Jeep JL Wrangler Rock Sliders - EVO Bomber Rocker Guards with Body Armor Skins Installation

  • While there was once a time when Cindy and I were a big fan of body mounted rock sliders or rocker guards, that was a very long time ago and well before there was a JK Wrangler or now, a JL Wrangler. In fact, the last time we ran a set was back when we still had our old TJ Wrangler and mainly because it was in fact, a superior way to go. The sheet metal on the TJ body was thick and strong and installing protection on the body as opposed to the frame would help provide the most ground clearance you could get along the sides of your Jeep. Now, what changed all that was Jeep's need to make a lighter weight Wrangler and when the JK was introduced in 2007, they helped make that possible by making its body panels with much thinner steel. Over the years, what we've seen is that body mounted rock sliders actually caused damage to the body after taking on a hard hit and in some cases, to the point where opening doors became difficult if not impossible. Of course, the JL Wrangler has body panels that are just as thin if not thinner and clearly, that hasn't help anything. But, for all the benefits you can get from body mounted rocker guards, we found ourselves tempted to give it another go and did so with a set of EVO Bomber Rocker Guards.
    In addition to looking really sharp, what we liked about the EVO Bomber Rocker Guards was the fact that you can get them with optional armored skins that allow you to tie the two together. By doing this, the load from a hard hit can be distributed across the entire rocker guard and body. And, if ever in the future we decided that they just weren't for us, they can easily be replaced with frame mounted rocker guards and new skins that bolt up right up to the body and in the exact same way. With all that said, this episode of the JL JOURNAL will show you what it takes to get set of EVO Bomber Rocker Guards installed on a Jeep JL Wrangler and we hope you find it to be useful.

    Really appreciate your detailed videos. They greatly help set the stage for what all is involved with an installation. I recently installed an ARB compressor on the firewall of my 2018 JLU using your video as a guide. I also really like the appearance of these EVO rockers and am seriously considering putting them on my Jeep. They are not cheap, but the quality looks solid. My question for you is can you offer a range for what one might pay to have the EVO rockers powder coated? LOL - it's a ton of work especially if you install the skins. Drilling and installing nutserts is always tough too.

  • @james2004TxVet
    @james2004TxVet 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! I am going to get me a outsert tool for myself. Question though. When I installed my rear fender flares I did outserts. First time and a learning experience. I actually beveled out a hole a bit and I put in the nutsert. Problem is the outsert is slightly loose and spins from time to time when I installed my inner fender liners. What would be your suggestion to fix this? Can I remove the outsert in anyway? Or if I use the outsert tool and attach it would it maybe crush it more and make it snug? I am thinking maybe I didn't make it tight enough and even though the hole is slightly larger it then wouldn't move. What are your thoughts?
    Also, I really like those rocker guards and been debating on getting some for my JL. I am also looking at the EVO tire carrier since watching your video a while back as well.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the look of those rock sliders. I have Poison Spyder on my TJ and like that they work as a step also. Those EVOs look like they could work as a step but a bit narrow. Do they work for you as a step platform?
    May get a set for the JL.

    Nice installation Eddie,
    Thanks for sorting out the little details for your followers. Looks great.
    Question for you unrelated. Have you found the JL to drag bottom more than previous generations? I have found JKs with similar builds get over obstacles easier due to bottom clearance. I'm at the point of going to D60s and 40s to remedy the tougher obstacle clearance issues. I just did ram assist to help the no steer problem. Slowly sorting out irritating issues. Thanks for what you do!
    OlllllllO

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The JL is physically 2" longer between the wheels. You definitely feel the longer wheel base especially compared to the JK.

    Hey Eddie, love your vids I’m a first time jeeper for last 5 months now. (Absolutely love it)
    You seem like the best man to ask for anything Jeep related. (Wish I had you as a neighbour lol) it’s off topic but I saw you had posted something in regards to that damn clicking when opening the drivers door.
    I’ve noticed on the video here you seem to have the same issue. Did you ever find out what’s causing it if so did you find a fix? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated (sorry for the off topic comment)
    Love your vids though, watched most but definitely seen every jl journal one!
    Thanks again in advance for any help/info

    • @JCx13
      @JCx13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wayalife Yea hopefully they come out with an actual cause or fix. Some have stated it goes away with applying some grease....others say they replaced the door checks(but surely that would only happen again to that one if the door check is the problem) and others have had the whole door replaced claiming something about glue coming apart on The aluminum seam on the inside 🤷🏻‍♂️(definitely not replacing the doors over a slightly annoying click sound) that’s a little extreme lol
      Anyway thanks so much for your response Eddie! I appreciate it! If you ever come across an actual cause or solution hopefully you can share it!
      Love the content, and your jeeps, your awesome!
      Edit: going to do my first oil change on her soon thanks you your video! Cheers!

    Awesome video as always my friend it looks good but I have one concern with these the open slots on the bottom would be catching alot of mud and grime looks like a pain to be able to clean them out not so much a problem in ur part of country but where mud is around alot could cause problems later.

  • @deanmcdonald5404

    Eddie, I watched your video of installing the LOD Signature sliders, and then saw this one with the EVO sliders. Can you recommend one over the other for protection. I slammed my factory ones pretty hard on the Rubicon, and need something stronger.

    • @wayalife
      @wayalife  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both will get the job done much better than factory. These have a cleaner look but they are mounted to the body. So far, I have found them to hold up great in spite of the fact. The LoD is frame mounted and can take the abuse great because of it.

    • @deanmcdonald5404
      @deanmcdonald5404 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply. Looking hard at the LODs, mainly because of the square main structure and frame mount.
