    Literally days before Cindy and I needed to head out to SEMA 2018, we desperately scrambled to make a series of last minute upgrades to our JL Wrangler and specifically, because we were planning to attend the 1st Annual JLX, immediately after the show. Of course, based on past experience, we knew that we'd be needing a bit more lift if only to improve our break over angles and we decided to make that possible with a set of Rancho 3.5" coils and all new RS9000XL long travel shocks. In this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you'll get to see what it took for us to install everything but without going too much into detail as we have in the past. As a reference, I have included a host of links that highlight our previous installations and if needed, they should be able to help you along. We hope you enjoy the video and find the information in it to be useful.

    I was whispering (he's going to need a spring compressor) each time you tried to fit the springs, then you pulled one out of the back of Jane. Great video!

      LOL!! I could have gotten around the need for them had I unbolted the control arms. The jam nuts on the lower arms were binding on the mounts. But, the compressors made things go a lot faster.

    I love how the upper bolts on the jl shocks are more user friendly . especially the fronts. be careful with spring compressors. a guy in one of my fca courses got a spring in the face when one of the clamps slide. 100 stiches inside and out side of his mouth.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, I'm not too fond of spring compressors and really, prefer not to use them. In fact, this is the first time I've used a set in over 20 years. It was just faster and easier than pulling the control arms which were binding at the jam nuts.

    would I be correct if I said that a suspension lift creates more ground clearance between the bottom of the ladder frame chassis of an SUV & the ground surface??? In turn aiding in increased break over angle!!! Meaning a suspension lift also raises the chassis frame as well since the suspension (hangs below the chassis frame) is attached at or marginally below the chassis level!!!

      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While we're typically not into tall lifts, the JL has a 2" longer wheel base and I swear, we could feel it on the rocks. What the extra lift does is help to restore our break over angles and while there is a center of gravity penalty, I think it was worth it. Ride quality is surprisingly nice too especially being that this is more of a budget lift than anything.

      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LOL!! I've always liked RS9000's being that they're adjustable and that you can set them to where you want. If there is a downside, it's that what's nice for off road isn't always stellar for pavement and having to adjust them all the time can be a pain. Curious Why do you use extension brackets for the brake lines rather then getting longer brake lines? Steve

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ummm, they're a fraction of the cost and something I already had and worked just as well for this application? Nothing wrong with installing longer brake lines and I have on all my other JK's but only when needed. Also, to properly bleed the lines on a JL, you need to have a scan tool use the ABS system to do it. That's typically something only your dealership can do and that makes it even more expensive to do. Sure, you can get by without it but your brakes will never be quite the same.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this particular lift giving you as much lift as it does, I would say that it's necessary to install front and rear shafts. The front being that the CV boot on the factory shaft will be in a constant state of bind and will fail sooner than later and on the rear, an aftermarket shaft will be narrower in diameter and will help prevent rubbing on the gas tank skid at a full flex.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Fox shocks came with the Dynatrac lift we were testing out before. They were specifically made for the coils in that kit. This lift is significantly taller - more than twice as tall and the shocks we're now running were made for them. Hence, why they're called long travel shocks.

    I know ride is subjective but how would you compare all the different systems you have ran so far?

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So, what I can tell you is that the coils Rancho uses are progressive and so the ride they provide for daily driving is quite nice or at least, for our taste. Of course, most of ride quality will come from your coils. The Rancho RS9000XL are adjustable and so you can set them to whatever it is you like. With that said, both this and their Sport lift are probably one of the best riding kits we've tested for daily driving. Off road, they both do great as well but a progressive rate coil will resist stuff at full articulation in a way a linear coil will not. Also, a monotube shock will not experience shock fade the way a hydo shock will. For the cost, I find both of these kits to be a good value.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Have to?" No. But if you don't, your Jeep will feel under powered and you will effectively lose 7th and 8th gear. With 37's, I would recommend 5.13 to bring your Jeep to about stock performance with a bit more power. With 40's, I would recommend a new set of 1-ton axles with 5.38's or at least, if you plan on wheeling your Jeep.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fox are great shocks that look good and have brand that's been promoted well. In terms of design, they are a modern monotube shock and perform well. If that's all that matters to you, yeah, they're better. Now, if you're asking in terms of flex, well, these new RS9000XL shocks provide more travel and so in that way, they're better. In terms of ride quality, well, these RS9000XL are adjustable and can be set to however soft or firm as you want. The Fox are gas charged and offer only one setting and depending on what coils you have them paired up with, that can give you a nice or harsh ride. In terms of price, the RS9000XL are way more affordable. For daily driving, I would argue that the RS9000XL will give most people what they want except for a sexy name and look. Even on the rocks, they'll do well if not better due to their long travel. Where Fox will out shine them is if they're paired with a good set of coils as there will be no need for adjustments. Also, driving over long stretches of rough terrain, they won't experience shock fade the way old school hydro shocks (RS9000XL) will and this is because they are monotubes that dissipate heat better and have a separate chamber filled with gas to help prevent cavitation. So, it's all relative.
