The elephant decided not to kill them. The dad had nothing to do with it, he could have just as easily been crushed along with his whole family. It just comes down to what the elephant wanted to do to them, and it decided not to crush them. There’s no heroism or respect or anything impacting this from the human perspective aside from the dad’s decision to put them them at the elephant’s mercy. Elephants are very smart, the Dad was right and stayed calm, what a magnificent fellow that elephant was, he had every reason to be fearful and aggressive and wasn't.
Really, He's old. It took a lot for him to walk down into that gully. He shifted his weight because his joints hurt from standing around. Arthritis happens with old age. He's seen so many people, he wasn't scared. He just has seen his share of poachers. He was concerned too. Poor old Elephant.

Optimus27 sure. Keep thinking that and it'll be shriveled up before you can complain your insecurities to another creature. Arrogance at its finest and no understanding of why we are just one of many species in a global ecosystem. It gives us what we need, not us providing for the world.
Optimus27 you forgot micro predators: microbes, mosquitoes, bacteria and protozoans, which are taking more of a toll with out higher population concentrations. And no you couldn’t kill every single creature because we haven’t reached all of them and there are some we haven’t detected right under our noses. Are you implying it would be alright by you if we suddenly did go on a mass murder spree? And based on our current rate of resource use, it’s not our land alone because we don’t understand how every single aspect of the physical, chemical, and biological aspects factor into our global ecosystem. Basically we’re trashing our planet at this rate without fully understanding and taking initiative of how we can be better and make it common practice. Instead, people who claim their research off of anti vaccination blogs are attempting to refute the hard work of scientists around the world - well versed in their field and whom dedicate their lives to this - as an excuse to continue their unsustainable life style choices. Should we have no admiration or respect for our world? Being smart and advanced doesn’t mean we can go out and kick elephants and claim we’re superior. The species that do best adapt to change fastest. Since a lot of humans are unwilling to change their ways and make any efforts to help the world they live in, I worry about if this species will even be considered fit by evolutionary standards and not use the brain we have that got us this far.
Ali Ajaj No. I respect these animals but we do let them survive and it's only their land because we allow it. If we are animals too, as the majority seem to believe, then why should we stay away from the wilderness? Why should we stay crammed into cities while they have all of this space? If I want to go out there I'll go out there.
Jack Lewis fine by me, but do me a favor. Have some respect for it. It has a broader indirect but sure impact on your quality of life. 2:34 - 2:46 .....Was the elephant making way for them or confused/unsure and avoiding conflict ? ..... The size of this animal is just breathtaking ... absolutely majestic
Monster is a word colloquially used to describe something that is very large in size (I.E monster truck). This bull elephant is not only HUGE even for an elephant, but in rut from the looks of it, which is when they are their most dangerous. I love elephants and totally agree that they’re gentle giants who deserve our kindness and respect, but part of that respect is acknowledging and accepting the fact that these things are HUGE compared to most living things and could/would flatten us in a second if we gave them a reason😅 Monster isn’t a derogatory term in this case, but simply a term used to describe the sheer size and strength of this, as you said, MAGNIFICENT creature. God bless 🙏🏻✝️
this elephant blessed you. i am so jealous elephants can actually feel and smell danger as opposed to fear. and they have an almost ridiculous sense of hearing. they can hear small grumbling communication from herds miles away. he hears your babies. in any encounter i have seen, and it is in the thousands, NEVER have i seen a child hurt. that includes bulls in full musk. elephants very seldom walk backwards that far. this elephant is giving that driver the message he can pass unharmed. he knows they are scared so he steps back. his trunk is down, ears relaxed. it is a magnificent beast, but i have seen many encounters and this one isnt the best, but it stands out. i suppose if i was there it would feel like an amazing one of a kind, thus the best. i did watch it again and it reacted everytime a childs voice is heard. if there were no children, he would have moved off the road and just kept going. probably would have had a little chuckle as he walked past, even stuck his trunk in. i love elephants so much, i am right now making a small 'reborn' elephant. so am studying them.
A potentially dangerous situation, but the entire family reacted pretty well. The dad turned off the engine and didn't try to turn around or pass the elephant; he decided to be cautious and it paid off. The kids were mostly calm and delighted at being that close; they were all understandably nervous but kept their voices down. That and not having the engine running seemed to keep the elephant from being angry or frightened; he acted calm, even a bit curious. Only when the car restarted and had backed up did he give a bit of a threat display. Love the dad pointing out that they were on the elephant's schedule, "elephant time", not theirs. A poetic and wise observation.
wright534 He could have charged them. The dad admitted he did the wrong thing at the end when they told him to back up. This is what he needed to do in the first place instead of cutting engine off, but not before the standoff began otherwise the elephant may have chased.
I know he can crush me, my family and my car. I'll put them all in danger for this video. what a nice thoughtful and loving family man. His size alone would make me turn around film from the rear window.
I totally agree and also took note of the father's intuition. That elephant was so beautiful. And the wet mud on its body just added to the sensual innocence of the whole situation. Sheer awesomeness
I think he reacted correctly... elephants aren’t aggressive animals unless they are mating, scared or protecting their young and they show obvious signs of all of those things as warnings to other animals and people. Also, his kids will remember this for the rest of their lives, in the long run they’ll be glad they stayed and got within feet of one of the largest animals on earth. People calling this guy stupid are ridiculous and probably scared of their own damn shadow. This was a truly awesome experience
Tyler S. ..... If you visit somewhere like this place and return home with out a similar experience then you should not have traveled there. I too thought they did fine. Most negative remarks here are stupid simply because this was a meeting the family could not know they would have and many people hope for. Hopefully the kids will remember and cherish the once in a life chance they had.
So, your there with your family... " this will be the trip of a lifetime, I don't know anything about wild elephant, but I'm sure it will be fun" OMG!!

Need to listen to tape. The elephant was displaying dominant and territorial displays, walking towards the car, in front of car from way off. He is also alone, the heard moving closer and closer. That elephant was telling you in his terms, that he is going to take care of business. Leave respectfully, to preserve his status. And no, just because he moved to the side means nothing, as he moved towards the heard, not away from them. He was telling you these are his, you are not welcome, you will leave one way or the other. Bulls do the same thing. They to, will move towards their heard, before they take care of business, human. And don't expect a charge, more of a mosey on up to and take care of business.
No your wrong ....he's just thinking how many views this video will get $$$$.......she's the rational one....he is choosing foolishness what about the kids safety??
I know the Mom was scared, but you have to remember that kids follow your lead. If you show that your scared they will be scared too. It’s only natural. I’m not saying I wouldn’t be scared, but it doesn’t help to say the elephant can crush the car, etc.
Oh okay. It's the mums fault. Maybe the husband should have listened to EVERY SINGLE FAMILY member who was freaking out and been like yep I hear you I'm getting out of here. He saw the animal way before he drove that close. He's an idiot. He was lucky.
@@biancat7761 For the love of god, hes not an idiot. He was in a incredible situation and he stayed calm. The wife panicked and got scared, thats all.... Theres nothing out of the ordinary with this siting.. Elephants approach cars regularly. The Dad actually did perfect. Panicking can actually more dangrous and wreckless then staying calm. That elephant gestured 4 times for you to move left, away from the herd, finally outright leaning to it's right/your left. When it stepped aside to your right, it put itself directly between you and the herd, doing it's best to inform you of it's reason for approaching you, not so that you could pass. If you had tried to pass, it would've thought you intended to bypass it's guard in order to approach the herd, and it would've charged immediately. Of course, you could not move left so you should've backed up way sooner. You are very lucky that this particular elephant was this patient.
My instincts says ray32245mv's interpretation is correct. Well done ! But it's likely i wouldn't have had a CLUE being right there. I think i would have had the same reaction AS EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THAT CAR ! Parks should give classes / printouts ahead of time telling what to do in such situations. May all beings be at peace, and all of life thrive. Not least of which the glorious elephants !!! THANK YOU FOR POSTING !
Were they flipping cars in Africa or after escaping captivity in a zoo, too farr from their friends and family, unable to stretch, eat fresh food, roll around in a lake, travel 50 miles per day? Cages are like putting you in a wire bathtub or suitcase, closing a lid and letting you out to perform an hour or 2 per day as they strike you. Even zoos are terrible, taking animals from their herds in the wild...recent series on Swaziland selling elephants to U.S. zoos.

Well, i guess it's not really a huge risk because there's lots of vehicles full of tourists driving by there every day. The elephants are used to it, works out well most of the time. Id want a proper course in wildlife behavior before doing it myself though :)
I live in a country with wild elephabts, they can become enraged by things you don't hear or notice. They can stomp a car as flat as a junkyard car crusher. The correct response was to back away from the elephant before he got close. Elephants can only run 15 mph. Rationalizing about what the elephant wants ot is thinking is useless. The elephant is in NO WAY concerned that you will hurt it, the position of the ears is a challange..
well thank you sir ... finally someone who knows what they are talking about ... as i watched this video ... i was struck by two things ... immediately, the huge size of this magnificent bull, and then gradually the startling fact that these people had absolutely no knowledge about elephant behaviour and therefore were completely unaware of the extreme danger they were in ... they got some amazing film, but i'm sure that many people will tell them they are lucky, lucky, lucky that the bull didn't get aggressive ... then as i started reading the comments, the same thing .. nobody seems to realize that elephants, especially bulls, can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous, and these people should have never gotten this close ... it's amazing how people who know nothing think they can guess what an animal is thinking ...
RAZOR'S EDGE- Chiang Mai Still, even if it could it doesn’t justify us harming them, or harm coming to them. We should all love and respect the elephants as equal to ourselves, regardless of how powerful both species are. We shouldn’t threaten to kill each other. Even if they become enraged, we shouldn’t kill them.
Klaus Pallesen The world record speed for an Olympic sprinter in the 100 meters is just under 10 seconds, which is an average of 33 feet per second, or 22.5 miles per hour (36 kilometers per hour). That is nearly twice as fast as the average healthy human. So actually few humans can actually run 15 mph. But I agree, I have seen video of elephants charging vehicles which seen to show a dash speed perhaps a little faster than that, but still probably only around 20 mph maybe. I’m not an expert on elephants, but 15 seems a little slow, and certainly faster than the average human.

There was time to back away at the beginning and he thought it would cool to roll the dice

So great to see people scared of this beautiful creature! That's how it should be. Fear and respect. It's their land.
Amy Bee yes yes yes
Just like most people are unaware that 70% of your oxygen comes from the ocean yet people are butthurt about changing their mass consumer and single use plastic lifestyles. Trading short term happiness for a trashed environment which will cause long term but severely damaging effects even on us.

MONSTER IS YOURE DESCRIPTION , THIS IS A MAJESTIC AND AND MAGNIFICENT IS MORE ACCURATE AND RESPECTFUL ON THIS BEAUTIFUL ELEPHANT
God bless 🙏🏻✝️
this elephant blessed you. i am so jealous
elephants can actually feel and smell danger as opposed to fear. and they have an almost ridiculous sense of hearing. they can hear small grumbling communication from herds miles away. he hears your babies.
in any encounter i have seen, and it is in the thousands, NEVER have i seen a child hurt. that includes bulls in full musk. elephants very seldom walk backwards that far. this elephant is giving that driver the message he can pass unharmed. he knows they are scared so he steps back.
his trunk is down, ears relaxed. it is a magnificent beast, but i have seen many encounters and this one isnt the best, but it stands out. i suppose if i was there it would feel like an amazing one of a kind, thus the best.
i did watch it again and it reacted everytime a childs voice is heard. if there were no children, he would have moved off the road and just kept going. probably would have had a little chuckle as he walked past, even stuck his trunk in.

He could have charged them. The dad admitted he did the wrong thing at the end when they told him to back up. This is what he needed to do in the first place instead of cutting engine off, but not before the standoff began otherwise the elephant may have chased.

If you had tried to pass, it would've thought you intended to bypass it's guard in order to approach the herd, and it would've charged immediately. You have obviously never seen a male bull elephant in Musth. They go crazy and have been known to attack villages full of people killing them.
So nice of him to risk the life of his scared little kids.
Well, i guess it's not really a huge risk because there's lots of vehicles full of tourists driving by there every day. The elephants are used to it, works out well most of the time.
Id want a proper course in wildlife behavior before doing it myself though :)
What were his choices?!!
The elephant is in NO WAY concerned that you will hurt it, the position of the ears is a challange..
well thank you sir ... finally someone who knows what they are talking about ...
as i watched this video ... i was struck by two things ... immediately, the huge size of this magnificent bull, and then
gradually the startling fact that these people had absolutely no knowledge about elephant behaviour and therefore were
completely unaware of the extreme danger they were in ... they got some amazing film, but i'm sure that many people will tell them they are lucky, lucky, lucky that the bull didn't get aggressive ... then as i started reading the comments, the same thing .. nobody seems to realize that elephants, especially bulls, can be extremely unpredictable and dangerous, and these people should have never gotten this close ... it's amazing how people who know nothing think they can guess what an animal is thinking ...
15 mph ? Sorry they can run much faster, more than a human. 15 mph is below top speed of humans...you’re saying we can outrun them ?

So a gentle giant he is. What I would have done is listen to what the gentle giant was saying through his movements and left him alone by using the options he was giving. Don't be a pig head and put your family in harm's way, move on idiots.
How stupid r u ppl time to panic when the animals come in a pride
You should've left your engine on. When you switch it back on is when you're gonna surprise the animal, if you'd left it on it was a constant sound so less likely to cause alarm.
I disagree
This elephant is trying to avoid these humans. See em smelling the grass and hesitating to go forward on the path?? He wants no trouble. It's a shame that he had to walk off the dirt road bcuza these ppl
I'm glad the ppl backed up n let him be. Elephants walk these paths to good food or water holes, these paths are ancient. Hundreds of generations bfor him carved out these paths. Let him walk the ancient trails paths his forefathers created ❤
Lol are u serious. Stop being so sensitive
@@whitetiger5181 ohhhh l I'm ABSOLUTELY serious!!! U evidently don't know anything about this species. Elephants feel every emotion humans feel n for the same reason. Imagine urself walkn down the sidewalk ......n outta NOWHERE.....a pack of wolves or some deadly creature confronts ya!! See what im saying?? It's real close to what u wood feel if in the same situation.....they feel the exact same feelings we feel n for the exact same reason !!! They're sensitive...just like we r. Think about being in this situation---same thing!!
Yea I'm serious. U would be too if in the same circumstance 😉
He's doing everything he knows how to do to avoid these ppl...he's actually scared (which we know--it is the majority of the reason why any elephant lashes out...n let's not forget what happens to n elephant when it lashes out, rite?!!) but this could turn aggressive qwik! It's a serious...well ok could turn into a serious situation.
See that movement he's doing?? Around the 8.30 timestamp?? He's putting his trunk over his tusk??lol ppl don't get it but....that movement is an action taken a split second bfor they charge lmao most of us don't "speak elephant " n dunno these things (he seems my comment about u not knowing these creatures 'evidently udk the species or w.e i txtd u--most ppl don't no that...he's about to pop off- that trunk over the tusk is the writing in the wall. Yea...this could qwikly go from 0to100! Lol n it's crazy too bcuz this family (just like me too!!lol) WANTS TO see this magnificent animal as up close as possible...i guess that just human response or desire but...they're actually in a dangerous position n dunno they r but mostly...they're blocking this guy from his birth given rite to roam this planet n walk these ancient paths his anscestors carved for centuries. N it's only more important than them in my opinion bcuz they're in his backyard!
@@dionnedunsmore9996 Touch some grass
Sounds like these guys didn't do their research before going on a safari, you should have a guide so you know what you're doing if this happens.
Maybe if his stupid wife wasn't scaring the kids and being overly dramatic, the unique experience could've been more appreciated. Do some researches on "how to react in case of Elephant encounter" BEFORE going on a safari. Thanks God the husband was wiser and knowledgeable. Dumb wife is more worried for her car, she is building panic and their children's anxiety instead of remaining calm.
Staggeringly beautiful elephant - thank you for sharing
This Beautiful Bull Elephant was obviously the leader of the herd. The other fellas are just chilling and eating grass. He was protecting his big family. The worst thing to do is try to go by him, which would by his nature, think of this as a challenge. Backing up was the best thing you could have done to save your butt. Look at his reaction when you started to back up. Challenge over.....
Bulls don't lead elephants, the matriarch does. Adult bulls only show up to breed.
@@snappingbear Sounds like me
God made a very special Elephant. He’s massive King of his species.
I love all the fucking online biologist in the comments. The guy in the video did just fine. He didnt become all eratic and try to haul ass out of there. "the elephant gestured to move by". No, the elephant was just being an elephant, moving to stay between the herd and the car. Guides will actually tell you, if a elephant starts becoming to curious and intrested in you, to NOT haul ass outta there. It promotes unwanted behavior between elephants and vehicles. One of bull elephants favorite past times is to chase things to feel dominant. Just a few scared people in a car. Yet everyone in the comments is talking shit, and calling them names. Grow up.
Agreed, all these people insulting the man is really annoying. At least he stayed calm. People can talk as if they know everything about it, but if they were in the situations themselves, I bet quite a few would do the same or something dumber.
@@fartedididnot3685 Amen to that.
Even Rangers ask everyone to stay silent....but they keep yapping...the Elephant can hear and is curious..probably the children's voices
the Elephant was thinking " go on call me dumbo punk make my day "
terry tuna make my day !! 😭😭
😭😭😭
that’s crazy but i don’t remember asking
People will say it’s the biggest elephant I’ve ever seen in other videos but this is probably the most massive I’ve ever seen in any videos I’ve watched
you just said the same thing twice and it’s hurts my brain
This videos is 100% more enjoyable with the volume down
I'm just happy elephants are herbivores.
Just because they won't eat you, it doesn't mean they won't kill you. Bull elephants are known for being violently moody.
They could roll and crush that car in seconds.
Dont go to places like this with kids who cant handle it please, its annoying. This is his territory.
That is a beast of an elephant though, what a cool animal.
it was a tense situation out there.
the man and his wife handeled pretty well.
kids as well as wife were kinda freaked out in starting but husband cooled them off.
this family was lucky as bull elephant didnt attacked them when they start engine.
we can easily criticize the family watching this video but the man and his family faces the real fear.
try to respect and save the wildlife.
"He is letting us pass"
Proceeds to stay there and wait for the elephant to kill him.
Lol 😂😂😂😂
He provided you a list of all possible warning signs
Tail wagging.bent leg pause, ear spread, curiosity to sniff new smell etc etc I mean plenty
He's been so kind to u
The woman does everything that's dumb. Panics and scares the kids, and then talks about the car being crushed. Ffs.
That elephant was like:
YOU
SHALL
NOT
PASS!
I am a servant of the secret elephant, welder of the flame of the trunk. Dark cars will never ale you flame of HUMAN !!!!
Stomps his feets!!!!
Go back to your house!!
Car backs off.
YOU SHALL NOT PASSSSS!!
Nope, to say this a white beard is required!
I would say it was more like, "will you pass already. What are you waiting for?"
mans says to a 6 ton , " we are not gonna hurt you " laughs , Best line on TH-cam
Then pulls out an BMG sniper rifle...
@@ENZOxDV9 And misses the shot. ;o
Great attitude shown towards this majestic creature
The guy did the right thing - elephant was not aggressive.
Derek Fisher the elephant was just checking them out. If they made alot of noise it would of provoked it. So he did the right thing
I would never take my family on a safari, and I will do my best to keep them out of traffic. NONETHELESS, the man's house was in order, and if only more American households could be so.
Derek Fisher, you get no argument from me. I WOULD NEVER TAKE MY FAMILY ON A SAFARI RIDE, AND I DO MY BEST TO KEEP THEM OUT OF TRAFFIC, ENTIRELY
Derek Fisher you are so right. If that bull was in musth, they might not be here today. It's sickening to hear his wife and children begging to get out if there. That is NOT what all others strive to do, keep your wife and children in harms way because you learned so much about elephant behavior from which college?
How you would know the elephant was not aggressive, they are wild animals they are unpredictable. He was idiot father risking his family life, when the elephant was still far away by the tree, immediately the father should of made a u turn and drove away until the road is clear!!
There is a special place in hell for people who shoot these animals for sport.... Truly awesome beast.
Human: "We are not going to hurt you okay".
Elephant: "okay. Thank you for saying that in English. I don't understand Spanish."
That's the most powerful single animal on the planet.
