  • This Easy Granny Square Blanket for Beginners is an updated version of one of my earlier patterns. While this tutorial uses five different colors of yarn, you could use just one color yarn, a self-striping yarn, or variegated yarn. This pattern is very easy and offers a few tips to help make a perfect project even without any crochet experience.

    You can also make this with only ONE color ... it all depends on what you'd like to see in the finished item. Or, if unsure about the color scheme of the person you're gifting with the finished blanket/afghan, etc.

      How do I make this with one colour? I was going well until the first colour switch as we end in the middle but due to the colour switch we then start in the corner, I’m not sure how to get back to the corner to continue with the same colour

      See the video tutorial at 12:47 to see how to end one color (and darn in the tail ends), then see 14:24 on how to start the new color, and then you can see it again at 17:10. See 18:12 on how to turn your work and do a second round in the same color. You always finish your last round where it is done and then begin the new color in a corner.

Turning makes so much sense too, I love that I learned from your videos because there’s a zillion out there on granny squares. Honestly one thing I do differently from your video/pattern is only chain four instead of five you teach at the beginning to form a circle 🫣I just like the look of a smaller hole .🩷Thank you for your teaching crochet videos, I truly appreciate it.🥰🙏

      @@createandcrochetwithpatricia ok. Yes. I meant because I am turning and not creating a seam on the diagonal as I increase rounds. My end is not at the corner every round it will move ? Hi love to make one,do I have to use all same size wool. I have many balls of wool left over n different sizes

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so, you will want to try to make the strands the same size. So if using a finer yarn, you may have to use 2 strands. If you have a bulky yarn, that will be the gauge you will start with and then create combinations of the smaller yarns to equal that size. So maybe a medium weight with a light weight to equal the bulky, then maybe 3 lightweights to equal the bulky...that sort of thing. Also you can change your crochet hook sizes to accommodate the different sizes of yarn. A larger hook will make the stitch larger and a smaller hook will make the stitch tighter and smaller. I hope that makes sense! Have fun!

    I’m not new to crochet but I’ve never made a large granny square afghan, so this will be my first time making one. I was a bit lost on the final row when you put the edging on. Only 5 double crochets instead of 2 sets of 3 double crochets when you started the edging 21:20 ? I want to make sure so that my blanket doesn’t look wonky.

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The last round is done as a full double crochet round. It's not clusters of 3 dc's with a chain 1 in between. The corner is made with 5 dc's to get around the corner, without it being too 'full'. You may want to do 6 dc's in the corners if you have tight tension, but 5 should do it. You are then doing 1 dc in each stitch, including the chain stitches, creating the solid border.

      When crocheting in rounds, the fabric can pull in the same direction and create a bit of a wonky shape. This is especially true for individuals who haven't mastered proper crochet tension. Turning the blanket for each round balances the tension. It also creates a fun texture, and makes it so there is no wrong side or right side...so lots of benefits! 👍👌

    Can this be made in cotton thread? Acrylic means wool right?

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can use any type of yarn you desire! Wool is a natural fiber made from animal hair/fur such as sheep and alpaca, whereas acrylic yarn is a synthetic fiber and is much less expensive than natural fibers such as wool. All yarns also come in a variety of weights, and for this project I am using a number 4 medium weight yarn which is also called worsted in some countries.

      The yarn I use is a number 4 medium weight acrylic yarn, and the recommended hook size is 5mm on the package. This weight yarn is also know as "aran" or "worsted weight" yarn. Within this weight range, yarns can vary in actual size quite a bit. If you are finding the yarn too thick to work with, then you may want to find a different brand and weight. All the details for this project are in the written pattern: patriciafentie.com/2022/05/22/easy-granny-square-blanket-for-beginners/

      You always darn in your tail ends, do not cut them off with out securing them otherwise the fabric will unravel. See 15:00 in the video to see how to darn in the ends: th-cam.com/video/uFo7oX7QTDA/w-d-xo.html

      It may have something to do with your tension. If it is too tight, that could cause it to curl. I have a tutorial on proper tension and another option is to use a larger crochet hook. th-cam.com/video/PxAVTN_T3mk/w-d-xo.html

      You chain 1 in-between the sets of 3 double crochet stitches along the straight edge. You chain 2 in-between the 2 sets of 3 double crochets in the corners.

      I'm sorry, but I've never understood how to calculate a project by how much the yarn weighs. I've always used length. Every yarn will have a different weight depending on the material and the brand. For example, in the number 4 medium weight yarn class, Bernat Cotton has 77 meters per 50gms and Lion Brand Mandala has 105 meters per 50gms. The yarn I used for this project is Bernat Premium (#4) and it comes in at 83 meters per 50gms. So perhaps you can use that weight to calculate what you would need. 👍

    Can this be done with chunky size 6 yarn?

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure! It will be a much larger stitch and the blanket will be heavier, but it will work just fine. After a few rounds, you will be able to tell whether you like the chunkier yarn or not. The wonderful thing about crochet is that if you don't like it, you can just undo it! Have fun 😀

      No, and you don't even have to turn your work...you can continue making the rounds all in one direction. This method of turning the work just helps to prevent the blanket from becoming twisted which can sometimes happen if crocheting all in one direction.

    I'll crochet the round on

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do explain that in the video... it is to keep a balanced tension while crocheting in the round. Some people have tight tension which causes a large granny square to twist in the direction of crocheting.

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you find I go too fast, you can go to settings below the video (the little gear icon) and set the speed of the video to 0.75. That is a really nice speed for following along. Crochet is a gentle and peaceful craft, it's totally suited to being in a 'slow state', I even find it rather meditative. I think slow is good!!! 🙏🙌👌

  • @ElenGolightly
    @ElenGolightly ปีที่แล้ว

    Appreciate you taking the time to do the video but it does not feel like a beginner video, it's so fast. Maybe you could repeat things and go a bit slower?

    • @createandcrochetwithpatricia
      @createandcrochetwithpatricia  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can slow the speed of the video down to suit you. Just go to settings (the gear icon below the video), choose "playback speed" and choose 0.75. You can even make it slower, but that will probably suffice. Once you learn the basic granny square stitch, the repetition of the same stitch will soon become very easy. Enjoy!

      I'm sorry you feel this way, but a granny square blanket does make a great beginner's project. It repeats the same stitches over and over, so it is a great way to practice crochet. You can slow the video down by going to settings (the gear icon) and choose "playback speed", then choose 0.75 and that will slow it down more. Also, I always recommend starting with my Beginners Crochet Series where you learn all the basics of crochet including proper crochet tension, darning in tail ends, and all the basic stitches: patriciafentie.com/2019/06/17/beginner-crochet-series/
