I have never seen this live. Love it. Forever this has been my album when sitting down at the table for dinner with friends and family....love Dire Straits.
This is the opening track from the Alchemy concert, I whish I had been there, Mark was totally inspired here, incredible playing, I am glad you mentioned the killer Bass too, John Illsley never gets enough credit, but he is a great player. If you like more instruments, listen to Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield.
Sultans of Swing from the same concert will blow your mind for sure!! Here are other recommendations for some dire straits breathtaking performances : Brothers in Arms and Tunnel of Love from Wembley 1985 Brothers in Arms and Money for nothing from Mandela Concert 1988
Yea man, this was fire. That rhythm section in the first part of the song with the bass driving the song and the drums just staying in the pocket was really nice. Then Mark just doing his magic, superb!
Wonderful reaction... seeing the joy and admiration on your face takes me back to the mid 1980s when I heard this album for the first time. MK truly was and still is a master of the guitar and of storytelling through music, and I still listen to this album, and all the others regularly... and will do so 'til I'm gone. I saw the very first comment below, which states that you should not listen to 'Les Boys', which is the last track on the Straits' third album, 'Making Movies'. For the longest time it was not my favorite either, probably because of some of the BS social prejudices that were programmed into us back when that album was first released. I have since come to love that song for the same reason I have come to love all of MK's songs: musically, it's a superb piece, and he tells a story (which happens to be a true story) very well, and with humor. Listen to it or don't. I would never tell someone 'don't listen to this or that song'. But if you do listen to it, and are curious as to the backstory for the song, do a search here on TH-cam for the following: 'Mark Knopfler is telling a funny story / Les Boys perfomance (very rare!)' Anyhoo, again, wonderful reaction. It always heartens me to see someone come to appreciate MK and crew...
You are so right, the keys played such an important part of progressive rock .. so instrumental in providing the mood and atmosphere of the song. Very much missing in music these days. This song is one of the great often overlooked gems from Dire Straits. Glad you experienced it. You need to give "Skateaway" a listen.
You're digging into my favorite Dire Straits album, Commuique. The whole album is nothing but riff dealing amazingness. Check out "Portobello Belle", "Single Handed Sailor", "Lady Writer", "Where You Think You're Going" and "News". Mark Knopfler does our music better than we Americans ever believed possible. There's a group of recordings from Rockpalast you might consider. Flawless!
Angel of mercy the end lick on that guitar is just something out of a different universe, I'm convinced somebody somewhere has got it very very wrong about knopflers guitar style of play when they do the top guitarists and he's never in the top 20 never mind the top 10, he's 5 at the actual utmost least, they can stick their opinions up their arses
Hello brother, I thought I drop off another suggestion in case you're interested. "Dire Straits - So Far Away Live at Wembley 1985)" Mark Knopfler is most certainly one of the best guitarists of the 70's and 80's. (IMO) and he's just so fun to watch.
I agree but I would say from the 70's to the present! He's made lots of great music since the 80's...with Dire Straits (they were back together from 1990-1995) and solo. I saw him in concert in 2015 and thought he sounded better than ever.
It feels like the guitar adds a lot of irony to the narrative. What do you all think? Listen carefully to it. Mark is like a ventroloquist and his guitar is his other voice.
Your post makes no sense(google translate's fault I guess) The studio version is perfection, but as live goes, this is as perfect as you're ever gonna get! (as far as mastering, this is quoted from the Alchemy blu-ray; "this is a recording of execerpts of one Dire Straits performance, it contain no re-recording or overdubs of any kind")
@@tynzolav Hello, Oops, please excuse my bad English, I'm French. I didn't use Google. Maybe, it's "mastered" which doesn't make sense? I meant the way the song starts and not the quality of the recording or the way it was technically recorded. I don't know how you say "mastering an instrument" (knowing how to use it), or still, "sublimate an intro." In French, we say "maîtriser." 😊
I forget/ take for granted the alchemy version,( listened to it hundreds of times) these days o prefer the album version. It is much slower with an even more pronounced reggae vibe.
You should check out the Rockpop concert version from Dec 1980 on TH-cam. Much closer to the album version, and of course Pick was in the band at that time.I do like both styles, for different reasons. Watching a really tight band at the top of their game is awesome.
@@DavidG-u2k in what freaking universe is that even remotely true? Boring musically, and lyrically, an utter failure at sarcasm. Facts, and facts don't care about your ill-formed opinions
Yeah, I don't get the hate for Les Boys. It's another example of Mark's superb story telling combined with a musical style that reflects that story and where it's taking place. I can only assume it's the subject matter than some don't like.
mark knopfler is a very special guitarist. he is a rare guitarist with his own unique style. he deserves great respect.
sadly ,he is not respected in his country .
Absolutely.
I have never seen this live. Love it. Forever this has been my album when sitting down at the table for dinner with friends and family....love Dire Straits.
You MUST get this album!
Great reaction, and thanks to whoever requested this :) Such an amazing performance.
Mark has a new solo album (his 10th) coming out early April! Can’t wait! Still has it at 74.
A jazzy feel about that..beautiful with so much emotion and imagination
Love this performance. Very atmospheric.
This is my favorite Dire Straights recording. It’s sublime. One of the best songs and guitar solos I’ve ever heard. Puts me in musical paradise.
Audience is fully engaged....no cell phones back then! 👍

One of the greatest bands ever. Knopfler is a real heroe. Thank you!

Been one of my all time favourite live tracks for a long time.
First time hearing this. Soooo beautiful. Tears in my eyes. Just incredible.
Wish we could still get Dean Markley strings!
The talent it takes to create this musical tapestry is mind blowing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a vibe and a half.
From that synth breakdown, they’re just fluently showing off 💀🤗
Best (free playing) band ever👍🏻
Shawn-- from the same album (Alchemy) "Romeo and Juliet"-- it's a beautiful song 😍
Great point about music sometimes matching the complexity of emotions with a variety of instruments.
John Illsley probably the best bassist no one knows by name.
Not too many have heard of Terry Williams, but this is a showcase of his finest work!
I love the way you react to the main man Mr mark knopler no one plays guitar like knopler.
Amazing version, nice find.
Thanks for reacting to this much under rated piece, a superb performance as usual from Dire Straits.
He's a fookin guitar genius END OF 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Amazing from Mr knopler.
Mark said, "I wish I had learnt the Guitar properly. All I am is a Geordie Strummer" Do you realise Mark is actually left handed?
This was the first big concert and on the night 🌙 was the last 1983 till 1992 amazing 👏.
Its a lot faster beat than the original studio recording but still super smooth. Its a real drive your car song !
So amazing! So glad you played this! Mark as usual is great and the band is stellar! What a treat!!
Remember this is the guys just warming up the first song on alchemy amazing 👏
I love your reaction.

Great reaction video! Well done!
Masterpiece. Almost the best of Alchemy, very close to Sultans of Swing drums!!
Remember this is them guys just warming up.
I prefer this to the studio version, which I think has an even more reggae groove.
Great tune to drive to.
Dire Straits live is total fucking fire! 🔥
This tune is groovy AF!
I don't know if you know but when Sony introduced the cd its was dire straits they chose to launch it amazing 1985 .

you can even get a bullet from the peece - keeping uniform.
IF YOU LIKE GUITARISTS START LISTENING TO "DAVID GILMOUR" & (PINK FLOYD)
but the clean sound comes out from knopler fingers.
Once is not custom, I prefer the studio version, which is much more reggae-country in a subtle mix, and whose intro is better mastered.

Private investigations, brothers in Arms the long intro version with sting money for nothing!
When Mark played this solo he had a full "Ennio Morricone" style intro th-cam.com/video/wB7LNZyEpMk/w-d-xo.html

They lost some of their edge after Pick left.
Take me away....😊
Alchemy is a masterpiece! People who dont appreciate dire straits are simply not smart enough to see it!
Our host says he's never heard Dire Straits " miss "...true, DS doesn't miss, save one song....do not listen to " Les Boys "
And DS is better live
Yeah, I normally skip that one too. Still, nobody's perfect.
Les Boys is a great song, very much in the vein of Sultans of Swing lyrically.
