  • My experience helping angelfish parents raise their babies. Follows first generation of parent raised fish that just spawned and chronicles the first 3 weeks of the angelfish fry. Includes tips, tricks, suggested foods and crazy antics of the parent fish as they learn what to do and what not to do.

    Things I'm Doing Differently This Time:
    Water change every other day between 25% to 50% instead of just twice a week
    Variety of small foods throughout the day - dry, live and frozen foods
    Just a note: The parents need a little light overnight so they can see the eggs/fry in order to "protect" them. A couple of night lights or a lamp with a low wattage bulb should be fine.
    🐠 ✨ I expect to sell fish online May through October, depending on weather and my stock.

    this has been the best education on parent raising their fry, even seeing the 3 week olds and their different sizes -ts helping me so much as first time angelfish parent. Your talking about the behavior of the parents is also really helpful. I watch how mine interact and surprised the Dad has more patience with the fry, and the Momma wants to start the mating dance/lip-locking moments. Thanks for your shows very much,

    So adorable! Angel fish are new to me. But I've kept lots of other fish. And other pets.
    I'd like to suggest (not an expert ) that the reason they're moving their babies so much is that they know they're being watched!
    My Bettas will go into hiding when I get my camera phone out!
    When one of our cats had kittens. My toddlers kept checking on them. So the momma kept moving her nest!.

    Hi Tiffany, great video capture. I may have missed it if mentioned, but is there a reason you removed parents and fry for a tank cleaning, rather than just doing water changes as needed until you got to the point of separating the fry from the parents? Thanks.

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe it was necessary to remove the parents to really clean the tank and remove wastes. The parents would attack my hand so It was very difficult to do much of a water change without taking them out. A bite from an adult angel doesn't really hurt but it can be pretty forceful and repetitive when they are protecting their babies (in my experience). Sometimes the babies got sucked up in the gravel vac so I may have taken them out too. thanks for watching!

      The angel babies probably need small amounts of food as soon as they start swimming. You may be able to see when they still have a yolk sac. Once they start swimming, that sac that feeds them is typically gone or nearly gone. As they grow, they will need larger feedings.

      I don't leave the main tank light on overnight. That is too bright. I've used a blue night setting on one of my tank lights overnight. It works well too give the angelfish parents light to see the fry/babies but it causes algae to grow. I use some night lights plugged into the wall and a low wattage (30 watt) Edison bulb lamp in the room also.

      Hi, I'm glad to try to help. My advice depends on what the problem is. Do the parents eat the eggs or fry? Sometimes they need to spawn several times before they start to learn not to eat the eggs. Some angelfish pairs may not be able to parent raise the fry.

  • @motherone24
    @motherone24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi. thanks for this video. I want my angels to I have a pair that have spawned twice in a community tank and now babies have not survived. I am looking for live plants for the babies to hid in like the moss you have growing on the wood. I can duplicate that with guppy grass but what kind of plants do you have that are floating in your tanks? are all plants in your tank live plants? This is a 10 gallon tank, yes??

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Joyce, I don't think it's likely to raise baby angelfish in a community tank. If there are fish other than the parents in the tank, they are very likely to eat the eggs or fry. The parents may eat the eggs or fry too. It takes about a week or so for the eggs to hatch and then move past the wiggler stage and be able to swim. There's no way the eggs or fry can hide from the bigger fish for at least 7-8 days after the eggs are laid. In my opinion, you need to either remove the eggs from the tank and raise them in a separate small tank or even a bucket or put the parents in a tank by themselves. The fish in the video are in a 20 gallon tall tank. That seems to be a good size for a breeding pair of angels. Good Luck!

    Do you black out/cover the tank? Do you leave lights on regular hours? I haven't had much luck moving eggs..I've had patents with fry for about 3 days hoping they would parent... then overnight they ate them.

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tom, That's a good question about lighting. I leave my aquarium lights on a timer so they come on for a few hours in the morning and again at night. I do have a few night lights so it's not completely dark overnight. At one side of my fish room/ office is literally a small night light and at the other side is an Edison bulb lamp with an amber colored light about 30 watts that is on all the time. With my first pair of angelfish that parent raised the babies, I had a tank light with a bzillion settings. I left a blue light on the lowest setting overnight. It worked but I had algae problems. I believe that the parents need to be able to see the babies in order to protect them. Even thought there is no danger (if they are in a tank alone) the parents' natural instincts seem to lead them to eat the babies if they can't protect them. Having some light overnight is important to parent raising the fry. It also took my prior pair of angels 5 times to get it right. They did get further with each spawn. Sorry I left this out. I kept making videos of their growth but didn't really list all the key points.

  • @sparkyjones560
    @sparkyjones560 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    From my limited experience, and I'm still learning, when they are wrigglers and getting towards free swimming and start detaching, the parents can move them quite a bit just trying to keep them where they can protect them but they will give it up in the next 12 hours or so.
    I got mine laying eggs, and wrigglers, to free swimming but it falls apart after that. Maybe I'm not feeding enough, maybe I need to do more waterchanges from all the feedings that need to happen.. not sure. Its not easy at all though.
    I will say this you should probably feed baby brine shrimp, like newly hatched, so you can tell if the babies are eating, their stomachs will turn orange so it's easy to tell they are eating.

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe the live BBS is the best food for the fry once their egg sac disappears but a little variety may be good too. You might experiment with different fry foods and maybe more water changes. It's important not to overfeed the babies when they are still very little. It's been my experience that they can overeat to the point that they die. They don't know any better. When they are just long little fry and not yet developing their height that makes them look like angelfish, I've had about a dozen eat too much BBS and die. I've had this happen with several different spawns and I felt terrible. Some seem to know when to stop eating and some don't. They seem to overeat the live BBS but not powder food. It's easy to overfeed the BBS or any of the powder fry foods. They need small portions several times a day. I would suggest feeding 3-4 times a day. I try to have a little moss with some algae on it. Just a little bit so the babies can nibble on it in between feedings but not enough to get tangled in. Size of tank is also important. I would have parents with the fry in a 20 or 29/30 gallon. It's difficult to have a happy medium between good water quality and a small enough tank that the babies don't have to swim far to reach the food.
      Another note, the parents need a small light like a small lamp or a strong night light on all the time to be sure they can see the babies. I believe it helps them to "protect" the babies. If they can't see the babies, some parents will panic and eat the babies because they think something else is going too.
      Good Luck! It can take many tries for the parents and the fish keeper to figure it out.

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually do water changes every 7 to 10 days unless there are eggs or fry. If there are eggs, I change it twice a week. More if the fry are swimming and eating in the same tank with the parents. The parents were in a 20 gallon tank.

    • @sparkyjones560
      @sparkyjones560 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do daily 10%, careful to not suck up babies and pick up what I can of the waste and uneaten food. You have to feed a lot for fast growth to get them out of the danger zone and make sure they are eating, so the water changes are really crucial for that and for development overall, the hormones in the water from the spawn us also significant so more water changes the better.

  • @andrealosinger3866
    @andrealosinger3866 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You may have mentioned this and I missed it, but what do you feed tge babies when ypu let the parents raise them? I heard you say some algae and almond leaves. Anything else? I have a pair that are excellent parents, but I have them in a 90 gallon tank and im afraid the babies wouldn't be able to find food. So I move the fry to a 10 gallon to raise them.

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do feed them a variety of very small foods. They will eat fry food that is a powder, live or frozen baby brine shrimp, crumbled flake (but it's probably not the best first food). I think having the parents in with the babies for a while, if possible, is good to help eat excess food. A small rams horn snail or two can help with clean up also as long as the babies are big enough to swim. I usually keep the babies in a 10 gallon when they are first swimming (if they are not with the parents). It can be tricky to have a tank large enough for the parents and the babies together. A larger tank does make if more difficult for the babies to find the food. I use a 20 high if the parents are with the babies, however, my first videos of parent raising angels used a 29 gallon. It was a bit too big. Good luck!

      Hi, I'm not sure what to tell you. If I don't want the angelfish eggs/fry to survive, I just leave them in the tank with the parents and they get eaten within a day or two. You could pull a few eggs or fry to try to raise a limited amount if you have some extra space. Angels can have a few hundred fry in a spawn so you need to be careful not to over extend yourself depending on your space and resources. It is a lot of work (water changes) to raise the babies but it is a very neat experience to watch them grow.

    My angels just spawned in my community 55 gallon a few hours ago. Tons of eggs on my filter intake pipe. Haven't seen too much aggression but they've basically monopolized the right third of the tank. 😅 What are the babies chances of surviving? I have corys, otos, 5 other juvenile angels, two farlowellas, and 8 Congo tetras. I wasn't expecting spawning behavior this soon so my other actually intended breeding tank is not set up.

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's very unlikely that the eggs will survive in a community tank. Other fish will try to eat the eggs. Eventually, even good parents will give up after a day or two (in my experience). I believe the parents may eat the eggs for the protein if they feel too overwhelmed trying to defend the eggs. If you can plan to move the angelfish pair to their own tank, the chances will be much better for fry survival and the parents will probably be more comfortable too. Angels usually spawn pretty often so there should be other opportunities to raise the fry.

    So a breeding pair should have their own tank?
    I’ve had 6 angels in an established 59g tank for quite awhile.
    2 have paired up & are keeping the other angels from their area. They are poking the leaves with their mouths. Don’t see any eggs yet. What should I do?

    • @sparkygirl37064
      @sparkygirl37064  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like the pair of angels are cleaning the leaves and preparing to lay eggs. You can leave them in the big tank. They will probably try to protect the eggs. The eggs will likely get eaten either by the other fish in the tank or by the parent fish. If you have other tanks like a 20 gallon high or a 29 gallon, you can try to move the angelfish pair. It depends on if you have an extra tank and if you want to try to keep the babies. Sometimes angelfish can lay 200-300 eggs. It is unlikely for all of them to live especially the first time they spawn. If many do manage to survive and grow, you might want to think about what you would do with the juvenile angelfish. It can take up a lot of tank space to raise them in good water quality depending on how many babies there are. I've never had that large of a spawn, but it's possible. It could also take many tries for the babies to survive, even if you remove the parents from the large tank and let them spawn in their own tank. Once the babies start swimming they will need very small fry food. They will have a yolk sac when they first hatch and it will feed them for a few days until they start swimming freely.

      @@sandravaldez995 Angelfish can get pretty aggressive when they pair up and want to breed. In my experience, they don't seem to actually bite the other fish but they consistently chase them away from a certain area of the tank. I think the constant stress is really bad over several days or weeks. Once the pair spawns and perhaps the eggs get eaten, the pair might be more calm for a short while but they will likely spawn again pretty soon and be aggressive again. You might want to consider options going forward. A) If you want angelfish babies, maybe you can set up another tank or two - one for the pair and another to grow out the babies. B) If you do not want to have baby angelfish or you just don't have the resources (space, money, time) for more tanks, you may want to rehome a couple of fish or the angelfish pair. I have a local fish store nearby that will gladly take healthy large or medium size angelfish to resell. They have given me store credit for some black angels I choose not to keep for space reasons. I've also gotten store credit for some of my juvenile angels once they reached a certain size that make them easy for the store to sell to the public. Good luck!

If you are going to pull the eggs, you can also use a tank that's large than a 29 gallon. If you plan to let the pair parent raise the fry, 20 or 29 is best in my opinion. Some parents will raise the fry but it can take many tries to get it right and some may never learn to raise the fry. You don't necessarily have to separate the parents from the babies. It depends on the parents. Some will continue to eat the eggs. It also depends on the size of the tank and the size of the spawn. When the babies first start swimming and need to be fed, it's important they don't have to travel far to find food, so a small tank like a 20 gallon can be good. As they grow, especially if there are a lot of babies, it will be very difficult to feed the babies enough and maintain good water quality in a small tank. It can be helpful to move the babies up to a bigger tank at some point as they grow (or separate them into 2 tanks so they have a larger total water volume).
