Hey Allan! So good to see you. I know this way of swatching is your longtime format, but it would have been nice to see larger swatches for these colors. Granulation happens best when pigments flow across wet paper freely (on a slant), and then are left untouched -- which is easier in bigger swatches. The more you move the paint with your brush, the less they will granulate -- because as they are trying to clump, you are smoothing them back out.
That's true and I agree. But i cant go away with the format. So I am actually considering of doing a separate swatching and sampling for each of the super granulation set.. to show more of the effect. There I'd probably make bigger swatches. 😊
I bought all of these. Some friends only help bring some items home for me as these are not available in the Philippines. Quite expensive, but i get them back, since i hand pour them in pans and sell them locally.
@@AllanJayQuesadahi, just want to let you know, lucky you. 😂 as of now Sep. 2024, super granulation are pure garbage. Out of 10 tubes, 2 are completely trash( I emptied the whole tube. It was just glycol, no usable part at all) 6 doesn’t granulate , and only 2 are “normal”. Normal being Not full of “separated pigment and glycol”, and can granulate. So those two sets were returned to Amazon. I have 4 other sets on the way. At this point I’m just curious how many of them would be “normal, how many are whole tube trash.
@oaktharas oh that's terrible! But i have actually experienced that, too. I bought a set of forest granulation for a friend. And turned out that her forest green was just binder. Only around 5%pigment. Felt like she was just pouring hony out of the tube. She also emptied the tube, yet still no thick pigment came out. Got it from Jacksons. After a few days, they replaced it with a new tube, sending it all the way to the Philippines. 😔 yeah, yours is still worse. Good thinking Amazon replaced it for you.
@@AllanJayQuesada no~~ Amazon’s two I just returned; got two from Jackson’s, Glacier and Shire. 5 out 10 are relatively normal, so slightly better. But given the very high price point, 50% loss isn’t really acceptable. And from my personal observation, the excessive binder is proabbly in there to create super granulation effect; but they need to “stay in”, once they have separated, even if I mix them back in with a toothpick, that tube can no longer granulate.
@@AllanJayQuesada you friend probably should have just returned .😅the reason I didn’t want replacement is because the chance of getting a completely normal set ( 5 of them all being normal) is proabbly next to none
Very nice review, thank you. I absolutely love how you put together your swatch cards, what a great way to put together a notebook not only of swatches but also having a small painting to see how they work together. Beautiful!!!
Hello Allan! Nice to see you again :) This is such an amazing video regarding about Schminke Horadam! As usual, I enjoy watching you review art supplies from Malaysia
Thanks for the wonderful review!! I would love to see a video of larger swatches by colour ( eg: all the greys, all the blues etc.). I am thinking of making a small palette for urban sketching and would like to focus on grey... Regardless, this review of the entire range is truly helpful!!
The best way to save money with Schmincke's 45 super-granulation colors, is to go only for their primary equivalents: the Galaxy set of 5, Volcano Yellow, Volcano Red, Forest Green, and Glacier Blue. Basically, you get the equivalents of the cool and warm primaries, and a payne's gray, a purple, and a green. These 9 colors can mix most of the rest of their colors. Price comes at just $63 online as of this writing, compared to hundreds of dollars if you get all their sets. Just mix the right colors, and save!
@@KobieK You don't need another yellow. Most stuff can be mixed with just these. Although there are some Desert yellows to pick if you want a cool one.

Hi Allan! I am a fan of your videos, especially because of the natural birds songs and rooster call :) I recently ordered some half pans (all the volcano and 2 more). Those were my first Schmincke and I am surprised how much work they need to reactivate (in comparaison with D Smith or Rembrandt or Sennelier I own). I put a drop of water on each and it seem to make the pigments separate in the pan. I will have to learn to appreciate them...
Hi Danièle. Thank you. I agree with your observation. The Super Granulation set is a bit harder to activate as compared much more to the regular Schmincke. Yes too some colors have pigments separating in the pans. 😊 some love it, some dont. But we can learn to love it. 😊
Thanks Allan. I have the galaxy and deep sea small tube sets. The more water the better the granulation shows. Thanks again for showing the swatches for all the super granulation range. Good to see you.💜
Yeah, i agree that they're a bit weak specially as compared to their usual colors.. perhaps it's a good idea to do comparison video with the dusk of VanGogh. 😍
I have one set, the tundra, and while they are beautiful they aren't very useful. I wound up putting together a palette of single pigment granulating pigments commonly used in the collection and appreciate it so much more. Not only can you mix similar colors, you can mix a ton of others by simply experimenting, some even more beautiful. You also have the individual pigments to use on their own or in combination with a basic palette. These supergranulating combinations are much better off used as an accent or special effect in a limited area of a painting. One use I did find is in a faux stained glass painting, they are quite lovely as individual panes of glass and the black lines give the needed separation. They also make beautiful backgrounds. They do not mix well, almost everything combines into a murky grey or brown. The two exceptions are the single pigment volcano red and yellow, however the texture of those two is really not pleasant, gummy and gritty.
100% agree with your comments! Why does Schmincke want to take all my fun away; why would I not want to be able to play with the mix? Schmincke is the Daniel Smith of Europe -- super extra with a bloated line!
Yes you're right specially agree these aren't meant to be mixed to each other. The 2 single pigments specially the yellow is not even strong enough for mixing.

I still dont understand why granulation and premade separating colors are so popular right now..... watercolor is known for smooth, transparent, luminous colors. Have a few single pigment colors that granulated is nice to have like ultramarine blue or cobalts, etc. And using themnin mixes to get beautiful, unpredictable effects is awesome and fun. But paying a premium for just a few pigments mixed with other in diff combinations and trying to sale it to us just makes no sense to me! When with about 5 colors added to your palette.....a few you prob already have....you can make any amd all colors you see here....
You are actually right and on point. But the way I see it, the reason why some people patronise these marketed mixes is simply because of 3 things; 1. They are too lazy to mix. 2. They don't want to experiment. 3. They have no idea about pigments and the codes and formula at all. It may seem simple, but to some, it is not. Like baking bread. If mixing the colors we need is the key, we only need Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow and maybe black. If our printers can maximize those 4, we possibly can too. But again, not easy for all.
Hi. Yes, i purchased all with my own money. most of these are from Jackson's Art in UK. I buy online. They can prove it. If there are instances companies give me paints, i always mention it. And i also have a store of paints here in the Philippines.
And as i have said in this video, i also re sell these paints by pouring them in pans. So there is nothing impossible here. I am a paint collector myself, and this Schmincke paints aren't even the only ones i have.
Please consider locking your white balance on your camera. Every time you move your hand, the colors shift, as the white balance of the camera changes. It's very difficult to understand how a color actually looks like if the WB keeps jumping. Every camera allows you to set and then lock the WB, and even if you shoot with your phone, there are third party video recording apps that can do that (e.g. Filmic Pro).
Thank you for pointing it out. I was thinking why the color shift happened in this video alot and never thought of the white balance. Thank you. Will find that setting on my camera. I'm using a Sony zv1. 🙏

mmmm. a bit sad. I just have a metal box of 40 granulaing colors
Why sad?
So easy so make videos like this if you get these fortunes donated for your channel....I doubt he purchased all himself
