    I still don’t think that I’ll buy these paints. I only like the Volcano Yellow and Red and the Glacier Turquoise. I think these are the only colours that I can understand. All the other paints are mixtures that we can mix ourselves or mixtures of beautiful single pigments that have been deliberately mixed into boring browns and greys. I do not understand that.

    Your paintings are the best part of these paints. I feel underwhelmed otherwise by all of them. They have inspired me to buy a few granulating colors from Daniel Smith that I didn't already own. But I'm thankful that you bought these so I didn't have to.

    Some of them are very beautiful. It's a pity they don't rewet well. I was thinking about buying one of the sets, but after seeing this video I have changed my mind.I think it is better to get only the color tubes you like.The sets are very expensive and some of the colors are really disappointing. Great review as always. You make me happy every time you upload a video.

      I'm glad it helped, and I think choosing individual tubes of favourite colours and mixes is the better financial choice! I have a whole load of these boxes now; maybe I should put them all on display, lol.

    Your paintings turned out very cute!
    I think we should combine these granulating colours with other paints in a painting and don't use them on their own, more like a feature. I had a huge binder separation problem with the yellow and orange. I bought the 5ml tubes and there was only half of the yellow left after I filled a half pan. I was just unable to mix the paint and binder back together. I received two new tubes from Schmincke which were fine.
    I think people asked for yellow and red granulating colours and, as you said, there are not a ton of options. After the first disappointment that the yellow was not as bright as I expected it to be, I now like it a lot. I don't have rewetting problems with them when I put one or two drops of water in my half pans and wait a few minutes before I use them. Maybe you like them better when you use them more. Well, I hope so because they are so expensive.

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The binder splitting away is an issue I had with quite a lot of them, though not with the yellow, weirdly enough! I am thinking I might mix in another yellow to make it brighter and more easy to rewet. Also the red!

    The colors are lovely but not well saturated which is a big bummer since they're so expensive. I noticed the shire set is impossible to work with. Once dried they are impossible to rewet, even fresh from the tube they barely "wet". I don't know how else to describe it. Thanks for the thorough review. I'm always curious about these sets, but they do feel "gimmicky" as you said. Some colours seem repetitive and you'd need more than one set to have a proper range. There'll be a lot of tubes left that won't get any use, and it seems a bit wasteful. A bit disappointing to hear that dark values are hard to achieve or that paints aren't economical. For something so expensive I expected a better product. So I think I'd rather invest in single pigments and use them to mix my own. Cheers for saving me $$$.

      I'm pretty sure they released a 45 half pan set of all the colours, which is at Jackson's Art I think. They ship to the USA and you can switch to the $US option so that's really handy. There are some stores in Australia which are now selling individual tubes, but they are even more expensive than buying them as sets, so I just went with the wooden boxes because it worked out "cheaper" overall. 4:14 watch out when that happens. i've had that happen a lot with some colors and it's quite frankly shyte. it might not seem like much of an issue at first, but when you put down the color on the paper, the excess gum arabic will result in the paint slowly drying with a rubbery, shiny consistency that will not go away and shine through layers put on top

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  ปีที่แล้ว

      That is so true! I've experienced that as well, and I did my best to sop up excess gum arabic with a tissue before mixing the remains back into the paint. It's such a pain when paint splits like that - not just for these but other brands as well. And oil paints do this too sometimes....ugh!

    Been waiting for this :D Schmincke did release a dot card for these sets (a total of 40). I had trouble reactivating the volcano yellow from the dot card; leaving a drop of water on it helped but I did still have to scrub to get it to work :/ Only volcano red and volcano red are single pigments, so between that and the other granulating colours being available generally unless people really want a convenience mix it'd be simpler to grab the individual ones and use/mix when wanted. Nice options for highlights and drawing attention but maybe not so much as a limited palette option :)

    as i live in germany, i was lucky enough to be able to buy a few of the supergranulation tubes open stock in an art supply store (and here, they are cheaper than daniel smith and windsor and newton) and tbh i was pretty excited about heavily granulating yellow and red! green too. granulating blues are less rare i think, what with ultramarine and such, so i didnt buy one of those since i already had some. and while i agree that theyre not the easiest to work with, i think these paints definitely have their place, its just that using JUST them in a whole painting is probably doomed to failure, or at least a frustrating painting process haha.

    • @BeckyTregear

    Schminke is over rated. The prices are insane. Super granulating is definitely the latest gimmick. I agree with others who are saying we can mix a lot of those mixes ourselves why spend your hard earned money on difficult to work with weak pigments. I find Daniel Smith is doing the same thing with their primatek and mineral pigments. Tired of the "artist/professional" lines trying to make more money off us by limiting pigments we do want and serving up this stuff as new and exciting. I understand that some pigments go extinct because humans have used it all up but most are synthetic and replicable so why the hurry buy this before it's all gone. Bah! Creating urgency when it's not actually urgent. Anyway!!! I lava your camel! 😁 and Gandalf.

But someone has to review them, so here I am with all 45 tubes of them! 🙈 I am going to make a mega set with all of the colours and I hope they will make a pretty interesting palette. I do love Schmincke's general range of watercolours. I guess companies want to be raking in the $$ so we have to choose wisely (or foolishly in my case) as to which paints are worthy of purchase. ❤
