I braided a horses mane and when I took it out and washed it and combed it out I felt like I lost a lot of hair. What is the best process for braiding and re-braiding?
Hair will shed naturally and if it is in a braid the loose hair will hang there until you comb it out. The other possibility is that you are having breakage. Each time I braid I try to section the hair differently, and alternate between long braids and running braids. Braiding does put stress on the hair, so it is best to try to change those areas of stress.
You're very welcome! He's 6 in this video. Not every horse's mane is going to grow this long. This is genetics, but you can at least minimize breakage in order to get the best mane possible from your horse!
@@ShadeTreeStables It takes quite a while... but the results pays off. I am trying to grow a long mane on a reformed thoroughbred and I'm getting so impatient for him to grow one like your beautiful horse. Thank you for Answering me.
Pretty much. My horse's mane is so long that if he has one day of turn out, it's a tangled mess. I wash and condition once a week, once it's dry it gets rebraided. Ideally it would probably be rebraided twice a week, but you know, time and all.. if I know he is going to be in for a day or two because of bad weather, I will leave it down. Sometimes in the winter if he's wearing a hood I leave it unbraided, but it still gets pretty tangled under there.

Would you mind messing me about what it is you have hanging that your horse is munching on. What do you have in it?
It's just a slow feed hay net. I think I got that one at smartpak. It's filled with grass hay.
Thank you. I've got a draft horse. She's extremely gentle. I hope she will like it. I'm going to try this.
What do you use for shampoo conditioner for him
Gr8 video. 🌻👍
Thank you! I'm not set on any one product. I've used Manely long, Cowboy Magic, Mane N' Tail, RioVista, and a Tea Tree shampoo

Do you keep your horses mane in a braid all the time?
