Wood Turning Cherry Bowl in a Bowl Multi Axis

  • This is a fun project. Turning 2 bowls in one or a Bowl in a Bowl.
Another multi axis turning. Sort of an offset turning.
It is an illusion but I have already been asked if I glued the 2 together.
I show all the steps I did to create it. Any size is possible with only one dimension being somewhat critical for it to look good.
Careful setup and accurate cutting is required.
It is an advanced turning but it can be done. Turn to your abilities and be safe.
This has been done before. I saw an image of one done a few years ago. And I have been told there is a video done as well. I was also told it lacked explanation of how it is done.
Check out Gord Rock for great reviews and some fine wood turning as well.

The pattern maker strikes again! Nice job Gary and it's great that you like new projects - always trying something new or different. That's one of the good things about turning; there's always something 'new' to try and then there's the challenge of getting to be really good at those projects one likes the best! Without challenge turning would be boring. It's like motorcycling, there was always the challenge of 'making it a great ride'. And life? Making it a great life?

    • @ThePapa1947

Your comment about riding a motorcycle and the challenge of a doing a new ride reminded me of my old days.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you Gord I am really happy that you like it. Well I used a lot of math in my job. I was a wood pattern maker.
Which means I built wood patterns from drawings for foundry use in casting metal parts.
I used lots of geometry and trigonometry in laying them out. Building patterns is sort of like chess. It helps to see a number of steps ahead of what you are doing.
Anything from valves and pumps to large parts for earth moving equipment. When I would build a valve or a pump there would be lathe work. The largest turning I did was almost 8 foot in diameter done on a big post lathe. The most bulky turning was 6 foot in diameter and probably 2 foot deep. It was for a big mold to make fiberglass parts. Needless to say I loved my job and new when I was in high school that is what I wanted to do.
I am sure you would have no problems making one of these and would love to see it!
You are welcome for the shout-out..you earned it!
      Take care,
      Gary

Great job and a very clear explanation, too. I wonder if it would be possible to make a very tiny, narrow groove where the two segments meet, to increase the illusion of one bowl sitting in another. Guess I won't know until I try to turn one, myself.

One thing to think about is the balls are ball shaped. Both share the same center making them concentric to each other. When you rotate it in your holding fixture they should be rotating on their centers. Make sense?

Uh, I came in late and missed most of the vid so a question ... What glue did you use to stick 'em together ? I can't see any, repeat any glue lines !!! Suggestion for next time - use a glue that gives you more setup time and they won't be crooked; but I see you managed to get the grain aligned almost perfectly ... just one area where it doesn't match but, Oh well. Oh, and the bowl(s) need a proper foot my friend, as every craftsman knows! Next time OK?
