Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on TH-cam, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on TH-cam. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on TH-cam, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.

Mark was brilliant in this as expected, but also let's give a shout out to Alan Clark on the keys. The depth to his playing on this track was next level.
It was sad to hear Alan relegated to a background player on _Brothers In Arms._ Knopfler brought in Clark to get that big Petty-Springsteen sound from 1980 to '83, but he abandoned that for a straight-up pop sound.
Just a gentle reminder here. Mark has himself said, that when he found out he is into more song writing than learning the guitar, he kinda had to compromise between the two. Now keeping that in mind, that he writes all the tunes (Dire Straits, solo career and film music) plus he sings and plays the lead. I would say he is the most complete package of any bunch. Now go back to the "On The Night" live recording (if you want to listen official releases) and dig up Private Investigations, You And Your Friend, Brothers In Arms, Wild theme (from Local Hero movie). Just to see how versatile he is. I have seen him 20 times live during the years. He always arranges things differently; hence it is very difficult to suggest something specific.
Mark is my favourite guitarist, I only saw him the once with dire straits and 30 odd years later it’s still the best live performance I’ve ever seen. Enjoy their music it’s some of the best.
I only saw Dire Straits once at red rocks in Colorado. My favorite concert ever I’ve also seen Mark Knopfler four or five other times always incredible. Mark is the goat.
On another channel, I made the comment "I will never understand why Mark Knopfler is ignored in discussions about guitarists, especially talking about recognizable guitar sound". With 5.2K likes, you are definitely not alone in your feelings about Mark's guitar skills.

Telegraph Road, is one of best song's Mark ever wrote. I have been listening to him for over 40+ years & as a lot people have stated, he is a great guitarist,
one of the very best.
The legendary Pink Floyd guitarist and singer David Gilmour also likes Knopfler’s music. He even listed in an interview with Guitar Tricks Insider the 1978 Dire Straits’ self-titled debut album as one of his favorites of all time.
The record had the number 1 hit single “Sultans Of Swing” that remains as one of their most famous songs. Back in 1985, David Gilmour already told Guitar Classics magazine that Dire Straits vocalist and guitarist Mark Knopfler was an inspiration: “Mark Knopfler has a lovely, refreshing guitar style. He brought back something that seemed to have gone astray in guitar playing. These days I don’t listen to other people with the objective of trying to steal their licks.”
“Although I’ve got no objections to stealing them if that seems like a good idea. I’m sure that I’m still influenced by Mark Knopfler and Eddie Van Halen as well.”
The ex-Senior VP at Columbia Records, Paul Rappaport told in 2015 that in a conversation with David Gilmour, they were talking about how people buy the same gear that the Pink Floyd guitarist uses to try to sound like him. To explain that what really makes the difference to approach someone’s sound is to use the same technique they use, Gilmour recalled one time when Mark Knopfler only went to a charity show with his guitar and asked to use Gilmour’s rig and amps.
According to Gilmour it wasn’t necessary to make any changes in the gear. Knopfler plugged his guitar and he sounded just like Mark Knopfler, even using a different gear.
It was the "Easy Guitar Sketch" on the French and Saunders show (here on TH-cam) where Mark used David's setup - you can see him using David's red EMG Strat to play Money for Nothing. David uses a Clapton signature Strat to play Another Brick Pt.2 in the same sketch. They both come from a blues influence and have a real ear for melody and for leaving appropriate space in the music. Probably my two favourite guitarists for that reason.
Thanks for sharing these insights. Mark and David are amongst my favorite. Both unique respectively. And the emotions they evoke is without peer in my opinion. Telegraph road is just a magnificent piece of rock and roll music.
Some journalist once asked Prince how it felt to be the best guitarst in the world... He replied "Dunno, ask Mark Knopfler"
This guitar used at the beginning of the song is a National Style "O" - which is most famously used in the Song "Romeo and Juliet" and features on the cover of "Brothers in Arms" their biggest selling album.
Mark Knopfler is 44 on the Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists.
The Telegraph Road is a highway that runs through the suburbs of Detroit, Mark Knopfler was sitting at the front of the bands tour bus as the drove down it, at the same time he was reading a book called "Growth of the Soil" - The song is essentially about how the city grew up from a guy setting up a farm to a Metropolis (in the first part) - and then the 2nd part was about another guy who can't find a job, how the system had failed him, and how he wanted to leave this city (with his partner) taking the Telegraph road.
Probably the most poetic lyrics in all their catalogue. "Running every red light on memory lane" is something I think about a lot.

A Fender Stratocaster with the pickup selector in the 2nd position will get you in the zip code of that early Dire Straits guitar sound. Fingerpicking gets you a bit closer to Mark's thing. The rest is all his approach and sensibility. It's sweeping and cinematic and instantly recognizable.

I love Sultans of Swing and the live performance was a amazing but if I am honest this performance is my favourite, maybe my favourite performace of all time. It is a brilliant composition with a great message in the lyrics. I love the way I get to see how brilliant the keyboardist is in this and the end of the song is out of this world, not just the guitar solo which is genius, of course, everybody throws their soul into that finale.

Now you are getting hooked, right? Mark Knopfler is for me one of the best rock guitarists ever. I never was a Pink Floyd fan and Jimi Hendrix was before my time, but I have witnessed quite a few guitarists in my life, but no one is as gifted and recognizable as Mark. You should check out live version of Brothers in Arms, Romeo and Juliet or Private Investigations. These are slower pieces in which his wide skill set is impressively on display.

I, like some of my friends, consider Telegraph Road the most beautiful piece of music in history, I'm sorry that many don't know it because of its duration and consequently never played that we eat what we are given and not we choose it more. Thanks Mark, always.
I loved seeing you have tears while listening to Dire Straits. Its a sure sign the band or artist has done their job and produced a wonderful product that ellicits emotoins. I cry tears of joy to this song as its been my number one favourite ever since they first released it. This version is even better. True masters of their art will bring out those tears of sadness or happiness and us the listener should be willing to let them flow. It shows you really appreciate it.
Hard to believe that was over 40 years ago and theyre all in their mid 70,s now.
There are 2 keyboardists up on stage, the main one is Alan Clark and hes classically trained and i have seen him have to handle 9 keyboards thru a concert. Hes on left of screen, the other keyboardist is on right of screen and i hate to admit but ive forgotten his name.
His finger picking style is unusual especially seeing he uses electric guitars mostly, and hes actually left handed but taught himself to play right.

I think it's a matter of preference really, I easily prefer this song most out of the Alchemy tour.
It's about tone when your body tells you who's your favourite guitarist. And I think Angus grunt is just as emotional as David soaring. Mark is a master. Like the greats. He tickles your neurons.

One more thing...this is a commentary on the effects of 'progress' on rural land and towns. Mark wrote this while on a long tour bus trip North from Detroit along (you guessed it) Telegraph Road. He had seen the same metamorphosis occur in England, but never really gave it a thought until that trip.
Mark Knopfler is my favourite guitarist and is an absolute genius and I don’t throw that term around at all. His playing is an amalgamation of several genres and when he dials it up he’s untouchable.. with just his fingers, no pick!!! Though Mark is a wizard, this performance highlights absolutely every band member as they are a unit completely in sync. I watch this performance every day, every-single-day as it brings me so much joy. I’m really happy you covered it bro. I would sell my soul to be at this show. No joke.
Thanks for taking one of my recommendations (I'm sure this got a number of them). An absolutely stunning performance of this epic. A top notch guitar package from Mark is always to be expected, but the amazing and complex keyboard work here by Alan Clark deserves special accolades. You'll find every track available from the Alchemy tour is far beyond the studio version. Keep 'em coming.
Alchemy Live is such a ride. EVERY song is gold to start with , the extended guitar solos and music are just bonus after bonus. Pulling up the lyrics is always good for me cause this song (to me) is really great . Keep rocking :)

You have to listen to Sultans live
Not just Detroit, but the industrial Rust Belt, told in the story of a drive from Detroit to Toledo on U.S. 24, which is called “Telegraph Road” along that whole distance. I used to live about a mile away from Telegraph Road in Toledo.
The guitar at the start is a Style O 14 fret made by National. One of the reasons Knopfler's sound is different is that he doesn't use a pick, just his fingers.

Mark Knopfler has that sound because he finger picks he doesn't use a plastic pick when he plays which allows him to hit more notes with his strum hand..The only other popular rock guitarist I know of who does that is Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac but the two of them play very differently.
Yes it is a unique sound. Jeff Beck also mastered this technique.
Mark still sounds like Mark even when he uses a pick though. He plays most of Expresso Love and Tunnel of Love with one on the Alchemy concert.
@@lapelcelery42 I was unaware he used a pick. Not surprised he sounds similar to his usual work though. Great guitarists sound distinctly different than anyone else. My other 2 favorites Jerry Garcia and David Gilmour are the same way. Even when playing pedal steel those two sound like thenselves and nobody else. I think once Knopfler developed his sound by finger picking he probably developed a way to sound the same while picking normally for some songs. Thanks again for the additional info

@@lapelcelery42 Truthfully hard to have a favorite between those 3 but forced to pick I'd go Garcia. Not only are his leads melodies apart from that of the song but he plays totally different leads to the same song every time he plays it, something that no other musician in rock does. Since almost every live show they have ever done can be found on the internet their is literally hundreds of different leads to every song the Dead have ever played. According to Garcia's wife Jerry could see the notes as different colors he could play I think you would really appreciate Jerry.

I was at the NEC Birmingham England for this tour.
The three who have NEVER been copied: Jeff Beck, Jeff Healey, and Mark. Now my favourite of all time is Jimi Hendrix- for me he was first to explore. But BEST is one of the first three- each of whom has unique fingering processes. Jimmy Page ceded the title to his friend since age 13 or 14 Jeff Beck. Doubts? "Cause We've Ended as Lovers" Live at Ronnie Scotts (with Tal Wilkenfeld).You know Jeff Healey has to be good when he asks George Harrison's approval to do The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" gets George and ELO's Jeff Lynne for backing vocals. There is a very good analysis on You Tube by a music teacher, who explains that it's about the development of Telegraph Road over the decades , with the ups and downs caused by economic crises at various times. Mark wrote the piece after travelling along the road, and remembering a book that he had read, written at the beginning of the 20th century . The road was in the US. The band is British of course. Thanks for sharing. One of the things I like about Mark Knopfler’s style is how clean and pure his sound is, no distortion or effect pedal trickery, just pure talent on strings. Check out Tommy Emanuel if you have a chance, he’s an absolute wizard on a steel string acoustic 👌🏽

It's about the start, growth, and demise of Detroit by government. SULTANS of Swing & Telegraph Road are the rock Classics of the Classics. You all must check out the lyrics to bring Marks music to the next level. He makes the cosmos better and even serious or sad songs still leave you uplifted and happy. Incredible
Although I love all Dire Straits songs, this has always been my favourite. Second to that is Private Investigations. Both of a 5 track album. Those 2 tracks are so long that they took up the whole of side 2 of the album. Love over Gold was the album and is still a regular play. Awsome

Agreed, Mark should be in that 'Great Guitarist' list. And so should this guy, check it out. Camel, 'Ice' live, lead guitarist Andy Latimer. He and Stevie Howe (from Yes) compare favourably regarding 'passion' when playing!

It was great what you said about the greatest guitarist. I would rather listen to Mark then Hendrix, or just about anyone. I don't know what the criteria is used to qualify as the greatest Guitarist, But listenability should be included.
