Jeep JL Wrangler Tire Carrier for Oversize Spare : EVO Heavy Duty Tire Carrier Installation

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 พ.ย. 2024
- Soon after installing a heavy 37" spare on the factory tire carrier of our Jeep JL Wrangler, Cindy and I had a myriad of people declare that we were for sure, going to jack up our tailgate. Of course, they said they saw it on social media and so it had to be true. I literally had guys trolling me about it on TH-cam and demanded that I admit, we would bend or break our tailgate in 6 months or less. It was just nuts! Well, 8 months after the fact - I'm happy to say that our tailgate was still holding up just fine and without any bending or breaking of any kind. However, I'd be lying if I said this setup was a perfect solution. As some of you know, we spend an enormous amount of time bombing across the desert and hard hits would in fact cause the tailgate to move just enough, to make an annoying knocking sound. Needless to say, this was something we wanted to address and did so, with an EVO Tire Carrier. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you get to see to install, one on your Jeep JL Wrangler. Thanks for watching and we hope you find our video to be helpful.

To help hold the door in place, I've used wooden wedge shaped window shims. Adjust the wedge shims to fill the gaps before you start and tape them together once you have a good pre-load on the shims. Then if they do squeeze a bit while doing the job, just tap in another one or two wedges into the gap to adjust the gaps as required. Being wood also helps with not scratching the finish.
Couldn't you just do one hinge at a time?
@@LarryRichelli The hinges may be installed individually, but the carrier piece that actually attaches to the door is a one piece unit with both the upper and lower hinge points on the same unit. BOTH hinges will still have to be removed before installing the single carrier unit/piece. You will have more trouble and lose more time trying to line things up. As you will have loosen both hinges to get them lined up, while trying to hold up the carrier piece at the same time. Causing even more possibility of the door moving. It's best to have the carrier unit attached to the hinges making sure they are already lined up. Loosely install with everything together until ALL the bolts can be installed. Then tighten it all down equally after all gaps have been adjusted or checked that they did not move.
I’m not really interested in the EVO carrier but I still enjoyed the video. I appreciate your attention to detail.
Thanks, we're glad to hear it :)
I installed the equivalent of this on my JK a little over a year ago, holding a 37" on a steel wheel. Works great, no rattles. Only issue are the cheap bicycle brake pads used as bumpers. I made some out of HDPE with carriage bolts. I'm very happy with it.
Yet another time I wish Eddie's shop was just around the corner for late night hang outs. Good stuff!
LOL!! It could be fun for sure :)
Wow!!! Big job, but that looks super clean and functional! Those welds are superb and I dig that Milwaukee 3/8” drive. You deserve a few cold beers after that job!
LOL!! Definitely a lot of steps but not really that hard.
Who needs instructions when you have Eddie!
LOL!! Thank you. You're too kind and I can only hope that our videos will help out others. :)
James is right, you're videos helped me swap rubicon suspension on my sport. Tons of detail and torque specs along the way made it much easier. Doing things along I tend to second guess myself so it made a huge difference! @@wayalife
@@supercharged00gtp Awesome. We're so glad to hear we've been able to help you help yourself :)

I'm so glad you did this video because my EVO tire carrier showed up today...
I'll watch it a couple of times tonight and get going in the morning.
Thanks Eddie!!!
Thanks for showing how to remove the interior trim piece that holds the subwoofer. I watched 7 videos on aftermarket tire carrier installation, and no one showed it!
Happy to hear we were able to be thorough in showing how to do this install and that it was helpful to you.
Great video as usual. And considering you guys were in such a rush to get it all done before SEMA, it’s so awesome that you guys made so much effort to fit it all in.
It was an exhausting few days for sure.
Only takes from dawn til dusk! Another awesome professional video! Wow that was way more in depth than I imagined. Finished just in time for dinner!
LOL!! Actually, I did almost half a dozen installs that day. Glad you found the video to be informative :)
@@wayalife you're the best jeeper! I just noticed it was nearly dark when you finished is all. I never doubt your expertise! I appreciate that you take the time to respond to your viewers! Thanks and hope to see you on the trail!
My pleasure. I just wish I had someone to help me out back when I first got started over 2 decades ago. :)
@@wayalife You don't look old enough to have been driving two decades ago! As with all the other comments I will say terrific videos.
@@ksb2112 LOL - flattered that you would say as much. And really, it's more like over 3 decades but doing this Jeep thing as serious as I am now is over 2. My son will be 29 in December 😁
Nice install would love to hear a long term review as mine ( different brand) started to vibrate and then it seemed to loosen up and won’t retighten. But this EVO looks beefed up to hold 42” just fine!
"And maybe a 40" tire in the future".. That sounds GREAT! Can't wait to see it happen!
LOL!! To be clear, it may be a while but only because we're getting a Gladiator.
A gladiator is a nice choice too!! I think you have a great channel, keep it up!!
Looks solid and very high quality , i’ll be looking for one in the future
Once again, another great video. Eddie I would love to see a video tour of your garage and what tools have been most valuable to you when it comes to working on your jeep. Your garage is next level. Show that bad boy off!!!!!!
LOL!! Fair enough. I'll try to do a tour of it once the snow starts to melt.
Great video. And I know it's been in its own videos, but that blue CJ is perfect.
Thank you. Jane is without question, one of our favorites.
Your a fine hand my friend. Enjoy your work, we own a 2018 JL Ruby, stock so far.
EVO + you’re install....the best!!
LOL - thank you :)
Great Tire Carrier, but guess what, at age 69 I struggle even lifting my 26x14x37 tires. What is NEEDED is a “Spare Tire Lift Jack” to remove heavy big tires from the tire carrier. This would be a HOT selling item!! Even young guys would buy one. I would buy one right now to save my back. See if you can get an engineer to design one and bring it to market. Hint: it would be a scissor-lift.
Awesome install great product and as always top notch editing. Great job thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed our video and found it to be helpful :)

Don’t know if the question was asked but were you able to reuse the covers for the back up camera? I noticed that you skipped that on install.
@@StayOnIt @Garage Nerd Yes, but not without a lot of work cutting up the factory cover.
The evo tire carrier is very good. Can be a bit noisy in the cold. But I have no regrets about mine on my JL. The only thing about it was. The third brake light mount that was included was mounted with the small Torques screws for the camera. And mine they ended up getting tired out and then stripped out after awhile on bumps. I had to get a after market third brake light mount for it. it does takes a bit more time then you would think to install. Great video!!
Agreed about the 3rd brake light. As you'll notice, I didn't even bother to install their bracket. I instead installed a Mopar relocation bracket. As far as noise in the cold goes, I can't say that I have any and it's been down in the 20's here.
Amazing channel and excellent jobs, here from Puerto Rico!!!!
Thank you! :)
Nice I used popsicle sick s and tape to keep the door from moving and sucking up when you put the hinges in seemed to work good
Awesome 👍
I was waiting for this install video. Thank You so much for uploading it.
You guys are the best!!
Awesome, glad we could be of help :)
I'm glad the dealer ( York Prescott ) did all that for me when they did the Fox lift, and the larger tires...
Super waylife congratulations very good result thank you for your video here in paris french I love them I've looked a thousand thank you to you guy very natural and friendly 👍😉✌🏻
Thank you so much for that :)
I installed the Evo tire carrier. First thing I'll say is that it comes with shims for the hinges that bolt inside the jeep so you can align your bolt holes as needed. In my case I taped and shimmed the door (with wood wedges) and I needed to use both shims on the bottom bracket to get it to sit higher/ align with the holes. After installing the tire and testing it out, it's pretty obvious to me that the door settles downward when opened. This creates a fairly hard close as it's coming to the jeep a little low every time. Everything is snug so it seems like I need even more shimming on the lower bracket. The shims given were at least 1/8" stacked up so it looks like i might need a 1/4" total of shimming on the lower hinge. This leads to me to believe that either you all should start off with the Carrier sitting a little higher than the tailgate bolt holes or maybe I just have a tire carrier that's a little off. Another comment i will share is that the spacers when bolting the hinges to the tailgate don't cover up all of where the existing one was. This leaves a little bare metal. This is not too big of a deal for me but some of you might care. I'm sure some touch-up paint could fix it up good enough. If you look hard at the end of the video you can see what I'm talking about. It shows up more visible on my Jeep because it's red.
I just installed my Evo carrier today and I used one shim on the lower hinge. With the tire, the tailgate closed perfectly. After the tire was added, it dropped on the open side - probably between 1/8 - 1/4". I adjusted the door catch, but that's not the solution. I'm not looking forward to trying to get that second hinge spacer on, especially as I know it won't be enough. Any suggestions on how to slide that 2nd spacer in with out un-installing the carrier?
I'm actually thinking I may loosen all the bolts that attach the carrier to the tailgate surface (leave all th thing bolts tight) and lift up on the tailgate with the hope that there is a little play where those 12 bolts pass thru and then tightening them in that new slightly changed position???? fingers crossed!!
As for the bare metal showing - I have that too, it sucks - but I will paint it with touch up paint. The camera feels a little exposed and I'm not crazy about the 3rd brake light holder. I have an amazon LED circle coming next week that goes behind the wheel. Lastly, the gaps left where the hinges pass thru are ugly. Need to figure out if they bother me enough to come up with a fix.
Don"t know if you still look at these old vlogs but I had a question. The tire carrier has a lot of beef with monster brackets and such so the strength of the carries is not a question. The question is in the mounting point on the inner fender. I would think that over time you would get a little twist in the tailgate or small wrinkles in the mounting point on the inner fender on the body. A large wheel sticking out that far going down a lot of bumpy roads would apply a lot of torsion. The tailgate latch won't stop the torsion but give the gate a place to pivot, albeit a small amount. Over the span of years I would think the mounting point where the hinges attach would develop cracks etc. How has it held up??? Just got my 2dr JL and am either going to build a tire carrier bumper or install a tailgate hinge system like this... By the way I am in Henderson Nv. and would love to see your rigs. You seem to have a bunch of diversity.
All I can say is that so far so good and even after over 5 years of hard use. Of course, it is critical to adjust the tire carrier so that it presses firmly against the tailgate mount as that will mitigate any jiggling of the spare and that is ultimately what causes damage.
“CAUTION: Extra second pair of hands NOT included in the kit” 😂😂😂😂. Awesome job and awesome video like usually.
LOL - that's too funny!! Truth be told, you can install this without a second pair of hands but it definitely helps to have them for that one step.
Nice install, thanks for a great video.
So glad you found our video to be informative :)

Great video, really neat style EVO came out with for that setup.
Nice carrier. Nice how to video. Safe Travels Brother and God Bless!

On the new JL, is there a dedicated oil pressure gauge or the dumb idiot light.
If the latter, is there a vehicle specific a pillar pod for a oil pressure gauge install.
Or maybe you could do a video on this.
You can change the settings on the EVIC to show a true oil pressure gauge. You can also set your off road pages to show all the gauges.
Nice to see videos like this. Congrats

Nice tire carrier. What are your plans for the third brake light?
Actually, we are running a Mopar 3rd brake light relocation kit now. The EVO tire carrier does come with a bracket but I didn't really like it.
@@wayalife Any pictures or videos showing this?

I would call Off Road Evolution as they can get it for you. Please tell them you heard about it here :)
Great video. It was all I needed to install my EVO on my 2019 JL. I was wondering...My camera had a locking cover with the stock tire rack. It doesn't attach to the EVO. Is that something I need to find a solution for or can I leave it open like you did on the video? One other, the new hinges leave a gap on the body where the stock hinges did not. Is that something I need to resolve living in the northeast and all the moister? What do you think? Thanks again!
Have you found a solution for these gaps. I just installed on my new 392. As of now I hate this tire carrier. If you lift up on the door it picks up 1/2” to 3/4”. Doses your do this? Also my camera looks like crap sticking out and no way to mount 3 break light.
another great video. the more i watch these, the more i want my own JL unlimited Rubicon. but, i don't see that happening. :(
Nice job Eddie, remember lift with your legs not your back
LOL - yes, need to keep that in mind.
Hi Wayalife😁.
Great video. I've been contemplating for weeks on what to use to mount my spare tire 35s ( approx. 96lbs) on my 2018 JL and still keep my camera. Right now my spare does not clear the bumper. I've seen the EVO but I'm not a big fan of it visually for what I want. I don't want a bumper mount either for reasons you have mentioned in other videos. I've been recommended the Mopar reinforcement kit (plate). And getting a relocation bracket to raise the mount. Also, I've been told the RC relocation bracket should be good enough as well (no Mopar reinforcement plate needed). So basically I'm all over the place on what to get. I don't rock crawl .....just light off road and every day use. I would love to hear your opinion. Thanks
What I would recommend is that you do in fact give the Mopar tire carrier a look. It should address what you need and do it well. I would NOT recommend that you install an RC relocation bracket by itself. It will cause your spare to act as a lever and will rock your tailgate. This will be something you can hear when driving over bumps.
Another beautiful job done well
Thanks, we appreciate it :)
The dominic toretto of the Jeep world.
Not sure what you"ll do with your 37s when you upgrade to 40s but I'll drive out and take them off your hands if your not looking for a lot...my budget is shot after the lift and the winch, but I still want 37s for some diff clearence
@wayalife you said in the beginning you have to set the tire height before installing, is that true? Or have they updated it? Seems like a HUGE hassle if you change your mind or tire size later...
I have the Mopar reinforcement (if you want to call it that?) and it sagging with my kmc 231s and 37” Nittos 😩
Yeah, you heard right. It is a bit of a pain but so far, I haven't felt a need to make any changes.
I had to remove my tiny camera too for dv8 spare tire relocation bracket only to find it caused the camera to aim to the sky. Flipped it over, no difference. Wasn't happy with that. 16:03
I'm not trying to be nit picky here but...it looks like the door now sags when opening it with the evo carrier installed? Also did EVO provide anything to cover up the bare metal spots on the tailgate under the hinge? Those spacers they provided leaves those little corners showing bare metal. I'm not sure if the outer sheet is alum or steel(i thought the inside was a mag skeleton for strength). Always loved evo products but those hinges look cheap and loose :( As always...great video!
P.S. That grille yellowing yet? lol seems like you got a good one ^.^
EVO now provides shims to eliminate the sag you see. However, I was able to get rid of the sag by adding some preload to the tailgate. Also, the tailgate has an aluminum skin.
Oh, no yellowing.
@@wayalife sounds good on all fronts!
@@wayalife What about the camera cover?
How did you cover the one torn sticker on the inner bottom gate hinge?
I'm a bit surprised you didn't paint those bare metal spots first before bolting up the new tire rack
If you mean the bare spots on the tailgate, it's not bare metal and even if it were, the metal is an aluminum.
Hey Eddie, just installed mine today and used your video as my guide! Thank you! I have to somehow adjust the open side as it has dropped once the tire was mounted. Please explain to me "how" you "preloaded" the tailgate if you could. I need to go back tomorrow and start adjusting! Thanks good man!
Your tire carrier should have come with shims to help create preload. Mine didn't come with them as I have a very early version of it. But, what I did was lift up the handle end higher that it needed to be before tightening the hinge bolts.
Looks great! Thanks again for a great video👍
You're welcome :)
Super video
At 14:13 you speak of the Energy Suspension spacers you used in conjunction of the offset spare carrier. What model# did you use. Seems the Jeep custom shop who modified my jeep overlooked such an important part. Appreciate your help.
I think these are what you're looking for amzn.to/3lHB6Dl
How is the tire carrier holding up 3 years later?? What would you now suggest for a tire carrier? Thank you… love your content!!!❤
Honestly, it's holding up great.
You make everything look easy good stuff you could probably disassemble your Jeep an put back together in a hour video lmao as always be safe

Rubber bump stops are a bicycle brake pads LOL
dhstube Came to point out the same thing. You could customize your bumpstops…
Thanks , now I know what to buy
Awesome :)
Did mine last week (Evo TCarrier) Takes a while but came out great! However, I didn't add anything between the carrier and the door for protection against rubs, paint scratches etc. Are you concerned about that at all? (The carrier against your painted door?) Thought of taking mine off just enough to put something between in hopes of minimizing scratches. Thanks and great vid!
Ok I'm about decided I want a JL... I love your videos and have a request. I'd love to see you do a video showing what you would or wouldn't order from the factory if you had a time machine or were going to order another next week. I know you love the heated seats, but could you live without other factory options? Wish you'd ordered something you didn't? Most of us who watch your videos will be upgrading stuff so we'd value your opinion. I can't be alone on that. I was waiting to see the truck but I'm not sold on wheelbase so I'm ready to finally go in debt again!
Hmm, that might be something we could do. I'll see if we can work it into our schedule :)
Wayalife That would be cool!
Now I’ve ordered it... too many things to upgrade!
I just use a wood wedge under the door on that side instead of tape with one piece of tape just as a marker to see if anything moved.
Luv your instal videos.
Thank you. Our only hope is that they'll help others like yourself out.
Another great video
Thank you
I’m going to need to raise my spare as my parking sensors are now seeing it as it’s a larger size.
What line of work are you in? Jeep/vehicle repair? Excellent videos and explaining the work you're doing?
Truth be told, I used to be an architect a long long time ago. Been other things since then too including a graphic designer and web developer but Jeeps have always been in my blood and I've simply been doing this for a very long time. Well over 20 years.
@@wayalife That's awesome. I was a project manager for an architect for almost 20 years and now in construction management. Loved Jeeps since I went with my dad to buy a new CJ7. Now I have a CJ5.
Very cool :)
I would have like to have seen loctite or nylon nuts to be sure nothing comes lose, especially the ones you can't access after install.
also, would it be worth painting the spots where the factory hinge came off the tailgate since there is no paint seal there after you remove the hinge?
It might look great, but I can see the gate drop half inch or more when you open it...the carrier is doing nothing to hold the weight of the tire, its all on the latch. I hope you can adjust it.
if not, its going to cause you problems down the road.
Thanks for sharing.
Nothing is stopping you from using locktite. As far the spots go, the skin of the tailgate is aluminum and I can assure you that you're not looking at raw metal. Even if it were, it's not like it's gonna rust. Regarding the drop, EVO now provides shims to correct for it. That being said, I was able to correct it by adding some preload to the tailgate.
Love your Vids man!!
Thank you, we're so glad to hear it :)
I know your very busy but I hope I’m lucky enough to get some help.Im looking to put a lift on my jk and only want 35” tires.I wanted the teraflex st3 with falcon shocks or mopar 3-4”.can you tell me if these are good choices or is there something better?I love the channel and the snow wheeling was awesome.I live in north east PA.!!
You're in luck! With 35" tires, I would recommend that you just run a 2.5"-3" lift at MOST. Anything more will be way too much and in addition to throwing off your center of gravity, you'll have to address a LOT more thing such as drive shafts, control arms and steering components. To give you an idea of things, I run about 3.5" of lift on my JK and run 40" tires. Granted, I have trimmed my fenders to make this possible but that you should give you some ideas on things. As far as lifts go, I've run TeraFlex in the past and can tell you that their 3" coils will yield over 4" of lift. Also, their coils are about the harshest I've ridden on but then, ride quality is 100% subjective and if you're into that, maybe you'll like them. As far as their Falcon shocks go, I've seen too many break at the bar pins and leak to ever want them. Mopar makes a good kit but again, that's a LOT of lift for just 35's.
At the end, when you closed the door, it looked like the bottom of the door was twisted closer to the body / made contact before the door was latched? Is that something you noticed? Thanks!
EVO now sells this tire carrier with shims that you install on the lower hinge to prevent this.
Any available discounts on hitch stinger?
Can you give some feedback on the carrier? Heard a lot about chipping paint, rusting & not possible to place the camera housing/protector over the camera.
EVO has a new powder coater and the problems they've had have been fixed. Of course, if you're still concerned, you can always order it in bare steel and then have it powder coated locally. I did this with their rocker guards and it came up to being a bit less in the long run. As far as the camera goes, I just cut out the factory housing and made it work.
Wow, that seemed like alot of work just to support a heavier tire....
Plus all that xtra steel must of added enough weight to equal a entire 2nd 37" spare tire ??🙄
Any kits out there in billet aluminum ??
LOL - not even close but you can believe that if you want. Billet aluminum would cost a pretty penny.
Noob question here: do you not need any form of thread lock on any of the mods that get bolted on? I ask cause I never see it used and was curious if any of it ever backs out and needs re-tightening. Thnx for the video and any response.
Give this video a look and you'll see it used a lot th-cam.com/video/IzIaxvDLIiU/w-d-xo.html
Thread lock is only needed on components that warrant it. Things like this tire carrier do not.
Hey Eddie. Great video! Did you have a chance to measure the SWR for your CB antenna after remounting it and retune it, if needed? On my JKUR I put a similar (non-EVO) tire carrier on and with their add-on CB mount the SWR was off the charts. I'm guessing it was due to poor grounding. I wound up using a hood-mounted antenna instead, which provides much better antenna performance than anything back there anyway.
In this video, you'll see how I grounded my tailgate. That is what you need to do to make this work. I get an SWR of about 1.4 with it th-cam.com/video/8J-CEYysATY/w-d-xo.html
@@wayalifeHi. You have lots of knowledge. You also knew about the standing wave ratio and even had a meter to check it.
Do you find that you use your soft top more then your hardtop? Thank you for great videos sir !
You know, on our JK's and TJ before, we pretty much only ran our soft top. On our new JL, we seem to use our hard top a lot more.
Great video but, it seems to me too much weight on the body itself.
Is a bumper tire carrier a more robust and appropriate for carrying the big 37 or 40 tires?
Congrats for the video
It may seem like it to you but so far, it hasn't been a problem for us. Since this installation, we've racked up about 7,000 miles on our JL and put it to the test on trips like this th-cam.com/play/PLgwBN5w3KUZwjJl5aHZnMQ8RZSCoye6fN.html and without any problems. A bumper tire carrier typically weighs about 170-200 lbs. and that's NOT the kind of extra dead weight we want on the back end of our Jeep. Of course, this is just how we like to run our Jeeps.
@@wayalife Evo states it's rated up to a 37, but you said you might run a 40 on it?
Could you make a video of your solution to the camera being exposed like that?
I don't know if I could make a video of it being that it took so much experimenting to make it work but if the opportunity arises, I will.
How is this holding up Wayalife? I am interested in one, but have read a few reviews of issues with the powdercoating, and EVO doesn't warranty the powdercoating. I'm in Michigan, so it'll be important that it withstands the test of time.
Ours is holding up well but we live in Nevada where things like rust just isn't an issue. Being that you're in the rust belt, I might recommend that you order one in bare steel and then have it e-coated and powder coated locally. I've done this with their rocker guards and have been very happy with my local shop.
@@wayalife thanks a million for the advice and quick reply! Keep up the great work, your videos are some of my favorite Jeep videos online.
Had a curious question on the available transmissions in jeeps can you do video on Manuel or auto an if choose automatic would a shift kit be a good upgrade really curious on your thoughts an experience if you haven’t done one already still looking at all the cool videos
I just bought a 2021 Rubicon with manual and it came with 33" tires. I have only had it for a few days but it doesn't feel like 35's would be a good match for the stock 410 ratio gears. I was going to go 35's right away but now am leary to do so. Anybody on 35's with a manual trans and stock gearing?
Curious: I noticed your sockets are colored by some method. Looks like anodized which i don,t think is possible. I also notice on your wrench a small strip of red tape. It appears that you have a method of color coding your tools. Could you explain your trick and how you get the color on your sockets? Thanks!
Actually, the sockets came colored like that. As far as the red you see on my wrenches, I just spray painted them with red. Before I had a dedicated set of trail tools, I used to do this so that I wouldn't lose anything in the middle of a trail fix where tools from everyone is all over the place.
@@wayalife thanks for responding... I enjoy watching and learning.... Now you got me to thinking....
Great video thank you!
Glad we could be of help with this.
Didn't put the protective casing back around the camera?
It's just plastic and not really that protective. But, I do like the looks of it and make it work. Took some cutting but it looks good now.
Does this carrier eliminate the need for the bump-stops? I noticed you took them off, but didn’t see it get put back on the tailgate. Wondered... 😎
Yes it does :)
Wayalife thank you good sir! 😎
Why couldn’t those barrel bushing have been installed prior to shipping? I see a lot of products like that.
Good question. Probably a time = money thing.
Yeah, probably right. Great video!
@22:31 it looks like your tailgate dipped a bit when you opened it. Is there enough wiggle room to preload for this? Also, what did you do with your third brake light? And i have to say another great video keep up the great work Eddie!!
As you'll see in the comments below, several people have pointed this out and yes, you are seeing a dip. EVO provides shims with their tire carrier now that eliminates this but to your point, I was able to preload my tailgate and address this issue with that alone.
@@wayalife Thank you as always for replying. Sorry, I did not read much in the comments. Any plans for the third brake light or was it just not included in the video? I see in the thumbnail that there seems to be a light there just not in the video.
The EVO tire carrier comes with a 3rd brake light bracket but I wasn't exactly thrilled with the design of it. In fact, I kinda think it's stupid especially being that it would make removing your spare very difficult. I decided to install a Mopar 3rd brake light relocation bracket instead. amzn.to/2t9Wng4
How’s it holding up for you are the rubber stops good and is it noticeable or bothering to you how the spacers don’t cover up the unpainted tailgate area of the factory hinges
It Can be remedied with a quick Mopar touch up paint but would it be a corrosion issue if left unpainted?
So far so good and holding up well. The skin of the tailgate is made out of aluminum. I haven't seen any corrosion issues with it.
Not in love with the fact a little bit of primer grey showing next to the hinges :(
Was it me or did I see that door drop a little when you opened it up at the end?
It's possible. I did go back after the install and add some preload to the tailgate. I know that EVO provides shims to help compensate for this as well.
I have a 2015 JKUR and I have a set of 35s on KMC XD229 beadlocks. Do you think that my stock tire carrier setup can handle the weight or should I upgrade to something? Thank you!!
So long as you make sure to extend the isoloators so that they press firmly against the sidewall of the spare, you should be okay
The evo is still mounted to the body. Wouldn't you rather have it mounted to the bumper that is attached to the frame?
Nope. Tried that on our TJ and our JK with multiple different bumper tire carriers. If all you do is rock crawl, it's a good solution but if you like to drive hard and fast across the desert, they tend to allow for too much movement and this causes the spare to bang into the tailgate. In addition to being noisy, we've seen more than a few break over time. Of course, this is to say nothing about how heavy they are - most weigh in close to 200 lbs and that's way too much weight for us especially just to carry a spare. Now, is this EVO tire carrier the best solution? Not for us but it's the best one available at this time. We'd rather run what we have on Moby as that has proven to do the best job for us.
@@wayalife I have the same jeep that you have, even the same color except I have the 2.0 engine. I put addictive designs rear tire carrier and bumper on it and they both weigh together 110 lbs. But like you said I get slight wobble effect only noticable sometimes and it does rattle just a bit on rocky roads. I will make a video and send you a link soon. But I dont like any noise and will get used to it.
Fit Pro with this tire carrier, I don’t have any wobble or noise.
Nice Job! Hey what soft top is that on your Jeep and do they make it for the 2 door? Thanks!!
Actually, you're looking at the factory JL soft top and yes, they do make them for the 2-door just like this.
Are you on 37's with stock rubicon gearing. I have a manual 2021 rubicon and can't go over 35's with completely screwing up my drivability.
I have run 37's with factory 4.10 gears and thought it was ok with the 8-speed automatic. I am not running them with 5.13's and it's MUCH better. With a manual, I personally would consider regearing.
I’ve been reading that the paint starts flaking off/rusting or starts creaking...how has yours been holding up?
Ours has been holding up well but if you're concerned, just order it bare steel and have it powder coated at your local shop. I did that with our rocker guards and love how they came out. As far as the creaking goes, apply some chain lube to the bushings and it should stay quite for a very long time.
Is there any negative of leaving that bare metal exposed behind the carrier? Seems like it would corrode
The tailgate is made out of cast magnesium and wrapped in an aluminum skin. At least out where I live, I'm not too concerned about aluminum corroding.
Hey awesome videos man ......what do you do for a living ? just loving your lifestyle ......
Glad you enjoyed the video. As far as what we do goes... well, kinda what you see here. Although, it doesn't do a whole lot to pay the bills :)
man it sure looks like a good life mate ......your vids are way awesome btw .....
@@davetaf1323 Thank you. We're so happy to hear you like our videos :)
Woot! Real parts
So are you unable to re-use the factory camera shroud to help protect it, or did you just opt to not reinstall it?
With this tire carrier, there is no provision for the shroud. However, I cut up the shroud and made it work anyway.
What is your opinion on your Evo tire carrier does it make any noise? I had a Smitty built HD tire carrier that seemed very sturdy running a 37x13.50 tire but and every time I hit a bump it made a noise. Seemed to have a lot of slop in the hinges
I've been very happy with mine and it doesn't make any noise.
Didn’t Mel have 40s on spicy chicken with this tire carrier made for a JK? Do you have any idea how it has held up?
He didn't keep Spicy Chicken for very long so I couldn't say for sure how well it held up long term. I do intend to test it out some day though.
What did you do about the gap around where the hinges are fed through the rear of the jeep? Seems like water will easily get inside and I dont think it can drain out.
Not sure what you mean. The quarter panels are open to the ground on the bottom.
@@wayalife I tested and the water will drain out. I was just concerned with long term rust from some water. Thanks for the reply and your great videos
