommend going further than the first little chain section or you legit will probably slip and fall

+1 on permit system, no peer pressuring, and no small kids. We had two people with their INFANTS on their backs. They JUMPED us on the chains. It was so dangerous and not worth the risk! And the amount of people "egging" their friends who didn't want to do the chains was staggering. I hope when I go back next year there is a permit system. Great video!

I fell in love with Zion NP watching Matt's Off Road Recovery. They travel through this sometimes. I didn't know about Angel's landing. I would NEVER do this hike but your video is breath-taking. It's as close as I will ever get to going up there. I am partially disabled and I'm pretty clumsy so I would never risk it. But those views are spectacular. Thank you so much.

Hiked up in 55 minutes. It took almost two and a half hours to get down. Started at dawn and by the time I left the top there were hundreds of people coming up. A lot of those folks looked very uncomfortable and scared. I even passed two young ladies wearing flip flops. It's a safe hike if you're careful, come prepared, and don't have a fear of heights. Turning up thinking it's a breeze is gonna be asking for trouble. Fantastic video sir.

Great video. I just did the hike this past Wed. I was lucky to win the day before lottery. I did it in 97 and had lost the photos and of course it was before digital cameras so I wanted to do it again and properly document it. The part at 1:25 is truly terrifying. My friend stopped and turned back after the first set of chains. The only thing that pushed me to do it was I knew I had done it before and there is wave of motivation you get walking it with the people around you and watching the people ahead of you. I didn't even stop to take any photos at the scariest parts or I think I would have had a panic attack. It is a religious experience for me. It's gives the average intermediate hiker a chance to conquer a peak that otherwise would not be traversable.

Completed this hike in July 2021. I watched your original video before traveling from Kansas. I think that video was an accurate representation of what I experienced. Most important piece of advice was starting early before the crowds. This video is a great addition to the original. With all this information in mind, everyone can have a great time. Looking forward to the next time I make it back to complete this hike!

This was definitely the perfect hike to use your 360 camera on honestly. The footage really came out so vivid like we were actually there. Hi Randy. I had videos running in the background while I did some journaling this evening but when this video came up I had to put my pen down and watch. I am on a trek to do at least one hike in every US national park in the lower 48 by the end of 2026. So far, my only NP hikes have been this one, which was my first, and the Rim Trail at Bryce (intended to do the Peekaboo Loop but missed my turn and didn't realize it. duh.) Anyway, I recall sitting in the exact spot you did at 5:38 in this video. In fact, I have a pic from that exact vantage point. This brings back memories and heightens my resolve to tackle this hike again in 2022. Also, I met a couple in their 80s who completed this hike on the same day I was there.

My wife and I did this hike under the full moon a couple weeks ago. Not risky if you’re comfortable with exposure and heights. Fantastic experience and great way to have a popular hike all to yourself!

This video is excellent. If you are considering doing angel's Landing in Zion national Park, this is one of the best advices tips and etc that you will find on the internet about this hike.
2009, I attempted angel's Landing however due to circumstances I was not able to complete it. I was 52 years old. 10 years later in 2019 I went back and I completed the angel's Landing hike at 62 years old. I'm returning to Zion next year 2024 and I once again plan on doing Angel's Landing. Hi if I can get a permit. I am currently 67 years old and I have plans that I'm working on to do the same hike in the future when I'm 72! This is all God willing.
You never know what you can do unless you take that first step outside your comfort zone! Enjoy the adventure. This is one of the most beautiful places on the planet that I have found so far!

Finished Angels Landing on a Thursday in March and it’s an amazing hike. Tough switchbacks, drop offs with views, little ice for fun and a condor nest on top. Great hike, hurry before lotto in April!

I did this climb in September 2021, and if you are not afraid of heights and just be very careful as you work your way along the chains, it is not too bad. The view from the top is spectacular. Glad I did it before permits are needed.

Didn't see any in my 4 trips up there, but I can imagine folks have "frozen" on this trail.
Back in 2007 I hiked Angels Landing unsure of what I was getting myself into. It was an awesome hike and when we got back to the start off spot my young son realized he left his backpack along the trail. So I had to go back out and get it. Kind of crazy. I am so happy i did it but at my age now I don't think I would be comfortable going out there. Thanks for the video brought back some great memories.

Thank you for posting this video and showing viewers the amazing video you have of Angels landing. For myself being someone who grew up going to zion national park and planning on going into the park service, I've never hiked Angels landing and it's not that I never thought I couldn't do it, I just have a really bad fear of heights and I'm not afraid to admit that.
Advice for people who feel ashamed or pressured to do this hike, listen to what he says, don't be ashamed, and know your limitations. Another thing for people who think wearing proper shoes on a hike is a joke or not irresponsible, I would suggest don't think that way the rock can become slippery even without it being wet or icy, that all has to do with the type of shoes you wear.
Be safe everyone who goes on the hike and remember to follow park safety rules, they get put there for a reason and that reason isn't to annoy you, it's to protect you and the wildlife.

The chain section of the Angel’s Landing Trail is the best, and most beautiful and rewarding part of the trail. The chain section is where all of the best views are. When I went, permits were not yet required. Now, everyone must purchase a reservation prior to hiking the Angel’s Landing.

Stunning video! I've watched this video more than once and it always amazes me, as well as your other Zion videos. The view at 4:06 is breathtaking! I walked part of the way up that trail a few years ago when I visited Zion. I knew then there was no way I'd hike all the way so I really appreciate this video and you taking us up to Angel's Landing. It's a hike not for the faint of heart or those not in shape and lack experience.
Really love this hike, but after four trips, think I'm retired and I'll let other people take my place! :)
It's a beautiful hike! I've done it with 2 children who were seasoned hikers and we had no issues. I would not do the trail if it was wet. Make sure you pay attention while moving and if you want to soak up the scenery, stop. Make sure you are sober while doing it if getting drunk or high is your thing.
