Glad you started to call it smoothing compound...as you stated, people just pour and leave it to "self level"... Which is why companies changed to calling it smoothing compound.... Also a good gauge for "level" is the reflection of straight objects on the shiny floor.... Like the double glazing bars... The straighter they are the "leveler" the smoothing compound is....
I always shine the laser level across the floor to figure out where the hollows and hills are before I start. Pour in the hollows and work it with the trowel towards the hills. For large format tiled floors I find it's best to set some height gauges every 2ft and work the compound to them.
Thank you for the video bro! I will do that in a couple of weeks. I have no experience, but I bought all the equipment including the spikes, so there is no going back.
use this stuff quite often when levelling floors for tiling, (still an apprentice) but I remember the start when it was my 3rd or 4th time mixing it up and i got the hang of it. i decided i was going to bring it up the stairs for my mentor and ended up spilling it all down the stairs 😂 he makes sure i don't forget about that lol . luckily hes nice enough to clean it up with me 😂
That no nonsense I found to be very good! Better than some of the more expensive others! Laid my big garage floor with it in minus 2oC, 60 sq metres, 4mm deep,in 2 hours on Xmas eve with my good woman mixing! About to go off to the outlaws and…..a bloody Robin flew in,…😮 got lucky apart from 2 or 3 poos before it flew out! Little shite! Cheers
Had a question 🙋♂️ I was going to plaster a couple of the bathroom walls; Is there waterproofing addictive for the plaster or a sealant you paint on after? Any help would be great the answers i am getting off the google searches are pickling the brain 😅 I was convinced this stuff was magic automatically self leveling until watching this 😂
Hello mate, could you advise the minimum depth i can have the conduit in a chase to not make life difficult for the plasterer as we generally never cross paths with each other.
Neither , as a 58yr old tiler I would always use what we call a slurry bond coat . Basically because the surface of the ceramic is not porus you need it stick , so you mix a small amount of power adhesive into your primer with the power added it will bond to the ceramic much better . Hope that's helpful . Jon the tiler
It will be fine mate but this is designed for it specifically at a higher concentration so you can water it down to penetrate the concrete better. It's also got added polymers 🙂👌
I couldn't put that in the video because different times of year the heat will affect it and different manufacturers of leveling compound will have different set times. You have usually got about an hour and can usually walk on it after about 5 hours
Love your vids Kirk. However, I would say that the HSE would take a dim view of you not promoting the use of a face fitted dust mask when using any powder products esp in a commercial setting
The stuff they sell at Home Depot here in the U.S. dries extremely fast. There is no way that you would be able to go over it all again with a spike roller after doing a room that size. It's a shame because I think if it set slower it would be much better. Luckily I did a ton of research before using it, but reading the comments on the Home Depot web site, a lot of people did not and created a huge mess..
Many problems with this Firstly no expansion foam tape around the edge You didn't measure the water content it tells you the quantities on the bag to much water, and it will not have the same strength the first lot was too watery, and the last lot was too thick the water content is critical use a measured bucket.
You said many problems and then mentioned two nonsense comments. I'm self leveling a floor not screeding it so no need for foam tape. That is for expansion and contraction as a screed sets so it doesn't push against a solid wall and cause a bit of cracking around the edge. Second, the mixes were all gauged with a measuring bucket so they all had exactly the same ratio of water per bag..... as mentioned in the video. 👍
Surely as a professional, you know self levelling compound doesn't actually self level. You need to mark your low and high spots, use a laser level and a stick to make sure you're hitting your marks. You did none of that, and had no way of knowing if that poured level or not.
Any man who freely gives of his knowledge and experience can only command total respect. Well done big man!

Great video. Love you do this without all the unnecessary over priced tools to do this. Basic tools, as you showed, is all that is needed
Spiked roller, Marshall trowel, dewalt cordless mixer....theyre not cheap!
Lovely job

Nice one Kirk
Great vid, can't wait to drink a pint to your health whenever I visit the UK.
Thanks for this. By the way, is the approach different for bitumen coated floors?
That's a great question as I need to know this 😊
Give it one coat of primer and use it neat, dont water it down mate
@@Onthetrowel Thanks!
Best of luck with that
@ You have a better suggestion?
No protection on the patio slabs??
A good plasterer never drips
How would you prime if you were doing this ovwr a ceramic tiled floor. Neat primer or diluted?

"Read the instructions..."
Good advice, often not heeded! 😅
Yes!
I passed out 😂😂 all i could remember was i just started to mix
SO, if I manage to get the mix right, spread it quick like. How long before the lquid becomes un-workable and how long before I can walk on the floor?
The teacher looked like he was doing a winter job, I guess its quicker when hot...
I couldn't put that in the video because different times of year the heat will affect it and different manufacturers of leveling compound will have different set times.

I use old moulded stud football boots for walking on the floor

It's because you can mix without one, and without gloves and without a hard hat lol
Why is the primer a peachy colour??
We made it orange 🍊
@Onthetrowel peachy primer
Glad you didn’t lick your finger after using is to clean the door
