My wife just caught me staring at our two apple trees in the front yard. She asked me "what are you doing?" Sizing up these trees to see how big my bowls will be, I said. Hello my friend, Congrats on the project and smart way of working that hides great experiences. See you. Big greetings....
Thank you very much James. After seeing Phil using it a few years ago I decided to get a few sand-o-flex's. They do a great job. Prior to getting a them I used a nylon abrasive wheel with a 1/4 inch shaft. Thanks for watching, Gary
hello friends greetings healthy and successful always. thank you for sharing knowledge and always faithfully watching your latest things you are great fun people
What a beautiful bowl. There for a minute I thought you were going to take all the bark off. I glad you left it, I love the nature in these bowls. It is truly gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing your work. ❤ 🙃
I do love the natural look the bark gives. So many people just get rid of it. It really does something special to a project. Thank you for your reply Gary. Dotty
Thank you very much Ronnie. Phil is not only a great wood turner he is also a great guy. We met a few years ago. Phil put out a video and I was in it for a minute or so. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Luie! For sure Apple is a beautiful wood and a dream to turn. At least if it does not have a lot of knots in it. I need to look because I think I might have a piece I cut off from this some time ago. Take care, Gary
Thank you Doug, I love turning Apple and this one just might be the prettiest one I have turned. Although I have an end grain bowl from it that is pretty cool. Thanks for watching.
Thank you Thomas! For sure perfection does not exist. Even when I glue a piece up and there are no voids or cracks they are not perfect. The grain it self will have areas that are not the same. And that is what makes them interesting. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary , Thank You for showing that process . That is one beautiful piece of apple . I was amazed with the quality of the bark , after 3 years . That is a winner . You would have to pry that piece out of your sweethearts hands . LOL Beautiful work my friend . Have a pleasant evening . Terry
Thank you very much Terry. For sure this is not going anywhere. Well none of them do unless I give them as gifts and even then that has to be approved before I do. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Garth! I was pretty proud as well. On something very special I will not always cut it all the way off. But things just felt right. Thanks for watching, Gary
That is the prettiest piece of Apple I have seen, Gary! Many times it is quite plain and colorless but you got a beauty and made the most of it! I lover everything about his piece including the thick walls. They make for a very substantial, comfortable piece, like something that won't break in a hurry. I appreciate that you worked hard to keep that feature along the top edge in place. And such a beautiful finish! And, whoa, that nub removal! Excellent! LOL! Just a relly nice piece and a fun video to watch. Great job, my friend! 😊 Phil
Thank you Phil. I have not seen any other this nice. I am thinking the branch that had to heal over might have helped create all that color inside. But it is a guess for sure. At first all I thought I had of interest but all that changed once I started cutting the inside. That was a the best nub removal I have had. All I could think was Phil must have taken over on this one without me looking. I had to rerun that section just to make sure it was me LOL. But it was you that should us all the trick. But wait till next week the nub removal is more like I for got to engage my brain when I jammed the gouge into it LOL. See ya later, Gary
I want to share this, I got an order today in the mail, they used the print out order form and sent check. On the bottom of t he order form it is written, "I like The PAPAS1947 channel on TH-cam. Gives me great inspiration!" So t hats what once of your fans wrote from Ohio. Great compliment and I wanted to share it.
Thank you very much Tom for sharing that. And I can guarantee he will love your product. Best product I have tried. I did not use it on this one because of the nature left in the bowl. Hard to do it right. But you just wait till you see next weeks turning! Take care, Gary
It's an absolutely lovely piece, flaws and all. They actually make the piece that little bit more beautiful and very interesting to look at! I think you may well be the only one who'd call them flaws! I call them beauty marks.
Thank you Pauline! The actual flaws were flaws in my sanding around the knots. I just could not get all the tear out cleaned up. I call the knots, inclusions and cracks beauty marks as well. Some like to fill them with resin but I like them the way there are just like you. And my wife likes them as well. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Gerald, happy you like them natural like this. I have done a couple turnings where the wood had been in a forest fire and I left the ashes in some of the inclusions. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you John, I was surprised as well. Perhaps where the branch healed it caused some changes inside. And I know the tree had something going on and that is why they cut it down. Take care my friend, Gary
Thank you Ben, this is my favorite jacket for sure. I have plenty of them but this one is what I grab all the time. Glad you liked the bowl as well LOL. Take care, Gary

Thank you. This is one of my favorite Apple bowls I have turned. That and one thin one I turned that really warped a lot. Which left it with a very interesting shape. My wife has snagged it for a snack bowl! Thanks for watching, Gary
Great job Gary! Apple is a really cool wood to turn. I agree that it is very heavy, but well worth the effort. It is a beautiful wood to work with. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Michael. I am still amazed and what is inside some of these pieces. I have one in the lathe right now that is pretty special as well and I did not expect it. That is what keeps this so interesting. Thanks for watching, Gary
That Apple wood looks great. I was told it’s not good to turn and cracks a lot but your piece looks beautiful. I like the pinkish hue of the wood. Nice job Gary.
Thank you Michael! A lot of people do not like cracks and voids but they do add a lot to the piece. When a piece is this dry I do not expect it to crack anymore than it already has. I think that is a concern with a lot of turners. That and thinking you MUST remove the pith. That is another thing I do not worry all that much about. At least on most wood that I turn. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Josh, I struggled to not leave a 4 inch diameter bowl in it just to leave more of that bulge. But this worked out just fine. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, this has nothing to do with the apple piece that this is attached to, but I just wanted to thank you for the “wet sanding” tip to fill in cracks. As it turns out I didn’t have any water based sealed but I did have some Zinzer seal coat. So far it works just like the water based. A great find, many thanks!
Thank you for letting me know Michael. And the Zinsser Seal Coat will work. And I like it for smaller areas. It does setup pretty fast but if you keep it fairly wet I think it should be fine. And based on what you told me it seemed to work very well. Thanks for letting me know . Take care, Gary
Beautiful piece. I have a piece of apple I have had for many years. I have been hesitant to turn it but I may have to give it a shot. Thanks for your encouraging videos.
Mama Mia! That is so amazingly beautiful! I love all the colors that come out when you put your magic to it! I love it! It’s so unique and the shine on it is fabulous! Great job 👏🏼 Bravo! Oh, the bark is even beautiful and I’m not a bark kinda gal!
Fantastic, from start to finish, Gary. Learned a lot and gained some direction of what to do with some pieces I have with similar features. Thanks for the video.
That’s one beautiful bowl. I’d like for you to do a shop tour. See the size, whether it’s stand alone, basement, or whatever kind of shop plus what equipment you use and the layout. Once again great job thx for sharing.
I have a lot of things to arrange before any shop tour. Just to give you and idea here is a list of the tools I have. And probably left something out. Maybe when the weather gets better I will get things in place or tossed. Mostly the metal area is packed. Wood lathe Table saw 2 band saws Drill press Jointer Thickness planner 14" disk sander Spindle sander Dust collector Miter saw on fold up stand Air compressor Tons of wood working hand tools: chisels, planes and other things Two CNC milling machines Metal lathe Horizonal metal cutting band saw
Tis certainly is a spectacular piece of Apple Wood and beautifully turned. This allows the full exploitation of the grain that you have done SO well Gary. We get to enjoy the full beauty of the grain and colour of the wood. Don from South Aust.
You were brave to cut the nub so small. I had a terrible experience going too small and having it break and the bowl hit the tool rest and exploded. Cut my finger in the process and it was ugly. I now cut it off with a pull saw and sand. Nice job with the Apple. Very pretty bowl.
I look for any cracks in the tenon as it gets smaller. I have stopped many times and sawed it off as well. Cutting it off is much safer for sure. Happy you like the bowl. Take care, Gary
Thank You Gary.....Nice one ..Apple wood with a knot (or is that an apple core). When I tune in I always expect something elaborate, mind blowing, laminated and I seem to feel like I need to take notes like back in school, ha. Some times I get lost in your process BUT I LOVE IT!!! No notes this morning and fun to sit back, wake up, have some coffee and enjoy the relaxing process of basic woodturning ( I can kind of turn my brain off ... a bit... ha). Gary your woodturning is always very enjoyable no matter what your turning and each time I always learn something new. Each piece of wood dictates the direction or misdirection you follow to have a finished piece. Applewood is beautiful...TM
Thank you tuffy! Apple wood can be very special. I will have more of those crazy glue ups coming but these are nice to do. This piece of wood has a lot of sentimental value to us. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary, you spoke of being concerned about worm holes, bug holes etc...... just to be sure about them critters give them a bit of a spa treatment in the microwave for 10 -15 minutes....... no worries bout them crawling out later.....
Thank you Peter, I heard others talking about cooking those bugs in the microwave. Seems like 10-15 minutes might be a bit long. Thanks for the tip, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Ya, maybe a bit long, but that depends on the power level as well, as you dont want to overheat the wood, if it might not be really dry, several people also use the microwave for drying their wood, such as for twice turned bowls etc.
Gary: What a beautiful bowl you have turned again. I’m going to try and find some apple wood turn. My only problem is that I have a midi lathe with the belt drive to change speeds not a digital speed. I really like watching you and Phil do your turnings and your time and effort you put into your craft. Thank You
Thanks so much Dave. Nothing wrong with a belt drive lathe. That is what I learned on and turned some massive sized patterns at work using a lathe with the old flat belt system. Yes one with a electronic speed is nice but the function of a lathe is to spin the wood and they both do that. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gary
Good result📸
Thank you David and thanks for watching,
Gary

My wife just caught me staring at our two apple trees in the front yard. She asked me "what are you doing?" Sizing up these trees to see how big my bowls will be, I said. Thank you very much. For sure I wanted to leave some of it.

Beautiful bowl. I love the knot on the edge. Phil uses his sand-o-flex every episode.
Thank you very much James. After seeing Phil using it a few years ago I decided to get a few sand-o-flex's. They do a great job. Prior to getting a them I used a nylon abrasive wheel with a 1/4 inch shaft.

Very nice piece. Nothing in this world is perfect and you embraced the flaws of this piece very well. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks Scott. When the piece is heavy and out of balance I will play it safe.

Tis certainly is a spectacular piece of Apple Wood and beautifully turned. This allows the full exploitation of the grain that you have done SO well Gary. We get to enjoy the full beauty of the grain and colour of the wood. Don from South Aust.
Thanks you very much Don. Yes it sure is a beautiful piece of wood and it amazing me of all the wonderful things we are provided with.
Take care,
Gary
A great conversation starter.
Very true! Thanks for watching.
Gary

Thank you very much Tim and thanks for watching.

Absolutely beautiful Bowl Gary ! Everything about it shouts beauty . The grain , knots , the bark ! It's just awesome !
Many thanks Jon. For sure this piece of wood has a lot to offer. It was a pleasure to turn.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
You were brave to cut the nub so small. I had a terrible experience going too small and having it break and the bowl hit the tool rest and exploded. Cut my finger in the process and it was ugly. I now cut it off with a pull saw and sand. Nice job with the Apple. Very pretty bowl.
I look for any cracks in the tenon as it gets smaller. I have stopped many times and sawed it off as well.
Cutting it off is much safer for sure.
Happy you like the bowl.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very beautiful sir I like the apple wood 🪵 ✌️💪💪
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the tip,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Ya, maybe a bit long, but that depends on the power level as well, as you dont want to overheat the wood, if it might not be really dry, several people also use the microwave for drying their wood, such as for twice turned bowls etc.
Nice work, like the wood and live edge
Thanks Vern and thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary: What a beautiful bowl you have turned again. I’m going to try and find some apple wood turn. My only problem is that I have a midi lathe with the belt drive to change speeds not a digital speed. I really like watching you and Phil do your turnings and your time and effort you put into your craft. Thank You
Thanks so much Dave.
Nothing wrong with a belt drive lathe. That is what I learned on and turned some massive sized patterns at work using a lathe with the old flat belt system.
Yes one with a electronic speed is nice but the function of a lathe is to spin the wood and they both do that.
Thanks for watching and commenting,
