Of all the videos I've watched, Pauline just makes the best sense to me, and I'm about to start my first non-rag-quilt QAYG quilt. Back-to-back makes perfect sense to me because you're literally sewing the blocks together like you would a rag quilt, then just covering the raw seams with a sashing. Easy peasy. I'm just getting started on this quilt (Wallflower by Missouri Star Quilt Co), and I'm doing it QAYG, using Pauline's back-to-back. My background and back are a solid black (won't do that again). This weekend, I finished quilting my first block using a point grid quilting, then pinned the petals down, and am really pleased with it. Until I woke up this morning, apparently thinking this through in my sleep. The point grid lines very likely won't match up perfectly on the back! The only 2 solutions I can think of are to use sashing on front/back (I don't want to), or to do point grid on half the blocks, and echo quilting on the other half, alternating them throughout the quilt so they don't butt up against each other. In my mind's eye, I see the back showing a kind of checkerboard effect, rather than lines that don't match up. Now I also have to practice the echo quilting.
I met you at an Arizona quilt show 3 years ago and bought your book and sashing tools. I’ve been so busy working I was never able to dig into this awesome information. Now I have to time and my fingers won’t allow me to do big quilts anymore so quilt as you go is my new go to. Thank you so much for all the inspiration. Your quilts are beautiful.
Welcome back! I would love to come back to Arizona one day soon it would be great if we could meet up. in the meantime keep watching my videos as I have lots more coming for you. Cheers Pauline
I’ve just found you and wish I’d found you a long time ago! I’ve just used your back to back technique and I think I may never quilt a whole top ever again! Thank you so much xxx
Pauline I've purchased your 10 sashers and a 3 inch sasher. Along with your book. and I'm looking so forward to trying out all of these techniques. I've been watching on your videos. Thank you so much.
I absolutely love your tutorials and I love making quilts. I do agree it is quite hard machine quilting a large quilt on your sewing machine. I always have to hand quilt my quilts. I am new to your channel and I have just purchased your handbook today and I get it tomorrow....I'm so excited lol. I am very interested and excited to learn this quilt as you go method. Thank you for sharing and teaching everyone the joy of quilting. My grandmother thought me how to quilt when I was 5....when she passed away I inherited both of her antique singer machines....sad to say I only have ever used the 1.....the treadle suits I'm my bedroom and I'm trying to get the hang of it before I decide to start quilting with it haha. Thank you so much. God bless y'all.
Oh Amanda, I am thrilled you are learning from and enjoying my Videos. I know any one can learn to quilt no mater what age so long as we know the process and that it is easy to understand. I took up quilting many years ago I never owned a sewing machine or had every sewn a stitch in my life. My big challenge was that I had no one at all to teach me so I had to learn by my mistakes and learn from those mistakes and figure out a way to make it easy for myself. You can do this girl and I am hear to help in any way I can. Enjoy Pauline
Thank you Pauline for the video, I had purchased a lot of your tools at Toowoomba Quilt Show few years ago, now that I have watched your video I have more confidence using them.
Wonderful demonstration - got your sasher set a couple of years ago but haven't done much other than for binding quilts & some bias binding for topping decorations - am now inspired to 'go bigger' quilt-wise!
Hi Sue, it is so great to hear you have been inspired to 'go bigger'!! We would love to see what you create 🤗 glad that you have been finding your Sashers useful for binding and bias as well.
Thanks Pauline for this video. I attended one of your classes many years ago, bought your first edition book and sashing tools and this video is a good refresher for me. I use the tools mainly for bindings but will now try some sashings on my current QAYG project.
Pauline I have just found your video, I have your book and sasher tools which I had forgotten I had bought so now I will definitely be using them after watching the video.
Was wanting to make a start on quilting and got interested in the QAYG videos. Bought your book and the sasher tool set along with what I consider the best bias ruler, and the duo ruler and will try out on a crib quilt for starters.. So nice after watching the how to videos to refer to the book. Thanks for great instructions.
Hi Adele, thank you for such lovely feedback about our tools and QAYG techniques. We'd love to see photos of your project using our tools and techniques once finished :)
Hello Pauline, My table runner using your Between The Blocks method turned out great! I used contrasting colors...blue backing with green strips. Love it. I also just bought your set of 10 sashers today from Amazon. I don't know why I waited so long!!! I love your book and TH-cam videos. So easy to follow from your demonstrations. Thank you.
Wonderful video. Pauline you give precise and clear instructions. I will be buying your book and your sashing templates. I should have brought them ages ago!
I just finished a half-bed quilt using your technique. I needed a half-queen quilt because I am always cold and my husband is always hot. I love the way the quilt turned out, but wow it would have been hard to sew together the long rows if it had been a full quilt, with more rows being crammed into the small space to the right of the needle apparatus. I have only a small regular sewing machine, not a long-arm machine. Would one do hand-stitching if one were making a full quilt?
You can absolutely make a full quilt using your regular sewing machine! If you look through all of our videos, there are plenty of tips and tricks for doing QAYG and Controlled Quilting on your regular sewing machine 😊
Hi Linda, You can use any fabric for the sashings as my Sasher tools will work with all fabrics. I love using stripes for my sashings and bias. My QAYG book explains all the wonderful techniques you can do when making your quilts QAYG. Enjoy Pauline
Love the fabric you have used in this video. Can you give the name or fabric line of the fabric you used for the applique (paisley) quilt? Colors are beautiful!
Hi Sue, I am very pleased that you are enjoying my videos. I am sorry but I do not know the name or designer of that fabric , I have had in in my stash for a lot of years and I do not have any left to be able to trace it for you. Cheers Pauline
Hi Pauline. I have been watching many QAYG videos and just came across yours. The tools look like they would work great and I like your technique. I am making a quilt for our cabin and am wondering if the QAYG technique and tools can be used with flannel fabrics.
Hi Patty, I am glad you found my TH-cam channel and that you are enjoying my videos. Yes my QAYG techniques and Sasher tools will work with flannels just like they will with regular cotton fabrics. Have fun creating your flannel quilt for your cabin, I would love to see photos of your cabin and the quilt when you get it finished. Cheers Pauline
Ty soo much for this technique! Would I be able to connect Hunter's Star 1/4 Blocks using this technique in reverse?....In other words, the Blocks would be sewn Right Sides Together instead of Wrong, and then the Sashing would be put on the Back? I have seen people do this, but they use the Hoop Sister's technique of 1st cutting the Backing/Batting very very close to the stitching, then stitching the Blocks RST, then covering the Back with the Sashing. I am just wondering if cutting out the Batting/Backing like that is what makes those "Hinges" between the Blocks. So, maybe leaving the Batting/Backing in, like your technique does, might eliminate those Hinges? I have my 4 Quarter Blocks ready to sew together, but I am so torn on whether I should cut that Batting/Backing or not?
Hi , Sounds like you are making a stunning quilt. I would leave the batting there if it is not too bulky, but I think if you press the seams open then glue them down with the Roxanne Glue and press the seams once again to set the glue it should sit nicely for you once you put the sashing over the top of the seams. Good luck , cheers Pauline
Can you use Elmers School Glue and a Clapper as well to help the seam lay flat? I Hv heard that The Elmers Glue is inexpensive and works well...Sheila😶
Myron I don't know about Elmer's glue except that it is for paper, give it a go on a trial piece you need to know that it wont do harm to the fabric and that it will wash out of your project.
Hi Dawn, I have tried all the different types and brands of wadding with my QAYG techniques. The only batting I got the result I wanted was the Hobbs double sided fusible wadding , I get no bulk at all . I think if you use a thicker wadding I would grade it back so the sashing sits better. Hi Denise, I hope you everything is going ok for you in Miami and that you are staying safe and well. I do have a TH-cam video on my Back to Back QAYG technique. you can make the Sashings any size you want and any style. for example if you want your sashing to be 21/2" wide you cut the fabric 5" wide and put it through the 21/2" Sasher tool . you cut strips of backing fabric 3" wide and join a block to either side of the strip with a 1/4" seam , you then put the 21/2" Sashing over the cover strip. It is a very simple technique once you do it once it will all be easy from then on. Please let me know if I can answer any more questions. enjoy creating Pauline

You can put the sashing on the back of the quilt when joining GAYG but you will see the stitching lines on the front of the quilt where you stitch the sashing down. If you think about how you would be quilting the blocks and you were to quilt straight lines the stitching of the sashing will then look like on of the quilting lines. Enjoy
