I noticed you had the hybrid in Sport mode when you said it was noisier. That is because the sport mode in the hybrid pipes sound into the cabin to make it sound more aggressive. If you didn’t have it in sport mode it would have been quieter than the 1.5 turbo.

There’s only one CVT option and it comes with the 1.5 turbo
The hybrid dose not have a CVT it has 2 electric motors one driven by the engine like a generator and one by the battery + generator.
At highway speeds it has a direct drive mode with the engine powering the wheels directly but only in a certain speed range 🤙

After reading an online review by Car&Driver magazine I pretty much thought what you say is what they said. However, I still have a hard time understanding how this works and what is different between the 2WD and the AWD models. I have come close a few times to buying a hybrid vehicle, I was very impressed by a Toyota Avalon Hybrid, but a lot of my driving is high speeds.

This was an excellent video. I think for most people, the decision between the hybrid and turbo is a much more difficult decision than deciding between the CR-V and other companies' competing models. Gearheads seem to be split on the engine: Some like the simplicity of the non-hybrid and others do not like anything that has a turbo attached to it. I hope you do a refresh comparison with the 2024 CR-V's, even if they haven't changed much from 2023. Honda will toss in some meaningful subtle tweaks when there are no substantial changes.

I live in rural area in New York and 90% of my driving is a 20 minute drive to work on the highway. Think I'll get the EXL. I prefer the 2L but 1.5L with Turbo should do the trick. I'm pretty excited. I had a 2007 AWD and 2012 AWD CRVs loved those then got a 2018 BMW X1 early midlife crisis haha, now I'm back to reality. This will be my first brand new car looking to keep it for a long long time. I'd love an Acura RDX A Spec but that's not happening haha. CRV for the win.

heyzooz, I agree with your thinking on a financial basis. Just be sure to look into whether Honda has defeated the oil dilution issue with their 1.5T engine. Look into what another respondant to you said...."It's Not a CVT tranny". It is called e-cvt by Honda. It is different and particular to Honda only (unlike Subarus or Nissan Rogue). We (actually my wife's car) our 3rd CRV [2010; 2013; and now a 2016 with only 42K miles on it], never had a problem with any of them [Other than the Air Bag issue with our 2013 which we traded in May 2016] . Just change the oil, buy new tires, new brake pads - good to go. With regular gas, doing Max 65-70 MPH with Non Winter Gas in NY, we get about 29-30 MPGs on the highway. I have "wrestled" with Trading the 2016 in for a new CRV (either the EXL or the Hybrid Sport Touring) but the Pricing is through the Roof. FWIW, if you can find one, take a look at a used 2021 HYbrid. I test drove that car about a year ago (new) and was impressed with the upgrade in HP power and Torque and of course the Uptick in MPGs! - and extra features of Honda Safety Fetaures. But after doing the Math, decided to keep it, put new tires on it and good to go for her purposes of primarily local driving in retirement. I will say, the new 2023 is better looking in its redesign (in fact it looks like a baby Brother to my 22 Acura MDX).

      Hybrid Battery Replacement Timeline
While a standard auto battery is replaced every two or three years on average, the hybrid battery lasts considerably longer. In fact, your car won’t require a hybrid battery replacement until around 150,000 miles or 15 years under normal conditions! This is just an average, so a driver in New London might need a replacement sooner than another driver in Branford. But even if the battery fails prematurely for some reason, Honda has you covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles by the limited warranty!

    Thanks Ben,
Very interesting review. We are looking for a replacement of our '18 NA Mazda CX-5, its a great handling SUV, the steering wheel feeling is great, drives like a sporty sedan. Just hate that it does not have enough power when crossing heavy traffic, the brakes take to long to stop compared to my Honda Accord V6. The rear seats do not incline as needed. Has a lovely sporty look and is very reliable with good MPG. We had a prior Honda '08 CRV and a '04 Pilot that we loved, so maybe we would come back to a new Honda CRV, they look attractive, just need to decide between the Turbo and the Hybrid, for sure better torque would be a deciding factor and good braking.👍

Thanks for the nice review! With regards to the “noise” in the Sport Hybrid, it’s interesting how you, as well as some others, complain/comment about the added acceleration sound in Sport mode. A) Aside from doing it for shits and giggles, is the demographic for the CRV even going to use sport mode much? B) Although I would like an option to toggle the added acceleration noise on/off, it kind of adds to the “Sport Mode” experience, if that’s what you want.

We went for the EXL because I hated the orange stitching and all black interior, just ghastly, (though guys don't seem to mind). I totally fell in love with the light leather interior of the EXL. If there was a choice of interiors I would have gone for the Hybrid because of the fuel economy. It was heart over head ;). The EXL drives like a dream and the power steering and turn circle is an improvement on the Honda 19 CRV which we traded in. We looked at the 2023 RAV 4 Toyota but it looks too ugly, kind of like a tank. I wish Honda sold dog car barriers but they don't, so it's trawling the net for a universal one from Amazon.

The Bottomline to this comparison is: Do you spend $4K more to get about an average of 20% (City / Highway) increase in MPGs? For Example... Doing the math on this basis: 10,000 miles driven per year (50/50 split City/Hwy) / 28 MPG (non Hybrid) = 357 gallons of gas X $4 a gallon= $1, 428 of gas consumed per year; 10,000 miles / 34 avg MPG for the Hybrid = 294 gallons of gas @ $4 per gallon= $1,176. That's a difference of $251 dollars annually. With all things being equal (price of gas, average miles driven with a 50/50 combo) it would take you 15 Years to relaize the Savings!! That is not considering the better "ride" and more power from the Hybrid. In my case, I am considering Trading our 2016 CRV Touring with 42K miles on it, for a new Sport Hybrid Touring. That existing CRV has no loan, an estimated $19K in Equity to be used as a Downpayment , maybe add in another $10 K in downpayment funds and take a loan of $10K @4% interest. The useage average is about 6500 miles per ( less now that we are both retired ; only local driving with occassional trips to Children's houses) , with average MPGs of 22 since owning it (City 80% / 20% Hwy) = 295 gallons of gas per year @$4 a gallon = $1,181 gas consumed vs 191 Gallons of gas (for the new Hybrid with same useage) @$4 a gallon= $765 for gas. That equates to $416 a year savings for gas. Economically speaking.... The $416 would pay 1 Month's of new Loan Payments !! Notwithsatnding that we would have Newer car with more amenities / improvements, more Popwer / pep & better MPGs, it seems that it would be much better to either Do Nothing or at a minimum consider a 2021 or 2022 CRV Hybrid. The new Re-design CRV is attractive (looks alittle like a smaller brother Acura 2022 MDX - which I have) .

I live in NYC and my 2022 model was stolen just got it it in September. I Have to go for the 2023 model this time since the 2022 are not in production anymore. the insurance is replacing my stolen vehicle but I’m still worried it might get stolen again I think Honda should offer Honda link tracking in all trims not only on the touring versions. And they should do much better at security on the locking system the push start ignition and fog keys are just to easy for thieves to to hack and steal them. This time I’m putting a better alarm, using a steaming wheel lock and probably looting a lock boot on the tires. And yes a a few gps tracking systems even an Apple air tag.
