I remember years ago a friend of mine was learning his trade as a carpenter. He told me about an older man who worked around the sites whom he met. A lot of young trainees didn't like working with him because he was a perfectionist in his work whereas they just wanted to quickly throw something up and move on. One example he heard of was when working in an attic space a young trainee said we can just throw in a quick fix and get out and the older man said no. The apprentice argued that the owner won't see it and won't even know it's there. The qualified guy's reply was "I'll know it's there" - nothing else needs to be said really.

Being a floor heating technician i am proud of my own skills and the high quality work i deliver, but i can also truly appreciate and enjoy the craftsmanship of other professionals. This guy knows how to do it right and that in itself is increasingly harder and harder to find. New technicians that want to learn the trade and want to deliver quality work are very very hard to find nowadays. Good sir i salute you.

Never mind the chit-chat (or not) it's really interesting to hear the sound of the work. The sound of tools is really important and it's missed on a lot of TH-camrs content. Great stuff as always.

Good to see you removing excess overspill plaster from upvc frames etc. as a painter and decorator, I always have to remove it to get a clean line our else it looks terrible, in fact I’m painting a newly plastered bedroom next week and I can bet I’ll have to clean the areas where the plaster has been left on the upvc etc.

@@Onthetrowel I have to agree as well. Let's assume we are talking about a GOOD plasterer. Look at what a customer gets for their money. Look at the knowledge involved to do a GOOD job. Look at the physical effort involved. Look at the cost of tools required....I could go on. Compare that, say, to the 'computer man' I had round last year, just to give my computer a 'tidy up' and general check-up. £70 PER HOUR. Of course, he has knowledge and the skills required but who is to judge who's worth what? As for Kirk as an individual, look at how much he does in a day to earn his £300 (minimum)! 🙂

If only all plasterers practiced this level of care and attention - a treat to watch. Doing up my place and I've been through 4 plasterers in the last 2 years and only 1 was even remotely acceptable (all highly rated). The amound of sanding, filling, and even patching I've had to do is shocking. Cleaning up those internal angles? No chance. Fading out the plaster by the architrave? No chance (ended up putting planters in beforehand). Cleaning up the windows frames? No chance. Fading out to where skirting goes? No chance - nice big step to give you wonky skirting. Clean finish around sockets and pipework? No chance, the apocolypse finish is good enough!! Domestic plasterers are by far the worst trade in terms of quality. Massive skills gap in the industry.

BTW, if you are to make an updated super guide to skimming, one thing I thought of to add, is that in addition to showing timings and touch tests, you could be the first to show what the plaster should look like it’s doing when the trowel goes over it during each stage, how it should look like it’s changing in appearance, how it should NOT look, etc. to know you are hitting the timings perfectly. If that all makes sense 😅

Lovely plastering 👍 - I am curious about the cavity closer though - it was only part of the way up and it seems to be that this will still cause a cold bridge along with the fact that it wasn't installed before the doors went in which are attached to the brickwork and that it is not sealed to brickwork either inside or outside - I may be mistaken but I would have thought that the purpose of the cavity closer is to form a closed junction that prevents thermal bridging between the cavity and inner and outer brickwork through being sealed?

I had a bit to do that day so I didn't have time to take out the doors to fit a bit of plastic.
It's not really my job but I've found if I don't do it then nobody else will.
There was one behind the original reveals but not where the wall used to be.
It doesn't have to be airtight it's just to stop the reveal getting cold, it probably would of been fine without it as the cavity was full of wool but I did it just to be safe.
We've just got to do the best we can with what we've got when we arrive.
Again it would be great if everyone did their job like this but that's the building trade for you

A good plasterer is worth his weight in gold as we used to say in the building game.

Hi great job you make it so easy 👍I have tried some plastering when I did bathroom fitting but it is difficult. When did you take the bottom bits of plaster board out or cut it out where you said don’t let it touch the floor. Looking forward to the next one 👍

Compared to this, my plastering looks like a five year old has thrown mud on the wall. Great stuff 👏

This is how its done. I just finished sanding the plasterwork because the guy had left absolutely rubbish work. Cheap and very fast, and I am now working my ass off to fix it.. he’s not working here anymore for sure!

The attention to detail on your work is unreal mate. I've learnt loads from your channel. What size is your trowel? I know it's 4" wide, what's length buddy?

Love both styles of videos..... Why didn't they take the lining paper back to the corner and trim it thr.... Would have been a easier job for you and they only have to paint where yo plastered instead of having a paper edge in middle of wall...... O well I no doubt they had there reason.... Customer is always right 🤦🏼‍♂️..... Great tips all the time 💪💪
