What I love is his restraint... he stays within the unique scale of the song... doesn't stray beyond it... works with it and within it... there's no baggage no excess I think this is Mark at the very pinnacle of his technical & artistic abilities... a master class
@@sillysausage4549 Yea free speech is so overrated... and we could all do with less silly sausages bleating nonsense when they have no understanding what they are sausageing about
I wouldn't say songs with G sharp minor, C sharp minor, F sharp, B sus4 have been done a billion times - and those chords do give the song its distinctly melancholy feel. We're all trying to be kind to each other here as we simply enjoy the music. I like the comment about Mark's restraint - totally agree. Even his stage manner is totally understated.
Brilliant iconic song played by one of the elite guitarists on the planet. Such powerful emotions and an enormous ecstatic live audience. Musical perfection right here.
Love your comments about Mark being emotional in this song. I have always said that at the end he puts his hand on the mic and looks like he wants to say something, but he can't get the words out, so he remains silent. The silence says more than his words could have. Playing this for Nelson Mandella was a big thing for Mark and he looked emotional all thru it. I think this version of the song is the best. Thanks for reacting to it.
My favourite version of this beautiful song. The fading of the haunting wind instrument at end, the moment where MK seems about to speak (but looks too overcome by emotion) and the rage in the guitar to finish. Masterpiece.
You do realize that a performance like that is rarer than haleys comet, you'll be lucky to see one in your lifetime, fortunately this was caught on TV, and you know when knopfler stops singing you know all hell is going to break loose on that guitar,, AMAZING 👌🏼 👴🏼 🎸
Simply on another level. So emotional and so few guitarists and storytellers can make that emotion spill out live. The lyrics are also on another level. What a band, what a legacy and what a damn fine reaction. And yep, Eric Clapton on support. Amazing.
At exactly the 10:00 minute mark, if you listen very carefully you can hear Eric Clapton ask the keyboard player, "is he ok?" (referring to Mark). What . What a magnficent tribute to our troops and to Mr. Mandela.
I think all of us have, deep inside of us, a sorrow for those that have sacrificed their lives for the good of all. It’s engrained in our souls, and Mark taps into that golden sorrow with this song. Powerful stuff.
This concert was a huge deal around most of the world. There's hundreds of leaders around the world including Princess Diana who is a huge fan of Mandela & Dire Straits. Along with Live Aid '85, this was Dire Straits defining moment... And he nailed it again.
This was not even the only time, but Mark also played rythym guitar for Eric around the same time at a few concerts th-cam.com/video/GHY0pGRh0ok/w-d-xo.html
That is how you recognise rallye great musicians. They have lot of respect for each other and don't need to be in the main focus. They just love to make music
Really the only bad Mark Knopfler song is the one you haven't heard. If you live long enough they all have a time and place they resonate. This was 34 years ago and the man has not stopped making great music yet.
You seem unaware that Mark & Eric were/are good friends and played side by side with each other frequently over the years. No battling for top dog between them as both are on an equal footing and clearly respect each other. Music is subjective. I❤MK
Why would you think I'm unaware? I've been a Dire straits and Clapton fan for over 40 years... I know exactly why Eric was playing rhythm with them that night.
@@SashanMusArt definitely not, I'm one of MK's biggest fans, he's a big part of why I picked up a guitar 40 odd years ago and learned to play. You're all good I'm not offended. My initial comment about Clapton was actually scathing about EC not MK but it was just tongue in cheek. I love them both
So many great DS tracks. Anything from the live album Alchemy are outstanding. Tunnel Of Love, Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, Once Upon a Time in the West. Also remember that, to date, mark has released 9 solo albums after he split DS. Plus loads of Film music. the catalogue is considerable. If you want another emotional song listen to th-cam.com/video/rH6ZW7OLhkE/w-d-xo.html
Part of his emotion pertains to Nelson Mandela... maybe the best- ever human being sitting in the stands scrutinizing your every tiny move... gotta be tough to act normal. Nervous much? Take care, Phil- peace, love and bellbottoms.
😓 It would have been nice if Mr. Mandela could have been present for this concert but unfortunately he was still imprisoned and not released for another 2 years.

Thanks Mark..for tuning in..comments appreciated

The moment where he thinks about playing something and realises that doing nothing is the correct choice - master

Thank you for not pretending this was your first time hearing it (as loads of reactors do). Great reaction, very genuine and I agree with every word.

This is a true gem.
Germans best to the World .
A Hamond everytime kick me to tears ,
I can't really think of a performance of such true emotion. It is as if his voice is failing him and only the guitar can truely express his feelings.

This is just epic the Pensa is almost in tears, gives me goosebumps every time
This song hits real hard

He sure did..this song always hits me hard
He caresses the guitar as he gently embraces the lost souls who will never be born.
How many Guitarists could get Eric Clapton to play Rhythm guitar for them?
This was not even the only time, but Mark also played rythym guitar for Eric around the same time at a few concerts

That's an awesome comment. And, so true!

Great Reaction! It's an emotional piece. It hits me every time. Very good version is this also.
Beautiful and respectful review man. It is quite the track.
thanks for tuning in and for the comment..
Well said. We are trained to kill each other. Year after year, war after war.
Great reaction thanks man🫶🏽
Awesome reaction
MASTERPIECE !!!
GREAT REACTION !!!
💥🎵🎸🤟🔥😜
Once Upon a Time in the West - Alchemy Live is awesome
Great reaction, thanks :)
Thank you too!
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
For me the stand out from this performance is mark knopflers restraint, he is brilliant but keeps it well under control.
His rhythm guitarist on this was Eric Clapton.... lol
- How good are you on guitar
- Eric Clapton plays rhymes behind me
solo from sultans of swing in this same concert

33 years in April
I completely disagree. There are two Mark Knopfler songs that I haven't heard, and I think they're both brilliant. So you're wrong!
You know you've attained some level of greatness when Eric Clapton plays rhythm guitar for you.

@aaronherbison7316 Apologies if I offended you, just got the impression you were being a bit scathing toward MK.

Gets me too, Best wishes to you mate.
I believe the person who is supposed to be singing is actually a soldier who is dying himself and is saying farewell to his brothers in arms. 14:40

personally, I think live on the night 92 is the best version of this song. its absolutely incredible
